  • Error [0x8007007b] when backing up system state in windows backup for windows 2008 R2

    running wbadmin system state results in the following error log:
    Error in backup of C:\windows\\systemroot\ during enumerate: Error [0x8007007b] The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
    Having searched all over the web, the consensus seems to be that this error means that some service has a bad image path. I even sound a nifty powershell script that discovers services with possible problems. I fixed the problems it brought up in the registry
    (there was only one), but I still get that error... I've been backwards and forwards through the list of services many times, and I don't see any problems.. Anybody got an idea??

    Hi,
    The issue cause by the following aspects:
    1. The path incorrectly points to Windows\\systemroot\system32\drivers
    2. Multiple SCSI controller drivers are being loaded at boot time and one or more is not needed. The failing SCSI controller driver is creating an issue for the WBAdmin/VSS backup process.
    To resolve this issue, change the value in the registry key for
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LSI_SAS and change the Imagepath, from \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\lsi_sas.sys to System32\drivers\lsi_sas.sys
    Note: After making above registry changes, the machine might not boot normally. Follow below mentioned steps to recover from the boot issue.
    1. Boot the machine into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
    2. Open Regedit and navigate to each of the following registry keys to verify their Start values are correct.
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\service\LSI_FC
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\service\LSI_SAS
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\service\LSI_SAS2
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\service\LSI_SCSI
    3. The Start value should be 0x3 for each driver that is NOT the SCSI controller driver determined earlier. Change the Start value as needed.
    Values and meanings for the Start value:
    0x0 = Load on boot
    0x1 = System
    0x2 = Auto Load
    0x3 = Load on demand
    0x4 = Disabled
    4. Reboot the machine in normal mode.
    5. Re-run the WBAdmin command, the backup should work correctly.

  • How to access the datasource window in SSRS for sql server 2008 R2 for writing my query without having to go through the wizard?

    I have used SSRS a lot years ago with Sql Server 2000 and Sql Server 2005. I have written external assemblies, ... But now I have to do this with Sql Server 2008 (R2 -- which I realize I am way behind the times already but ...)  in sql server 2000 and
    2005 there was a tab for datasource to the left of the tab for design which was to the left of the preview tab. How do I get to the datasource window in sql server 2008 (r2) ?
    I see that datasource explorer.  But where can I get to the datasource window to edit my queries and so forth for sql server 2008 (R2)?
    Thanks
    Rich P

    I think I found the answer to my question --- just right-click on the the Data Sources or Datasets for editing connections and dataset queries.  I'm guessing it gets even fancier with Sql Svr 2012 - 2014.    Man, that's the one thing
    about coding platforms -- you let it go for a few years and come back, and everything has changed (well, a lot of things).  Now I need to figure out how to add an external assembly to SSRS 2008 (R2).

  • Help! Licence for SQL Server 2008 VM on Windows 2012

    I am confused by latest Microsoft Virtual server licence for SQL Server 2008.
    We have a Hyper-V host running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter. Displayed in its Task Manager, it has 16 cores and 32 logical processors (with hyper-threading turned on). A SQL Server VM is running on this host with 10 Virtual processors (showing from Hper-V

    We are using "Per Core Licensing Model". Now, the question is how many licences we need to purchase for the above SQL Server?
    There are "SQL Server 2008 Licensing Guide", "Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Virtualization Licensing Guide" and "Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Licensing Guide". But none of them covers this scenario, which is running SQL Server 2008 on
    Windows 2012 Hyper-V host Server.
    Could you please provide me your opinion: Should I license 10 cores for the SQL Server VM or license 5 cores (because the hyper-threading on physical server) ? Thank you very much in advance!

  • MS14-044 for SQL Server 2008 Standard on Windows Server 2003?

    MS14-044 was recently released and states that it applied to MS SQL Server 2008 SP3, yet the patches available for this security bulletin do not list Windows Server 2003 in the supported operating systems. Does MS14-044 not apply to SQL Server running
    on Windows Server 2003? If it does apply, why isn't there an update available to run on Windows Server 2003?

    Hi Chasg76,
    According to your description, the patches available for MS14-044 do not list Windows Server 2003 in the supported operating systems and you want to know whether MS14-044 applies to SQL Server running on Windows Server
    2003.
    Based on my test, KB2977321 applies to SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 product and it does apply to SQL Server 2008 SP3 running on Windows Server 2003.
    I installed SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 in Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86. After the service pack 3 installation completed, KB2977321 was offered in the Automatic Update.
    Besides, you can manually install the update by downloading the update form the Download Center web site as well.
    I also tried the manually installation and I downloaded the Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321) from this web: Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321) (https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS14-044),
    it was installed successfully.
    After installed security upgrade, I checked the file attributes and compared to this article: MS14-044: Description of the security update for SQL Server 2008 SP3 (GDR): August 12, 2014(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2977321/en-us).
    The result is the same.
    According to my test, MS14-044 applies to SQL Server running on Windows Server 2003 even though Windows Server 2003 is not listed in the supported operating systems.

  • Windows 8.1 TPM ownership on Server 2008 R2 schema - not to spec?

    My organization is running AD DS on Server 2008 R2 schema. Already a bad start, I know, but let's pretend that's impossible to change. In our default domain policy, we have the following setting
    enabled to require AD backup of TPM owner authorization value hashes:
    Computer Settings\Policies\Administrative Templates\System\Trusted Platform Module Services\Turn on TPM backup to Active Directory Domain Services
    As a result, when I try to encrypt an AD-bound Windows 8 Enterprise machine with BitLocker, it fails because Windows 8 tries to store the TPM authorization hash as a
    child object (with type ms-TPM-OwnershipInformation) of the computer object, while the Server 2008 R2 schema requires storing this information as an
    attribute (specifically, msTPM-OwnerInformation) of the computer object. This is perfectly fine and dandy - in fact, it's clearly documented in a TechNet article (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj131725.aspx#BKMK_AuthValue)
    that this behavior is intentional, and the solution is to update to Server 2012 schema. Cool.
    The bit that concerns me is that when I try to encrypt an AD-bound Windows 8.1 Enterprise machine, it succeeds under these same circumstances. However, despite the policy setting requiring the TPM backup, it simply doesn't occur - it is neither stored in
    the computer attribute, nor is it created as a child object to the computer.
    I have not been able to find any documentation that would indicate that Windows 8.1 behaves differently from Windows 8 on this matter. As the mainstream support end date for Server 2008 R2 is not until 01/13/14, I wouldn't expect that Microsoft has intentionally
    implemented what I have described. Might this then be an unintended behavior?

    Hi,
    I made a deep research about this problem today. Here is some new updates below:
    According to the library:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd875529(v=ws.10).aspx
    You should also configure AD DS before configuring BitLocker on client computers. If BitLocker is enabled first, recovery information for those computers will not be automatically added to AD DS.  If necessary, recovery information
    can be backed up to AD DS after BitLocker has been enabled by using either the Manage-bde command-line tool or the BitLocker Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) provider.
    That's to say, If you never initialize the TPM of Windows 8 before, but Windows 8.1 machine did. When you use TPM first time in Domain Environment, the Windows 8 machine may encounter the problem like initialization failed, but Windows 8.1 would works properly.
    To verify our inference, you can try to run the command like manage-bde -protectors -adbackup c: -id {xxxx,xxxx,xxxx,xxxxx}
    at Windows 8.1 to backup Recovery information to AD to check if it works fine.
    Here is another blog which further talking about how to backup recovery information in AD after BitLocker is turned ON in Windows 7. I guess this article would be helpful with your problem:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2010/04/06/how-to-backup-recovery-information-in-ad-after-bitlocker-is-turned-on-in-windows-7.aspx
    In addition, We need to know that TPM recovery information is backed up when you:
    1. Set the TPM owner password during TPM initialization.
    2. Change the TPM owner password.
    Therefore, please check your situation if it similar with the pheonmenon above, if not, please feel free let us know.

  • Group Chat feature in Office Communications Server 2007 R2 does not work in Windows Server 2008 R2 domains

       Hello to all, there are two confliting articles about this topic:
       1-
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/upgrade-domain-controllers-to-windows-server-2008-r2(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_Whatsnew : this one says that it does not work "The Group Chat feature in Office Communications Server 2007 R2 does not work in Windows
    Server 2008 R2 domains". This article was updated in 2013.
       2-
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee692314(office.13).aspx: this other article says that it will function "Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Group Chat will function in a Windows Server 2008 R2 forest". This article was updated in
    2010 and was refered by the first one.
       What is the correct support position for Group Chat feature in Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 domains?
       Regards, EEOC.

    Hi,
    I notice the following sentence in the link below “Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Group Chat will not function in a Windows Server 2008 R2 forest or when Group Chat member servers are joined to a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain.
    We know of an issue with changes in Windows 2008 R2 that requires a Group Chat Client and Group Chat Admin Tools hotfix. The Group Chat Client and Group Chat Admin Tools hotfixes are currently scheduled for mid-April 2010.”
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/nexthop/archive/2010/11/06/supportability-for-office-communications-server-2007-r2-and-windows-server-2008-r2.aspx
    So in my opinion, if you update to the latest version of Windows Server 2008 R2, OCS Server 2007 R2 and Group Chat Client, Group Chat Admin Tools to the latest version, it should work.
    However, the best method for you is make a lab to test the problem firstly.

  • Got Display driver via Windows Update for Windows 8.1 and try to use it for Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hi Everyone,
    the following driver cab is from Windows Update:

    It includes this display driver:
    Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1)
    My problem is: I can't install this driver on Windows Server 2012 R2.
    I tried the following, nothing worked:
    a) pnputil -i -a intel.cab
    b) Extract cab, update the device's driver in device manager, select "search for driver software in this location"
    c) copy the files in system32/, system32/drivers, syswow64/ from a Windows 8.1 system to a Windows Server 2012 R2 system
    Isn't it true that any Windows 8.1 driver should also work for Windows Server 2012 R2 (same os version)?

  • Windows 2008 R2 does not work on Sunfire X4170

    Hi, I recently bought a used X4170 server and have a weird problem. Windows 2008 R2 does not work, but 2012 does. I tried RTM version and a version with SP1. The problem is this:
    After installing, I set the password and windows just displays a blank desktop, sometimes it boots but freezes soon after - the mouse cursor moved but nothing else works.
    Booting in Safe Mode works and Windows do not freeze. The Event Log contains lots and lots (about 20 per second) of these entries:

  • Update DISM in WinPE, Windows ADK for Windows 8.1 Update

    Windows ADK for Windows 8.1 Update, creates WinPE with DISM version 6.3.9600.16384.
    Latest build of Windows 8.1 Pro Build 9600, dated 22/11/2014, has DISM version 6.3.9600.17031.

    Have created listings of all the DISM files in WinPE and Windows 8.1, but reluctant to copy files across, as I assume that registration / registry changes are also required.
    Does anyone know how we can update the version of DISM in WinPE to 6.3.9600.17031?
