Windows Deployment Services "the specified image file is either invalid or corrupted"
I'm trying to add images to a virtual server running WS08 R2 but the only type of images that get accepted are the vista x86, nothing else works,
I tried the following image files:
windows server 2008 R2
windows server 2008 x64
windows 7 x64
windows 7 x86
windows vista x64
and always the same error: "the specified image file is either invalid or corrupted"
the machine configuration is as follows:
Virtual machine on Hyper-V 2 (host is WS08 R2 Enterprise)
2048 MB RAM
25 GB free diskspace
running these roles:
AD
DNS
DHCP
WDS
hope someone can help
Was a solution for this ever found? I am experiencing the same issue with the following setup:
I am having an issue with a virtualized Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise blue-screening any time I try and add an install image through the Windows Deployment Services mode.
Server:
Lenovo TD200x – 3822-43U
Dual Intel Xeon E5530 CPU’s
Installed Memory: 28.0 GB
Two raid arrays.
Array 1 – 500 GB Mirror – hosting Windows 2008
R2 Enterprise running Hyper-V
Array 2 – 1 TB RAID 10 – hosting Virtual Machines
and Virtual Hard Disks
We have the latest firmware update installed on this physical machine
Our physical server is the Lenovo TD200x machine. On it, we are running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
Within Hyper-V, I am running a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise domain.
Virtual Server 1 is a domain controller running Windows Server 2008 R2. It is configured with roles of: Active Directory Domain Services, DNS,
and DHCP.
Virtual Server 2 is a member server running Windows Server 2008 R2. It is configured with the role of: Windows Deployment Services.
The error is occurring on Virtual Server 2. After everything is installed on this server, and it is setup as a domain member and has the Windows
Deployment services role added, I go through and ad a Windows 7 boot image within Windows Deployment Services with no problem. When I go through and try to add a Windows 7 install image, however, during the creation of that install image, the Virtual
Server 2 pops up an error that reads:
Error occurred while trying to execute command.
Error Code: 0x80070002
After this, the system will immediately blue-screen and reboot with a STOP 0x000000F4 Error
I have tried using various Windows 7 DVD’s and even using the Windows 7 ISO file, mounting it as a drive. All with the same results.
I have erased the virtual server and recreated it with the same results. I have removed the entire domain and recreated both servers with the same results.
I have setup the physical box as a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller and added the Windows Deployment Services role and did NOT have any problems
going about it in that manner. Therefore, the issue lies within running this in a Virtualized server within Hyper-V.

WDS Server 2012 R2 "The specified image file is either invalid or corrupted"
Hi,
I'm trying to setup a WDS in a 2012 R2 environment but I cannot add install image for x64 architecture.
I've managed to add boot images from both x86 and x64 architecture and install image for Windows 8.1 x86.
For everything else I receive the error message "The specified image file is either invalid or corrupted". The images used for setting up the install are 100% functional (I manualy installed the OS from them).
I tried to unconfigure, reconfigure, reinstall role, install on another machine, everything without success.
Thanks!Hi Costache Cristi,
What account you are using when you meet this issue, please use the
domain administrator permission account to import image or please try give your image source everyone full control permission then monitor again, it seems is the permission issue.

Hi,
This is developer from Autodesk. We get this compile error from time to time. This is a sporadic failure. We can't find any issue in our own project.
vbc : error BC31019: Unable to write to output file 'D:\Revit\Dev32\RevitAdditions\Source\..\Intermediate\ReleaseWin32\VBNETSnippets\VBNETSnippets.dll': The specified image file did not contain a resource section.
I find a help doc from the website to try some steps to solve this issue.
Error ID: BC31019
To correct this error
Compile the program again to see if the error recurs.
If the error continues, save your work and restart Visual Studio.
If the error continues, restart the computer.
If the error recurs, reinstall Visual Basic.
If the error persists after reinstallation, notify Microsoft Product Support Services.
My question is what the root cause for this issue. Could you please give us some explanation where the issue should be, VB compiler? .Net Framework?
Visual Studio? Operating system?
Thanks
WilsonHi hitzwx,
Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.
Since this forum is to discuss: Visual Studio WPF/SL Designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help
System, and Visual Studio Editor.
Based on your issue, I am not sure what the root cause for this issue. But I suggest you can try some suggestions so that narrow down this issue.
(1) I suggest you try to create a new simple VB project and then check this issue.
(2) In addition, maybe you see the document about your issue. If possible, I suggest you can try these suggestions to troubleshooting this issue.

I have created a custom capture image in WDS. Now when I try to boot my reference PC into this image the PC hangs at "Loading files". The reference PC is running Windows 7 and I am using Windows Server 2012 Standard on my server.
I have followed the instructions on how to create the custom capture image on the server to a fault. I PXE boot the PC and it shows the capture images after I hit F12. The problem is that it starts to boot and then hangs about 2/3 way through the progress
bar.
Any help would be appreciated.Hi Derrick Logan,

An error occurred while trying to start the Windows Deployment Services server
After rebooting the server, I cannot start the Windows Deployment Services anymore.
It worked perfectly before the reboot. When starting it manually these errors appear in the event log:
The Windows Deployment Services Server service terminated with service-specific error 1460 (0x5B4).
An error occurred while trying to initialize multicast manager. Windows Deployment Services server will be shutdown.

This is on server standard beta 3.I have removed the server from the WDS, then I have uninstalled the role, rebooted, reinstalled the role.
When I started the WDS the server was back in there, but when I wanted to start the service I got the message "the windows deployment services configuration is corrupt". I have triggered these commands to reset this:

Error Description: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
Anyone have an idea what could be the cause? I found this additional error in the event log, but distributed file system hasn't been installed since the beginning.

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.
NOTE: My access is through terminal services.
I received a new server to load my IBM Rational products. I was able to load ClearQuest, Req Pro and ClearCase with no problems. Because this machine is being used as a web interface for the products, I needed to also load Crystal Reports XI along with the embedded report server. Well, I got everything installed but the embedded reports server.
On my attempt to double click on the file that would extract and install the addins needed I received the error message:
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
After some testing I see that if I select any executable associated with installing an application, I get this error.
I've been searching all over the internet for a solution to this proble. Does anyone know why this happens and what I can do to fix it?Ok this will be a long post, and for starters I wanted to point something out to everyone - there is two separate discussions going on in this thread. On one side you have a discussion about servers and people using thin clients or Citrix having this error
code and changing Internet Explorer to resolve this conflict. Then on the other side all the stand alone home users with XP and Vista and 7 trying to figure out what is going on with their install that has the exact same error code. Microsoft in their infinite
wisdom has given this error code to relate to multiple different errors hence the confusion.
Now here is my story, with out a resolution yet.
Ok, so I ran into a real nasty trojan virus, that is now resolved and gone. However, when I went into the process of being able to resolve this issue a sticky byproduct was this permissions issue. This is how it happens, I download a video with Firefox or
any browser Opera, IE whatever. Then after I have downloaded it into the proper location I can see it within the downloads list from the browser, should I double click to launch the video with WMV it will fail with that error "Windows cannot access the
specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item". However, should I open the directory and then launch from the true download location, rather in the list of the files within the browser download list it
will launch fine. This is the problem I can utilize the programs directly launching them from explorer, however should I try and launch a program from inside another program it will fail to launch.
This is a Vista 64 bit installation, and I am pretty tech savvy individual. What I have tried thus far is to take owner ship of the directory since trusted installer was the owner previously. After I had done that I went into the permissions of the exe and
sought to make sure that the file was open for everyone to be able to modify and have full control - it was. After that I also tried launching the browsers as admin privileges to see if it would still launch. It will not it refuses to allow calls to this directory.
That being said it is also a big problem when I use Corel DVD Moviefactory, because this program is trying to launch other programs from this directory to run. So, I need to figure out why is it that I am not able to have programs make calls to this directory
and try and launch exe files and fail, yet the permissions are fine and I can launch them from directly clicking on the item in a directory?
Further clarification as to what happens:
Firefox downloads to Harvester\downloads
All my pictures, movies, executable, rar/zip, reside in this directory "downloads"
In the browser Firefox there is a "downloads" [contrl+J] list that shows what you have downloaded through the browser
All of these items are able to double click and execute from this list with out having to navigate to the "downloads" directory
When executing a WMV file it will fail and error out with the "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item" error.
However, navigating to this directory will allow me to launch all programs with out any problem, the difference is I am launching from the file rather than through a program making a call to the x86 directory to launch the file. If I have an item that doesn't
require a program to launch from the x86 directory it will launch ok through Firefox, ex InfanView, HJsplit, etc.
This is a problem with other programs making calls to external programs residing in the x86 directory like Corel Moviefactory 7. While running it will make the same error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the
appropriate permission to access the item" when trying to make a new DVD, because it utilizes something in that directory an external program.
This happens with Opera as well, don't know about IE I don't use it.
What I have done thus far:
Removed my firewall that was MS native firewall
Removed my anti-virus and malware software - AVG, MalwareBytes, Windows Defender, Windows Security Essentials, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spy cop, and a few others
Went and took ownership of the directory
Tried registry hacks
Altered AVG to exclude the (x86) directory
Re-installed AVG and MalwareBytes to see if I can repair the file
Shared the (x86) directory for everyone and inherited the permissions
Tried CLI restoring of default permissions
Tried to make changes in safe mode still shut down.
This is where I am now....waiting for a scan to end to reboot and check to see if I was able to make any progress. -
We subscribe to a service called "Vault" which provies its documents in encrypted PDFs using the etd format. As well as Digitial Editions we have Acrobat Reader 9 installed on our PCs (Windows XP,SP2). When a user tries to download any of the documents they are seeing the following error:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions to access the item."
However, if they open Digitial Edtions (or have had it open at some point in the past) before they download the document it opens without any problems. We use ZEN works to manage our PCs, and we use something called Dynamic Local User (DLU) which means that when a students logs into a PC the user's local Windows account is created on the fly, and then when they log out it is then deleted. This means that they are effectively using Digitial Edtions for the first time everytime they log into a PC.
As anyone else seen the above error? Also, is there a way of stopping it? What does Digital Editions do the first time it is opened? Are there registry keys that we can add, which emulates the opening of Digital Editions so it doesn't have to be opened first before we can download the Vault documents?
Any advice/tips would be most welcome.Hi
Some required information are needed for us to help you.
Hi NabeelOmer,
We wonder if you have taken any action such as system restore after this issue occurred.
You might also try this command to restore your access control list.
Run this command to navigate to the drive letter, example is D

To reset all permissions, run this command
icacls * /reset /t /c /q
Visual Studio is a very invasive program and which provides the ability to enumerate projects and solutions for system, user should never try uninstalling it manually without any guidance.
Visual Studio made changes for your whole system, if the file has been moved or deleted this error would occur.
Since you mentioned that you get this error almost everywhere even in control panel. We suggest you repair/reinstall your Visual Studio first and check if it could be fixed.

Windows Deployment Services - Capturing Image
To Microsoft Technet,
I am currently a student and I have setup a fully functioning Windows Server. This Windows Server has AD, DHCP, WDS and MDT installed on to it. This server was setup so that we can re-deploy Windows to any of our computer labs and it will just be a fresh
install. My problem is that the students also need to upload (capture) an image of the OS to the server every now and then as part of the coursework. When uploading an image they are presented with this option:
Obviously when you click connect it asks for a username and password so that it can write to the folder. The students are not allowed to know the username and password because if they do then they break the server. They do this because they log on and mess
around with it. I am currently asking if there is a solution so they can connect to the server and it will automatically log them on as the admin.
These are solutions however I feel they would be inappropiate:
- Give them a username that has read / write access but block the logon.
- Allow "Everyone" to read / write thus no logon screen.
However I feel that both are a security risk as students can just join the folder from the network and delete other students work.
Instead I would like the windows server to automatically allow the connection by implementing the logon details. Is there a possible way to do this?
Thanks,
Thomas.
The image is off the internet (I did not make it).Hi thomasjcf21,
Another possible is you can create shared folders for each student and give each student account full control permission, after they finish the OOBE they can upload their
image to WDS server.

When I try to open iTunes, I get this error message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I've been able to uninstall all Apple products except iTunes as I get this error message: "The Installer has insufficent privileges to modify this file: C:\Program Files\i Tunes\Acknowledgments.rtf." I've had the iTunes on my laptop for a year and a half with no problems until now.
Any suggestions please?

Installed FF 16, 17, 18. Will not open in normal administrator login, nor with "Run as administrator" but will in W7 safe mode. Changed permissions (had to do it in W7 Safe Mode, normal login would not allow (logged in as an administrator) could not delete the Mozilla files in normal login. On rare occasions, with a new install, I could get it to open once, then not again. Searched the reg for any mention of Mozilla or FF and cleaned it. Tried FF safe mode, no luck. Checked permissions after taking ownership and propagating full ownership rights to all FF files, many reboots, no luck. Chrome, IE and SeaMonkey work fine. Using a fairly new install of W7 Professional 64 bit, on a Dell Optiplex 990 i7, 16GB ram. Had the same problem with another user on an identical box. No problem on other computers No other program problems.
I should have been a bit more definitive.
I have uninstalled FF, with the windows uninstaller, by manually cleaning the files and the registry of any mention of FF or Mozilla, and by running Revo uninstaller - always rebooting and checking to see if the files are indeed gone. (I have set windows file preferences to see all files, including system files.) I have run 4 AV/malware scanners and found nothing but a few tracking cookies. I download, from Mozilla.org, (http://download.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/18.0/win32/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%2018.0.exe) a fresh copy of the Firefox Setup 18.0.exe each time and install when logged in as an administrator and choose "Run as Administrator". I get the same result each time I try to open Firefox. Consistently does not open, gives the error: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla\firefox.exe Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." This happens even when I run the .exe file from the x86 program directory. I have also attempted to run in XPsp3 compatibility mode to no avail,
I make the following assumptions:
The system is not infected
I am doing clean installs
There is no existing trace of FF on the system
I get identical results on one other W7 64 bit Optiplex 990 system with an i7 processor and 16 GB or ram.
I CAN run in windows safe mode with networking.
I have no other software or hardware issues. -
I'm having issues installing starting the WDS server service on Win 2008 R2, this is happening on multiple (all 2008 R2) systems on this domain so I'm beginning to think it's either AD or network related, in event viewer I get the following error.
'An error occurred trying to start the Windows Deployment Services Server.'
Error Information: 0x0906
EventID : 257
single domain, single forest, 2008 R2 functional level, both system are virtual plugged into same vswitch on a flat network.
any ideas what might be the issue? I've never had an issue getting this working on many occasions before today and I've come to many a dead end looking at other articles thus far...

[4304] 09:22:11: [BINLSVC] Deleted. It seems I've found out the solution myself, the issue seems to be caused when DHCP and WDS are on the same server, The installation must identify this during the first installation of WDS but not on subsequent installations, the method to
get it working again is:
1.
Install WDS Role (using defaults)
2.
Make the following registry change:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WDSServer\Providers\WDSPXE\UseDhcpPorts = 0
3.
Run the following command line to initialize Windows Deployment Services:
wdsutil /initialize-server /reminst:D:\RemoteInstall
4.
Run the following command to enable the DHCP port registry setting
wdsutil /Set-Server /UseDHCPPorts:No /DHCPOption60:Yes -
Whenever i try to access any folder on my computer(Windows 7), it tells me "Windows
cannot access the specified device, path, or file, you may not have appropriate permission to access the item",
this happens even for My
Computer and Control Panel. It's driving me nuts! I'll be honest here, I was trying to uninstall Visual
Studio 2013 Communityfrom my computer by going to Programs
and Features but for some reason, it was getting stuck at "Configuring
Your System". After trying it numerous times, I went to the visual studio installation directory, and removed
the installation files from there. I even removed the files from the C:\Program
Data folder, then i went back to Programs
and Features and tried to remove the listing there, but I got a dialog box saying "you
don't have sufficient access to uninstall visual studio" . I googled this problem and found this solution
(http://superuser.com/a/174198)
then i tried using the solution, I used SubinAcl and
changed the registry permissions as mentioned in the solution and ended up like this!
All the access permissions are set correctly (that's what I can make out...)
Please Help!Hi
Some required information are needed for us to help you.
Hi NabeelOmer,
We wonder if you have taken any action such as system restore after this issue occurred.
You might also try this command to restore your access control list.
