Windows and Office for Mac in a MacBook Air?

I am planning to buy a new notebook, but I am having trouble deciding between the Macbook Air with 256 GB or 500GB and the MacBook Pro 13''. I am tired of carrying my heavy MacBook Pro 15'' so I want a real shift in portability and I will be running Mail, Safari, Calendar, Contacts, Office for Mac and Windows in Parallels for Explorer, Visio and Project. The issue is that with less money I can buy a MacBook Pro with 750GB but it is heavier and the HD is not solid state. And I am not sure that if I go for the Macbook Air with 256 GB (which is affordable) I will be able to run everything I need.
Someone that may help me decide?

Applications do not take up that much space. Here is a partial list of apps on one of my computers:
And there is more. This Applications folder is about 20gB. There are other files that come with these programs, but they take up much less space.
In sum then, you will be fine with 250 gB, of which you will take away say 30 gB for Parallels and its contents.

How do I install software (specifically Office for Mac) on my MacBook Air?  Thanks.

    Q7: How do I activate?
A7: To activate the product, follow these steps:
    1. Launch application and click Enter your product key.
    2. Review the Software License Agreement and click Continue.
    3. You must agree to Software License Agreement. Click Continue.
    4. Enter your product key and click Activate. The Activation Wizard automatically contacts the Microsoft licensing servers through your Internet connection. When you activate the product by using the Internet, the product key is sent to Microsoft through an encrypted transfer. If you decide to activate the product through the Internet and you are not already connected, the wizard alerts you that there is no connection. Click either Activate by Phone or Activate later.  Note Do not lose the product key. Keep the packaging, or note the number. Keep the number information in a safe location.  Your product key is a unique sequence of 25 letters and numbers divided into groups of 5.  If you purchased a box with a DVD: The product is located on the back of the Office for Mac DVD sleeve.  If you purchase through a web site: The product key is sent to you in email with the title Microsoft Office for Mac – Order Confirmation”
    5. If the activation is successful, you receive the following message:
Your copy of <product title> is now activated.
If for any reason the Activation fails, click Activate by phone. Select your location and then dial the phone number on the screen. For example, for United States: 1866-825-4797 or United Kingdom: (44)-(203)-147-4930. You can telephone an Activation Center to obtain the help of a customer service representative and activate the product. Telephone activation might take longer than activation through the Internet. You should be at the computer when you call. Additionally, you should have your software product key. When you select this option, the Activation Wizard generates an Installation ID. You musy have this Installation ID to activate the product by telephone.
Important When you telephone the Activation Center, you are prompted to read the Installation ID numbers.
Note Activation Center numbers are not listed for all locations in this article because telephone contact numbers vary by license and also by country or region. The Activation Wizard gives you the number to telephone the Activation Center.

  • Can't open Office for Mac documents on MacBook Air by simply clicking on the document.

On my MacBook Air, normally I can click on Office for Mac documents and they open no problem. However, now if I click on the document nothing happens. I can only open them if I open the application first and go File > Open. I have had this problem before but I can't remember how I solved it.

You may want to select one of those documents in Finder and then use the Finder File menu Get Info (Command I) to see what application it is set to Open With. That can be changed in the same place. Another method is to right-click on the file.

  • Downloaded MS office for mac 2011 on MacBook Air - ROP

...is it compatible with MS 2013?
If not, is MS 2010 compatible with MS 2013?
Have on-line testing tomorrow in which they advised that the current MS program that they use is MS 2013...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
The curent verison of Office for Mac is 2011 of course they do, they are blind to the fact that the entire world does not use Windows... If you have trouble with the website try to access it via Firefox or Chrome (if Safari doesn't play well on that site) sometimes Firefox or Chrome does a better job interpreting all the non-standard WC3 code Windows sites love to use. Download a copy of each of those browsers in advance an try them out so you are prepared in advance.

Hi I have a macbook air which obviously doesnt come with a disc drive, but have a disc for microsoft office i want to put on...is there a way of downloading it and using the same product key to validate? or can I do it via disc sharing from my old PC? thanks

Download the trial from the Microsoft site, then activate with the code that came with your box set.
And yes, you can use Remote Disc to make use of the DVD unit on your PC.

You need a Firewire cable to run between the two Macs.  Using Utility>Migration Assistant running on your new MacBook Pro, transfer what you want (with all the preferences and such) from your MacBook to your MBP.  Here's more info from Apple.
You might have an issue with the Serial number for Office, but hopefully you have that around.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hi, in our Enterprise environment, we have a single mac with Mavericks version 10.9.2 and Office for Mac 14.4.1. When setting up outlook, we are trying to connect to a mailbox on exchange server 2007.

Hi, in our Enterprise environment, we have a single mac with Mavericks version 10.9.2 and Office for Mac 14.4.1. When setting up outlook, we are trying to connect to a mailbox on exchange server 2007. We put in the EWS details in the server field since our autodiscover function is not functioning. But still it doesn't work. There are no errors, no popups. We turned on the logging and in the logs, it says a error of -3259. We are stuck and any help will be really appreciated.

I have a customer experiencing exactly the same issue. Their computer is running Windows 7 Pro with Office 2007 SP3. After seemingly exhausting all troubleshooting options, I backed up their data, formatted the hard drive and performed a clean install of
Windows and all their applications. It didn't solve the problem!
What's strange is the customer also has a laptop computer, running the same version of Outlook, and that doesn't experience any problems connecting to Office 365 on the same network.
My next step is to send the customer a new ADSL modem/router to try.
I have another customer on Office 365, also running Outlook 2007, and they also experience issues with emails sitting in the outbox while Outlook displays the status message “Outlook is trying to retrieve data from the Microsoft exchange server outlook.office365.com.”
In this case Outlook doesn't freeze/stop responding, like it does for the first customer I mentioned.

  • My CD/DVD drive reads regular CDs/DVDs but installation DVDs such as iWork's and office for Mac it spits it out after trying to read it. Please help!!!

For some reason when I insert installation discs for programs like iWork's and office for Mac the drive does not read the disc. I tried movies and music and they worked perfectly. I was able to fix the problem with the iWork's disc by creating a disc image in another drive, I have yet to do this with the Office for Mac but I would like to know what could be the reason for this problem. Any help is appreciated.

    @ RabidPineappler and Froggiefo20...
I forgot that I have an extended AppleCare Protection Plan, I contacted Apple today (in Sydney) and they took me through step by step. I tried inserting my OS X disc and it accepted it, I tried putting in a commercial DVD (Star Wars) and it started playing. I then tried putting in a commercial CD and it wouldn't work through iTunes. It made incredibly sick whirring noises and then eventually (approx 5 minutes later) appearred on my desktop, but iTunes7 would not recognise the disc.
Then he suggested I log in under another username which I did... Then my drive prompty died. It does not accept any disc now. He said that I need to have my iBook seen to by a technician. Since I have the extended warranty, my repair shouldn't cost me anything (the extended warranty was ovver $400, so it better not cost anything), so I can't give you an indication as to what you will be up for.
You do not need o take your iBook to the place where you bought it, but ensure you have your sales receipt.
    Hope I helped.

  • Just installed snow leopard and office for mac - now my computer is running very slow.  Why?

I've recently installed snow leopard and office for mac - now my computer is running very slowly - why?

Which version of office did you install? If its 2008 the early version had some problems and you will want to update the office software to i think it is 12.3.0
If it is 2011 you might want to do the same thing.

how do i access word for mac on my macbook air?

Purchase it.  Here's one link to an Amazon site to buy one of the many Office configurations:

You would receive Office on a CD, and need a disk drive for your MacBook Air to access so you could download the software.

  • Buying a new MAcBook Pro - How do i move files and office for Mac

I am buying a new MacBook Pro and have a license for my office for Mac 2008. Can I re-install into the new computer or do i need to buy a new license? Also, how do i move all my itunes, photos, and files from one to the other!

Use TDM for transferring files, drag libraries into folders (iTunes Library into iTunes Folder for example). The Firewire cable will need to be a 6 to 9 pin, or an adapter.
If you're giving up the pB, De-authorize it for iTunes.
Don't do applications between G4 and Intel machines, better to reinstall.
Uninstall Office and use your key on the new Machine. Run Office update.
Connecting Your PowerBook to Another Computer Using FireWire Target Disk Mode.
If you want to transfer files between your PowerBook and another FireWire-equipped
Macintosh computer, or you have a problem that prevents your computer from starting
up, you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to connect to another computer. When you
start up your computer in FireWire Target Disk Mode, the other computer can access
your PowerBook as if it were an external hard disk.
Note: When using FireWire Target Disk Mode, it’s a good idea to connect your power
    adapter to the PowerBook.
To connect your PowerBook to another computer in FireWire Target Disk Mode:
1 Make sure that your PowerBook is shut down.
2 Use a FireWire cable to connect your PowerBook to another FireWire-equipped
    computer.
3 Start up your PowerBook and immediately hold down the T key.
Your PowerBook display shows the FireWire logo. The other computer’s display shows
the PowerBook internal hard disk icon. You can now drag and drop files between the
    computers.
4 When you finish transferring files, drag the PowerBook hard disk icon to the Trash.
5 Press the power button (®) on the PowerBook to shut it down, and then disconnect
    the FireWire cable.

  • Do I need antivirus software with MS Office for Mac on my Macbook Pro?

I am brand new to a Mac and just recently bought a MacBook Pro. I also purchased MS Office 2011 for Mac and have installed it. I've heard you don't need anitvirus for a Mac but I didn't know if having MS Office installed on my Mac made the circumstance any different. Any help if appreciated.

No. Since Office for Mac runs under OS X and not Windows, no antu-virus software is needed.

  • HT3231 Trouble transferring Office for Mac onto new Macbook Pro Retina

I just transferred Office 2011 from my old MacBookPro to a new MacBookPro w/ Retina but it says "The Office for Mac installation did not complete successfully because there was a problem with the installer.  To fix the issue please reinstall Office for Mac."  My original installation of Office was via a disk with an enclosed Product Key.  The new MacBook doesn't have a DVD drive.  Can I just download a new copy of Office and use the old Product Key or is there another solution??

Yes as Kappy points out or you could make a DMG of the Office DVD and copy that over to your new MBPr. Or you could buy an external DVD drive and it does not have to be an Apple brand DVD drive. Any USB external DVD drive will work. Best to get one that is Tray Load instead of the Slot load that Apple uses.
