Windows cannot be installed to this disk... but HDD works

Hi All, I have an issue with the internal SATA HDD in my Pavilion dm4t laptop (PR #: XQ1313AAR). The drive is working, when connecting via external USB enclosure is recognized by the PC, can read/write data, format partitions etc… When plugged in as internal HDD of the laptop, BIOS does not recognize it. When booting from Windows Installation Disk, the drive (and its partitions) are recognized, but I get the following message when trying to select a partition to proceed with Windows install: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer’s hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk’s controller is enabled in the computer’s BIOS menu. Used external USB enclosure again, connected to a working PC and using TestDisk, I deleted the partition table (by zero writing it several times), then created a new MBR. When connecting back as internal drive, it is now recognized by BIOS and in the Windows installation screen, I can actually select a partition on the drive to install Windows on; the installation actually runs, but as soon as I get to the point of having to restart the PC during the installation process, upon restart the drive is not recognized anymore… When I remove it, and repeat the same steps with TestDisk, it once again works, can start Windows installation, but it fails upon restart. I have already read numerous forums on the topic, have tried various drive utilities. I also saw in one of the forums a suggestion to enable AHCI for the SATA controller, but the laptop BIOS is extremely limited and does not have that option. Please help!!! Have been without a working laptop for several weeks and is driving me crazy. Saving any data on the drive is not needed – I have recovered all data from it that I need. So my only objective is to restore the harddrive to fully working state and be able to install OS on it (Windows 7, 64-bit)! Thanks in advance for any help!

I've tried many things already, spend countless hours on this and still no luck  What seems to get me at least a step closer:- Boot using Windows 7 Install DVD-Go to Repair Computer and open Command Prompt-Run DiskPart, Clean the disk-After restart am able to create partitions on the disk through Windows 7 Installation and install Windows-As a last step of Windows install, it reboots the system, and upon reboot drive is not recognized - goes again into booting from DVD and starting Windows installation from scratch... When following the installation steps, this time it does not allow to go through with the installation stating that "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu." When in diskpart and using Detail Disk command, I see that disk is NOT bootable. Could that be causing the issue and how can it be solved?

Hey Im getting the following error when trying to install windows from a USB.
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disks."
I installed the windows 8 (64bit) iso using boot camp to a usb.  I was able to do this after changing the info.plist to allow me to place the iso on the usb.  After I make the partition and start the install, I get the above error.  I formatted the partition in the installation but I keep getting this error.  I've repreated the entire process but i keep getting this errror and the disk utility says my partition is a Windows NT File System (NTFS) so im not sure what's going on.  If you can help me that would be greatly appreciated

I am having the same problem. Windows is trying to install. It identifies the various partitions but says that I cannot install Windows on the Boot Camp partition or any other. I select Drive options (advanced) and Format the Boot Camp drive, but it makes no difference.

  • No more optical drive and windows 8 issue: "Windows cannot be installed on this disk as it has an MBR partition table."

I have an Early 2011 13" MBP going strong with an SSD and original HDD installed in the optical drive. However, having had success with windows 7 on my old HDD I was planning to install Windows 8.1 (from .iso) on my SSD. However, for the past day or so it's been a nightmare.
I tried the official procedure but by editing the bootcamp info.plist so I could boot from USB (you can't install windows from an external optical drive apparently) partitioning as bootcamp wanted too.
I then tried it a number of different ways using disk utility etc and with an empty space
However, I always seem to end up with the error "“Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only installed on GPT disks“
I read some interesting stuff here http://www.royhochstenbach.com/installing-windows-8-1-on-a-2013-mac-pro/
    He points out that
"Windows 7 and 8 in x64 support EFI. Normally if you install Windows on a Mac and use the installation DVD, it boots into regular BIOS mode, thus can be installed on an MBR partition. I tried the same, but since the Mac Pro doesn’t have an optical drive I had to use an external drive. And apparently the Mac boots external optical drives in EFI mode too. The Bootcamp wizard is aware of this, and creates a GPT partition on a non-superdrive Mac but an MBR partition on a superdrive Mac."
This means Bootcamp is essentially making the wrong type of partition?
My real question is? How do I install it windows 8? I'm really on my last legs!
I really don't want to have to open this thing up and reinsert my optical drive as its really really difficult to get out of the enclosure (would probably have to break it).
    A huge thanks in advance!

    Hi,
    Have you tried that suggestion?
You also could use this commands to check and install again:
Inside windows installer, hit Shift+F10 to get a command prompt, then run diskpart and type List disk to displays a list of disks and information about them, such as their size, amount of available free space, whether the disk is a basic or dynamic disk,
and whether the disk uses the master boot record (MBR) or GUID partition table (GPT) partition style.
and then select the target disk. Zap the drive (with the clean command), create GPT table (new gpt), create the GPT-EFI special partitions.
Step-by-step instructions is here for reference:
HOW TO: Use the Diskpart.efi Utility to Create a GUID Partition Table Partition on a Raw Disk in Windows
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297800?wa=wsignin1.0
Then reboot so the firmware finds those partitions and adds the disk to the EFI-native boot order (Windows installer checks this).

  • Windows cannot be installed to this disk 0. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI system, Windows can only be installed on GPT disks

    Hi All,
I have been trying real hard to install Windows 8 on my Macbook Pro early 2011 model. I followed the instruction given by Bootcamp word to word, all things went very smoothly untill I was asked Windows Setup Instaled to selct the Hard drive. Here's the error:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk 0. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI system, Windows can only be installed on GPT disks...."
Let me know guys what should I do?
    Thanks,
    Attiqe

You have started the Windows 8 installer in EFI mode, and you don't have to start in EFI mode on a Mac because your Mac emulates a BIOS and a MBR partition table in order to install Windows in non-EFI mode.
To start the Windows installer, hold the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting and have a look at all the boot options you have. You should see two with a DVD above and they must be named "Windows" and "EFI Boot". Choose the option with "Windows" and follow the steps to install Windows. Note that you have to format the "BOOTCAMP" partition from the installer to be able to install Windows.
If you are trying to install Windows from a USB drive, note that your computer isn't compatible to do it

  • OS X 10.8.1 update cannot be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.

    HI
I had installed mountain lion on my MBP 13" early 2012, but it has lots of issue, when i tryed to up date to 10.8.1 it shows the error "OS X update cannot be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update"
if i run the software update nothis is showing, current os version is 10.8

This did not work for me.
Note, that at one point the Apple developer knew exactly what the problem was and decided not to let us know. If we were tole what the problem was we woud have an idea of how to proceed.

I am trying to install a registered copy of Photoshop Lightroom that I never installed on my Apple iMac with software version 10.10.
I get the message “Adobe Lightroom 1.  Cannot be installed on this disk because a newer version of this software already exists on this disk”
If it is here – I cannot find it anywhere, and I don’t believe that I ever installed it.
I have ordered the upgrade to Lightroom 5.0 and figured that I should install Lightroom 1.0 first.
How can I solve this problem

Actually when LR 5 starts for the first time after it is installed it will have a dialog to Buy, Try or Enter a serial number. You select Enter a serial number and enter the LR 5 serial number first and then because it is an upgrade serial number it will ask for the serial number of a Previous version. You then enter the LR 1 serial number.

  • Satellite A110 does install from recovery disk but HDD not displayed

    Hi guys,
after searching the net I've finally found a forum in which I hope you can help me.
I've tried to search this forum for an anwser but couldn't find it.
I have a toshiba satellite a110 -159 which after a sudden stop didn't boot up.
chkdsk did discover a lot of problems when I connected the hard drive to another pc, but the laptop still couldn't boot from the disk.
anyways, I copied the most important data and remounted the disk in the laptop. with the product recovery discs I managed to reinstall windows xp media center installation, but after the first reboot, the laptopt didn't find the hard disk, it is not displayed in the bios.
strange though that the recovery discs did install... anyone knows how to relist the hard disk in the bios? it was listed there before the reinstall of windows xp mc... :( so it's like it did something with the bios or so.
hope you guys know what's wrong with this one.
    thnx in advance!
    Edit:
the disk is accessible when placed in another system or desktop system with convertor, and copies and works just fine.

    I've solved it
opened the laptop and shortened the battery located on the motherboard (couldn't detach it because it was soldered).
the short reset the bios and it found the disk again
very weird though, but it works all fine now.
hope this helps anyone else if they got the same :)

  • Windows can't be installed to this disk. FM2-A55m-E33 board

I finally got past getting windows 7 64 to start the install menu. I had to setup a UEFI flash drive to install windows 7 off of. Now my problem is that I cannot install it lol. I have two exact same drives setup for raid. When you goto windows 7 setup you only see one drive and it says windows cannot be installed on this disk. I went into bios and enabled raid mode. I really don't know what else to do. Any help would be nice.

I did goto the bios and set it to raid mode then selected uefi option. AFter that i went to the uefi screen and did the cfgdrv option or whatever it was called lol and setup raid 1 with the two hard drives. Rebooted then notcied the drive raided drives were not listed in windows installer, chose the raid drivers off thumb drive and now the drive is listed as a single drive. Then i get the message about not being able to install to the disk, it might not be set as bootable disk(something like that). I'm really sorry I don't have perfect descriptions.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi xhoffman,
This error can occur when you try to install Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 on a system if the following situation is true on your PC:
You are installing by using Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM media.
Your system has an Intel storage controller that is configured to "RAID" mode in the BIOS. (This is a standard setting for many PC manufacturers).
The hard drive you are installing to an "Advanced Format" disk.
Please check your installation media and BIOS drive settings or download the appropriate drivers for your hard disk drive.
You could also check your setupact.log and setuperr.log for more failure details

  • How to reinstall Mac os x 10.5.6 to my imac desktop 24 inch all in one i put in disk and held c down and it came to a message saying os x cannot be installed on this computer HELP?

Ok here lately when i came into my office and go to cut on my imac desktop 24inch all in one it would come up to a white screen with a grey folder with a question mark blinking in the center of the screen well i just want to reload the machine but when i put my Mac os x install dvd that came with it into it you gets past the folder blinking to the screen where it has the Mac os x installer bar at the top but in the middle of the screen in says Mac os x cannot be installed on this computer and has two buttons one that says ok and the other that says restart how can i get this to stop giving me this error and get to where i can just reinstall the os PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand, while you may have knowledge with PCs you don't have the diagnostic tools available to you to professionaly diagnose a Mac. Apple does not make those tools available for the general public, they are only available to Apple and AASPs. To install the OS on the machine you need to locate the original 10.5.x install disc that shipped with the machine and insert it into the SuperDrive. Below are Apples instructions for setting up the machine:
    Turn on the computer.
Insert the Mac OS X Install DVD into the optical drive, or insert the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive into the USB port.
    Restart the computer.
Press and hold the "C" key while the computer starts up. The computer will start up using the Install media. Alternatively, press and hold the Option key at startup to select the volume containing the installer.
If your are using a wireless mouse, a mouse icon should appear asking you to turn the mouse on so that the computer can discover it.
Select a language, then press the right arrow key.
Click the Utilities menu, the choose Disk Utility.
Select a volume to erase (usually called Macintosh HD).
    Click the Erase tab.
Click Erase... Important: This step will completely erase your hard drive. If you have installed Microsoft Windows using Boot Camp, or have multiple partitions, this procedure will erase the partition you select.
A dialog box appears asking if you want to erase the partition: click Erase.
After the partition is erased, choose Quit Disk Utility from the Disk Utility menu.
Part Two: Installing the operating system
When the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installer screen appears, click Continue.
When the license agreement appears, click Agree.
Select the disk you erased. It should now be highlighted with a green arrow.
Click Install. A status bar appears on the bottom of the screen while Mac OS X installs.
An Additional Information screen appears, advising you that you operating system has been installed. Click Continue.
An Install Succeeded screen appears. Click Restart.
Part Three: Completing the Mac OS X Setup Assistant
When the restart has completed, a welcome video plays, then country/region selection screen appears.
Select your country or region and click Continue.
Select a keyboard layout and click Continue.
A migration screen appears. If you wish to migrate your data from another Macintosh, see Migration tips and tricks. If you do not wish to migrate, or want to migrate later, select "Do not transfer my information now" and click Continue.
A Wireless Service screen appears if you have wireless services available within range of your computer. Select "On" and click Continue.
If the network is password protected, you be asked for a password when you select it. Type the password and click Continue.
An Apple ID screen appears. This is used to purchase content from the iTunes store. When complete, click Continue.
If you do not have an Apple ID, click Continue to move to the next screen.
A Registration Information screen appears. You are not required to fill this out, but it is helpful if you do. When complete, click Continue and your product registration will be sent immediately.
If Mac OS X servers are available on your network, you'll be asked if you'd like to log on to them. If not, click Continue.
A Create Your Account screen appears. This will be used to create a User Account with Login ID and Password for you computer. You should remember this password. You'll be asked for it when you install new software or perform other administrative tasks on your computer. When complete, click Continue and your account will be created immediately.
A screen to select your user picture appears. Take a snapshot with the built-in camera or select a picture from your Library. When complete, click Continue.
A MobileMe screen appears. Select an option and click Continue.
A Thank You screen appears. Click Go to complete the Mac OS X Setup Assistant.
Eject the Mac OS X Install DVD by dragging its icon to the Trash.
    Good luck.

  • Install Failure: Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1.

I have problem with installation Win7 x64. Installation stops on disk selection with mesage: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information". I tried ICH9 controler in mode AHCI and RAID. Loading intel drivers (Ver:8.7.0.1007 and 7.5.0.1017) gives me masage "Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1." Details: "Windows is unable to install to the selected location. Error: 0x80300001". I can see drives, make new partition and format it.
    Spec:
    CPU: Intel Q6600
    RAM: 4GB
MB: MSI Neo2 FIR (intel P35 and ICH9R)
    HDD: 2x 640GB SATA (empty)

I had the same problem. On a new build, ASUS P8Z68-V/Gen4, I a pulled a WD 1TB Sata HDD from another computer I had and put it into my new computer.  The drive was previously used just as a data drive, not a boot disk. Win 7 didn't want load on it.
    I followed the instructions posted by BenFreefly (although abbreviated slightly) and it worked. For reference, here are the steps;
    1) After Windows gives you the error, hit SHIFT-F10 to get to the command prompt.
    2) From command prompt enter the following commands:
    diskpart
    list disk
select disk 0    (your disk may be a different number)
    clean
    create partition primary
    exit    (exits diskpart)
    exit    (exits command prompt)
    3) Click on Refresh
    4) Windows now sees the disk as a primary disk
    5) Select the disk and click Next.
From there, Windows will extract files and the install will boot several times.
