Windows 8 Updates fail

KB 2769165 and 2770917 fail to install on Windows 8 Pro

This issue can be fixed temporarily by turning off the checkbox for 'Check for Microsoft Updates'.  Those would be for things other than windows.  Strangely, when you select this to not check (by default on install it is checked) it disappears
from the screen for later reversal.  This has fixed all the pc's I have assessed that were having trouble updating windows.  This is a clue to the real issue, which Microsoft should be addressing, as it disables all other updates from Microsoft which
I would imagine have to do with Office, Hardware and others...  This is definitely a HUGE issue since no Windows Defender updates can be performed while the windows update feature is broken, exposing the user to malware that they would not necessarily
have been exposed to.  In addition, it forces the end users to look for solutions since Microsoft, in each and every blog entry, forum entry or email shoots recommendations at the users who may or may not be technically savvy to perform.  Many of
the recommendations could have harmful results to the end users pc if they were not to apply them correctly, and in many cases, the recommendations are written in such a manner that the sequence and application of the recommendation are unclear and left to
the end user to assume.  Not good.  You better get this fixed and soon.  I will not be recommending anyone migrate to Windows 8 new or upgraded until this issue is addressed, fully and without question.  This is a reproduce-able issue that
can and has been reproduced by many, many end users to date and for the life of me I cannot understand why Microsoft has not reproduced the issue and created a surefire solution that works all the time, in every case.

  • Windows Update failed to check for updates with error 0x800B0001

    Hi all,
I have a WSUS installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box, I have a new Windows Server 2012 box (joined to domain) that cannot get updates from the WSUS, whenever I try to search for new updates I receive the following error in event viewer:
Windows Update failed to check for updates with error 0x800B0001
Note: I cannot see the Win2K12 server in the WSUS console under computers node.

I couldn't get it to run even after installing the mentioned KB fixes. So I investigated the error myself, and found a "hack" that seems to fix the issue. Wrote up a small piece on it here:
    http://tplive.azurewebsites.net/2013/12/windows-update-error/
You and about a thousand other people have reported "I had already installed [the update], but installing it AGAIN fixed the problem.", which is almost assuredly a simple indication that the original installation of the update failed, and you simply did
not recognize that the installation of the update was not successful.
The fact that the /selfupdate folder was corrupted (read: missing files) pretty much says it all. There's no bug. Your installation of the update simply failed. (Or, the server wasn't healthy to begin with and you got what you got.)
Bottom line: The only known cause for a client-side 0x800B0001 error code is that the WSUS server has not been
    properly and completely patched.

Windows 8 Windows Update fails with error 80244FFF

    Hi @SURAJITsaha ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 14-b049tu Sleekbook and issues with a Windows update.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system at the time of purchase.
Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues.
Plug the power adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.
You might have to temporarily disable your virus protection.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Windows update fails with error 0x800F0922 for KB2961072 on Windows 8.1 desktop

I just tried to install updates on my Dell desktop tower running Windows 8.1 Pro. The first time it said that updates did not succeed and that it had to roll them back. I started using computer and now that same update notification showed up again.
I tried installing it once more and got the same story -- it rolled them back. So I'm afraid I'm about to go into a deadloop with Microsoft here.
On the side note let me say that I am not a fan of stopping my work to reboot computer and loose 10-15 min on this foolishness, so if there's a way to make these go away, I'd follow it.
When I pull up an update window I get these:
As for "security update for internet explorer", if that's the hold-up, I'd gladly pick the one that says, "Remove internet explorer 11 FOREVER" because I never use it and I don't know why I even have it?
Anyway, when the update fails and gets rolled back after a reboot here's what I see in the event log:

    Hi,
to solve this issue please follow the instructions given in this link:

  • Windows Update fails on Server 2012 R2 Virtual Machine

I have set up a virtual network with two virtual machines. The first VM is Server 2008 R2 and is set up as a domain controller. The second VM is Server 2012 R2, and has been joined to the domain.  The DC (TestVM1) is also set up as a DNS server.
From TestVM2 (Server 2012 R2), I am able to log in using a domain login, and I am able to browse to a public website.
I was able to run Windows Updates from TestVM1, but when I attempt to run Windows Updates from TestVM2, it fails.
The Windows Update client shows "Error(s) found:" and "Code 8024402F".

This is blocking further work.  Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time.  Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed
that as a test and got the same error message.  I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up.  No joy as well.  This is a VM server running on ESXi 5.1.  Server 2008 servers dont seem to have
an issue.  Server 2012 server don't seem to have an issue.  Only this new Server 2012 R2 server.  My logs are below:

  • G500 win8.1 window updates failing to install.

I recently purchased a Lenovo G500 in France (intel I7 2.2 ghz, 4gb ram, 500gb) with Windows 8.1 as the OS, and just got the Internet back last wednesday, so April 30th.
Since then, I've had a total 3 microsoft updates, which in and of itself is not terribly interesting, except that two of these three updates have failed, leading to the following message:
"Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"
Obviously in French, but that's the translation I got anyway.
So here's my question: How often does this happen? Microsoft's site tells me to wait for about 30 minutes while it resolves, but the first time it took me close to an hour (and after the 3rd restart after it showed me this, I manually turned it off after it shut down and then it installed properly). The second update worked fine and I had no problems (albeit it took well over 30 minutes to install though), yet the third (this morning) also failed to install (but this time it took less than 30 minutes, although I noticed it froze on the lenovo screen after a restart, where the "loading" circles didn't show up, although I don't know after which restarted this occurred, as I had left it to run its course while I ate breakfast).
Now that I think about it, the first update error occurred after a system error which required a restart (cause unkown, some kind of error along the lines of 0x0000000A, but I found nothing I I'm guessing I didn't see correctly), and last night I noticed my laptop had frozen when I close it, so I manually shut it down. Coincidence? The second update worked fine, and it was the only time I had maually selected restart and update, so this could be a plausible theory, although I have no idea why it froze last night. Maybe I closed it too quickly after closing chrome (although I have no idea why this would cause a freeze...).
So my questions are as follow: Has this happened to any win 8.1 users, are your updates abnormally long (well over 10 minutes), do they occurr extremely frequently (every 2-3 days, if not every day), and what could the causes be for the failure to install/reverting changes issue?
Thank you in advance for any help.

There are lots of possible reasons. Other programs interfering, insufficient permissions, AV blocking, – the list is endless.
I could say do a forum seach but that facility is as useless as the Adobe installers.

  • Windows Updates Failed to Configure in Windows 8 in Lenovo G500s

I am purchased my G500s in October 2013 and tried to install windows 8 updates first time. Before running updates I deleted all my data and switched laptop into default condition using One Key Recovery.
But while windows updates are being configured I am getting a message " Failed to Configure windows Updates, Reverting Changes" which is lasting for more than an hour and my laptop is restarting several time in this duration.
As I am running updates immediately after running One Key Recovery and there is no data on other drives, so this problem is not being caused by any Virus. My problem is similar as mentioned in this link   Failure configuring Windows Updates - Windows 8  but I laptop came with Nitro 8, while this link is about problems caused by Nitro 7. Lenovo has not updated this article since 2012.
My laptop is pre installed with these important softwares:
Nitro Pdf 8, Mcafee Internet Security, CyberLink You Cam, Power Dvd.
If anyone can tell what is the cause of this problem I will be thankful to him.
    Solved!

  • Windows update fails to distribute to DP, source file does not exist

    Hi,
Users reported they could not install Windows updates. Some hundred should get their updates mandatory end of this week. We found out the Windows update package did not get on the distribution points.
    We tried to:
*update the distribution points, but that did not work
*deleted the package from the distribution point and tried to redistribute it but that did not work either
The logfile mentions that it cannot access the package or it doesn't exist: "\\ourdomain\SCCM\WindowsUpdates\d8b72e39-6103-49fb-b1f6-14e096dd3cd6" (doesn't exist and it does not indeed) or the SMS service
    cannot access it.
STC00187 is our package with Windows updates.
Note: the package is > 24 GB in size. We did use
    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Remove-Expired-Superseded-f35495e1
     to cleanup expired updates.
    Please advise howto troubleshoot. J.

Reason of latest status (my latest update) was linked to same fact  "The source directory \\ourdomain\SCCM\WindowsUpdates\d8b72e39-6103-49fb-b1f6-14e096dd3cd6 doesn't exist or the SMS service cannot access it,"

http://www.mssccmfaq.de/2012/06/21/finde-das-software-update/ I found out it was a superseded update for Internet Explorer 8 which we don't use anyway. So I deleted it and distmgr.log continues now. However, the image above (latest update didn't change
    to "in progress".
Just curious, can't I delete any superseded/expired update within the package?

  • Dv6-2170eo windows update fails after recovery

I have a HP dv6-2170eo netbook with Windows 7 Home premium (64-bit). My origin hard drive (640GB) failed and I replaced it with 1TB hard drive. I used the recovery DVD's that I made when I bought the laptop and then reloaded Windows 7 on the new hard drive.
After reloading ,  Windows Update does not work.
This is the error I get:
Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.
I can't even install Windows Defender or Microsoft Security Essential
    Intel Chipset driver from 2009-06-04
    My internet access is OK.
I have restarted my netbook and the error is the same.
I have reloaded Windows 7 and the error is the same
    Please help me
    Haggann

I had the same problem with an HP G72. If you have an Intel Chipset, goto Intels website and download there "Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver" and install it. I had the exact same problems and this fixed them. For some unknown reason this driver is not available on HP's website. I just Googled the driver and it took me straight to Intels website where I downloaded it. Get the driver that you can run from within windows and not the one that runs from a floppy.
    Good Luck,

Recently I.E. 9 update can not be installed (tried both windows update & manual install). So this just become something serious.
From my troubleshooting, it points to a corrupt .Net framework. Unfortunately there is no way to simply repair .Net framework 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 on windows 7 since they are core component installed with the OS. (Bad decision by MS?) IMHO this is the root cause
for this problem. Base on internet search there are lots of other case that end up as unresolved!
Note that I have tried using dotnetfx_cleanup_tool ( version 6.0.3790.0). Only to conclude from the log files that for Windows 7. The framework mentioned above never get removed. Hence the premise behind the tool is misdirection. The tool just say cleanup
is successful without any visible indicator of saying otherwise. Should warn about it not being able to clean up core .Net Framework.
I have try a lot of troubleshooting step from Technet & Support.Microsoft.com. This is where I am stuck now. Which I think is the most relevant at this stage
    Repair Corrupt .Net 2.0 & 3.0
Open CMD as administrator and run:
       C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
So this means I can not refer to CBS.log and checksur.log for corrupt file. In fact checksur.log just say
       Summary:
       Seconds executed: 19
        Found 1 errors
CSI Unable to Query Store Version Total count: 1
Which just repeating back the error in CBS.log
    Need help on the following
    A. From the previous thread, according to Tim
    Quan (<abbr class="affil">Microsoft Contingent Staff</abbr><abbr class="affil">, Moderator).</abbr>
From the log, there are quite a lot of files missing or corrupt on your system.
I am afraid that you may need to perform an in-place upgrade or reinstall the system.
Reinstall the system is not an option (development machine, need the Visual Studio. Too much environment need to set up if reinstall, etc). So please let me know what is and how
to do  "In place upgrade". I have seen this term being thrown around without any explanation.
    B. The real solution is a tool to
really clean up and repair the core of windows, be it .Net Framework or whatever else. This is really sorely missing from Windows. Consider that people say Unix/Linux is complicated and hard to maintain.
When the fact is to do the same on Unix/Linux is just several shell command.
Anticipating respond from MS staff or MVP regarding this issue on how to do
    B. The old ways (Circa Windos 98) is to do a repair install using install CD, which I have. But I don't think that the CD have repair install option.
    Cheers and TIA!
    * Edited to clarify on Win7 install CD don't have repair install functionality.

Uh oh, I'm in the same boat ... Windows 7 64-bit, none of the fixits work, can't run sfc /scannow or do the inplace upgrade as I get the same errors everyone else reports.  STATUS_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT is a total showstopper, sounds like a half-baked
feature!  I see the original reporter of this bug posted in 2011.  Unacceptable there is no authoritative fix as of yet!  I agree with others, I won't be reinstalling Windows any time soon, I've got too much invested in my install!  All
my software and software installs work perfectly, only Windows Update and Add/Remove Windows Components seems to be having fits...
I notice a pattern with a lot of the people replying to this thread:  they're developers with developer boxes and software installs.  Some .Net install botched our component stores?  How is it possible in a modern operating system there isn't
a way to detect and drop the corrupt metadata/files/frames/tables/whatever and get back to a repairable state?  Who's in charge up there??
I'm just going to run unpatched until a fix arrives, which I expect will arrive someday real soon now.  Here's what I want: give me a fixit or a manual process to clear the component store enough to allow me to actually complete the inplace upgrade
(which seems like the only method that has a prayer of repairing our installs.)
I guarantee Windows 7 will be my last version of windows if no fix ever materializes to this microsoft-engineered bug/corruption.  I'm not going to put up with rubbish.

  • 2008 r2 Windows update Failed with 8000FFFF

    HI
One of our clients has not run windows update in sometime. It was setup for automatic updates so they had never checked their server manually for updates.
We have tried to reset the components using several methods from a whole day of gooling this fix.  During the night last night we run scandisk with repair which was mentioned on several other threads.
after resetting the windows update components
When we click install now. it immediately fails with error 8000FFFF
I then opened event viewer to find the log. It lead me to a local file which reads:
    Version=1
    EventType=WindowsUpdateFailure
    EventTime=130463490243270806

ReportDescription=A Windows update did not install properly. Sending the following information to Microsoft can help improve the software.
I then googled 174EAAC7-5A3D-448F-BE6F-D6FE450E1DCF and found an article advising me to try and install system update readiness tool which too failed with the 8000FFFF
I have checked for viruses/malware and that seems ok.  MS Security essentials is able to download and install updates just fine.
The machine is running IE9.  I tried downloading both IE10 & IE11 which say components are required before installing the selected IE and takes me to a web page.
I downloaded all the x64 updates, when i execute they all fail with the 8000FFFF error.
we also tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-us which did not help it failed at the end with:
Can anyone suggest anything that we could do to try and fix this error?

    Hi,
Sorry for the delay. According to the log, you get
    0x80190194
    0x80190194 -2145844844 BG_E_HTTP_ERROR_404
The requested URL does not exist on the server.
Is there any problem with the other computers in the same network? If so, I guess there could be some problem with your network. Confirm this with your proxy server or ISP.
If not please reset windows update component and try again.
How do I reset Windows Update components?
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-au
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows update fails when isatap enabled

    Hi there,
I'm using windows 8.1 pro x64 and encounter one problem.
My desktop has only one ethernet adapter, and I've disabled its ipv6 protocol. Insteadly, I use isatap tunnel to access ipv6 network.
The problem is that, if the isatap tunnel works, windows update will try to fetch updates via ipv6 and fail; while if I diable the isatap tunnel, windows update will work fine.
I wonder how to force windows update to use ipv4 access while isatap tunnel enabled.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
We cannot force Windows update to use ipv4 or ipv6.
In default Windows prefix policy,IPv6 addresses are preferred over IPv4 addresses.
I suggest we add a prefix policy to prefer IPv4 addresses over IPv6 to test it.
    Please follow the steps:
1.Press Win+R, type regedit, and press enter.
2.In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters \
3.Double-click DisabledComponents to change the DisabledComponents entry.
Note  If the DisabledComponents entry is unavailable, you must create it.
To do this, follow these steps:
a.In the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
b.Type DisabledComponents, and then press ENTER.
    c.Double-click DisabledComponents.
4.Type 0x20  to prefer IPv4 over IPv6 by changing entries in the prefix policy table.

  • Windows update fails to install graphic driver

    Hello everyone,
    I have a problem, I recently installed Windows 10 Technical build 9926.
Windows update shows me that there is a update available for my Nvidia geforce GT 520 M card.
If I install the driver the installation fails.  I have tried this for a couple of times but the problem stays.
Does anyone have a solution for this problem.
    My System specifications are:
Windows 10 Technical preview build 9926 ( upgrade from windows 8.1 via windows update)
    RAM: 6 GB
    CPU: Intel Core i5 2430M
    GPU: Nvidia geforce GT 520M

For what it's worth, as a rule, I NEVER install the video drivers offered via Windows Update. They have always been bad news for me. Case in point: I just upgraded my Dell Optiplex 9030 AiO to the Win 10 Ent Preview Build 9926. This PC has an AMD Radeon
R7 M265 video chipset in it, and the system automatically went to Windows Update to get the driver for it. As soon as the driver activated, the screen went blank and stayed that way. The only way to fix it was to roll back the the driver installation
with System Restore. When the PC rebooted, I unplugged the network cable so it couldn't attempt to install the flaky driver again. I downloaded the latest drivers from AMD directly and installed them. That fixed the problem.
So, my advice to you is to use the latest Windows 8/8.1 drivers for your card from the manufacturer's website. DO NOT USE VIDEO DRIVERS THAT ARE OFFERED VIA WINDOWS UPDATE. Other hardware drivers are usually okay, but the video drivers always seem to
    be whacked in some way.

  • Windows Update "Fails". Help....

    Hello All,
Toshiba Laptop running Vista Home Premium....
The Windows Update feature has been failing to work for the last month(99% failure) with only a couple of exceptions.  Prior to last month it worked 99%.  It goes through a long process of attempting to update but then fails.  It encounters an "unknown error"  Code 8000FFFF....
    1) How can I correct this issue as updates have become virtually impossible?
    2) He's been having some software/update issues as such.  Will upgrading to Windows 7 solve many of these issues?  I realize it's an older computer, but other than these software glitches, everything runs fine.  I just figured if he could get a retail version of Win 7 under $100.00 maybe he could justify keeping it longer.  He just cannot correct these issues and thus maintain himself....
    Thanks,
