Windows and Mac Pro w/ Apple RAID card

It happened i have a need to run Windows natively on Mac Pro with Apple RAID card installed.
I know there is no Windows driver for that card, but i had a hope to bypass RAID card via connecting of internal SATA drive directly to iPass(SSF-8087) connector of Mac Pro's motherboard and using of that drive for Windows.
So, i've connected SATA drive this way and it works fine with OS X.
But i can't even try it with Windows because Mac Pro doesn't boot up from Windows installation CD if Apple RAID card installed
Empty black text console is all that i've got after selecting of Windows installation CD in EFI boot menu.
I need a suggestion how to bypass my problem, or generally speaking, how to install Windows onto Mac Pro with Apple RAID card.

I've tried that.
Installation and booting of WinXP passed OK if RAID card removed.
But i've got black screen again trying to boot WinXP after RAID card re-installed.

  • Mac Pro with Apple Raid Card - 1 drive OSX (JBOD) + 1 drive Vista?

Can anyone walk me through what I'd need to do to set up an early 2008 model Mac Pro with the Apple Raid Card pre-installed and 2 500 gig drives, so that I can have OSX on the first drive and Vista on the second?
I know it defeats the purpose of the raid card, but...
What I've done so far is:
    1. Removed drive #2
    2. Install and using Raid Utility, add the first drive as a JBOD set/volume
    3. After install, shut down the machine
    4. Re-add drive #2
    5. Restart
    6. Use disk utility to add drive #2
I tried to use bootcamp, but it only wants to put windows on the first drive - which won't work because it is RAID.

Run Vista off an ATA interface in the 2nd optical drive. There is an SATA 2 ATA adapter.
I think you can boot Vista off some RAID controllers, check out Highpoint RocketRAIDs. Should be able to configure the RR.
Boot Vista off USB is a stretch.

  • 2010 Mac Pro with Apple RAID card - "Drive carrier 00:03 removed"

I've got a 2010 Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card and 4 internal identical Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB drives inside.
I've never had a problem with the RAID card (either battery or in operation) except for one thing:
Almost every time I shut the machine down (which I try to do as rarely as possible), it keeps losing Drive 3, the spare.
(See RAID Utility event log snippet below.)
[I wish I could understand why this Apple RAID card keeps losing the spare across power-cycles/reboots, but I digress.]
So I just adopted it as the spare and it spawns the rebuild and many hours later, everything's fine again.
... until the last time I rebooted (Jan. 2nd).
After the usual "I lost the spare" message upon login, it began the rebuild.
But this time, about 11 1/2 hours later the rebuild stopped and RAID Utility reported "Drive carrier 00:03 removed".
Bay 3 is now missing in the Controller view.
I powered off the system last night, and left it off overnight.  Today I took all the drives out, blew the dust off and reseated them.
Same thing.  Drive 3 is still missing, and now the rebuild task aborted.
The drive bay location shouldn't matter, right?  Can I swap the Bay 3 drive with the Bay 4 drive?
I figure one of two things would happen:
    (1) It will report Bay 3 as being there but Bay 4 as being missing, same situation as is now.  Meaning the problem is in the Bay 3 spare drive.
    (2) It will report Bay 3 as being missing (despite a 'good' drive being present) and Bay 4 will be the (unattached) spare, and the RAID set will be unviable.  Meaning the problem is with the drive bay itself, not whatever drive is plugged into it.
If "Drive carrier removed" is trying to tell me the disk is bad, why do I not see any log messages about it?  I suppose a spare that never gets used could go bad from lack of use, but ... no messages at all?
Hesitant to plunk down $160 on a new spare disk if the present one isn't actually dead ...

    I was talking about this.
This looks like a RAID 5 setup without the parity to me. I would said it basically a RAID 0.
Also you metioned "I guess that previous spare must really have gone 'bad', despite having never been used! "
I wiped everything out, I selected the 3 disks and clicked on "Create RAID Set" with RAID5 selected and the "Use unassigned drives as spares" option checked.  The 3rd disk has always been marked as the spare ever since then.  You do not have a choice to create a "RAID5 setup without the parity".  If I wanted a RAID0 I would have chosen a RAID0!  raidutil now says

Every time the system would 'lose' Drive 3 on boot, I would just keep rebooting until it was 'found', and then manually re-assign the now-'floating' drive as the spare - and the RAID would rebuild.
There was never a problem until the day that prompted this post - when it would not find Drive 3 no matter what I did.  I turned the Mac Pro off for several hours until the drives had all cooled down and it still did not find the drive.  I left the machine on but unmounted the degraded volume until I got the new replacement drive.
I really don't understand what you are getting at. It's like you are trying to tell me I set it up as a 4-drive RAID5 with no parity(!) and that I was in grave danger because one of the disks was gone.  The actual RAID contents (spread across Drives 1, 2 and 4) were never in danger, unless a 2nd disk had failed while the spare was not seen by the Apple RAID card.  I wasn't too worried about that happening.

Hello (hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue)
I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
    could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY  from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?
thanks for your help in advanced.

hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar  problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
    (nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this?  bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"

  • HT1218 I pad and  mac pro including apple store, accept my apple password but the HD TV apple  movies does not. I worked fine until two weeks ago.

My apple password works with IPad,mac pro and apple store. Apple movies do not accept the same password. It  all worked fine until three weeks ago.I have changed nothing

Username and password are not apparently an Apple Care issue they refer you to iTunes support (email) to resolve this issue with iTunes and Netflix account

  • CS4 and Mac Pro with two graphic cards: OpenGL not supported!

I have two graphic cards in my Mac Pro. If a use a dual display setup where both displays are connected to the same card, Photoshop enables OpenGL support (Preferences > Performance).
Switch both displays to the other card, also works fine.
BUT if I connect one display to the first card and the second display to the second card (so each display has its own graphic card) the Open GL support is greyed out (I can not longer use canvas display rotation for example)
This doesn't make sense to me and looks like a bug...

Are you running two of the same cards or are they different? I'm running a pair of NVidia 7300GTs with no issues...and I'm driving a pair of 30" Cinemas and an NEC 26" widescreen. I get better performance on the single 30" than on the card with the two displays. Also note that which PCI slot you are driving the cards in has an impact on their performance...something to look into.

  • Need some urgent help // Streaming windows and Mac Pro

    HI ,
I have a nice "issue" here.
At present I am in a project.
We save the video images and sound by capture in FCP PRO with Mac Intel. Ans next to that using a Windows PC to stream live to internet.
We send the video by using a converter from analog to digital using S-video in and out Firewire. (from the converter).
After the converter we send the the firewire signal to a belkin hub to distribute to Mac and PC.
Evenrything goes fine. But the MAc responds to the PC and the Mac to the PC . When the PC blocks (the image for streaming) the Mac stops capturing. When I (the Mac) cancel capturing the PC stops streaming
PLease assist if you can .. how to handle. we guess that the hub creates the issues ...
Should we use a more link switch ? like a network switch ?

Our video runs through a video switcher which then outputs the signal to a PC (live streaming) and into a DRS-11 DV deck for recording as well as converting to FW which goes into the Mac for a live capture (redundancy) as well.
    <
Yar, you want deal with the VIDEO, not the data stream, which is what you get on FW.
Use a video/audio distribution amplifier to send duplicate versions of your program video and audio content to two or more different encoding/processing systems.
Your boss/clients are not going to understand the technical requirements if they're Web geeks. Try this: If you want two copies of the same book, you don't use a copier. You buy two copies from the printer. You can't use a copier to distribute copies of a book in real time; each page has to be scanned and copied, one at a time, and they have to be collated separately. Anything that interrupts the process, like pulling out the stacks to staple them into, say, chapters (or insert your own metaphor here), causes the copier to stop since it can no longer knows the collation is correct.

  • Xserve Raid- Windows and Mac servers with split RAID speed issues

First, thanks to those that provided info on setting up the RAID for windows to see (2TB+)! I made the needed slices and Windows made a dynamic 2.27TB volume from the two slices.
Now, I am noticing a speed drop on writing from mac clients to a Win2003 server connected via FC (optical) to the 2nd RAID controller (optical transceiver installed 2-4Gb/s).
My Networking (via Raid Admin) setting is Automatic for Speed and Topology.
My Performance is set same for Lower and Upper controllers:
    Write cache ON
    Host Cache Flushing OFF
    Drive Write Cache ON
    Steady Streaming OFF
    8 stripes/512KB/Disk
On the Windows end, drive is there, no shadowing or caching (for offline).
All drive modules are green (no yellow) and drives are new on that RAID (#8-14)
When copying files (1Mb to 10Mb), it takes seconds to minutes to write!
(I also noticed my controller caches are 128MB; can/should these be upped?)
I would also ask if I add a Sanbox switch so that I can add a FC tape drive, is there any docs/links recommended to ensure I've setup properly (Arbitrated loop versus pt-2-pt, transceivers, cable lengths...)?
    Thanks for any help!

  • Apple RAID Card help needed

OK, new Mac Pro with Apple RAID card and three drives. Discovered RAID 5 is not setup as shipped.
Thought I would need to run Disk Utility, told no it's RAID Admin, but found out it's a app called RAID Utility, so I set this up. Also found out I could "migrate" existing OS X Server volume on Drive 1 to the RAID 5 without reinstalling... but after migration, found one partition with the OS and another empty partition. Are there any tools to expand the existing Partition 1 to include space on Partition 2 with the OS, without destroying/reinstalling it? Thanks - Lewis

You could open Disk Utility and click the RAID volume. Under partitions, see if you can make it 1 partition and retain data.

  • Apple RAID Card and 3TB Drives only show 2.2 TB

I tried a 3TB Seagate Barracuda XT drive in the July 2010 Mac Pro (and a Jan 2008 Mac Pro) on the RAID Card that came with the machines (so one is the RAID Card now shipping) and both show a maximum of 2.2 TB with a 3TB drive.
I'm curious if anyone else has tried this with different results. Any luck in getting the RAID Card to see the full 3TB in the drives?
By the way, without the RAID Card, the Mac (OS 10.6.4) sees the full 3TB, but not with it.
    Anyone else seeing this?

Okay. Seems Apple didn't plan for or certify 3TB.
However, Apple doesn't support using 3rd party drives. Some do, and in some situations, drives you would think work don't, or they work but only briefly.
When I said read FAQ I was thinking of all the points like this:
Question: *Which drives does Apple support for the Mac Pro RAID Card and the Xserve RAID Card?*
Answer: Only Apple SATA drives and Promise 450GB SAS Drive modules sold through the Apple Store are supported for use with the Mac Pro RAID Card (Early 2009) and the Xserve RAID Card (Early 2009).
Apple 300GB SAS Drive modules are supported with the Mac Pro RAID Card (Late 2007) and Xserve RAID Card (Early 2007).
Drives must be either all Serial ATA (SATA) or all Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives. SSD drive modules are not recommended for the Apple RAID Card because these drives use their own on-disk cache and cannot take advantage of the protection provided by the battery-backed cache on the RAID card.

    Hey guys !

actually i got this message again about an year or so back ... so yes it happened before ... Apple replaced my battery

The RAID card battery backs up the memory buffers on the card. These are needed for calculating the checksum blocks used in RAID 5 and similar schemes.
If you are not running RAID 5 or similar, you do not need the battery. For that matter, you do not need the RAID card, either (unless you are running SAS drives).

  • Repair Apple RAID card battery

I have an Apple RAID card Mac Pro (Early 2009) RAID Card (top picture) with a bad battery. Unfortunately these batteries usually die after a few years and the replacement is not cheap. Looking on ebay, I can only get them from the US, but I live in Europe and it will cost me at least $150.
From what I suspect reading the case, the battery is a 3.7 V Lithium battery, probably with built-in electronics that I can perhaps get for $5 from China. Any soldering work is not a problem. If I can replace the digitizer of an iPad mini, I can probably replace a battery too.
The case of the battery looks like a regular aluminum box and the lit is probably just glued onto the battery. It's seems quite sturdy and would require some force to open. Has anyone ever opened an Apple Raid Card battery? I'm reluctant to apply much heat to open the case, though external heat might be ok. Any ideas? I'm aware of the risks.

To summarise the 'end of days' issue with RAID5 the problem is that with the much bigger size of hard disks now available and being used e.g. 4TB or even bigger, it takes so long to rebuild a RAID5 array when replacing a faulty drive that the chance of another drive failing during the rebuild is becoming more and more likely. This is actually made worse by the fact that a RAID rebuild causes a lot of activity and therefore 'stress' on the hard disks in order to do the rebuild process. It can take more than 24 hours to do a complete RAID5 rebuild and during all that time you are vulnerable to a complete failure.
RAID6 is a partial solution in that you start off with redundancy provided by two drives rather than RAID5 which has just one so RAID6 can survive two drive failures. It however only reduces the chances of having a complete RAID failure during a rebuild it does not eliminate it.
Standard RAID5 or RAID6 therefore is being increasingly viewed as having reached a brick wall.
For Enterprises i.e. those with lots of money you can just throw more drives at the problem e.g. RAID10. For the rest of us the hope is on new alternatives to RAID5. The one I am particularly excited about is BTRFS, this is a combination of both a RAID layer and a file-system layer, it is able to use file checksums from the file-system layer to spot and fix RAID issues and this is orders of magnitude more efficient than having to do a complete RAID resync/rebuild. This approach has two advantages, firstly it protects a problem described as 'bit rot' whereby a byte or block in a file can become corrupted, the checksums allow this to be detected and automatically fixed, the second is that it can do a rebuild of actual real data whereas a normal RAID rebuild rebuilds all blocks on a drive even empty ones.
BTRFS is still pre-release especially its equivalent of RAID5 and RAID6 but it is getting closer. (RAID 0 and 1 for BTRFS are already considered ready for use.)
ZFS is a similar 'new' file-system to BTRFS and at one point there was talk that Apple were going to switch to using ZFS but this no longer looks like happening. ZFS was a solution being developed and 'owned' by Sun Microsystems who are now part of Oracle. BTRFS is free open-source.
I personally hope that Apple at some point implement BTRFS.
There are some NAS manufacturers already implementing BTRFS however they are currently 'cheating'. NetGear for example use BTRFS on their current ReadyNAS OS 6.x models but rather than using a 'pure' BTRFS approach have a implemented BTRFS on top of a standard RAID5 system created by mdraid. They did this because as I mentioned above the official BTRFS RAID5/6 solution is not yet ready for real-world use. As a result you get some of the benefits of BTRFS like being more easily able to expand the size of a file-system, but you don't get the full checksum derived protection of BTRFS because it is not integrated to the RAID level. Thecus I believe have gone the same approach as NetGear. Synology and QNAP are still waiting for BTRFS to be 'finished' before implementing it.

  • Apple raid card - installion lion

    hi there!
I would like to install lion, due to heavy printing problems with oki fiery printer, that would not rund unter 10.6.
but I learned, installing lions to a mac pro with hardware raid card is critical.
what do I do beside having made a time machine backup, of course?
lion can obviously not build a recovery partition on a raid-card system.
    Can I still install lion?
    I run a mac pro, 2 x 2.93 GHz 6 Core Intel Xeon,
    32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 RAM
    with a MacPro Raid Card
    2.00, Firmware 1.0.2,
    4 SSD 512 to a RAID 0
    and a raid-controller pci for extarnal G-Speed es-pro RAID
PCI slot. cryptic to me: "Manufarcutrar 0x1103, pci1103,4320"
    help is very much appreciated
I run a graphic stuio. I can not afford to have a crashed mac pro again...
and I need a printer dirver, that may print correctly.
    regards
    adrian

    Clone your system.
    Clone your RAID volume.
    Clone as backup strategy.
Clean install Lion on a single drive.
    Clone back.
Other options: ditch and sell Apple RAID for another PCIe controller.
Sounds like the OWC SSD PCIe card would be your cup of soup.

  • Using a Mac Pro w / Apple Internal Hardware RAID Card?

Anyone using a Mac Pro with a Apple Hardware RAID Card 2010?
    ( I have a 12 Core )
Is it worth the $600-700 ?
How much faster than the software RAID 0?
I see Hamm's RAID tips chart .. but it doesn't include such options .. plus it is based on a PC system.
Any tips would be great ..
I find many areas where the application is slow / unresponsive .. and I'm not sure where the bottleneck is ... Maybe the hardware RAID will solve it?
I'm really am impressed with CS5 .. it would be even better with some adjustments .. but I am absolutely disappointed with sluggish performance on my top-of-the-line Mac Pro 12 Core.
This is not what I expected for a $8,000 machine.
Some users says that the port of CS5 for the Mac has taken a back seat to the Windows version at Adobe.
I can't imagine that Adobe would not put 100% effort into Mac products.
    Go Team!!!

I have a 2009 Mac Pro 3.33GHz Quad core w/ Apple RAID card, 16GB RAM from OWC, and Apple's Radeon HD 5870 GPU.
I have RAID 0 set across 3x1TB drives internally, and the standard 640GB drive for OSX and all program files. I set all video assets, renders, previews and such on the 3TB RAID.
This seems to work wonderfully. I built this system specifically to edit a feature film shot on P2 DVCProHD, and I've been impressed with how it handles it. This was all built prior to CS5, which took me by surprise. Had I known nVidia would become such a problem for Apple, I would have built a PC, but that's another story.
I just started a new project in CS5 on the same system, this time using H.264 video from my Nikon D7000, and so far, it seems to play just as nicely, despite not having hardware acceleration via CUDA technology. Yellow bars on top, even. I haven't had any problems with clips taking a long time to populate on the timeline or any of that, so perhaps the RAID card helps there.
All this aside, I've already decided to upgrade my RAID for another reason. Right now, my backup is performed via an eSATA-connected external drive through a PCI eSATA card. After every edit session, I dump everything on the RAID onto the external drive, and it goes much faster than the old FW800 transfer used to. I'm about to replace my Apple RAID card with an Areca card and set up a 4-bay RAID 3 via an SAS connection. This will allow for excellent data throughput while offering more security than my current RAID 0 / manual backup system, and free up the internal drives for backups, exports and render files.
I believe in hardware RAID, but I'm not as knowledgeable as Harm and others are about it. I had my Mac built to order with the Apple RAID card, so I have no experience using Premiere with a software RAID. Due to my smooth experience using it, I think it was worth it, but plenty of people say the Apple RAID card is rubbish, and to go with Areca or Atto cards. I didn't know about them until after I built my system, and even though it will cost a couple thousand to upgrade my RAID from this point, I expect to have an even better system than I already have.
I hope this helps, and feel free to ask any questions I didn't address.

  • Apple Raid Card panic on Mac Pro Early 2008 after installing SSD as an enhanced JBOD.

I recently installed a SSD drive in my Mac Pro to replace an aging, original boot drive.  I have an Apple raid card with 3 other hds attached - all in an enhanced JBOD configuration.  After installing the SSD from OWC (3G Electra SATA II Compatible) everything appeared to work fine.  But after 36 hours I received a apple raid card kernel panic alert.  See below for diagnostic crash log.  OWC support says that their drive should work fine - now I am not so sure.  Anyone out there with suggestions/solutions is most welcomed.

RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
