Windows defender

I have a HP Pavilion Touchsmart 15 Notebook PC, when I do a full scan with Windows Defender it will not complete the scan unless the screen display stays on, if I walk away, after 10 min it goes in to sleep mode or standby mode and the scan does not progress any at all. How do I do the scan with out sitting by my PC for 4 or 5 hours to complete the full scan?

Use the power options to temporarily choose when to turn off the display  for plugged in to never. Don't forget to change it back after the scan is done.
Which operating system is installed?
Windows 8 or Windows 8.1
Windows 7

  • I have disabled all Kaspersky security, windows firewall and windows defender and Itunes still will not update my Ipod touch 4th gen to IOS 5, Helppppp!

I can't get the IOS 5 to work for windows Vista.  I'm running kaspersky pure 2.0, windows firewall and windows defender.  I have turned them all off, I then attach my Ipod 4th gen and I get the "cannot connect to itunes update server".  I ran diagnostics in itunes and it tells me I dont have a internet connection.  I'm on the internet right now, and I DO have a internet connection, but it tells me Itunes says otherwise.  I'm able to send this message on the same pc with internet connection but keep running into this error.  I have now read discussiong boards through apple and disabled all my firewalls, still no luck.  I was able to update the lates version of itunes, and just waiting to get my ipod updated now, please help me.

On the computer you should be able to go to the network properites. Go to the TCP part and unchec the line that says obtaind DNS automatically and check the one that says use the following. Add the 8.8.8.8 and Google other 8.8.4.4.

  • Windows Defender Beta 2 Stops iTunes 6.03 From Installing Completely

    Hey,
There is a bug with Windows Defender Beta 2 and iTunes.
I thought I would tell apple and Microsoft about it. Check microsoft beta newsgroups.
When you install iTunes 6.03 and have Windows Defender Beta 2 running it will cause iTunes setup to error with the following:
    http://img324.imageshack.us/img324/2262/itunesinstallerror5it.png
Clicking ok and install continues like normal and iTunes is installed ok. Have not run into any problems because of the errror in iTunes.
Now after installing iTunes Windows Defender Beta 2 flags its install since its trying to install a service.
    See:
    http://img324.imageshack.us/img324/8954/windowsdefenderbeta2allowerror.png
    And:

So here is to hoping Apple and Microsoft work this out sooner than later.

Katrina--Correct me if I'm wrong but there is no way to turn off the new Windows Defender software (it's the replacement for the Microsoft Anti-Spy beta software). Fortunately, I already had iTunes 6.02.23 installed before I installed Windows Defender earlier this week. I had some big problems accessing the music store yesterday, but I've resolved them. (And I really don't think Defender was causing the problems. I think the music store home page was overwhelmed by people participating in the current contest.) If there's a conflict between Defender and iTunes it helps those of us using both to know this. Then we can figure out troubleshooting solutions to resolve the problem. If we come up with workarounds, it helps everyone on this board, doesn't it?
P.S., I understand Spybot has problems with the newest version of iTunes too. The mini-store is the culprit. I don't think these programs prevent you from using iTunes they just don't like some of the features in the mini store--so they warn you about them.

  • Error Message 0x80073afc trying to open Windows Defender

I was working on my mother's computer and somehow Windows Defender got turned off.  There is spyware all over the computer, on every website popups, ads, highlighted words that lead to websites.  I tried turning on Windows Defender, but I get this
message:  "An error has occurred in the program during initialization.  If this problem continues, please contact your system administrator."  Error Code: 0x80073afc
I would like to know how to get Windows Defender to work properly and to rid my mother's computer of all of this.  I tried system restore and it only goes back a couple of weeks.  I did Microsoft Safety Scanner, and it removed at least 2 viruses.

    Hi McWeid,
According to your description ,it seems that the machine has been injected by virus .
I suggest to run the Microsoft Safety Scanner in safe mode .
To get into safe mode ,restart the machine and keep pressing "Shift",troubleshoot ,advanced ,startup settings ,then restart to choose safe mode with network.
Then we can run "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" or "sfc /scannow"to check the health of the whole system files .
    Best regards

  • Install Windows Defender from Win 8.1 to Windows 7

    Hello.
I would like to use Windows Defender as Corporative antivirus and manage it by powershell cmdlets.
But there is a lot of Windows 7 computers in my network and these cmdlets not work in it.
I've updated powershell on these computers to 4.0, imported Defender module to powershell, but I can't execute cmdlets.
    Result: Invalid namespace.
I tried to replace files in defender folder but it didn't work as well.
Does anybody know if there is any way to update windows 7 defender to 8.1 defender or how can I apply cmdlets to windows 7 etc.

    Hi Niko,
This is not possible. The CMDLets for Windows Defender are new coming in Windows 8.1. They are not applied to Windows 7. Furthermore, the Windows 8.1 defender is quiet different with Windows 7. We just could update the definitions but
not whole applications that only for Windows 8.1.

  • Windows 8.1 store apps aren't running after definition update of windows defender!!!

I am currently running windows 8.1 pro with media centre. 15 days back I installed this update
"Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.189.752.0)"
after which my all windows apps(precisely metro apps/windows store apps) stoped working. Whenever I open such apps they dont get open. Sadly this update not uninstallable. I restored my system to the previous date. and all the apps started working
again. But now yesterday my windows updated again & now again I am in the same situation and this time I am unable to restore my windows as there is not restore point left. :/
Can any body help me out with this? I have scanned my Pc with Kapsersky2014, no viruses are found on system.

    Hi,
Before returning the system to a previous restore point, we can first do some troubleshooting and see whether it KB2267602 that case this issue.
First, I suggest you run wsreset.exe to clear the Windows Store cache, most issues are caused by the cache, then you can also chec other solutions in the link below:

  • Firefox 13.0.1 (Win7 ) crashes after Windows defender update applied

    Windows 7 SP1
    Firefox 13.0.1
Upgraded to FF 13.0.1 with no problems encountered. The next day I restarted the system and installed the Windows Defender definition update released on 6/15 (11.27.2061.0 - KB915597) via Windows Update. After applying the update FF crashed immediately upon starting several times. I rebooted the system - no change. I then applied the restore point created just before the Defender update was applied, rebooted, and was able to start FF normally.

Does it help if you create a new profile or uninstall and reinstall Firefox?
If you reinstall Firefox then be sure to remove the Firefox program folder to remove possibly left over files in it.
You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Thinkpad Yoga - Cant turn on Windows Defender

Just got my thinkpad today in the mail. I went about uninstalling the included Norton antivirus trial with the intention of turning on windows defender. I uninstalled Norton in the control panel and then used Norton's removal tool just to make sure.
When I tried to turn windows defender on in action center nothing happened. No messages or pop ups or anything. After some googling I was able to edit a defender registry file to let me turn it on. When I try to turn it on now the following happens:

I just got a new computer and am preparing my old computer to give to my nephew. The old machine runs system 7 and was running FF 7.0.1. I completely removed Firefox to erase all of my data. When I tried to reinstall Firefox, I began getting this error message.

I have tried shutting down my anti-virus software, to include Windows Defender, but it didn't help. I am running the AVG free anti-virus.
But you still got the message? If so, you didn't get everything shut down. Something has to be giving you that message.
More than likely, it's a false-positive. Happens quite a bit with updates when the AV companies haven't caught up with their definitions.
If you didn't get the message after disabling all your AV stuff, what DID happen?

  • Windows Defender Disabled\Corrupted on Windows 7 Machine, How do I fix?

    Hello Everyone,
I have a computer that has has had Windows Defender disabled/removed/corrupted in some unknown fashion. I searched for the program link from the start menu, which brings up a listing, but the icon for it is not normal. I also checked the Services Console
and there is not a listing there.
I have seen in other forums a suggestion of a repair install, and would like to know if anyone has tried that and had it work for them before I go through the time and effort.
I use Kaspersky security software, and my other computers have the Windows Defender service working at the same time, so it is not a security program disabling it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi ChicagoITguy,
Considering the Windows Defender is not in the Services Console , it may be caused by the files corruption or the missing registry.
1.Run sfc /scannow to have system integrity diagnostic.
2.Check the Windows Defender registry`s existence.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinDefend
3.You may need to restore the Windows Defender registry following the Sabrina`s post of the link:

  • Problem with Windows Defender Service

After restarting my computer running windows 10 build 10041 I got the following message trying to start the service:
The Windows Defender Service service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.
I have Avira AV program installed but Iit's been installed for a while although the above message came for the first time. Any idea?
    Thanks

    To
    markgoldin and
    philgman,
Uninstall your 3rd party anti-virus programs. Make sure no "left-overs" of the AV program remain, Then try to enable Windows Defender.
No too long ago, I was involved in a similar question. The OP had Norton installed. He said that Norton and Windows Defender were working fine in the older builds but not on build 10041.
I asked him to uninstall Norton.
Eventually he did using the Norton Removal Tool to remove everything related to Norton. Then he, after a few tries, managed to enable Windows Defender.
Open the link below and read what had been said in that thread. Hope it will help you.

  • How to permanently disable Windows Defender?

Windows Defender won't stay disabled.  I searched through the threads and saw several others have had this problem but the issue has apparently never been resolved.  I removed Windows Defender from startup using MSCONFIG, disabled it from the GUI
that's accessible through the Control Panel, and disabled the service through the Administrative Services > Services panel, yet the program is still re-enabling itself after every reboot.
I searched around but saw no "Fix-It" articles or anything suggesting that Microsoft has any interest whatsoever in trying to resolve this issue.  Does anyone know of a registry hack or a third-party tool that will knock out Windows Defender
    permanently?

As per the link provided by
    Cyber_Defend_Team it should be disabled...
But in rare case it wont completely disabled.. At this point you can do a registry trick and reboot.. Beforeo ahead backup the registry key ...
1)Then change directory to the location where you have extracted the PSTools.zip
    (Mine it is C:\Users\araa\Desktop\PSTools )
    (2) open registry editor with psexec  with following parameters.. -s -i -d
The command should be psexec -s -i -d regedit
Then registry editor will be opened and navigate to this path
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender]
Double click on REG_DWORD  "DisableAntiSpyware" and
    make that value to 1.

  • Why is Windows Defender telling me to give information about Adobe?

It's telling me to send information to Windows about Adobe after installing a Reader update. What is this?

I am on our enterprise configuration management team and we are using BMC Blade Logic for Client Automation (Marimba) to deliver the msi.  The MSI that we are installing is AdbeRdr11002_en_US.  Marimba simply delivers the MSI and triggers an install.
Reader XI installs just fine, but Windows Defender then pop ups the "submit this to Microsoft" type message which leads me to believe that Adobe just needs to submit information to Microsoft to ignore their product in the defender scan.  I have tried going down the MS support route but so far its been unsuccessful.
