Windows 8 will not boot - After install virtual box (virtualization)

I installed virtual box and now I am unable to start window 8.
I read online that there is a known issue with virtualization on windows 8. They suggested trying to toggle virtualization on/off in the bios which has not solved my problem. Does anyone know of anything else I can do to get my install back? I really do
not want to have to re-install windows.  I have only had windows 8 installed for three weeks!

I tried upgrading from VirtualBox 4.3.12 to 4.3.20 and ended up with an unbootable machine (Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit). It would come up to the desktop but nothing would work - there were no icons on the desktop, the tray applications didn't seem to be loading,
the transparent task bar was shown as a block of solid colour. Pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL brought up the menu where I could choose Task Manager, but the Task Manager itself would not show up, just a dialog warning me that a process was not responding and asking
if I wanted to end the task (I forget the exact wording). Clicking "End task" that dialog removed the dialog only for it to appear again a minute later. It was not possible to do anything with the machine or to open the Task Manager.
I have updated through a number of versions of VirtualBox without issue. 4.3.20 seems to be a bad update. Unless some other recent update has changed something in Windows so that the VirtualBox update now conflicts.
I forced the system to turn off then used System Restore to reset it to an earlier time. System Restore told me it had failed with an error, but then when I rebooted the machine a dialog came up at the desktop saying that System Restore had succeeded. It
works again now but I am stuck with the older version of VirtualBox.

  • Brand New 27" iMac i5 will not boot after installing software updates

I just purchased my new iMac 2 nights ago. I have been getting it setup with my apps, mobile me account, etc, and luckily just setup time machine and let it do a full backup.
I just ran Software Update for the first time, and now the machine will not boot. It hangs on the grey screen for about 1 minute before the Apple logo comes up. About 30 seconds after the Apple logo comes up, the grey spinning gear shows up, and about 1 minute after that I get the grey screen of death (You must restart your computer).
Any suggestions? A little frustrated here....

If you mean did I receive error messages, No, I didn't. However, the desktop reverted to the default purple night-sky looking thing, my applications and such all disappeared from the dock, and I couldn't open any files or folders (you don't have permission to ...), etc. I tried signing out and back in, rebooting, using a second admin account on the computer, creating a new admin account, etc. I ran Disk Utility, hardware checker, etc. No errors were found, and nothing changed. I could see all my files and folders, but they had a small red circle in the corner, indicating "locked" or "no permission".
I'll find the lines from the console log if that will help. The error showed up immediately and is in the computer's attempt to access the user/library/application support/sync services and same path to user/library/logs/sync services/log. (or something reasonably close to this. If you can use the exact path, I will get it) The link between my settings and files, and a password is apparently corrupted or something, so that the computer won't even let me change the desktop or any file, so I can't save, edit or discard anything, and can't drag files to another computer on the home network.
At least I'm still under the 90 day warranty, so I can call tomorrow. At this point, the SMART check says the drive is good, so I assume it's software. The only things new are the three auto Apple software updates I installed yesterday, so I immediately suspect them. But who knows?
Does this help you at all?

  • Windows 8.1 Pro will not boot after installing iTunes 11.1.5.5

It's a little hard for me to accept that this is true, but the symptoms seem to be pointing the direction of the title of this thread.  I have an all-in-one touch-screen Gateway computer that came with windows 7 (yeah, a win7 machine that came with touch, yeesh) and I put windows 8.1 pro 64-bit on it with a clean install (actually windows 8 was the clean install and then I did the free microsoft store upgrade to 8.1).  It has 4GB of RAM and has a Pentium Dual Core cpu @ 2.2 Ghz.  It was running fine with the previous version of iTunes, but as soon as I updated to iTunes 11.1.5.5 (and there may have been other apple things that updated too (ie quicktime of course), the computer prompted me for a reboot and froze during the reboot process (before it even shut down).  Then it had trouble booting into windows.  I ran startup repair to no avail and decided to do a sytem restore.  My most recent restore point was from a few weeks back, before iTunes was even installed at all on the machine.  I went back to that point and the machine worked fine again.  Then I installed iTunes 11.1.5.5 and the same exact problem occurred - it froze while shutting down after the iTunes install and then would not boot into windows 8.  I did another system restore and have not put iTunes back on.  The system is working fine.  I'm going to try to find out if there's a way to download older versions of iTunes, so that I can install it, but the bigger issue here is: Is this a legitimate bug/incompatibility with some hardware or software or driver that I have on this computer?  I run a computer support business so I know my way around but I don't have time to troubleshoot this from scratch.  Anyone else seeing this?  Apple employees...a little help here?  Any input?

let it sit for about 30 min and still got nothing
I then did a "hard shutdown(just pressed power button till it turned off the computer)"
That may not have been long enough.  But a "hard shutdown" would definitely have been construed as a problem due to the update.
Asus apparently is a known problem case...

  • Windows NT does not boot after installing NI-CAN 1.6.0 or security update

We are running Windows NT 4.0 SP 6 english with MS IE 5.5.
On one machine we had NI-CAN 1.6.0 installed. After installing the security update from Microsoft over the web the machine did not boot.
On another machine the security update was installed. After installing NI-CAN 1.6.0 the machine booted but hangs during logon. On this machine we installed Windows NT, MS IE 5.5 the security update and NI-CAN from new and the effect was the same.
Does anyone else have similar experience with this problem?
Machines with Windows 2000 and XP work well with NI-CAN 1.6.0.

    Hi,
I haven't found any known issues. I going to try it out here. What's the security update you're installing?. I noticed there's a bunch of them in the Microsoft web site.
What CAN hardware do you have (PCI, PCMCIA, etc)?.
Let me know this details and I'll try to reproduce the problem.

  • 10.5 will not boot after install

I did an upgrade install of 10.5 on my old tower. It said the install was complete and it needed to restart. I restarted and the apple logo screen came up. After several seconds the machine just shut down. Subsequent attempts to boot from this disk caused the same shut down. This system seems to ignore the keyboard so I couldn't boot from the dvd. I finally pulled the wire on disk with the 10.5 system, restarted and let the machine find another disk with 10.3 and that booted fine. Access to the disk with 10.5 seems fine. Anyone have any suggestions.

Reset the SMC for an intel based Mac or the PMU for a powerPC based Mac: Go to the main Support page here and search for "reset SMC" or "reset PMU" in the search field at the top LEFT of that page. In the list of Knowledge Base articles returned, find the instructions specific to your model of Mac. The final instruction will be to boot up normally, but instead, do the following:
Reset PRAM (which may help get your keyboard functional again): Shut down the computer, reboot while holding the 4 keys Apple-Option-P-R until you hear the SECOND startup chime, then release them. Your computer should continue to boot up normally. If it does, do NOT log in. Just shut down again.
Now try to boot once in Safe Mode: Boot while holding the "shift" key until you see the spinning gear on the gray Apple screen. A Safe Mode boot does various maintenance steps in the background. Be patient, this will take a while. You should, eventually, get to a log in window with the notation that you are booted in Safe Mode. Once again, do NOT log in. Just shut down again.
Now see if you can boot from your Leopard install DVD directly. Do this by holding the "option" key as you boot up. An "option" boot sometimes works even when the normal "c" boot doesn't. If the DVD is not already inserted, insert it shortly after pressing and releasing the power button. An "option" boot causes the system to go look for discs to boot from. This takes a while. When the cursor turns back into an arrow you should see your DVD in the list. Select the DVD and then click on the right arrow to the right of the list.
Presuming you can boot up in the install DVD, select your language when asked, and then, when you get to the screen where you would normally start an install, INSTEAD run Disk Utility from the menu bar. Select the line showing the name of your main hard drive in the column on the left. Now click on Repair Disk in the panel on the right. Presuming that completes normally now also do a Repair Disk Permissions in the panel on the right.
The next step would be to Quit out of Disk Utility and the Installer, selecting your main hard drive as the disk to boot from, and then Restart. But before you do so, read this Apple trouble-shooting article and see if any of the fixes they list here might apply to you -- in particular, if you have the DivX stuff they talk about needing to remove:

  • Windows 7 will not launch after installing itunes 11.1.5.

I initially tried updating itunes but it wouldn't so I uninstalled all Apple products in order per another post I found. Then reinstalled all products and itunes worked fine. I then shut down my computer for the night, then next day windows wouldn't launch.  I did a system restore prior to the itunes update and windows works fine.  I tried reinstalling itunes again and had the same problem.  So now I don't have itunes installed. Anyone know how to get itunes to not prevent windows 7 from launching?

My MBP (15", early 2009 model, 8GB RAM, 1TB internal drive) showed in Software Update as not needing any other updates, and I downloaded from Apple's site directly and installed iTunes 11.1.5 rather than doing it via Software Update (I've had some glitches with the 'direct' install from SU in the past, so I manually download updates from Apple's support website instead).
Hoping Apple will figure out what's wrong with this version under 10.6.8...

  • HP Pavilion 15-n268sa will not boot after windows update (windows 8.1)

After a series of windows update (windows 8.1) my HP Pavilion 15-n268sa will not boot up, no fan noises, no lights no nothing.
I have tried a "hard reset" a number of times with no success.
When the battery is present the white LED flashes 3 times when the power button is pressed.
    Please please help.

    Hello Cuffy,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you notebook will not boot after a series of Windows updates.
Can you tell me if you are able to access the HP Recovery Manager by repeatedly tapping the F11 key while the notebook turns on? If you can access this, try doing a system restore to before you installed the updates. If not I would suggest you go through this document: Computer Does Not Start and the LEDs Blink or the Computer Beeps.
If it's the Caps Lock light that is blinking this document will tell you exactly what the error is (spoiler: 3 beeps is a memory failure). This could also explain the failed updates. The updates are stored in the RAM before being applied to the operating system.
You can try reseating the RAM, or using only 1 of the RAM cards, as you have 2x4GB cards. If it still doesn't work with 1 card, try the other card to confirm it has failed.
You can replace defective cards via HP Phone Support if covered under warranty or at the HP Part Store if not covered. You can contact HP Technical Support at 1-800-474-6836 in North America. For all other regions click here.
    Hopefully this information helps!

I get the message that a recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

I'm glad you think the software has nothing to do with it, but perhaps you can also explain why this problem started as soon as I downloaded the desktop software and tried to restart the computer.

  • Mac Mini will not boot after Security Update 2008-007

    Hello,
A G4 Mac Mini machine I was asked to take a look at will not boot after the owner (succesfully) installed Security Update 2008-007 from Software Update. Booting always hangs at the blue screen after the Apple logo, and booting in verbose mode reveals that WindowServer is crashing repeatedly. Permissions and filesystems have been repaired, PRAM reset, etc. Safe boot also exhibits the same problem, but it is possible to boot to single user mode. Hardware checks out fine with diagnostic utilities.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Unfortunately, backups are not available (it's not my machine =).

Hi Arkku , and a warm welcome to the forums!
I'd certainly give Sig's advice a try first.

    # Robert: I'd rename the file via: mv /var/db/.applesetupdone /var/db/.applesetupdone.old

Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!

Or will this complicate the problem?.........

Wow, how about you guys just answer the dude's question instead of posting useless garbage. thanks for wasting everyone's time.
The only way I know of fixing this right now is unfortunately by doing a clean install. Thats not to say however that you won't run into the same problem down the road. To be honest, even tho Templeton's answer was useless, he's right. Seven is currently way more stable.

Installed Elements 10 on Vista 64-bit.  Did not uninstall Elements 9.  Now PE 9 will not load; get window Adobe Premiere Elements.exe - No Disk.  There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive\Harddisk2\DR2.  Tried disk 2 of 3 from package, nothing happens.

Tried twice, PE9 still locked up both times - I think the intent is to have me try PE10, because that did work!!!

Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I see that your telephone will not work after installing fax wizard, for your HP Officejet Pro 8615. I am happy to help!  What is the Operating System you are using? Windows or Mac? What version? If you do not know the Operating System you are using, please visit this website. Whatsmyos. If you do not need the fax, all you should have to do is unplug the phone cable from the back of the printer. That will prevent the printer from using the fax function.  If your phone continues not to work, I would consider contacting your phone provider.  Thank you for posting!  “Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.”
