Windows 98 halts when shutting down

Sorry if this is the wrong forum - can't see anything specific to possible software problems.
I recently made up a system for my brother (see spec below). It is running WIndows 98SE with all the latest updates from Microsoft.
Everything was working fine all the time I had it on test over two weeks. Despatched it off to him. Now, almost every time he shuts down it halts on "Windows is now shutting down" message and he has to turn it off manually. This inevitably results in Scandisk running when he reboots it.
The only thing that was initially changed was when he first switched it on, it detected his plug and play monitor and the "search for drivers" message came up. I can't remember whether he pressed cancel or yes. Either way, he didn't install any drivers externally because he never had a driver disk sent with the monitor. The monitor is a Hansol 19" CRT model B19CL. I recently fitted the same model (17") to somebody's system and, although I had the drivers, I never installed them and it didn't seem to make any difference. Should monitor drivers be installed?, I never have done in the past. Is it the lack of drivers that could be causing the problem, or is it just coincidence?
Thanks
Roger
Main system items:
MSI KT4 Ultra mobo
MSI Geforce MX440 (the cheaper one than the MSI Geforce4 MX 440 8X that I have)
Athlon Thunderbird XP2100
2 x Nanya 256Mb 133 DDR 2700
PSU-300w that came with the case, but don't know the details
IBM 80Gb 7200 Hard drive

The problem is related to some kind of behaviour that Windows 98 Second Edition has with some Motherboards.
To solve this, Microsoft has launched a complement that fixes this bug.
Please refer to this article and I suggest you to download and install that fix
The article url is:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp
I experienced the same failure with my old Motherboard but after installed that fix, everithing was in order.

I am running Window XP SP2. Just installed LR 1.3 a week ago and every time I shut down LR 1.3 the system blue screened (CRASH). System rebooted itself immediately, therefore unable to see the error messages. Never had this problem with 1.2. Seem to be some file handing problem.
Anybody run into this problem with LR 1.3. Any idea what is the problem is.

    Thanks Don,
I've checked the FAQ folder and searched for anything describing where to find the Prefrences file in windows Vista for Lightroom version 1.3.1.
This (the lines below) is as close as I came, and I don't have an AppData folder in Users/My User Name/AppsData
Rename the Lightroom Preferences.agprefs file (for example, to Lightroom Preferences .old) in the Users/[username]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences folder.
I really need to get this problem fixed since I'm a Commercial Photographer always being pressed for product. Could anyone tell me where to locate the Preferences file in Windows Vista for Lightroom 1.3.1?
    Thanks a bunch everyone,

How to remove black "blocked plug-in" window that opens with iPhoto. It covers iPhoto and everything under it. I've right and left clicked the black window, restarting the computer, shutting down the computer, but the window always appears when I open iPhoto and it will not move or go away. It stays on my screen (covering my desktop icons) even after I quit iPhoto. How can I get it off my screen?

Which version if iPhoto and MacOS X do you have?
Do you have any iPhoto plug-ins  installed?
    Open the folder /Library/Application Support/iPhoto/Plugins/
To navigate to that folder, open the folder "Library" directly on your Macintosh HD, then inside the Library folder go to Application Support, then iPhoto.  Is there anything installed?

To prevent application windows (not Finder windows) from reopening on restart, simply close all open applications, then use the Get Info dialog "Locked" checkbox to lock this plist (not the lockfile by the same name),
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.loginwindow.*.plist
where "~" is your home folder, and "*" is a string of characters (12 in my case). This plist is where the System stores "reopen windows" info, so the System can't change/delete it if it is locked. Works fine for me and others.

    Hello vina8sy,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iPhone will turn off after a sync but the iPad will not. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Windows 7 in Bootcamp shuts down when flash drive is removed.

Removing usb flash drive shuts down Windows 7.
Today, on my MacPro , I was wanting to  transfer some data files from Boot Camp on Windows 7 so i formatted the usb flash drive for Windows and copied the files onto the drive.
I then clicked  on Computer and found the flash drive and right clicked  to bring up the menu and then clicked on Eject.
I didn't see the flash drive light up like it usually does on the Mac side but after waiting for 30 secs. or so I pulled out the drive.
As soon as I pulled it out Windows 7 began to shut down.
I tried it one more time to see if it would repeat itself and it did the same thing again.
I don't have a clue why it should be doing this so I  would appreciate any suggestions you might have that will explain it.
    Thanks

I Just figured it out!  I Have a Mac Mini 2012 with 2  Kingston 128 GB SSDs.  I thought it was having 2 internal drives that was making problems... Had exact same issue as all of you.   First I would get a no NTFS partition error after I used Boot Camp Assistant to make a USB install stick for Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
My solution was simple, removing EVERYTHING connected to my mac mini, including my Wireless mouse and Keyboard. All I had connected was my Apple wired keyboard, the install USB drive, and my monitor. Having a Second internal SSD drive was not the issue.
I formatted the BootCamp partition, and POW! it actually worked.  The error that  setup couldnt install on this drive, and see error log didnt show up!  Try that! it might work!

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

  • MacMini Hangs When Shutting Down

    Hi all.
I've tried looking up the answers to this but I have a slightly different issue from others who had issues when shutting down.
This started a few months ago.  What happens is when I click to shut down the computer, everything starts closing out.  The top menu bar disappears but then nothing else happens.  I'm basically looking at my wallpaper with nothing on it but my dock will still be up.  When I look on my dock the only thing that appears to be active is the "Finder" folder.  When I click on it nothing happens, however, if I right click it says that the application is not responding and gives me the option to relaunch, but nothing happens.  So it seems like there's something going on with the "Finder" folder that is preventing it from shutting down.
For what it's worth, I did run "Verify Disk" from Disk Utilities that said everything came back okay.  I unplugged any external devices hooked up via USB like my USB hub to see if there was something going on there.
    I have a 2012 Mac Mini.
In the past, I have let it go all night to see if it would eventually shut down and it won't.  I have to force shut it down.  Ideally, I don't want to do this.  Has anyone else had this issue?
    Thanks!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Strange Beep When Shutting Down

Today, when shutting down Windows, I received a strange beep from my MSI Mega 865.  I checked the temp, and it's only 48C.  Any ideas on what would make it beep when it shuts down?
Note:  This noise came as soon as I chose to shut down, and prior to any shut down routines actually running, not towards the end of shutting down.
Might be hyper sensitivity on my part, but any strange noise from this Mega PC is highly disconcerting for me.

You guys are going to think I'm beep happy here  , but tonight, when emptying the trash bin, I got another strange beep.  The sound is very low, hard to hear, but it is there.
Would my HardDrive firing up / spinning cause some type of system beep?  Cause that sucker spun up pretty hard/fast when I emptied the recycle bin.

    Hi,
This might be a graphics-related or video card related issue when using Microsoft Flight Simulator X, I suggest to download and then install the latest drivers for your video card.
There are diffenences for different graphics card, you can refer to this for detail:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925722
A Directx is necessary for the Flight Simulator X, I suggest t ocheck whether this is correctly installed in this way:
Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.Type dxdiag in the search box, and then tap on click dxdiag.exe.
Click the “Display”, then you will see the Directx features, make sure that the Acceleration is available.
If the Directx is not found, try get this from the Windows update, more details you can refer to this:

  • Windows 10 will not shut down completely? Power light stays on(official july 29th upgrade)

I just upgraded to windows 10 from windows eight and I'm facing shutdown problems because when I asked the PC to shut down; the screen goes off but the power light stays on and basically windows 10 does not shut down completely whenever I have to turn on my PC again, I have to force the power button down until it completely Shuts down and start it back up again.
I tried several troubleshooting tactics wants & browsed YouTube videos and but nothing seems work and I've seen people on this forum complain about same thing and am hoping HP fixes the problem.

YES!!!!! A Solution that worked.  Spread the news.  It has to do with the Intel Virtualization Tehnology. Didn't know what that was until this issue came up in Windows 10. First, find out if this is your issue.   1. I installed the 'Intel Processor Identification Utility' directly from Intel.2. After installation, open the program and go to the 'CPU Technologies' tab.3. If it says 'YES' for Intel Virtualization Tehnology, proceed. Solution...(at least on my system) 1. The next thing you have to do is go into the BIOS.  If you have not done this before, proceed at your own risk.         You need to restart the computer and enter the BIOS (for me I hit F10 at the HP screen)2. Within the BIOS, there is an 'Advanced Options' section3. In this section there is a line for 'Intel Virtualization Tehnology' and it will say enabled or disabled.  My computer said disabled.4. If this is the case, change the option to 'ENABLED'; then SAVE and EXIT from the BIOS.   The Computer will restart and from that point on Shut Down, Sleep, etc. has worked.  WOW this was a frustrating issue. Almost went back to Windos 8.  I take no credit for this solution, I pieced it together from other posts on this issue.  Hope this helps.

  • When shutting down, FF does not save tabs or ask if I want to save them.

Several times recently, when shutting down, the small window asking if I want Firefox to save tabs does not appear, and the tabs are lost.

One of the changes in Firefox 4: '''''by default''''' Firefox 4 does not display the "Save Tabs and Exit" warning message when closing multiple tabs, but it can be turned back on by changing some preferences.
*<u>Saving tabs was not removed from Firefox 4</u>, but it works a bit differently.
**By default, Firefox 4 will not ask to save tabs, but instead it will always save your tabs on exit. You can restore them next time by choosing "Restore Previous Session" from the History menu, or pressing the restore button on Firefox's default home page.
**''<u>Note: This was a decision by the developers. On this forum, we are all '''uncompensated volunteers''' here to help other users. The developes/employees of Mozilla/Firefox rarely, if ever visit here.</u>''
To display the "Save Tabs and Exit" message when closing multiple tabs, you can do the following:
#Type '''''about:config''''' in the URL/Location/Address bar and press the Enter key
#Accept the warning message (promise to be careful)
    #The preferences page/list will open
    #Filter = '''''browser.tabs.warnOnClose'''''
#If its value is set to false, double-click on it (in the lower panel) to toggle its value to true
#Repeat steps 4 and 5 for these following 3 preferences also:
    #*'''''browser.warnOnQuit'''''
    #*'''''browser.warnOnRestart'''''

  • 890GXM-G65 on-board Audio white noise when shutting down ... Please Help

Just got this board on ebay. Runs great but when rebooting the following happens:
MSI 890GXM-G65 on-board Audio produces a second's worth of white noise (radio no-station-tuned static sound) when shutting down - about a second before the screen goes bank and the PC restarts
I don't mind the noise but is this normal or should I send the board back ?

I'm using the following hardware :
    Athlon II x 3 440 AM3 (unlocked 4 cores @ 3.6GHz)
    Thermaltake MaxOrb
    MSI 890GXM-G65
    2 x 2GB Kingston 1066 CAS 7 DDR3 KVR1066D3N7K2/4G
    MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5/OC
OCZ Fatal1ty 550W Modular (Dual Rails +12V@25A per rail)
    WD 250GB 7200rpm SATA II
    Thermaltake Gaming Cube VF6000BNS
    Windows 7 x64 Home Premium
    19" Sony Triniton CRT Monitor
All Windows Sounds are turned off except for Device Connect / Disconnect / Connect Failure. I have an Audigy 2 PCI card but I haven't tried it because the drivers always lock up the PC when I run MSI Afterbutner, eVGA Precision or almost any other hardware monitoring utility.
Since I flashed the BIOS to v1.B I feel I can't return it to the seller but I really like the board and it works well, except for this integrated audio issue. I won't return this board - it's a keeper.
Still, I'm hoping for a fix if possible.
