Windows 8 Tablet / Touchscreen - On Screen Keyboard shortcut missing on Desktop

Hi
On a windows 7 tablet, on the desktop, if I clicked a field (e.g. in Windows Explorer) a small keyboard icon appears with a shortcut to the on-screen-keyboard (OSK).
On windows 8, this no longer appears. Instead you have to click the field, then select the OSK from the taskbar, and then click back in the field before typing.
Technical Stuff:
So far we've found that in Windows 8 there is no 'Options' window for the Input Keyboard in the Taskbar. In Windows 7 there WAS an 'Options' window which included the setting "For tablet pen input, show the icon next to the text box". This setting controlled
the shortcut icon that appears when you click in a field, and changes the following setting in the registry: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\TabletTip\1.7\ShowIPTipTarget. This setting does not appear in the registry on a Windows 8 machine and adding it in makes no
difference.
Rant:
Within 5 minutes of issuing a new Windows 8 tablet this problem was noticed by the end user, rendering the device almost useless if you want to work at any pace - and it was promptly handed back. Very frustrating and annoying as this feature appears
to have been removed. With Windows 8 pitched directly at the tablet market, surely this setting is in there somewhere - I can't think of any reason why it would be removed.
Any help much appreciated,
Andrew

I fully agree with ssxIdent and all other posters who find the new touch keyboard rather dumb.
There is no point in explaining why MS has decided to do things this or that way and what philosophic reasons they can come up with. MS needs to understand that software has to be accepted by the users and should not irritate them.
But this is irritating.
I thought one of the main concerns of MS was to be as intuitive as possible and provide a most satisfying user experiance - this is definetly not.
Has anyone at MS ever tried to e. g. rename several files in a directory with the touch keyboard? Especially when you get to the bottom of the screen. Then you not only need to have show/hide the keyboard permanently, you even have to bother moving it or
resize the window. That is NO GOOD USER EXPERIANCE!
I'd find it intuitive, if there was a way for developers in WPF or in Windows Forms to tag any UI element if it
Needs a keyboard (making the touch keyboard appear automatically) or
Would like a keyboard (showing a symbol next to the box, just like the X in WindowsStoreApps.TextBox, to trigger the keyboard or make it pop up automatically, if the keyboard had an option that can be set by the user to respond to these UI elements) or
Can have a keyboard (behaviour as is now)
Once an application was built this way, users would intuitively be able to navigate through their beloved apps haveing the keyboard at hand when they will need it anyway, being able to access it just with a twitch of the hand if they want it and not being
annoyed by it when they normally would not need it AND not being annoyed by permanently having to show/hide/show/hide that dratted thing by making miles of hand movement for nothing.
For applications that are not tailormade this way some options to adjust the keyboard behaviour would help, too. Just provide an option to hook the keyboard to any focus change, and give users a selection of options to what major control types the keyboard
should respond. For geeks you could even provide white list where they can add the GUIDs for classes the keyboard should show up automatically, a black list where the keyboard has to disappear and a gray list where the keyboard comes up on enter and disappears
on leave.
Some other thing I'm not happy with:
I know Modern UI came somehow via Windows Phone 7, but our tablets, touch enabled laptops, ... are no telephones, so why has the touch keyboard numpad have the "1" at the top left corner and not at the bottom left like every other hardware keyboard
or even the MS Windows OSK???????? In this point I contradict the explanation in the otherwise quite interesting article about the
Design Concept because typing in numbers has more often to do with maths than with telephoning or switching TV channels. And calculators have the 1,2,3 in the bottom row, as have HW keyboards. The other misconception lies therin that you don't need to find
1,2,3 quicker with your eyes when you are typing lots of numbers e. g. into spreadsheets. The fingers of HW keyboard, calculator or cash register users are so used to the conventional position of the digits that won't be easy to reshape. Additionally when
typing in quantities of numbers right handed users (90% of world population)  will have the hand rest on the keyboard, the thumb on 0 and index finger, middle finger, ring finger doing their respective columns low value low down, high value high up. Who
is dialing phone numbers or changing TV channels this way? But what will users do more often with the numpad - especially when dealing with loads of input data?
Why can we not at least have digits on the alpha keyboard like on Android with long press on "Q"="1" ... "P"="0"? Password policy sometimes forces you to add digits in a PW, calling for switch alpha/num/alpha/num which
is annoying, too! Even with the peek thingy, since you need two hands.
Why is there no indication what special characters are hidden behind a long press? It's possible when you press Ctrl, despite most people already knowing what Ctrl+C means. e. g. where is the paragraph sign "§"on the touch keyboard? Or have
you left it out, so lawyers can't sue you for developing this touch keyboard ;-) You have added a set of emojos, but forgotten to put a character on that is on virtually any other keyboard??? Rather give us a layer user/developers could fill with their own
set of special characters and swap the Ctrl hints for a special character preview.
When I have my keyboard docked I can split the alpha key gaining access to the ODD numpad in the middle, but why can I not have the numpad when the alpha stays unsplit in the middle having a big black block to its left and right - there was space, why have
you not used it properly??? Nevermind feeling crowded, as mentioned in the article, give us an checkbox in keyboard options than we can decide if we want it or not. Since the article argues that users tend to get comfortable with the keyboard after a while
and needn't look at it, this "over crowded" feeling would fade away just the same. Or you might even dim it a bit when there is no finger near it.
Where are the Fn keys? Give us an option - we'll decide if we want it e. g. on the left side of the alpha block. Just as with numpad this could be dimmed, too.
I'd have a lot more suggestions to throw into this, but I fear you'll not even pick up on the easiest or most fundamental ones.
Prove me wrong! Please do! I dare you!!!

  • Bootcamp Print Screen Keyboard Shortcut??

    Hi
Looking for a print screen keyboard shortcut. I don't think my FN key is activated because the normal shift+fn+f11 doesn't achieve the print screen result I was looking for. Normally I would use Snippet, but I am doing an online course and I need to be able to print screen using Microsot Excel 2010. I need to paste it onto another sheet but I am unable to due having no working solution. Snippet won't work because its run on it's own desktop. My only guess is either a keyboard shortcut/a macro on Excel.
Thank you for reading my query

What does Bootcamp have to do with this?

  • Keyboard Shortcuts? Show Desktop?

Is there a possible keyboard shortcut to "show desktop"? I can't seem to find one on the macbook...

you can program 'hot corners' on assign a particular key to do that. here are the steps for each
Hot Corners: You can go into one corner of the screen and the computer will perform the assigned action. 1. go into System Prefs 2. Click 'Exposé and Spaces' 3. Click the scroll menu of the corner you want to activate and scroll down to 'Desktop' 4. Go all the way into that particular corner and the desktop should appear. Go back into the corner to show all your windows again.
Assigning a Key: 1. On the same pane as Hot Corners, click the scroll menu next to "Show Desktop" and click the key you want to assign to show the desktop when pressed. Make sure that this key has no other function, such as volume or brightness.
I know that's a lot of info, but it's worth writing it

  • [Solved] Tiling window managers and on-screen keyboards

I've got a small, old tablet pc with a 10" touchscreen, and was hoping to use a tiling window manager so that I could have an on-screen keyboard (onboard, cellwriter etc) stuck to the bottom third of the screen, and other applications 'fullscreened' in the rest of it, preferably in tabs.
I've tried a few tabbed tiling wm's (i3, xmonad, wmii, ion3) and while I can get the layout I want, I'm unable to use the onscreen keyboard due to focus switching - clicking on the 'keys' of the keyboard (or in fact, moving the cursor into it's frame/window/whatever) moves the focus to the keyboard, so it sends the typed text to itself.
Since tiling wm's are usually targeted at keyboard users, I'm having trouble finding which wm's listen to the onscreen keyboard's 'nofocus' properties. Does anyone know of any tiling wm's that respect that property and work with onscreen keyboards? Or even if there are simple config changes I can do to stop the keyboard from getting focus?
Failing that, any other window managers I could try? fwiw, I really liked twindy (http://www.niallmoody.com/twindy/about.htm) but it suffered from the same problem (and wasted a fair amount of space with its sidebar).
    Thanks!

Ah, thanks, that got me looking for and finding an xmonad patch that should make it not focus on onboard and cellwriter, amongst others: http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=177 Its a shame that the patch still isn't in the darcs repo, but I guess a working open office is more important that the few people using onscreen keyboards!
...time to compile from source... ugh - only got a single core running at 900kHz...

  • On Screen Keyboard Glitch in Tablet Mode - On Screen Keyboard minimizes / disappears / slides down

    Hi there -
New Yoga owner here ( just bought it yesterday) and within minutes of setting the computer up I noticed that the on screen keyboard was malfunctioning when the yoga is in tablet mode. Specifically, it pops up for about a second and then, without me touching or clicking or doing anything, it quickly slides back down. repeated attempts to bring up the keyboard end up, frustratingly, with the same result. what is perplexing to me is the on screen keyboard works fine in laptop mode (when I need it least).
Someone else already started a post on this BUT it was marked as 'solved' (which it wasn't) so I figured I'd start new thread. The solution on the previous thread was to simply 'refresh' windows to get rid of any new drivers that were downloaded since purchasing the yoga, but I did not download or update anything prior to this problem arising (as I said, the problem seemed to occur within a few minutes of turning the machine on for the first time). In any case, I tried the refresh and it did not work so clearly my problem is not that I downloaded an incompatible or faulty driver. Please Help! I love this machine and I'm trying to see past the other flaws I've noticed so far (subtle screen flickering, inconsistent touch sensitivity etc), but this issue is starting to really undermine my confidence in the product quality and, from a productivity standpoint, it is a real deal breaker to not have full tablet functionality.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had the same problem with the disappearing virtual keyboard within hours of starting to use my new Yoga 13.  I read somewhere that it was a problem with an incompatible Synaptics driver, and when I looked in the control panel, it showed that the Synaptics driver had been updated on my Yoga as of the day I bought it.  I think somehow by agreeing to automatic updates of the software, the Synaptics driver is updated to an incompatible version.   So what I did was I removed the Synaptics driver, using the Windows program uninstaller tool, rebooted, and then found the Synaptics driver at the Lenovo site which is specifically labelled as the Yoga 13 driver.  I installed that, and the keyboard is now working fine.

  • Keyboard Shortcuts Missing / Variables Panel Error

This has been going on for at least a couple of weeks now.  I'm currently using CS4, Windoxs XP (SP3) and Firefox.  Every time I open the Illustrator program, the following message pops up:
    "Error loading plugins.  Variables Panel.aip."
So I click OK and the workstation screen opens up.  Only problem now is that the keyboard shortcuts for Open, Close, Copy, Paste, etc. are missing and I can't even use the keyboard to zoom up and down on the layer section.
I have read several forums on how to fix the problem short of uninstalling and reinstalling the program.  I tried going to:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4\Plug-ins\Extensions
...and removed the "Variables Panel" plugin, then went to CA Technologies and removed, then restored the Win32/FakeAlertYS files.
Opened the program.  Not only did it not work, but it crashed in the process!
I then tried updating Firefox to 3.6.  That didn't work either.
I'm running out of things to try but I guess my only resolution is to contact the tech support and shell out the 42 dollars in order to get the program working again.

That's what I ended up doing, with some technical help...and now it's
    working properly.

  • Keyboard shortcut missing?

I use keyboard shortcuts a lot and apple+1 for opening and closing the iTunes window was one I used a lot. In iTunes 7, that seems to be missing, or maybe I can't find it in the help file... anyone know that could help?
    Thanks
    Sami

Actually, I think you just figured it out, the cmd-L does work to show the current song, you can see it under the file menu, and if the window is closed, when you press it it brings up the itunes window!

  • Print screen keyboard shortcut

can anyone tell me the keyboard shortcut for print screen?
    thanks!

    Hello Earthworm Jim,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you are wanting to actually print the window of app to printer, then command+P.
If you are trying to get a screen shot, then here are a few hints.
The result of the following will be a PNG on the desktop, unless you change the default locations and file type.
    1. To capture entire screen:
    CmdShift3
    2. To get a screen shot of just a selected area:
*CmdShift4 then highlight wanted area with mouse*.
    3. To copy to the clipboard so you can paste into a document: (this is probably the one you are wanting)
    CtrlCommandShift-3(or4)
Also you can use the GRAB app in Utilities, which will also capture the mouse pointer and save as TIFF.

Even changing my regional settings to use the full stop "." I still get the comma in the numeric layout of the  On-Screen Keyboard. Changed the location/region to South Africa as well, still not helping.

I don't want to set the windows forms to 'maximum'. This will make the buttons on the form looks mess.

    Hello Mingxu,
Maybe you mean your project is a windows form application, and you deployed it with ClickOnce and get that installed, right?
    >>My Clickonce application can properly display on my working station (full screen), the problem is when it runs on this windows tablet, it can't be properly displayed for full screen.
Which form has this issue, the one when you installing that application or the form you are running the application?
I will based on the result to get the proper forum to help you, and if that is an issue about the form of your windows form application, then this is the right forum for your issue.

  • Google Search Keyboard Shortcut Missing in Safari

I've noticed that the keyboard shortcut for "search with Google" keyboard shortcut (command+shift+L) has been replaced by opening the new Reading List drawer.  The shortcut still works in other cocoa apps, but has been superceeded by the new reading list shortcut in Safari (similar to how it's superceeded by flag email in Mail).
Is there anyway to change the shortcut for opening the Reading List drawer so that I can have search with Google back to command+shift+L on Safari.
I've grown quite used to using this shortcut and it's much less enjoable to command+option+f over to the search window and paste in the phrase I want googled, than it was having a single shortcut.
    Thanks to anyone who knows.

Similar problem I've found but fixed. I have a broken arm and it's difficult to hold down cmd and click or do the shortcut (which doesn't work anymore), so I found a workaround based on http://rentzsch.tumblr.com/post/5794765921/search-with-google-using-chrome
It will take less than a minute to implement.
Open Automater -> Choose Service -> Find 'Run Shell Script' action and drag to workflow window -> Choose '/usr/bin/ruby' from Shell drop down menu -> type the following
    require 'cgi'
    `open 'http://www.google.com/search?q=#{CGI.escape(STDIN.read.chomp)}'`
Then save it with a title like "Search With Google (New Window)" and you are done. Then rather than using the shortcut, just right click the highlighted text you want to search and you can use this new service.

  • SAP Login screen - keyboard shortcut not working

Part way through an SSO rollout (Imprivata Onesign) and have come across one terminal server that is not behaving as normal ie keyboard shortcut control+i does not position the cursor in the Client field on the SAP login screen. Instead it is treating the key combination as a standard Tab.
Has anyone come across this before or can anyone suggest how to diagnose.
I have checked the registry and there doesn't appear to be any custom keyboard shortcuts defined.
    OS =  Win 2003 Enterprise SP2
    SAPGUI = SAP Gui 7.10 Patch 14

  • Application specific keyboard shortcuts missing

    Hey all,
Just noticed that the 2 or 3 app specific keyboard shortcuts I set up in sys prefs are no longer listed. They work, but don't show up in sys prefs for keyboard shortcuts.
This means I can't edit the existing ones if need be. I also don't exactly remember them all and it would be nice to replicate them for friends or other computers in the future.
    Any ideas/fixes?

  • Keyboard Shortcuts missing after last upgrade

Almost half of the System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts are not showing up as <Unknown Action> after the last upgrade.  I noticed this because my shortcut for terminal no longer worked.  I also had a problem with how the last upgrade changed my /usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop file...  However, even reverting to the original compiz.desktop file I had built, this issue isn't resolved.

Looks like you now how to open up compiz-settings and turn on gnome-compatibility plugin
    That would resolve.
If not you can use "commands" to set any command you like...
[Edit] You are using compiz, right?

  • In the current screen keyboard shortcuts, it says you can use "home" and "end" to go to the top and bottom of the screen. But it only works if I use Cntrl. Why?

I am not using Firefox 20 on a new Sony Tap 20 with a wireless VAIO keyboard. All other keyboard shortcuts appear to work as usual. With my old computer, I did not have to hit cntrl to use home and end. (And yes -- I checked -- my num lock key is off.
