Windows/DOS Command line for Apple Software Update

I have a lab of Mac's and PC's all running iTunes/Quicktime. Is there a windows/DOS command line option to running Apple Software Update on Windows? I dont want to have my systems automatically download updates until after I have had a chance to test them first. At the same time though, I down want to have to visit each system(even with VNC) and install the updates by hand either as I have a way to blast a command at the PC's all at once to do the job.

ok i've sorted it, the solution is you have to put
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Softwareupdate CatalogURL http://servername:8088/
and not
defaults write com.apple.Softwareupdate CatalogURL http://servername:8088/

  • Unable to install itunes 64it, on windows 7, stops at "unscheduling apple software update"

The installation goes on fine, until it begins the "unscheduling apple software update" proccess,  at which point I get a message saying; "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run.
    Any ideas anyone?

When I hit repair for it I get a message saying "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable",
And when I tried uninstall, it occurs exactly as the original error.
So this is probably damage to the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi (or associated gubbins in the Windows Installer Service installation database for ASU).
Let's try clearing away the existing broken ASU, and seeing if that lets us get iTunes in.
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up").
In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp and restart the PC. Download a fresh iTunes installer from the Apple Website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does that install go through any better?

  • HT2305 Annoying requests for Apple Software Update

I don't have Quick Time installed, nor do I want it installed and yet I keep getting bugged to approve updates. How do I get Apple Software Update to only look for the applications I actually have installed?

Nothing at all, I suspect. Just open Software Update from the Apple Menu.

  • Schedule a task on window 7 command line for running a Python script

    I have a Python script.
    1. if I directly run it on the command line: python pythonscript.py it is working.
    2. I want to run it every 30 minutes, I created a schtasks like this:
    2.1 schtasks /create /tn "myTask" /tr "C:\python27\python.exe Path_to_Python_Script" /sc minute /mo 30 /st 08:03
the schtasks itself was created successfully and I think the task was run but I did not see any result come out.
    2.2 schtasks /create /tn "myTask" /tr "python pythonscript" /sc minute /mo 30 /st 08:03 (schtasks command is on the directory of pythonscript)

  • I cannot install itunes 10.5 on my XP laptop, the error says that it cannot create the folder for apple software update as it already exists but there is no sign of the folder, any new ideas?

can anyone help with this issue that comes up during an Itunes 10.5 install on an XP laptop?
i have tried the installer suggestions
    thanks

I was finally able to install this POS.
    Here is what I did:
I tried to install an even older version than 1.5
I went to filehippo.com and downloaded the oldest version I could find there which was the version 1.0.7
Here is the link to that page: http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_air/3853/
Thank God that old version installed on my computer.
After that the installation of current version (2.5) of this POS worked as well.

  • Should I let it install "Apple software update for windows 2.0.2"?

Thanks, in advance... it may just be a ditz of a question.
Running Vista and when in Mac occasionally run Parallels, Apple Software Update window popped and this update appeared:
Apple software update for windows 2.0.2 with the description
"This update includes general fixes and renews the root certificate that authenticates software delivered via Apple Software Update."
I figure it was logical enough considering the obvious link but the description just looked to vague. So, I put it off... today searching the internet, Apple Help and so on for this "update" cannot find it anywhere. I have already had problems with file corruption so "fixing root certificates" unnecessarily is not ideal.
Anyone else know one way or another or just tell it to go away for good?
    Thank you,
    Kylie

I never actually use Software Update excep to tell me there is something (if I hadn't read about it). I go to the standalone downloads. There was one for QuickTime for Windows that you DO want.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
It sounds like Software Update for Windows, and that probably does deserve installing (I use x64 and don't really trust support yet or installers from Apple for now) so I have Apple software update in vista turned off.
I do have the 9-17-2007 2.0.2 "Apple Software Update for Windows" installed.
Why I don't trust Apple: alerts and UAC's are always hidden behind the installer window in front. I just tried to close the windows or dialogue box for Apple Software Update Preferences, it asked for UAC and went black, but I can't even close the box even though all I did was hit "Okay" button. So its 'hung' now.
Apple needs to improve the installer for Vista - a lot. I like not having to type a password every time, that has gotten old after 6 yrs.

  • Apple software update for windows box that pops up changed to diff.language

Hey, Everyone. The little window that pops up for "apple software update for windows" and lets me know when I have an update for itunes, quicktime, etc. has changed languages. Now it shows up in Spanish. My itunes, quicktime, etc. are all in English, as well as my OS (Win XP,SP3) so I don't know how that one application could have changed. Luckily I can understand Spanish but just wondering if there's a way to change it back.
    Thanks!

    Hi Troy,
I had the same issue as you. All of a sudden the Software Update window was in swedish. After uninstalling and reinstalling ASU a few times I realised there was no need for it at all. All you have to do is go to Control Panel, Clock Language and Region, Regional and Language Options, Administrative, and then Change System Locale. I changed mine back to English (United States), restarted and voila, it was fixed! I hope this works for you too.
EDIT: Just noticed you are running XP. I am on Vista but it shouldn't be too different I suppose.

  • Stand alone apple software update

Since updating to itunes 7.4.2 an ew apple software update was included but now the that doesn't work. Is there a standalone apple software update for apple software update for windows?
I get an error message of entry point not being found when I try to sart it

WEll I tried going into Add/remove programs clicked change then repair and that seems to have done the trick for now I restarted and its still ok. I would still like to know if they have a standalone software update though, and could they make one available if not

  • Cant install new itunes because Apple Software update refuses to be removed

i tried to install the new itunes but when i do it says it cant remove apple software update. so then i try to uninstall apple software update by using the remove thing in the control panel but it dont uninstall cause it cant find some file and says to pick a path to the file but the path is right. someone please help ive tried everything i know of

Try downloading and installing the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Open it by going to Start > All Programs > Windows Instalelr Clean Up
Select Apple Software Update in its list and click Remove. That should take care of it for you. You can use this for any other apps you are having trouble uninstalling as well.
    Hope this is helpful

  • Apple software update, reset to Apple?

I have several Macs which look to the local server for Apple Software Updates.
I would like to reset them to look directly to Apple for these updates.
    I've tried deleting com.apple.softwareupdate.plist files
I've tried in terminal using the default command.
I've tried turning off the Apple Software Update service on the server.
But they still try to get the updates from the local servers.
    Am I missing something?
    Any advise would be welcomed.

How did you apply these settings in the first place? Are you using the Workgroup Manager application? If this is the case, the CatalogURL: gets applied at every boot. You can check with this terminalcommand:
    mcxquery -computerOnly -computer 'yourcomputername'
with yourcomputername replaced by the actual name of this particular machine. Look for a row that has "com.apple.SoftwareUpdate" in it. in this case, you have to change the Update server URL in Workgroup Manager

  • ITunes update can not install due to Apple Software Update

When i download the newest edition of iTunes it saves to my desktop. Then i double click it, it asks me the usual (where i want the files installed to etc) then it seems to update, but near the end, it says "The Older version of AppleSoftwareUpdate cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group"
I have tried uninstalling iTunes and installing a fresh copy. It would not let me install, i have tried deleting the entire program files by uninstalling, deleting all files and erasing iTunes from the registry. Also to no avail. i am now stuck with itunes 7.3 which i copied from another computer.
    Can someone please help?

+near the end, it says "The Older version of AppleSoftwareUpdate cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group"+
First head into your Add/Remove programs control panel, find the "Apple Software Update" entry, and then attempt to remove it.
If Add/Remove won't let you uninstall it, or you can't find it in there, or if Add/Remove lets you remove it but you still get the same message on an iTunes install, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Launch the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"), find "Apple Software Update" in the list of programs in CleanUp, select the Apple Software Update entry, and then click "remove".
Now restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • I'm not able to download Itunes.  I keep getting this Apple Software Update message that states "There is a problem with this Windows installer package.  A program required for this install to complete could not be run.  Contact your package vendor"

Not able to access Itunes store anymore.  Just quit working for no reason.  I've tried deleting Itunes and related components from the Control Panel, but when I try to remove Apple Software Update, I get a message that states "There is a problem with this Windows installer package.  A program required for this install to complete could not be run.  Contact your support personnel or package vendor".  Not sure what this message means.  Am I suppose to contact Apple ?  What is meant by package vendor ?

Apparently it's an itunes issue. I just tried to update and got the same issue. Called att to activate my iphone 4s and they say they can do the swap but apple is telling them itunes is down atm.  So will have to wait
