Windows drive no longer available at power up with Option key?

I've done a byte to byte copy of a separate disk drive (320GB) that was my Vista x64 bootcamp drive. (In a MacPro) to a new 750GB drive. After I completed the copy process, I pulled out the 320GB drive and put in the 750GB drive. I hold down the "Option" key during power on and expected to see both my Mac drive and my Windows drive boot option. Unfortunately I only see the Mac now.
If I go into OSX I can see my Bootcamp drive on my desktop (Untitled), can open it and see that all my windows files are there. So what am I missing to get my bootcamp drive to show up during the power on Option process?
Thanks, Rob.

RAID is destination for dmg image file.
But tried it again using a single Mac HD boot drive just to eliminate that possibility. Got the same error:

Since WinClone is freeware, I really wasn't expecting much. Does anyone know of any other tools that will get the job done?
Thanks, Rob.

  • OSX No Longer Default Boot - Have To Boot With "Option" Key

I tried to dual boot my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (running Mavericks 10.9.5) with Windows 8.1 Pro using mac's "Boot Camp Assistant".
Everything went fine until I entered the Windows Set-Up and then had to cancel it (because I can't find my Product Key). Thats fine, I was just trying out the dual-boot feature - I don't care if I cannot get Windows to work.
PROBLEM: Now, every time I restart my computer, I have to do it while holding the Option key, or else I get the message:  No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key
When I hold the Option key, I only have the option to boot into the regular Mac OSX, so Im not sure why it is not booting into by default.
I re-partitioned my HD to not have the Windows partition on it at all, and when I go back into Boot Camp Assistant I do not have the option to "remove Windows partition", but I still have to hold the Option key when I turn on my Mac to actually boot into my OSX.
Basically, how do I make OSX my default boot like it was before (as it is the only one on the HD)?
    Thanks!

Yea, that's the disk that you are supposed to select as startup disk as it contains files that boots your OS X
recovery partition usually has the word RECOVERY labeled on the recovery partition along OS X it's usually labelled
    something like 'OSX RECOVERY'

  • Drive no longer available as TM target in Mountain Lion

With Lion, I had an external drive attached to my Mac Mini Server and used it as a network Time Machine target to backup my laptop.  I just upgraded my Mac Mini Server to Mountain Lion with the Server upgrade and now the drive no longer shows up as a target.
I read through all pages at http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html, reformatted the drive, double-check File Sharing permissions, and it still doesn't show up. It mounts just fine on the client laptop through Finder.  Has something changed in Mountain Lion?

Sounds like the same problem I'm having.  My external drive mounts just fine on my Lion-based machines, but on my Mountain Lion machine it not only will not mount, but when I try to Repair in Disk Utility it tells me:
"Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Since it mounts fine on my Lion machines, I know there's nothing wrong with the physical disk or the filesystem, so I'm not going to the trouble of reformatting and restoring.  Instead I think I'll just "upgrade" back to Lion.
I'm having several other usability issues with Mountain Lion as well.  What gives with this OS, Apple??

  • How to erase a hard drive on a i MAC Power PC with OSX 10.5.8 pre-intel?

I got this i Mac G5 Power PC with a 20" screen (no iSight) and last generation of i Mac repaired.  Capacitors and a power supply did revive my machine and it works fine.  I would like to donate my machine and want to erase the hard drive and make sure that all my personal data is gone.
I have the Leopard disk and I am told that if I booth my machine with the disk while holding the C key then I can go to Disk Utility and erase my hard drive.
Does anyone have a step-by-step approach to guide me through this?
Any help will be most appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Guy

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Firewire Drive shows in Startup Disk -- But not with Option

I just added a new firewire backup drive. It's the only ext. drive attached. I ran SuperDuper to make a bootable clone of my startup drive. The drive shows up in Startup Disk, with the proper OS, 10.4.11, same as my int. drive.
But when I restart and hold down the option key, only my int. drive shows up.
What do you think is going on?

Power PC based Macintosh computers are unable to boot to a My Book external hard drive.
    Question
Why am I unable to boot to a WD My Book external hard drive using a Power PC (PPC) Based Macintosh computer?
    Answer
    Problem:
Power PC based Macintosh computer systems are unable to boot to the following My Book external hard drive:
    * My Book Pro II Edition
    * My Book Premium II Edition
    * My Book Home Edition
    * My Book Studio Edition
Intel Macintosh computers are not affected by this issue and are able to be booted from My Book external hard drives if the partition on the drive has been setup as a GUID partition scheme.
    Cause:
This issue is a Macintosh bug cause by the Mac ROM code of the computer and how it attempts to boot from the first SCSI LUN it detects (LUN 0). In the case of the aforementioned hard drives, the LUN 0 device is dedicated to the button board and safe removal tools of the hard drive case and not the internal hard drive, thus causing booting to be impossible.
    Resolution:
There is currently no resolution to this issue. If a resolution is found by Apple, this answer will be updated with this information.

Unbelievably, they blame Apple for the problem.

  • Booting from a external drive with Option key?

I have made a clone of my MBP's drive via Carbon Copy Cloner.
Now I can boot from USB 2.0 extra drive selecting previousely the startup disk in MBP preferences.
My hard disk has some problems and I want to have an emergency bootup so I have some questions about this:
1-Restart the computer and hold down the Option key until disks icons appear on screen, does't work. It appears only HD (HFS+ journaled) icon and not LaCie USB drive (HFS+) icon why? Any solution?
2-HD with a few bad blocks and volume structure error (other hardware tests passed) can be repaired with reformating and reinstaling OS X?
3-Do I have to format the disk with Disk Utility erase and "zero out data" security options and reinstal OS X from my OS X Installer Disc?
    Thanks for the help

Yes I have a LaCie USB and Firewire external drive.
I can boot from USB or Firewire if I select the drive previousely with startup preferences.
The problem is, when restarting with USB (or firewire) external drive, I can see only the HD icon when hold down the alt key of my MBP.
In your case have you two icons at the startup? Your firewire drive is HFS+ journaled formated ? Is this relevant?

  • Time Machine Network drive no longer available

I have an iomega network drive with 2 TBs of storage.  I originally set it up as my Time Machine (TM) back-up device
and it had been working for several months.  Then it filled up and would no longer do any back-ups.
I changed the back-up device to a USB external, did a back-up to it and then went and deleted all of the old
back-ups on the networkd drive.  Then I tried to switch the back-up device to the network drive again
and even though the network drive is accessible in Finder, it does not show up as a drive option
in the Time Machine preferences.  How do I make it available again.
    I am running OS X version 10.7.5.

    Hi Richard,
Did you delete the older stuff in Finder, or in TM itself?

i see you've got a Packard Bell. could you check something for me? go into your Device Manager (right-click "My Computer", select "Manage", select "Device Manager"), and check to see if you've got a warning/alert message showing up next to your optical drives referencing "code 41".
if you do see a code 41 in there, this post has information on some other techniques that have been getting people past the Packard Bell code 41 optical drive disappearances:

  • Windows partition no longer available on startup disk tool

I can no longer see my Windows XP partition from the startup disk tool.
The WinXP partition was created with bootcamp, and it was visible ok on the startup disk. Now it is no longer visible, although it keeps working if I select the partition at startup using the Option (Alt) key.
I suspect the problem is related to the fact that I have installed NTFS-3g and MacFUSE to make the WinXP partition read/wirte, but I have no evidence that this could be the root cause of my problem.
    Any hint?
    Thanks,

  • Windows XP no longer available?

I notice that Windows XP is no longer provided as an option when purchasing new thinkpads. So if I hate Vista, is doing a manual install of XP myself the only option that I have? Thanks.

Chaucerw,   If your system came with Vista Business or Vista Ultimate, then you have downgrade rights to XP.  You can always call Tech Support and order a set of XP Pro Recovery CD's.  The CDs will restore your system back to an XP factory pre-load.
Please reference the Vista Downgrade page on the Support site.

  • Optical drive no longer available before installing iTunes

Before installing iTunes and reeboting the computer, the optical drive dissapears from the system. It´s neccesary to reinstall the operating system to have access to it.
I believe that Roxio´s Easy CD Creator and iTunes may have any kind of conflict.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

If you have XP you can use this : http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scriptsdesc/xp_cd_dvdfix.htm
but actually, unless you have some compelling need for Roxio I suggest you dump it.
If XP and iTunes can't handle all your burning needs then a program like Imgburn or CDburnerXP can be use in addition.

  • Since I have downloaded IOS5 on my IPAD and synced to my IMac, Safari keeps dropping off before downloading the website, is slow, also an icon which accessed open safari windows is no longer available.  Apps trouble too.  Help?

Since I have downloaded IOS5 on my IPAD2 and synced to my IMac, Safari keeps dropping off before site is downloaded and is slow.  There was an icon that showed how many windows were open on Safari and when pressed displayed them, that has disappeared and apps do not always download.  Sometimes by making several/many attempts, it eventually downloads the website or app, but this is not right.  When trying to dowload any lonks from an email, they simply do not open, it keeps going back to the home screen.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  I only bought the IPAD 2 in June!

Also the touch screen does not seem to be responding adequately.  Thank you for any help you can give.

  • Open Browser Window JS no longer avail off of CD?

    Hello All,
I am making a "Media Kit" CD, and this cd will autorun/show
an html page with links to various pdfs.
Wanted to leave this main html page open, and have the pdfs
open in a separate window, as these press release pdfs will not
    have navigation in them.
However, the Open Browser Window code below is blocked by IE
and its updated security. After saying
YES to "Allow Blocked Content" it worked, but I think this
    would scare my target audience.
Is there another way to accomplish this?

Hmmm - thanks for the reply, and this does indeed appear to
be an issue beyond the Open Browser Window - javasript.
    I forewent the
Open Browser Window, and simply tried to connect to the pdf
via a normal link (to a pdf on my local machine) - no luck /
    nothing happened.
I checked, and I am set up to open PDF's in browser windows
I knew this worked, because it worked for pdfs located on the
