Windows CAL server 2003 and Domain Server with a 2008 server as domain member

We have a Windows Server 2003 as domain controller with 70 user CALs, and we have added a Windows 2008 R2 OEM with 5 users licences.
I have no plans to migrate my domain controller 2003 to 2008 but the 2008 is a member of the domain and I need to know if we are fine with the licences.
Thanks for your help,
Alejandro Sueldo

Hi
You need CAL for anything that would access the 2008. If a server that is accessed by only 5 user you are ok, but if like a Exchange for your 70 users, then you have to buy more CAL. (that link explain it good;

  • Standalone windows services as opposed to Domain Member

    Hi
I know very little about windows networking, and have a basic question.
I have a school network with mostly macs, and a 10.4 server. There is also a windows server on the network that someone else comes in to maintain that supplies all the windows needs, but they know very little about macs.
All I want to do is allow access to a shared folder between teachers and students on the mac server to the teachers that use windows machines.
I am wondering if I should should use the Standalone Windows server option or the Domain member role in the windows server section of Server Admin?
I have briefly tried the standalone option, and it works fine, but am not sure if it will cause disruption to the windows machines and I should use the Domain Member role.
Apples OSX server guide only mentions how to set things up in relation to other Mac servers, not windows servers on the same network.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks
    G5 2.3G   Mac OS X (10.4)

    >I wondered if I used the Standalone server option whether it may cause any kaos in the windows camp.
Well, in my experience, there's always some chaos in the Windows camp, but that's not the point here
If you're assigning users the same username and password on both the Windows and Mac directories then you shouldn't have much of a problem. If course, this means that you need to add accounts in both places, delete accounts in both places and when you change passwords, change them in both places. If you're happy to deal with that then there's no problem in keeping the Mac as standalone.
On the other hand you could join the Mac to the Windows directory and then the Mac would automatically use the user credentials defined on the Windows server. You'd only need to add users in one place, change passwords in one place, etc., etc.
Whichever way you're happy with is fine.

  • Saving from Windows Microsoft Word 2003 and ACL !

    hi
    the situation:
If I save directly from the Word to a Network-drive I get a strange behaviour of the ACL's !
the file get added ACL 'Users' and an other 'Everyone' the from the parent folder inherited ACL tbsxuser will be tripled !
If I copy the same file from the desktop to the Network-drive the behaviour is like expect !
    OSX Server 10.5.5
    WIN XP SP2
    Microsoft Word 2003 SP3
    any solution for that

    Hi!
I have the same problem with Office 2007. On a share I have set ACL "Domain Users Read/Write" to propagate to all directories. The POSIX rights are set to "rw" for owner/group/others. When I save an Excel file to the shared directory, the following happens:
    - POSIX rights are all turned off to none
    - the creator, Users, and Everyone will get ACL entries (read/write, read only, and read-only)
    - Domain Users ACL is present 4 times
After the next save the Domain Users ACL is present 10 times, one more time and there are 22 entries.
It is clearly a problem with Office. Notepad doesn't change the file permissions. I have not yet tried different locking settings. Currently both strict and oportunistic locks are set on.
Also I'd like to add that this strange behaviour happens both on 10.5.6 and 10.4.11, I just tested this.
I think it would be good to be able to see if the same happens on a Windows Server share but I need to figure out how to test it. File Properties in Windows Explorer doesn't show multiple ACLs even though Mac Server Admin shows they are there.

  • Windows 8.1 erasing and changing files with chkdsk on external drives. Unnaceptable.

I work for IT support for a small production studio.
They use Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 for they workstations and linux on the rendering farm.
There is an automated system with a nas to make backups of the production assets and renderings.
They have ESATA ports on all the wokstations and use external hard drives to make backups of users files, each user has the responsability of make his /her own backup of personal files (or files from his computer that belong to production like photoshop
patterns, brushes, licenses, rendering tests, plugins, etc).
A week ago the main hard drive of one of the workstations failed.
No problem. New, hard drive, fresh windows install, activation, production software, licenses from license server.
But at the time of restoring the files, the external hard drive of the user contained only old files, and some new but not all. At first time, the user was blamed, but hw swears that he backedup his files. Two days later another user complained that is disk
contained only the old files and his past backup was lost. I was called for help.
After several tests i was able to reproduce the problem:
Windows 8.1: Plug an external disk, make backups, copy new files erase old files, etc, eject the disk using safe removal.
Windows 7: Plug THAT DISK, erase files, copy new files, make backups etc.
Now here comes the problem: PLUG THAT DISK ON ANY COMPUTER WITH WINDOWS 8.1. A few seconds later windows reports that the disk had problems but some corrections were made and everything is ok. IT'S NOT. Any file copied from the prevous backup
is erased (or now it has zero size) and previously erased files are there again. Some of these files are corrupted now but windows says that the disk is OK.
-All the Workstations are up to date with a WSUS (as far as i know).
-The external hard disks are OK (even i used a new formated disk attached to an itnernal port to reproduce the problem.
Moving the backup disk between Windows 7 workstations is ok.
Moving the backup disk between Windows 8.1 workstations sometimes triggers the problem.
Moving the backup disk from a windows 7 workstation to a Windows 8.1 workstation ALWAYS triggers the problem.
Windows 8.1 automatically triggers chkdsk and autorepair the disk a few seconds after insertion unless the user has the disk busy, in that case pops an alert for resterting the computer, and again erases new files and undelete old ones.
First time in my life i see windows doing something like that to a healthy external hard drive.
The event viewer is filled with chkdsk errors like the 26226 and 26228.
We need a solution and i need an explanation of why this behaviour.
Thanks and sorry for my bad english.

    Hi  Artag,
I want to know what kind of hard disk is that ? A GPT format or MBR format?
According to your description,  the GPT format hard disk might not be detected by a computer with a MBR format hard disk, vice versa, so, I suggest to check the disk format by plugining the hard disk to a bootable Windows 7 system, then:
In the Disk Management console, on the View menu, point to Top, and then click Disk List. The upper pane displays a list of disk drives that specifies the partition style in the last column.
The details about the get disk format steps and information about GPT format, you can find it below:

Besides, a screenshot will be helpful for solving this.

  • Creating Deskband for Windows 8 using C++ and its communication with C++/Qt application

I've already found described way of creating deskbands here -- http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc144099%28v=vs.85%29.aspx and respective sources on SDK like https://github.com/theonlylawislove/WindowsSDK7-Samples/tree/e8fe83b043727e71f5179da11fc6228475e7973c/winui/shell/shellextensibility/deskbands
But can't find any simple and straight article on how to use it for example in/from Qt-written application.
Can someone recommend any resource where I can find way to implement own deskband for own application, please.
    Thanks.

There is no API for creating or showing menus on desk bands written by others, with the exception that a task bar button representing an application
written by yourself, in that case you can use the Windows 7 Jump lists API (right click menu) or WM_SYSCOMMAND (shift+right click menu) to control the context menu of your own application. How other
deskbands handle menus are completely up to their authors.
A deskband is an in-process COM server which means you must build a 64 bit version if you want to use it in 64 bit Windows Explorer.

  • Windows 8.1 Deploy and Capture stops with no error

I have a standard deploy and capture TS for Windows 8.1 using the volume media 'install.wim' file.
The only modification I have made is to add a few applications into the TS.
Once started from WinPE, the TS goes smoothly, deploying the OS and the applications. It then restarts and just goes to the login prompt. The TS doesn't continue as expected, rebooting to WinPE and running the capture.
I've checked the smsts.log file and I cant see any obvious errors or anything that could cause this behaviour. The only warning I can see is 'Active reqeust handle is empty, registering with new active request handle' though I'm not sure if this is even
    related.
So the process I see is:
    Boot to PXE WinPE
Select build and capture TS for windows 8.1
    Install OS
    Install Apps
    Restart
    Login screen
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Where can I complain that Microsoft destroyed the Windows XP search feature and replaced it with an inferior/deficient one?

Oftentimes, the searcher simply says (in under 1 second): 0 Items.
I happen to know that there are MANY matches in that particular folder.
    There is no disk access.
It seems that Microsoft -always the visionaries- found a way to place a whole disk filesystem in my limited RAM.
    TIA

    Hello,
Instead of complaining about the search function, which actually works very well, once configured correctly, I'd ask about it in the
    Windows forum on Microsoft Community.
    Karl
So you are criticizing my post, Karl???
Should Microsoft get rid of this particular forum, then?
I guess you could say that I am criticizing your post, while trying to be helpful.
This forum is designed to get advice on where the best place is to ask a question.
You want to complain, I suggested that instead of complaining, which so many do, perhaps a better way to get help is to ask for help.
Remember, 90% (or more) (and NO, I don't have proof) of the people here are volunteers, freely giving their time to help others.

  • Biztalk 2013 R2 with Windows Server 2003 R2 Domain Controller

Hello, I have a client right who has a Windows Server 2003 R2 domain controller with active directory installed. Is there any reason why I can't install Biztalk 2013 on a Windows Server 2012 R2 box and add it to that farm to use active directory?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Adam

BizTalk Server is only going to use the User Groups created in Domain Controller so ideally i don't think there will be any compatibility issue. Also there isn't any microsoft article which talks about BizTalk compatibility with respect to domain controller.
You will have to create all the Windows Groups and User Accounts in AD, before BizTalk Server configuration.

  • Compatibility Exchange Server 2003 SP2 and Domain controllers Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi all, I have this scenario:
    - Two Domain Controllers Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2
    - Two mail servers Exchange Server 2003 with the following version:
      6.5 (Build 7638.2 Service Pack 2)
I want to upgrade my domain controllers to Windows Server 2008 R2.
My question is whether exchange Server 2003 6.5 (Build 7638.2 Service Pack 2) is supported with Domain Controllers Windows Server 2008 R2.
Can you tell me some official Microsoft website where this reflected?
    regards
Microsoft Certified IT Professional Server Administrator

Exchange Server 2003 SP2 supports DCs running Windows Server 2008 R2. These DCs should be RWDCs and not RODCs:
Exchange 2003 SP2 will now be supported against writeable Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory Servers.  Additionally, with the General Availability of Exchange Server 2010, and those looking to standardize on Windows
Server 2008 R2 we have enhanced the supportability of forest and domain functional levels up to Windows Server 2008 R2.  This change is effective immediately on Exchange 2003 SP2.

    Jason B. Allen

    Hi Jason,
According to your description, you want to assign the OS-level management and Domain management rights to two groups separately, right?
Based on my research, members of Server Operators group don’t have sufficient rights to install updates for Domain Controllers, you can refer to this article below:
    Default groups
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756898(v=WS.10).aspx
You can configure Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications group policy so that non-administrative users will be able to install all optional, recommended, and important updates content for which
they received a notification, except some updates which contain User Interface, End User License Agreement and so on, which still require domain admin credentials.
To enable non-administrator users the ability of logging onto and shutting down DCs,
Allow logon locally and Shut down the System rights should be granted.
In addition, reading logs and monitoring server performance rights are included on Performance Log Users and Performance Monitor Users groups.
    More information for you:
