Windows and Mac on external bootable drive

Hi,
I am looking for a way to have two partitions on an external drive, one being a bootable Mac partition, the other a bootable windows 7 partition. The two partitions will be used on two separate computers (I have a Mac that I will use the Mac partition with and I have a pc that I will use the windows partition with). I do not need to be able to access the windows partition from the Mac, or the Mac partition from the windows machine.
Is this setup possible? I have looked on the Internet but am getting conflicting theories. Will it work if I format the first partition is hfs+ and install Mac on that, then format the second as ntfs and install windows 7 on that? What partition scheme would I have to use?
Cheers.

Let me see if I read things right...
You have an external dirve with a MacOS partition and a Windows 7 Partition (most likely a drive that used to be in a Mac and had BootCamp on it).  You want to copy the Mac Partition onto a Mac, and copy the Windows Partition onto a PC and use the two separately.  Is this right?
If so, the Mac side is fairly easy,  assuming that the version of MacOS installed on that external drive is as new as (or newer) that the version shipped with the Mac you are trying to copy it to.  I personally prefer SuperDuper for cloning my Mac volumes, but a number of other people use Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC).  Both tools work great for cloning one MacOS partition to another.  I use this to keep a regular backup of my MacOS volume, in case of a disaster.
The Windows side isn't quite as easy, but it is generally possible.  If you try to use the Windows Backup utility to make a partition backup of your Windows instance on the external drive, it will work, but it will also try to do a sector copy of the MacOS partition as well, but it doesn't do that so well.  For Windows systems, I tend to use a third party tool for my backup images.  It's called Acronis True Image.  If you connect the external drive to your PC, and run Acronis True Image, it will let you create a backup clone image of the Windows 7 partition on the external drive.  Since the drive will be GPT (for MacOS) and not MBR, you may need to spring for the Plus Pack for True Image to be able to backup the volume on the external drive.  I would suggest the Plus Pack anyway, because I believe it also has the support to restore the backup image to different hardware.
When you install Windows, it stires information about the hardware in your system, and the drivers it need to load to properly boot.  If you significantly change the hardware, Windows won't boot, and will crash loading drivers leavign you unable to boot the Windows instance.  I know that Windows XP had an installation option which was called a "repair install" which would boot from the install CD and wipe the hardware section of the registry clean, and then re-run the hardware detection phase of the install, but it would not touch the user installed software (unless it hooked into the hardware layers).  I'm sure that similar exists in Windows 7, but I haven't had to use it myself, so I'm not sure how you would use it.  I had mentioned the Plus Pack for Acronis True Image, because it assists you with this component.
In the end, you can do what I think you are trying to do, but the Windows side isn't near as easy to do as the MacOS side. I would suggest that you consider starting the PC with a clean install of Windows 7, and user the migration tools, or just install the apps and copy the data manually...

  • How to share files between pc and mac via external hard drive

how can i share my files(mp3,mp4,documents) from my harddisk with mac. i am a new mac user and i have a harddisk of NTFS format(as i was a pc user).I learned that mac supports FAT32 format and therefore i can't write data on my external hard drive.
but, reading a section of OSX yosemite(under compatibility) it is said that now we can easily share files between pc and mac.
So please suggest me easier way that how can i share files between macs and pc as my friends uses pc and in future i really want to share my data with them without any hustle and i dont wanna loose my data in future

You can format the HDD to a common one like ExFAT or Fat32 but a reformat will delete all data off of the HDD.
Your other option is to use a third party software such as Paragon or Tuxera that will allow you to write to a NFTS formatted HDD.

  • Use external drive for windows and mac

    Hello,
I just bought a external 320Gb Western Digital Drive. I would like to use
the drive for windows and mac.I will not like to make partation on the drive
to use it on both operating systems. Is there any formating system with which i can use in both operating systems? I would like to use time machine feature on that drive also.
    Thanx.

If you want to use a disk for both PC/Mac file storage and Time Machine, you will have to create two partitions. Partitioning is sort of like creating multiple virtual disks on the same physical disk. One partition should be formatted for PC (which the Mac can also use) and the other should be formatted for HFS+ (Mac only) which is what Time Machine requires. The Disk Utility application makes partitioning and formatting very easy.

  • Want to use a Lacie External Hard Disk with Windows and Mac? Can I?...

Hi, I've just purchased a Lacie Extreme D2 external hard disk, I'm looking to use it to move film clips from my Mac G5 to my Sony Vaio laptop. I'll connect the Mac using Firewire 1 and the PC using USB 1.
I understand there is an issue with setting the compaitibility of the hard disk to either Mac or Windows format but I'm wondering if I can set it to both, so it's possible to transfer these files? The hard disk is Windows and Mac compatible but does it have to be partitioned a certain way?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alex

Format the drive as FAT or use the Mac format (HFS Extended) and install MacDrive on the PC.

Yes you can. OS X version 10.6.6 and later can read/write exFAT. Windows XP SP3 and later can read/write exFAT. As posted by Radiation Mac, you can do it from Windows or from OS X.
However, I've noticed Windows to be somewhat picky about drives formatted on a Mac. So, if Windows can't read it, try formatting it on the Windows machine, and see how it works on the Mac.

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • Portable Hard drive formating for use with windows and mac operating system

Just bought a verbatim sure fire 500g 800 firewire portable hard drive for my new macbook pro. I have not did bootcamp yet because I am deciding on wether to use Vista or the new windows 7 that will be coming out soon. The drive is already formated HFS+, how do I format the drive so I can write both windows and mac files to it. Help!!!

how do I format the drive so I can write both windows and mac files to it.
Either format it to MS-DOS from the DIsk Utility, or install a tool such as MacDrive into Windows and keep the drive in its current format, or install the NTFS-3G driver into Mac OS X and format the drive to NTFS in Windows.

  • Is it OK to use USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive?

Is it OK to use a USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive? I was told by Sweetwater tech support to use Firewire, but both the FW400 and FW800 connections crash my audio interface software mixer (Presonus' "Universal Control" software).
Both Firewire connections also create a 10 second hang for each Command-Save that I do.
USB 2.0 for the external drive seems to be working so far, but is there some reason I should be wary of using this as my go-to project drive? In other words, I am imagining that there was probably some definite reason that the tech support guy mentioned not to use it. But maybe not. It's a brand new Glyph. In any event, it's nice to have the 10 second hang eliminated, and I was just looking for some advice, since digging into the Presonus software issue could take some time.

If you have a mac pro, why not stick the external HDD inside via one of your many SATA cables & have it run 9 times faster than your USB?
Or stick a HDD CADDY in your mac pro, so you can slot in a full sized 3TB HDD for recording, and when you are done, pull it out & slip it in an external enclosure if you need to take it places?

  • I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity?

I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity? I purchased a faster drive initially, but has 200 GB capacity. I am running out of room and would like to upgrade for more space if possible.
    Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You don't need to partition your drive to run Fusion, only if you want to run Bootcamp.
If you have space on your Windows partition, I would suggest you backup your Windows partition, and then, delete the partition using Disk Utility.
You can now restore your virtual machine to a single volume or repartition if you prefer.
I would consider upgrading to a unibody MBP (used, refurbished will do) just to be able to access the HD. Opening the pre-unibody MBP is not something you would want to do.

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege
