Windows 8 System Recovery freezing at command prompt

Hello and thanks for any replies in advance!
My hard drive on my HP Envy model dv6t-7200 recently failed. My computer wouldn't start and the hard drive failed the long DST test in the f2 menu. I got a new hard drive from Amazon and physical instalation was simple. It booted from the hp recovery disks just fine. It then copied the data from the disks and prepared for installation. It then restarted and switched applications to the installation. After only a few minutes, the application closes and only a command prompt in the system 32 directory is open. It stops there and doesn't finish the installation.
I tried typing in "shutdown /r", the normal command for restart, but it didn't work. I also tried a hard restart, but upon turning back on a BSOD says that the boot directory is corrupted.
Anyone have any ideas for getting installation to finish?
Thanks so much!

Hi Jhkast,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I would be happy to assist you. I have read your thread on your HP ENVY dv6t-7200 Notebook and needing to resolve the BSOD after new HDD installed. Here is a link to restore the BIOS. Please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices. The BIOS restort will help correct the issue with the new HDD.  You also might want to look at this document on Secure boot.
Hope this helps you.
Thanks.

  • Windows 7 System Recovery Error 0x800700b7

    Hello
I have a HP NoteBook G62-225DX and it is not starting up (I am getting the blank screen with the cursor on top).
I tried putting the Windows 7 CD (64-bit) and do a System Restore to an earlier point but for every restore point I am getting "Windows 7 System Recovery Error 0x800700b7" and no restore is happening.
Whata is the solution - Reinstall The OS ?
    Regards
    Abdul G

Enter BIOS by tapping away at the F10 key immediately after powering on.Use Diagnostics to test the hard drive. If all tests are ok, try Restore again..if no joy, then a full System Recovery may be needed.

  • Dv4-1275mx Replaced Hard Drive Windows Vista System Recovery Failure

I have a HP dv4 1275mx laptop and I just replaced the hard drive.  I got the Vista 64-bit hp system recovery discs from HP but the recovery has failed 4 times.  The hard drive is brand new and has more space than the old one.  It's a Western Digital 640 gb scorpio blue sata 5400 rpm.  Windows will not complete the download.
On the original hard drive, I upgraded to Windows 7.

  • Windows and system recovery won't launch

I have HP Pavilion dv7-2015TX. It is running Windows Vista when it used to work. It stopped loading windows and initially offered me the recovery mode or starting windows normally. When I  chose the recovery mode it kept asking me to find the operating software to repair which it couldn't find. Now I'm not even being offered that option. Hitting esc on startup brings me to the startup menu. I've run System Diagnostics and done a start-up test where it came up with no errors, stating startup test passed. The Error log comes up with 0305 @ Time 07132013-185631; 0601 @ time 06082013-080914; 0601 @ time 06062013-183504; and 0305 @ time 11152012-033540.
Choosing the system recovery option just makes it start to try and load windows and I end up back with a blue screen and an arrow.
If I just let the system continue its boot without hitting the esc key and going to the startup menu, then it starts to load windows but eventually also ends up on the blue screen with the white arrow.
I have made a set of recovery discs but can't get the system to load from them either. Repeatedly hitting F11 on startup doesn't stop the system from trying to load windows and then the blue screen. Hitting F9 just gets me to a black screen with a line of incomprehensible characters.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I really suspect that your hard drive is bad and will have to be replaced. Not sure though if this would also be causing the problem of booting from Recovery Disks. Can you boot from any other disk?
Get a utility cd such as PW. It will  allow you to test hard drive, format it if possible.Scroll down on the page and get> Bootable CD ISO and> ImgBurn to burn the iso image to cd-a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here. Once created, boot from it. Delete any hdd partitions, create one and format.

  • Windows 7 System recovery help

Im stuck on a scrren that just show s a green check that points to a hand taking out a disc then it shows a picture with 3 other discs
I used the system recovery disc that said used this first then when it was done loading files it showed me it

    Hello sunnysom,
I see you are having problems using the recovery discs provided by HP on your computer. I have some suggestions that may help resolve your problem.
I would suggest trying the recovery again with the discs first. Here is a link to HP steps to running a recovery using discs. Try the steps in the link and see if this helps.
If you are still unable to use the discs I suggest testing the hardware on the computer. Here is a link to test the hard drive on the computer. If that test passes you can test the memory (RAM) as well. Here is a link showing the steps to do that as well.
Let me know if this help or if you get any error messages.

  • System recovery freeze

I have a pavillion dv4 that i bought in 2009. I have continuously been having issues throughout this time. The computer was barely used for two years because i had a school issued macbook ...which was no better....... But i had to return it. now i need the pavillion to work for me. the computer was originally installed with vista but upgraded a few weeks later with a disk they sent me. I made recovery disks before i upgraded and i need to use them because the computer has hit my last nerve. I followed the directions and the first two disks went through and the third and final disk froze and i dont know what to do. It has been frozen for 10 hours on 17%. Can someone shed some light on this?

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and/or product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers that are all different. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
Please see this HP forum thread entitled "Installing from HP Recovery CD, installation freezes at %12" for more information about your issue. It is common for the recovery process to take several hours to a much as a day. Do you know for sure that it is frozen, or are there any signs of progress? Please post a photo if you can.
If you don't use the HP "value added" software installed at the factory, You can skip using the originalHP Vista Recovery discs and install Windows 7 directly on the computer.
    Please send KUDOs

  • Use of java application w/ Swing component causes Win95 system to freeze

    Hi All,
Until yesterday, we were having a major problem that whenever we ran a java applet or application that used Swing, the Windows 95 systems would freeze tight and require a reboot.
I had tried everything from loading the J2RE, Windows Sockets 2, J2SDK, none of which helped with the problem.
What we found out yesterday is the Windows 95 machines that were freezing didn't have DirectX on them, and that when DirectX 8.0a was installed, the freezing problem went away.
Just thought I'd share my success if anyone else is now struggling through the same items.

  • How to hide command prompt window when using system exec

Hello, I'm using the system exec VI to do some file transfers for a LabVIEW application.  I'm worried that the black command prompt window with white scrolling text that pops up when system exec is called might frighten the non-tech savy users of this LabVIEW application.  Is there a way to hide the command prompt window?

  • My system freezes during start-up "for first time" after running System Recovery.

    HP G62-227CL
    Win 7 (64 bit)
No error message, per se; just a frozen screen during reboot.
Months ago, my computer suddenly started glitching on me.  I shut down and tried a reboot.  The system froze on the boot screen with the flying colors.  Tried system recovery several times  but must have done something wrong because it would not run.  Resolved to buy a new hard drive and reinstall from recovery discs.  Delayed for no good reason until today, months later.
Before buying new hard drive, decided to run System Recovery again.  It worked!  I tried the option that deleted everything and restored to original factory settings and software.  Everything appeared to work like a charm: hard drive reformatted, software reinstalled, system prompted me for a reboot.  I did.  Windows started to start, "Setup preparting your computer for the first use" appears . . . and freezes.  For hours.  Hard drive indicator light is off.
BTW, made sure that the Wi-Fi button was on as I read about Recovery issues if it was off when the program ran.
Rebooted.  Hit F11.  Ran maintenance and checked hard drive for errors.  There are errors.  Unfortunately, the default setting of CHKDSK does not repair them.   Opted for a command prompt.  Rand CHKDSK again with "/f /r" option seen in other posts.  I'm too ignorant here to get the program to run properly, I guess.  I ran CHKDSK on both drive X and C.  No errors found . . . sort of.  I know they exist because the system will not boot up.  (Yes, I tried again.)  Back at command prompt, I tried to run CHKDSK on drive C again.  This time I received a message that I would first have to unmount (dismount?) the drive.  As I do not know what this means, I opted for "no" and have decided to post this message for assistance.
So.  Suggestions on what I do next?  More specifically: how do I get CHKDSK to repair the errors it found?  I believe the message was: "Errors in $130 of sector . . ."  It displays this message twice at 62% completion.  Freezes for a long time.  Gets going again only to slow to a crawl again around 70% but for not as long.  Then returns back to the start screen of System Recovery.
Ran System Recovery again for kicks.  Again, appeared to work like a charm.  Unfortunately, the laptop is once again sitting frozen on the "Preparing . . . for first use" screen again.  It is getting hotter the longer it sits.  The fan is now audibly running at higher rpms . . . if any of that helps.  I'm shutting it down and waiting for your advice.
    Thanks!

Hello Miles1966.  I understand you're experiencing some issues with your notebook freezing.
This does sound like a hard drive problem.  The freezes, missing HDD indicator light, and inability to perform a recovery are all symptoms of a failing hard drive.  You had been using CHKDISK previously but have you tried running the diagnostic which is built into the BIOS?  Try following these steps and post the result of the diagnostic.  I suggest running the memory test as well just in case.
Let me know the result of these diagnostics.  I hope you have a great day!

  • Can't reinstall Windows 7 with Operating System Recovery Disk x120e

    Hi,
I dabbled with Ubuntu on my Thinkpad x120e, but found that the dual-boot was unneccessary.  I (likely foolishly) followed directions online to use EasyBCD (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/nongeeks-guide-safely-uninstall-ubuntu-dualbooting-machine/) to overwrite GRUB.
Of course, now Windows won't load!  I get an error

I got the Operating System Recovery Disc from lenovo (thanks Lenovo for sending it) and copied it to a USB as the computer has no DVD drive.  When I start the computer from the USB and select run from USB, it begins to load Windows, then Lenovo Rescue and Recovery 4...but then it crashes and restarts.  When I hit f8 and startup in SafeMode, it begins to load the safemode screen, but then also crashes.
Any advice on what to do??  Many thanks.

    Hello,
If you are okay with erasing the contents of the hard disk drive, you can try booting to a Windows Command Prompt, running DISKPART.EXE, selecting the hard disk drive, and issuing a "clean" command, which will erase the disk so that the operating system can be reloaded.

  • Need Command Prompt, system reboots at startup

Laptop will not boot to XP pro windows.  loops at reboot.    I do not have CD's for the system.  I used another XP service pack 2 install CD but when accessing the repair console the install CD cannot find any hard drives.   I used the Recovery console for the thinkpad and ran  all diagnostic tests and everything past.   I cannot find where I can access a command prompt so I can run the CHKDSK on the system to repair the corrupted boot file.  I sooner not use the restore the system until I see if the chkdsk works since the system has service pack 3 and other updates which are not restored and this may not fix the boot problem.
