Windows activation after Downgrade win 8 pro - win 7 pro

Hello, me again, (you guys have been great thank you very much)  let me see if I understand this correctly (been reading Google) Lenovo does not put a COA sticker on the x230 for windows 8 pro? It is all automated?
I just loaded up windows 7, looked around the laptop, took the battery off and could not find a product key. Great...Probably should have looked this up beforehand. On top of that I cannot get the phone activation option to even come up on this thing.
Any suggestions at all for this situation: x230 had a defective hard drive, lenovo sent a new hard drive, and 4 recovery cds FOR A LAPTOP WITH NO CD DRIVE. I cannot stand windows 8 so I loaded windows 7 using a usb stick. The very last thing I need to do is activate windows, I apparently do not have a key for windows 8 to call microsoft with, and even if I did, I cannot find the microsoft activation number on this computer.
Thanks again people, would not have gotten this far without you...

You are supposed to have downgrade rights if your machine was sold with win8 PRO.  If you install from Lenovo disks, it will not ask for a key.  Unfortunately, you are probably going to need to get access to a USB DVD drive.  They can be gotten for under $20 on eBay, or you can try to borrow one.

  • Unable to set default boot as Windows XP after uninstalling Win 7

    Installed Win7 on a diff partition(not primary) to enable dual boot ...during reboot process of installation, got error as 0X0000005c . after uninstallation of win7 & formating the partition, machine is still trying to boot to windows 7 as default OS . Have to manually navigate to windows xp to boot .. Plse let me know as to how to set windows xp as default os to load..

    I think i need to remove default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    but not sure, since nothing here says windows7...this the same as startup & recovery under system properties...
    You are right being not sure :).
    Do not touch the boot.ini file and do not play with Msconfig in XP!
    The problem arose because Win7 replaced the XP boot manager (ntldr)
    with its own (bootmgr). And uninstallation of Win7 and formatting Win7 partition
    has not restored the boot manager of XP. Or, rather, ntldr remains intact on XP
    partition, but the boot sector continues to launch bootmgr instead of ntldr
    during the boot.
    You have to choices now.
    1) The first one is to restore XP's bootsector, which will launch ntldr
    while booting (instead of bootmgr). This can be done by running the command
    bootsect.exe /NT52 C:
    (supposing that boot partition is C:. One can as well to use "ALL" instead of C:
    if You are not sure which of partitions is boot). The program bootsect.exe
    can be started from the folder "boot" of the Win7 installation DVD.
    2) You can as an alternative to download, install and start
    the program EasyBCD. Just press the button "Add/Remove entries",
    click on XP entry in the list of boot menu options and press the red button "Delete".
    This method will keep the boot manager of Win7 to boot XP, but will delete
    the non-existent for now Win7 menu entry.

  • Help Needed: Returning Back to Windows 8 after downgrading to Windows 7

    Hi guys, im just new here.
    I have a MSI GE40 gaming laptop which I bought 2 months back.
    Within those 2 months of usage, I always encounter my laptop to be very slow in shutting down. It always take, maybe up to 10 minutes to fully shut down. The screen goes black but the power button stays on orange color, & as I said, it takes a long time  for the power button to be completely unlit. But for start up, its blazing fast.
    Thinking that windows 8 itself is the culprit of super slow shutting down, I searched the net on how to downgrade to windows 7.
    Of course I did make a back up first on a 16gb usb flash drive using the pre-installed recovery software from MSI which was completed successfully.
    Then I made some tweaks on the bios (ie select legacy & disable secure boot) & boot using windows 7 installation DVD, deleted all partitions (since the notebook comes with GPT partition) to be able to install windows 7. I installed all the drivers which I downloaded from MSI website specific to my notebook.
    But the problem is not solved, it is still very slow in shutting down, & now even boot up becomes very slow too.
    So I downloaded & execute the firmware & bios for windows 7 from msi website (again, specific to my model). But still the same, the notebook is still very slow both in shutting down & start up.
    So I decided to go back again to windows 8, I tried to boot from the flash drive (I adjusted from the bios & make the flash drive to be the first priority) but it did not boot from it. I tried F11 on start up & selected to boot from usb flash drive but again, to no avail.
    So the last one I did was downloaded windows 8, make a bootable flash drive out of it, boot from it and luckily, I succeed - I have now again a windows 8 msi ge40 laptop.
    But I wanted my laptop to be reinstated to factory setting, i.e, all preinstalled softwares are there, the bios is default for windows 8. So I tried to update the bios to the one for windows 8 again (since I downgraded the bios to the one for windows 7 when I downgraded the OS to windows 7). But I could not update the bios, the laptop is not booting from usb flash drive containing the bios.
    I tried also to recover using F3 on start up but the system does not recognize the flash drive (with system back up). I tried also on PC settings but to no avail.
    Now guys, I need your help.
    How can I return back my laptop to default factory settings?
    Thank you.
    (sorry for my not so good English)

    Hello:
    I think it's not only about the OS version, you need to return this back to your shop to repair with the slow shot down issue, because the OS should be shot down in 30 seconds, far from your GE40 times.

  • Snipping Tool stopping working after installing Office 2013 Pro (32 bit) on Win 7 Pro 64bit - help?

    Have been looking at many forums to fix this:
    ran SFC - no errors
    rebooted multiple times
    all Windows Updates are current
    don't want to disable antivirus, as some have suggested
    Uploaded a registry fix, which several have suggested - no soap
    Note:
    all other features of this PC work great - zero issues.
    the issue starting right after installing Office 2013 Pro - 32bit.  It runs fine.
    "Paint" runs fine.  "Print Screen" works fine - image goes to clipboard, and I can paste anywhere.
    get the standard message everyone posts in forums:
    "The Snipping Tool is not working on your computer right now. Restart your computer, and then try again. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."
    Have tried other free third-party tools, and they are cumbersome, and I love the MS Snipping Tool.
    Advice?  Tips?

  • Windows 8.1 downgrade to windows 7 pro recovery media with Satellite S50-BBT2N22

    I have a few questions about my recovery media.
    1. My new Satellite S50-BBT2N22 was ordered with Windows 8.1 downgrade-able to Win 7 pro. Should I build my recovery media before or after I downgrade to win 7 pro?
    2. My new Satellite S50-BBT2N22 does not have a DVD drive. How will I save my recovery media?
    Regards
    Dennis

    1. Before.  Your Recovery partition will remain Windows 8.1. After downgrading to Windows 7 and beginning operations, you should make frequent HDD copies to an external drive anyway.
    2. Use a Flash Drive in a USB port.  See your User's Guide starting on page 46 for complete instructions
    for making Recovery Media and Recovering the HDD.

  • Windows 9x support in WINE appears to be broken.

    Previously I was running OrCAD 10.5 suite flawlessly under Wine in my 64 Arch Install. To make one of the programs included in the suite work (layout.exe) I had to configure it to run as Windows 98, but that's all I needed to do to get the suite running.
    In a recen system upgrade, it stopped working. All the programs in the suite excepting layout.exe work, but when I launch layout.exe, it eats 100% CPU, but doesn't start, and I get the following error on the terminal window:
    WINEPREFIX=$OPATH wine layout.exe
    modify_ldt: Invalid argument
    modify_ldt: Invalid argument
    modify_ldt: Invalid argument
    modify_ldt: Invalid argument
    modify_ldt: Invalid argument
    After googling a bit, I found that it looks like there is a problem with 16 bit calls on latest kernel causing win16 programs to fail. I don't know if layout.exe is win16, but it might be. But as I only was experiencing the problem when Windows 9x mode was enabled (using winecfg), I decided to create a clean winebottle and do a simple test:
    First create the clean winebottle:
    $ WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/home/doragasu/wine/test wineboot
    And then run built-in commands that I suppose are 32-bit (is there a way I can know for sure?):
    $ WINEPREFIX=/home/doragasu/wine/test winecfg
    $ WINEPREFIX=/home/doragasu/wine/test wineconsole
    Both winecfg, wineconsole and others run as expected. Next step is running again winecfg to configure this winebottle to behave as Windows 98. Once this is done, I cannot start anything, neither winecft nor wineconsole work anymore, 100% cpu is taken by wine, and the "modify_ldt: Invalid argument" is again displayed on the terminal window. So it looks like not only win16 applications are broken, everything breaks if you set Windows 98 emulation...
    Someone pointed out that there was an error on the wine arch package that was solved later, but I have not heard anything about it, and my system is upgraded as of today. Can anyone confirm this problem? Is it only kernel related? Is there a workaround? (e.g. an easy way to downgrade the kernel until this is hopefully fixed).

    Unfortunately I'm not sure it broke in the last upgrade, I didn't use layout.exe at least for a month. Having a look to the log:

    EDIT: Tried downgrading wine yo version 1.7.14-1 and it doesn't work. Maybe I'll have to downgrade the kernel, and I don't know if it could have any side-effects.

    Windows 7 64-bit. Intel Xeon 2, RAM 12 MB. Mxo2

    Hi,
    Thanks for posting that screenshot. It appears that you have opened your Sequence Settings for a DV-NTSC sequence and have made a circle around the "Edit Settings" button.
    Since you chose to create a DV sequence, you cannot change those settings.
    Do you have DV NTSC clips? If so, these are the correct settings.
    If you do not have DV NTSC clips, do not be concerned. Just create the sequence.
    Once you drag a non-DV clip into the DV sequence, it's OK.
    You have the option of changing the Sequence Settings to match those of your clip in a new dialog box.
    Click "Change Sequence Settings" in the dialog box.
    I hope that helps.
    Thanks,

    Hi Buterem,
    I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. You may find the following article helpful:

  • [SOLVED] Multiple versions of Wine / downgrade Wine

    Hi All
    I need to be able to run Wine 1.5 in order to use GoToMyPC which unfortunately doesn't work with Wine 1.7. I guess the ideal would be to have Wine 1.7 alongside 1.5 and be able to switch between them. I've had real difficulty in finding any information on how to do this and when I tried to compile Wine 1.5 I had errors which I couldn't resolve.
    So, is it possible to downgrade Wine to 1.5? If so, is there any information around someone could point me to which explains how to do it? It is really annoying me that I have to connect to work via Windows just because of a Wine version! GoToMyPC always worked in Ubuntu for example until the recent "upgrade". I came back to Arch, hadn't realised how much I loved this distro' actually, only to find the same issue!
    Any suggestions, help, pointers etc. are much appreciated.
    Richard

    RichAustin wrote:To be honest I don't really understand how the prefix is supposed to work. If I run the above command to set the prefix and then "wine --version" I still get wine 1.7. It seems most likely to me that I'm not using the prefix correctly to set the version of wine. The documentation on it is as clear as mud which doesn't really help.
    That is because wine uses certain other variables to point to a specific wine version (binaries and libraries). I wrote a script a very long time ago to link binaries downloaded by PoL to /usr/bin/wine-_version_. Since then some things may have changed. To use a different wine version in a specific prefix you would need to set at least those variables:
    WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/Windows7"
    WINESERVER="$HOME/.PlayOnLinux/wine/linux-x86/1.7.13/bin/wineserver"
    WINELOADER="$HOME/.PlayOnLinux/wine/linux-x86/1.7.13/bin/wine"
    WINEDLLPATH="$HOME/.PlayOnLinux/wine/linux-x86/1.7.13/lib/wine"
    This is done by PoL however, so there is no need to do it manually. Reread what other suggested. PoL is the simplest way for that.
    Edit: Clarification.

  • TS3212 Ipod will not update/sync with new songs I have purchased after downloading win 8.1.  Help?

    I have a 160GB ipod, i think it is a classic.  After uploading WIN  8.1 on my computer I can no longer sync my ipod to my itunes account.  From the looks of things online I am not the only person with this problem.
    Any fixes?  I have about 40 songs waiting for me.
    Second question.... is there a way to download the music from an ipad to an ipod?  I ordered a cable with double IPOD ends...will that do it for a sync?
    Nancy Rolljns

    I have the same problem and it looks like MANY people have this problem. My iPod Classic 160GB will sync with various computers runing Windows 7 or less, but not my Windows 8.1 notebook. It freezes both the iPod and iTunes when trying to copy anything to the iPod. I can erase songs on the iPod, but not copy to it. On another Windows 7 computer it all works perfectly. I have even restore and re-formatted the iPod in question multiple times. Windows 8.1 thinks there is a problem whenever I connect it and wants to scan for errors. It never finds any. No such problems on oother computers. The Apple drivers seem to have a problem on Windows 8.1. Even another iPod copy program has problems with this iPod on the Windows 8.1 computer, but not on any others. I have tried all the different USB ports, external USB hubs, etc. Windows 8.1 does not like the iPod Classic 160GB model.

  • After installing win 8.1 and the latest itunes version iTunes does no longer detect my iPhone.

    After installing win 8.1 and the latest itunes version iTunes does no longer detect my iPhone. On my iPhone I now suddenly get the question: Do you trust this computer (after connecting to the usb port)

    Try this!
    I had the same problem as you an it worked for me.
