Windows 98 OS, Flash 9.0.277.0 consistently crashes or hangs on YouTube with Firefox 2.0.0.20

I had given up on getting Flash 9 to work on YouTube, but I thought I'd make this post to see if anyone has any ideas.  I have Windows 98 operating system -- so Flash 9 is as high as I can go.  Flash 9.0.277.0 -- the most recent version -- consistently crashes or hangs on sites with Flash content using Firefox 2.0.0.20 (the highest Firefox version I can have for my OS) or Opera 10.10.  (Every earlier Flash 9 version I tried also crashed.)  The site I really want Flash 9 to work on is YouTube, but EVERY time I  do an artist search and click on a link my computer hangs or crashes with an error message concerning NPSWF32.dll, the Flash plugin.  Is it a lost cause to get Flash 9 to work on YouTube?  I hope someone has an answer.  Thank you very much.

Hello, Pat.
You say, "It is also possible that this is mere  speculation."
Indeed, it is possible that it is  "mere speculation".
I said that I was basing my comments on poster #  3's comments.  What I tried to do was to rephrase it a little  to show my understanding of the factors contributing to a possible  (NS_type_browser)/YouTube/(FP_9_version) conflict that could lead to the  NPSWF32.dll error or a computer crash or hang.
To be more general,  "(NS_type_browser)/YouTube/(FP_9_version) conflict" should be replaced with  "(NS_type_browser)/(Internet_web_site)/(FP_9_version) conflict", since FP 9  versions newer than 9r_47 exhibit unpredictable behavior.  That  is, these FP 9 versions will crash on some sites (or videos), whereas on other  sites (or videos) these FP 9 versions will work fine.
I thought with your expertise,  that you could clear up any "mere speculation" or  misunderstanding that I might have.
But, evidently, this was not the case.
You say, "I would say, if FP8 on FF2 works for  you, why not just leave it at that?"
As you know -- or, at least, I hope you know --  different websites support different minimum Flash Player  versions.  That is, on a given website, FP 9 might work fine,  but FP 8 might not work at all -- and, in this case, you would  get a message saying you needed a later version of FP to watch the Flash  content.  (This message is stated differently on different sites, but it is  basically equivalent to what I've just said.)
why not just leave it at  that?
YouTube now supports both FP 8 and FP 9, but at  some point in the future I'm sure they will  discontinue support for FP 8.  If I didn't have a working FP 9, I'd be  SOL on YouTube !
As I explained, in the  present day, I can watch much,  much more Flash content while browsing the web with FP 9 with than with  FP 8.  Also, FP 9 gives a better picture than FP 8.
I'd guess the reason that you were not even aware  of this -- based on your question -- is that you are not limited by your OS and  hardware like I am.
I hope this answers your question, Pat.
Like I said, I'll give you a "helpful answer" -- 5  points -- just for responding to me here.
Thank you.

  • Had to disabled add ons but it seems to have caused YouTube to insist I upgrade Adobe Flash Player. Did so several times, rebooted and reinstalled Foxfire but still can't play any videos on YouTube with Firefox. Chrome works fine. Please fix.

Youtube on Firefox won't recognize Adobe Flash Player.

What is your current Flash Player version: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html ?

  • Firefox 5 is causing my Intel graphics driver (it is up to date) to crash - never had a problem with Firefox 2, 3, or 4.

Having repeated intel graphics accelerator driver crashes - screen goes black and it recovers - get little error message screen as what happened. Happens frequently. I have done driver scans and everything is up to date. Did not have this problem with firefox 4

This is my problem too. I saw a post about a computer crash above. I found if I wait (various periods of time) the computer restores and firefox stays broken. Although being impatient, I would reboot the computer anyway.
I HAVE SWITCHED TO CHROME until this problem is resolved. You can import all your bookmarks and passwords and live happily ever after. When and If this problem is resolved, I may switch back (been loyal for years and years).. if it takes too long, I'll probably just stay with chrome as my new browser.
I have also seen a similar screen to the "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH" that scared me, but it was a graphic driver crash warning (windows 7) nothing more. However I did pee myself a little.
For a while I thought my graphics card was overheating or something, but found the crashes coincided with firefox boot. That's when I discovered this thread. Thanks folks for posting.

  • Flash player 11.3.300.262 does not stream video with Firefox

Newest Flash Player update does not function with Firefox.

    Hey Chris,
I was able to duplicate this issue on my Windows 7 laptop as follows:
         1)  Completely uninstall FlashPlayer (using your tool) as well as Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Maintenance Service (used Windows 7 - uninstall from Control Panel).  Please note that I checked the box that said "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations" to ensure that Firefox was completely gone from my laptop.
         2)  I then went out to the Firefox website and downloaded the "Firefox Setup 13.0.1.exe" app to my laptop.  I ran this app to install Firefox.
         3)  I then went to the following website http://www.ishmael.org.uk/karaoke02.php as I know that this URL uses Flash Player (obviously you can go to any URL that uses Flash Player - I'm just letting you know which one I used).  I then clicked on the icon on this page to install Flash Player.
Once the install was completed, the URL stops responding and appears to be locked up (although it will occassionally hiccup and display portions of the page and then lock up again).  You will eventually get a pop-up notice from Firefox that has the header "Warning:  Unresponsive script" and says the following:
A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped responding.  You can stop the script now, or you can continue to to see of the script will complete.  Script:  chrome://browser/content/browser.js:6551
Selecting "Stop script" will get Firefox working until you hit another page that uses Flash Player.
To ensure that the above URL is not the culprit, I used one from your website http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html and had the same results.
    Hope this info helps!
    Jeff
NOTE:  As a reminder, I do not have RealPlayer installed on my laptop (and never have had it installed)

  • Names of downloaded files appear in Downloads Window only if that window is open during download. I run Firefox 4 on windows xp 32 bit sp3. I didn't have such problem with Firefox 3. Can somebody please help me?

When I download a file with firefox 4 Downloads Window opens but downloading file name doesn't appear there. If I keep Downloads Window open further downloads appear in it but if i close it and reopen it again it appears blank, all downloaded file names are disappeared. I tried everything, unchecked "Remember download history" box and checked it again, deleted downloads.sqlite file, even created new profile but nothing helped.

It is easy for me to explain things badly, and I can not see what you are actually doing, I will therfore try to list as steps to take.
Please confirm that you have used firefox safe mode and still see the problem, by doing the following:
    # open firefox - use any profile
    # use '''Firefoxbutton -> Help -> Restart with add-ons disabled'''
    # you should now see an options dialogue with a list of check box options,
#*you may get a confirmation option, if so accept it
#* do you now see the listing of check boxes, with a continue button at the bottom
#without making any changes, click the continue with safemode
    # firefox should now restart in safe-mode
Now try the downloading, whilst we know you are in safe mode.
    # once a download has completed, use the option to open the containing folder that you see in your download manager
    ## does that option work ok,
    ## does it open a folder with downloads in it, make a note of the folders path/location/name
    ## do you see the downloaded file you just downloaded
    ## if so regardless of what the downloads folder says you have found the downloads
    ## close firefox and the folders with the downloads
    ## are you now able to reopen the 'containing' folder and find the downloads <br />( use Windows Explorer, not clicking on firefox, - firefox is closed)
    ## close the folder again
    ## open firefox, this time no need to be in safe mode
    ## look again for the containing folder whose name you noted down, does it still contain the downloads
#'''IF''' you are getting problems now that you are in safe mode read the article about [[Unable to download or save files]]
    ## the article has several steps it suggests you try,
    ## please try all the steps in turn and report what happens with each step

  • ALL flash videos looks pixelated, win 7 or 8.1, ONLY with firefox

Latest firefox version, latest adobe flash player.. Had cleaned cache and preferences of both Firefox and Flash Player.. two different machines with different hardwares and SOs, no luck!
With Google Chrome all videos are ok. It's like the difference in this two images: http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/computer-chip-super-resolution-640x353.jpg
Firefox's WEB images are GREAT but all videos looks pixelated as the left picture.. had compared the same video with Firefox and Chrome opened side-by-side.. :\

Hardware acceleration ON of OFF didn't make any difference.. honestly I never saw anyone saying they see any difference switching it..
Of course with a higher resolution (720 or 1080p) there's less pixelation, but with other browsers there ain't such issue..

    Hello there.
If you're having a problem with a specific plugin, you need to contact its author for support. If you have problems with all your plugins, then it's a different matter. Is that the case?

  • The Windows 7 pop up screen at the bottom toolbar does not function with Firefox 4. Instead there are now tabs on top. The Windows 7 feature was handy because one could easily see which pages you're working on. How can I fix this?

One of the Windows 7 features is the pop up box icon at the bottom toolbar which displays which pages are open when scrolling over it. After installing Firefox 4 this function does not work anymore, instead it was replaced by Firefox tabs above.

I believe you are talking about taskbar previews. To enable them you need to change a hidden preference.
    # Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter
    # Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
    # Locate the preference '''browser.taskbar.previews.enable''' and double-click on it to change its value to '''true'''

  • Which fingerprint password managers work with firefox and windows 7?

I am running Windows 7 Home Basic on a Dell XPS laptop. I have recently switched to Firefox because Internet Explorer is making me crazy on a regular basis. It is not allowing some downloads and installs and I am tired of going backwards to find another IE that will work. Firefox seems to be doing the trick so far. I want to purchase a biometric fingerprint reader to manage my passwords, but most don't seem to work with Windows 7, and many of the ones that do will not work with Firefox. Has anyone run across the device I am looking for?

  • Firefox consistently crashes when loading Flash sites

For a couple of reasons I decided to go ahead and install OSS a few days ago.  On the first day, the install went smoothly and everything was working just as it should (I used the oss-linux-free PKGBUILD in AUR).  Yesterday and today, however, I've started to get a reoccurring problem that is, to put it lightly, driving me nuts.
Firefox (or Epiphany, though I prefer the former) consistently crashes when opening up any site that uses Flash or Java.  With the way the internet is going, this is a large chunk of websites—not being able to visit YouTube or the website for Enemy Territory: Quake wars, for instance, is driving me nuts.
Now, when I say "consistently" I don't mean each and every time.  I've been able to get these sites to load a number of times, but in the last two days Firefox has crashed in probably 2/3-3/4 of the time when loading any site that has a Flash element.  I've made sure that I have not wrongly assumed this has to do with my newly installed OSS by uninstalling, reinstalling the kernel and all ALSA packages, rebooting, and then surfing the web for a while to see if anything went wrong.  It didn't.
So my question is this: why is Firefox crashing so often in the two days since I've installed OSS?  What can be done to rectify this?
After some experimenting, it seems the problem is worst under the following conditions:
    - Having several tabs open, though not necessarily several tabs with Flash
    - Listening to music and THEN navigating to YouTube or something.
However, it's not specific to these circumstances.  In fact, just before I decided to make this post I opened Firefox, went to a site with Flash on it (one tab), and it immediately shut down.  I tried this three or four additional times and was met with the exact same results.
    Other info
    Firefox: Pre-compiled Mozilla i686 build, v. 2.0.0.11
OSS: OSS (GPL version) 4.0, build 1012
    Operating System: Arch Linux 2.6.23-ARCH
    I've also posted this here.

I have the same problem. I've never been able to identify when it started. Once firefox crashes, mpd, if it was playing, becomes unresponsive. The only way to get a flash site working again is to reboot my computer.
I uninstalled flash: I'm not going to put up with that kind of behaviour. Now I watch youtube videos on other people's computers --you know how they say "You've GOT to see this movie!". And if I really need to see that one specific video, there's youtube-dl.
Unfortunately gnash doesn't work on youtube for me.

  • TS1717 iTunes 11.3.0.54 consistently crashes on Windows 7

iTunes 11.3.0.54 consistently crashes on my Windows 7 laptop, always when it tries to do something that depends on a connection with Apple (such as connecting to the Store, or Match). When I start iTunes in safe mode, everything works fine, including Store and Match. This article instructs me to remove all plugins, but it turns out that I don't have any (and yes, I do see hidden files). How can I fix this? Can I always start iTunes in safe mode, for example with a command line parameter?

    Hello MauritsH
Have you tried uninstalling iTunes and its related software and then installing the latest version for your issue? Check out the steps below to get that going for you.

  • Firefox 7 consistantly crashes with flash content

This is quite frustrating. Ever since the release of FF6 the performance of Firefox with Flash related content literally sucks! The plugin container is ALWAYS crashing consistently.
It seems that in Mozilla race to compete with Google Chrome in their rapid releases has resulted in rapid blunders. If better testing was in place this crap would not be happening. Mozilla needs to slow their roll in all honesty of people that have been long time Firefox users are going to move to Google Chrome since it is not plagued with issues that are getting all kinds of loyal Firefox fans pissed off over something so simple as flash.
I have had more problems with crashing since Firefox 5 has come out. Obviously the proper testing has not been done by Mozilla. In the 3. series i maybe crashed once a year, now is daily! WAKE UP MOZILLA!
Before I go any further i have read numerous post in here with people have the same problem. I have also done some testing on my own from what Mozilla suggests, in which NONE of their solutions corrects this issue. My solution however, which is not a solution but more a work a round solves totally any plugin-container.exe crashing. It was simply to roll back to Firefox 4.01. I updated to the newest flash player via their site.
I have been crash free for days now! THIS IS NOT AN ADOBE FLASH ISSUE. If it were then i would have crashed in 4.01 as well. For those concerned with the update nag, simply go to options->advanced-> and the tick boxes. that will prevent the nag
I thought that i could re-install Firefox 7 and simply replace the plugin-container.exe from 4.01, however that did not work. It resulted in a complete lock up of Firefox 7.01, and was honestly hoping that it would be that straight forward.
I read some peoples success with the 8b3. So, I tried that, and didn't solve my problem. I crashed within 24 hours again on flash related content. ( the crash ids are for the 8b3 i listed ).
Maybe someone needs to take the plugin container, and associated components in 4.01 and incorporate it in a new release, or revert back to that engine all together so that we can have a nice web experience without all the crashes.
You can get Firefox 4.01 here:
    ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/4.0.1/
edit: replaced random unofficial download site link.

I have found the bug thread, and have posted several posts with information and some examples of sites that provide positive crashes.
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=561019
From reading the posts, it looks as if Mozilla has moved this up a bit in priority according to reading into a post from one of the mozilla's team members since I have provided information concerning the crashes.
That particular bug ( Bug 561019 - Plugin waveOutOpen hangs ) is the TOP crasher of plugins:
    https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/topcrasher/byversion/Firefox/7.0.1/7/plugin
As far as reporting bug/hangs. The end user has to press the " submit crash report " link to submit it. If they do not it will sit there until you go into about:crashes
For hangs that DO NOT produce a crash you once again have to go into about:crashes and click on all the reports that DO NOT have a " bp " in front of them to get them to actually submit. They will post in about 3 minutes.
So for the "400 million" said users and " hard facts tend to suggest that most users do not crash " is unreliable to state since it is TOTALLY up to the end user to submit the report providing they know how. I know from working in a professional environment 99.9% of users do not submit error reports of any kind when something crashes the OS or any program. Even with the 9 members of my team they always click "do not send" except for myself.
" Get rid of plugin container " is a non option since you run the risk of features not working as i have found when you do that.
It does seem like a Firefox issue for several reasons: latest version of flash with Firefox v4.01 works flawlessly, and Chrome and IE do not have this issue with flash.

  • Flash 11.5.502.135 Crashes incessantly Windows 7 64 bit - all browsers

Afer anything from a second to a few minutes my system just shuts down when playing a flash movie - black screen and no power - with no error logs that I can see in the event viewer. This occurs on 2 seperate laptope I own. One a lenovo thinkpad and another a gateway.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled, deleted various folders, set the protected mode to 0 in the config file, removed a registry key - all according to various tips in these forums - nothing works!
I've tried using chrome, firefox and firefox. It just started doing this out of the blue after a flash update a while ago.
Your help is desperately needed as I really need to watch some flash movies as part of my work.
    any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ben

Most of the hard crash like your case happen with incompatibility with low level device drivers for graphic or audio card. If your machines are relatively new one after purchasing, please try to update all system software and device drivers. When I purchase my laptop (lenovo), Windows 7 64bits, it bothered me by crashing with Flash contents for couple weeks but it dissappered after while. I couldn't find its cause but suspected that audio driver did something wrong with Flash Player in low level.
