Windows Bootcamp no longer bootable

Hi,
I installed windows XP onto my MacBookPro about six months ago and everything was working fine.  I haven't used it for a couple months.  I decided I wanted to use Windows today and when I turned on my computer and held down the alt/option key, it didn't load anything (usually it displays "MACINTOSH HD" and "BOOTCAMP"), so I had to turn on my computer again and just use the apple.  I repaired all disk permissions and verified the disk on the MACINTOSH HD volume and everything is okay.  I can't do anything with the BOOTCAMP volume on disk utility.
I also went into System Preferences and Startup Disk, and it does not display the Bootcamp partition as a startup volume, only Macintosh HD and "network startup"
What has gone wrong and how can I get my Windows to function again?
Thank you.

I used to have XP on a MacBook Pro and experienced the same problem. My only solution was a Winclone backup that I used to replace the faulty XP.  With Win 7 you can start from the install DVD and use system recovery to perform startup repair, system restore, and some other remedies. I do recall that this was not possible with an XP install disk.
If you do not have a replaceable backup then you will most likely have to reinstall from the start. Before doing this consider going to Windows 7 as XP is as obsolete as Mac OS 9.

  • Windows partition no longer bootable

Last night, I was using Bootcamp fine through VMware Fusion, no issue at all.  I shut the VM down correctly and closed VMware.
Later that evening, I was trying to copy files onto my iPad through iTunes and got the warning that I didn't have permissions to view the contents of that file – I checked file info, I do, and also transferred the same file to my iPhone no more than 5 minutes prior.
Just in case, I booted into the recovery partition on 10.9.2 and ran permission and disk checks.  When verifying the entire disk however, I got the error "The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system".
A repair couldn't be done on the live disk so I booted back into OS X and created a recovery USB.  From this, I ran the repairs to the entire disk, and repaired the permissions and disk for my Mac HD partition, and then checked the disk again in the recovery partition and whilst in OS X – the error is no longer registering.
From here – I no longer have access to Bootcamp (natively, or via VMware).  The partition is mounting in Finder, and viewable in Disk Utility.  It even appears in the "Startup Disk" pref pane, however, selecting the partition here just results in a blank screen on boot.
Before I booted into the recovery partition using the "alt" key, the Windows parition was there.  Since that error, it's no longer available.
I've not resized the partition, nor have I changed any disk sizes.
I did, however, run the following commands following the iTunes issue in an attempt to correct:
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
I understand I can probably remove the partition and start again, but that defeats the point.  Surely there must be a fix through command line or something?
I'm not a computer novice, but this field is a whole new ballpark for me.  I'm googling for answers, but they may as well be in another language – the common notions seem to be a broken GPT or MBR/GPT out of sync.
Below are the results of various terminal commands – maybe someone could analyze and point me in the right direction?
Kind regards and thanks in advance,
    Jamie

    Hi, me again.
When you found the setupact.log file (from the other thread) did you do a search for "detected boot environment"?

  • Bootcamp no longer bootable after adding and deleting partitions

I am using a 2014 Macbook Pro with OSX 10.9.5
I was trying to add a partition to install Ubuntu on and after adding and deleting partitions, my bootcamp partition will no longer boot whether I use rEFIt or bootcamp assistant or normal osx boot menu.
Judging from the information I got from similar threads on this I think this information will be useful

It wasnt like this before. Before 3 and 4 had some of the same values from above instead of all 0s. After trying to take advice from threads with similar problems and entering stuff into the command line it became like this. I think I might have messed thing up while looking for a quick fix.
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

I'm not sure how to edit my replies so I'm just gonna make another reply. I assumed the following values:
    GPT 3 Start
    GPT 3 End
    GPT 3 Size
    NTFS Start
    NTFS Offset
    NTFS End
    NTFS Size
    293378384
    293380320
    1936
    294649856
    1936
    490233855
    195584000
I followed the rest of the instructions given here. I made sure to enter the second number with a + sign. After doing all of that all these checks worked:
Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?
Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?
Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?
I've always been able to access my bootcamp files from finder and I can try to boot from System Preferences -> startup disk, from rEFIt and also from my macbooks startup manager that I access by holding down option while booting.
I'm starting to think I've misrepresented my problem and that I've been looking at the wrong threads. Every time I try to boot windows I get a black screen with the Windows logo and some text saying something like "starting automatic recovery" or something like that. It then takes me to a blue screen displaying an error number and telling me to use recovery tools on the installation media. Maybe this is different from the problems I've been looking at in other threads.
I've tried using the same USB I used to install bootcamp with but it doesn't give me the option of repairing the installation.
EDIT: So I figured out how to edit replies. Anyway I just tried to boot into Windows and checked. The black screen with the Windows logo says "Preparing Automatic Repair". The blue screen gives me the error 0xc00000e.

  • HT203909 Why can't you provide specific instructions here about how to make the USB drive bootable?  The article referenced is not dedicated to Bootcamp--too long, too many options.  How do you make it bootable?

Why can't you provide specific instructions here in HT203909 (Boot Camp: Creating an ISO image from a Windows installation DVD) about how to make the USB drive bootable?  The article referenced for partitioning the drive is not dedicated to Bootcamp--too long, too many options.  How do you make it bootable?

If your BC Assistant shows the option to create a USB Installer, it automatically is marked as bootable. There is no need to have manual intervention to make a bootable USB. Once the process is manually modified, it is supported by the person modifying it.
You have two or three options (depending on your Mac Model).
    1. Create USB... - Use a USB2 flash drive, which is erased and formatted. If your Mac supports ISOs then BCA will prompt for the Media. Any Mac which does not have a built-in Optical drive will support an ISO. There are specific Mac models which support both, DVD and USB based installation.
    2. Download Software from Apple servers...
    3. Install Windows...
Are any additional instructions really necessary?

  • Windows Partition No Longer Shows Up After Accidental Premature Closing of Camptune

    Mac OS X 10.7.5
I was running Paragon Camptune to expand my Windows 7 partition. The progress bar reached the end and stayed there for about 30 minutes. The Camptune window was then accidentally closed and Camptune quit itself. I restarted the computer but the Windows partition no longer shows up when I try to boot it, only Mac OSX and Recovery Disk. The Bootcamp drive is no longer accessable from System Preferences, and the Bootcamp partition folder is no longer accessable in the Devices area of Finder. Camptune no loner recognizes that there was a partition. Thus, I am no longer able to access the partition's contents or delete it and make a new one.
It would be preferable if I could fix the partition and have it accessable again, however I have no problem with deleting it and making a new partition. Any advice? Thanks for your time.

    Hi Eric,
Bootcamp does show up in the disk utility but it is grey instead of black like the Macintosh HD.
    The following information is available:
    Mount Point: Not mounted
Format: Windows NT File System (NTFS)
    Owners Enabled: -
    Number of Folders: -
    Capacity:  274.55 GB
    Available: -
    Used: -
    Number of Files: -
What might be the best way to continue to repair it. I do not have the option to click on "verify disk permissions" or "Repair Disk Permissions".
Should I clone the hard drive in the target disk mode??
I'm not the best at this stuff so any more advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • How do I share Mac music and photo files when in Windows Bootcamp mode?

I have a new iMac with a terabyte of storage that includes about 30 gigs each of iTunes music and jpg photos. I need to share them to the Windows Bootcamp environment so I can wirelessly stream to them to a DLink DSM 320 media server connected to an AV system located in another room. When in Bootcamp Windows the the 320 can "see" the Windows machine but cannot find any media.
So the question is, how do I share files between Mac and Windows when in Windows Bootcamp?
A better solution would be to directly connect the Dlink when in the Mac environment but I have not been able to find software to do that (the Dlink product is for PC only.) If anyone knows of such software that would be great too.

Windows needs third party software to see files on the MAC OS extended FS. I've heard MacDrive does this.

  • When I restart my computer and hold the option key after creating a bootable usb with windows 7 and partitioning only the original partition shows up. Not the windows one or the bootable usb.

Okay so first things first this isn't the newest macbook pro. When I open about my mac and go to system report it says it is a Macbook Pro 3,1 and the Boot Rom Version say MBP31.0070.B07. Originally when starting up Boot Camp Assistant there where only two options, the "create windows 7 bootable usb" was not there at all. So after some editing and helpful tutorials I was able to get the option show up and created a bootable usb with windows 7 and downloaded the support software onto a separate flash drive. Finally I did the last step and created a second partition for windows. Once the process is complete my computer automatically restarts.
This is where the problem is. Once my computer makes the booting up sound it doesn't load up windows it gets stuck on a apple logo as if it's trying to reastart normally and can't. So I shut down and this time I hold down the option key during start up. It brings up the main partition and some recovery thing but no windows partiton and no bootable usb.
I forgot to mention that I am running OS X 10.9.3. Okay any body want to help me out? Iv'e been at this for hours and can't get an inch closer to having windows. Please and thank you!
P.S. If I missed a discussion that answer my question just point me to it. Iv'e been looking for a while, but who knows i might have missed one.

The only known way to make it work on an external drive is by first installing Windows onto an internal drive, then cloning the install to an external Thunderbolt drive. Thunderbolt is seen as an extension of the internal bus, so Windows doesn't see it as an external device.

  • Creative Cloud on Mac OSX and Windows Bootcamp on the same machine.

    Hello,
I am looking into getting 3DStudio Max which is a Windows only program but will need to flip flop between 3DSM and Photoshop.  I am wondering, can I install my Adobe apps on both Operating Systems so that I can have them on my regular Mac OSX for normal work and in Windows Bootcamp for when I do 3D renderings?  I rather not use a Virtual Machine considering both of those programs are going to take a lot of RAM already.  Adding another program to that mix I feel will just overheat/slow down my machine.
Thank you for your thoughts and time,
    Sarah

that's interesting.  it may be a problem, but give it a try.
just open your bootcamp windows, navigate to https://creative.adobe.com/ and start downloading ps.  a cc desktop app will download to your bootcamp windows and hopefully you ps will work on your bootcamp windows.  i don't see any reason why it would stop working your mac, but that will count as your two installations so you will not be able to install on another computer.

  • My backup drive is no longer bootable after TimeMachine backup to it. Why?

When I purchased a Lacie Porche 350 GB Firewire drive, I partitioned it properly via Disk Utilities and backed up my entire Hard drive using SilverKeeper to one of the two drives created by partitioning, resulting in an OS 10.4.10 Tiger bootable drive. Which I tested and it booted up perfectly. The day prior to upgrading to Leopard OS, I used SilverKeeper to back up everything on my hard drive again, since there were a lot of system software, security, also software programs and utilty updates on board since mm initial backup. Afterwards, I checked out the bootability of my back up drive (partition), which again worked perfectly.
After installing Leopard, TimeMachine recognized and asked if I wanted it to back up my hard drive (with Leopard O)S to the same (it recognized) named backup drive (partition) and I clicked yes. TM's backup of my entire hard drive went quickly and without a hitch. I knew TM's backup was not a bootable type, but figured that I still had a bootable Tiger system on the same drive if I needed to use that in an emergency and decided to test that out again.
Was wrong! Previously bootable drive no longer showed up in Startup Disk to select from in System Preferences. Thus no longer bootable! I now have 2 full backups of my entire hard drive (one with Tiger, the other with Leopard) on the one external drive, neither are bootable. Guess I can boot up from the installer DVD in emergency, but that wasn't the reason why I made a bootable backup drive to begin with.
Don't know if and what TM did that rendered the formerly bootable drive unbootable. Did nothing to change the previously working bootable drive. Anyone else have similar experience after running TM? Idea of cause? Suggestions, or work-a-round? Is this a known issue, or should this be sent to Apple's Feedback?
    Thank you kindly,
    superush

The TimeMachine backups were made to the same bootable clone partition that the Tiger bootable clone is on mentioned in my original post. The bootable clone was backed up there via SilverKeeper, which is included in the software that came with the 350 GB ,LaCie Porche external firewire drive.
Am now thinking that perhaps that version of SilverKeeper, which was recognized by my OS Tiger, may not be recognized by Leopard OS, and when used TM to make backup to same partition cloned bootable drive, that may have made my bootable SilverKeeper backup clone null and void.
    Could that be the possibility?
    Best regards,

  • The touch screen on my nearly brand new Pavillion lap top running windows 8 no longer works.

The touch screen on my nearly brand new Pavillion lap top running windows 8 no longer works.  Cant use calibration tools as there's no response to touch.  No option in control panal to turn on or off touch capability.  I have no computer background so cant really get to technical.  Is something simple turned on or off located in some mysterious place?  F key or something?   Bad machine?  Thanks for any input.  Sarah

I found the driver at the above link.  I installed the driver, disabled my graphics card and rebooted.  The touchscreen worked.  Then I enabled the graphics card.  So far so good.  Hope I dont have to do this routine too often.
    Good luck with it.

  • Windows 7 no longer recognizes or allows ASIO drivers for my usb audio interfaces

Hello All, last year I purchased a new version of Propellerheads Reason and the  Balance digital audio interface that came with the bundle.
Everything was fine it all worked well, especially when I added asio4all drivers. (The Balance comes with its own asio driver).
Super low latency on my keyboard and midi guitar.  I was using my midi guitar and set up at jams for several months last year and it was great!
One day I was getting ready for the jam session and I noticed that the latency on my midi guitar became so bad that I could not play in time with the other musicians.
I checked out the preference/audio page in Reason and saw that my asio drivers were missing! I immediately went and down loaded asio4all again and installed it. It would show up in any of my music software. I have tried removing and re-installing
the stock ASIO driver that came with Balance and no luck.
I suspect that shortly before this  huge problem ( my music software is basically useless without asio drivers) I allowed a windows update to my system.
I think that somehow during one of these "updates" something changed and windows 7 no longer allows asio drivers on my computer. This really sucks!
Is there some way to get rid of the offending "update" that ruined my music system?
    Thanks in advance!
    Don

Thank you for your response  FangZhou Chen, unfortunately this problem started last fast, possible early November so I can't do a restore that far back.
    my best,
    Don

  • Windows Machines No Longer connecting to Shares

Has anyone experienced issues with their Windows machines no longer connecting to Shares on the server. I have a Windows 7 machine and a Windows XP machine that were connecting to the Shares without any issue. Then this morning they just stopped connecting. I can ping the server both through its name and through its IP address from those computers but when trying to map a network drive all I am told they cannot find the server to connect. I have set all the appropriate security settings on both machines as suggested in numerous articles. SMB is turned on for the server.
I have made no changes to the server in the last 24 hours other than to turn off file-sharing and turn it back on to address an issue with Time Machine backups not occuring due to image being locked in use.

i have a vaguely similar issue, where my server is a member of the domain(workgroup on mac) - suddenly no users from the domain show in users panel,
and connections are not accepted... 10.8.3/server 2.2.1

  • Windows 7 No Longer Recognizes The .zfsendtotarget File Extension

My Windows 7 no longer recognizes the .zfsendtotarget file extension as of a few days ago. I don't know what happened or how to fix it other than possibly going back to an earlier point, which I cannot do due to all the progress, which will be lost.
Besides, there must be a more intelligent course of action.

    Hi DJjarak,
I just write to check your issue's status. Did it resolve?
