Windows and iTunes do not recognize iPod

Help! I have read everything in this forum and have not found the solution yet. I have the 30gb ipod video and I've had it for almost a month now and it doesnt work. I've tried the 5r's.. didnt do anything.. when i connect it to my laptop, it says its charging.. it also tells me that it would work better with a 2.0 usb, but according to the specs, it should still work with the 1.1 usb. Also, when i look at it in the device manager, it says "Location: Location 0 (iPod)" and "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver." but when i try to reinstall them from the cd, it says they're not there.. i'm not the only one having this problem.. from all the posts.. is it possible its the cable? I dont have another computer to try it on.. HELP!

Frustrated Mom,
I am having the exact same issue. It all worked fine
yesterday (the first day I used it) and now today
there is no recognition on either
computers...anywhere. I called the Apple S.O.S. line
and they took me through all of the possible fixes.
Nothing worked. In the end, they suggested that the
iPod is faulty and I should send it in to have it
repaired. I just got it yesterday so I will be
calling MacMall back for an exchange, otherwise I
just paid full price for a refurbished item. Not
cool.
Good Luck,
Doug
I had similar problems with my office Dell (Windows XP). My 60GB Video iPod works fine at home with my ibook, but when I first used with iTunes on this Dell I could only get it to intermitently recognize the ipod the first day. The next day the PC would recognize it was in the USB in that it showed up in the lower bar of devices to remove, and it would run the ipod service program and then start itunes (still does this) but it would not show up in itunes any longer or as a drive any longer in Mycomputer. On the other hand in an identical Dell in office nex to mine I was able to use it fine the last 3 days when it no longer worked on my office Dell.
After some experimentation the fact that the iPod service runs when I put my iPod into the USB port and then runs iTunes shows the PC sees it. And I can eject it via the device eject icon on bar at screen bottom. I determined the reason the Dell in other office sees it while the one in my office no longer sees it in iTunes is likely due to the fact that I do not have administrative access to my PC and iTunes is not installed as my default application. The Dell next door has iTunes installed as default application for music and thus I have no problems.
It shows my iPod is ok but the PCs (not my ibook) vary in response due to minor differences (such as not being default application for music in my case --at least that appears to be cause which I will test later when I get my itunes set as default application). You may want to look at issues with iTunes rather than the iPod being faulty?

  • My ipod classic turns on with apple logo then shuts off about 30 seconds later, when plugged in my windows and itunes will not recognize it.

earlier my itunes told me that my files were corrupted and I needed to restore, so I did.  In the middle of the restore I lost internet connection. Now my computer and Itunes will not recognize my Ipod and if it is not plugged in when I turn the Ipod on it only shows the apple logo then shuts off after 30 seconds.  If it is plugged in it will charge, but Itunes and Windows will not recognize it.  I have tried the menu + select shutoff multiple times with no change.  All it will say while it is charging is do not disconnect.

The clicking sound is your iPod Hardisk, trying to retract and find the boot sector unsuccesfully.
Hopefully, you can do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as in this great post by tt2., it wont fix your problem, but let you know, how dire is your Hardisk health.
So only as a last resort, one way, to get the stuck Hardisk head free, is to bang the iPod on a rubber mouse pad, when you reset it, but do it at your own risk, some very lucky guys got it working again for the next 14 months, like myself.

  • Brand new Ipod touch bought yesterday - Screen is frozen with an itunes emblem and cable. Unable to refresh or restore ipod. Computer and itunes does not recognize ipod.

This is first Ipod for me  - I have had less than one day. Screen is frozen with itunes emblem and cable. Unable to refresh/restore or do anything with ipod. I turn off/on and get the same frozen screen. My computer does not recognize ipod. Itunes does not recognize ipod so I cannot restore.... Should I take this ipod back and get a new one? Is this normal?

Before you can use the iPod you have to activate it by connecting it to a computer with iTunes.  Try the following to get your computer to see the iPod so you can activate the iPod.

  • Windows and iTunes does not recognize

    yada, yada...
I tried the Rs, but my new computer and iTunes does not recognize my shuffle. Can someone give me basic steps to correct this? Shuffle was previously 'synched' with another iTunes library and I don't want to erase my currently uploaded music. Help please!

I don't know if this is the same problem, but I cannot get my I-pod Nano to sync or have I-tunes recognize it. It is a connector problem, and this is my second Nano to do it within nine months. Apple wants $32 to send it in to be repaired once again. I am irritated beyond belief. I took my Nano in to an IMAC store and they confirmed that it was a connector problem. They could not send it off nor repair or replace it though. So I've had two Nano's since Christmas have this problem.
I would suggest that you try another device (shuffle) on your computer to ensure that it's not your computer (our other I-pods worked on the computer) and/or take it in to an IMAC store where they will see if it connects to one of their computers.
Right now I think Apple products are basically crap...

  • Windows nor iTunes does not recognize iPod anymore

    I have a major problem that I can't comprehend.
OK, so my hard drive did some weird stuff on me and I had to repair it. Afterward, a whole bunch of things got messed up so I had to repair my Windows XP installation.
And now, when I connect the iPod, it doesn't show up in either Explorer or iTunes.
However, when I go to the Device Manager, I see that it knows it is connected. Also, when I go into Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management (Local), I can see the iPod. However, whenever I try to mount it under whatever drive letter, it does so, but I still cannot see it in explorer. Then if I restart it seems like it didn't do anything. Oddly enough, when I do assign it a drive letter, it does show itself in iTunes and starts syncing. However, of course it doesn't show in Explorer and it disappears again the next time I startup the computer.
I've tried everything from uninstalling/re-installing iTunes (down to the program files folder and Temp folder) to pretty much everything else in the Knowledge base.
I'm just stuck here. And I've just totally overhauled my computer a few months ago and do not want to do that again unless I ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT A DOUBT have to.
Thanks ahead of time for any help.
iPod 5th Gen (30GB)   Windows XP

I am having a similar problem myself.
Since I don't use system restore on my computer I am wondering if anyone has tried restoring their computer to an earlier date when everything was working?
Like I said in another post I have this funny feeling that this has been caused by a Windows crit update. My reasoning is because I have read about 20 similar posts with people ranging from bought it a few days ago to bought it a year ago or so. So the age of the Ipod varies and I don't think everyone of them had Itunes 7 installed yet. But like many things I could be wrong.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

After updating iTunes this week Windows 8 recognizes the iPod but does not offer an option to open with iTunes. iTunes does not recognize iPod Touch. Have followed all the steps but without success. Is there a solution with iTunes?

I followed all the instructions on the suggested page. Many files in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\ and C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\ could not be deleted. Message said ""Cannot delete files: It is being used by another person or program"' but could not find iPodService.exe in task manager (also, the "Cannont delete ... " did not mention iPodService.exe).
Deleted all that I could. Reinstalled iTunes. Still same result. iTunes and computer both recognize my old iPod. Only the computer recognizes iPod Touch.
