Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro Application Launcher Remote Desktop Services Feed VDI with Windows Store Remote Desktop Client

I wanted to make kiosks which are joined into a domain and set up with an Remote Desktop Web Feed with VDI Desktops (to support Single Sign On and minimize configuration needs on the client side). And I wanted to lock those Clients to launch only the Remote
Desktop Windows Store application. And if somebody clicks on a Desktop Pool then connect to the choosen Pool. But instead of doing this the Remote Desktop application opens the Pool within the old mstsc.exe and right after connecting the OS switches the focus
back to the Remote Desktop Windows Store application. And nobody can work in the office with this configuration.
So how can I correct this problem? Any other solutions? What is the official way to doing this?

Hi,
Based on my test, we cannot associate .rdp files with the Remote Desktop Windows Store App. Therefore, you may have to use MSTSC or configure the setting in the Remote Desktop
Windows Store App manually.

  • Hyper-V as User on Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro

I believe I'm having permission issues when attempting to use Hyper-V on Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro.  Hyper-V seems to install cleanly, and from an admin account I can use the Hyper-V Manager without issue and connect to a running VM.  However
if I attempt to use the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection application from the same account, it reports "You do now have the required permission to complete this task..." And attempts to run either the Manager or the Virtual Machine Connection result
in the same on a standard user account.
Standard wisdom seems to be to add the user account to the "Hyper-V Administrators" group but when I've looked in the Computer Management utility and the group "Hyper-V Administrators" does not exist. I've tried manually adding full
permissions to the WMI interfaces for CIMV2, StandardCimv2 and Virtualization namespaces through the WMI Control Properties interface. I've also added the user to the "Administrator" role for Hyper-V services in AzMan as a long shot.  Beyond
this, I'm not sure where to go next.
The end goal is to be able to run the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection Utility from a non-administrative user. Any advice is appreciated.

Your question might be more general to Hyper-V and not specifically embedded. WE8.1 is Windows 8.1 with lockdown features so there is nothing special. Account level (Administrator vs. non-administrator) does effect what permissions are granted to access
    certain OS features.
Maybe the Hyper-V forum can address the account level -

  • Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro - Start Screen Layout Deployment GPO

We have recently finished signing our Microsoft Customer License Agreement (CLA) for reselling Windows on a diagnostic tool for our industry. We developed our software with Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro from an MSDN source. Installed from MSDN, configured,
put 20 mobile devices in the field for testing, and pushed updates to them. As a part of this we were able to remotely modify the start screen and add new icons for the newly installed software. Now that the MS CLA is complete we have received the official
Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro OPK from Microsoft Ireland and recreated our setup. So far all but one function works as expected. We are finding that we are unable to modify the Start Screen Layout via XML file or any other method as we did with the MSDN setup.
I have reviewed HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion for build and product ID information to find the MSDN install and the OPK install both show the same information other than install date. The DigitalIDs are different though.
We needed the Embedded version for the Unified Write Filter and after being able to modify the start screen layout with our MSDN copy all looked great. After not being able to modify the start screen layout with our official OPK copy of 8.1 we've done additional
searching to find: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/71f0be7a-43af-4ca3-a068-f99b92217e2a/windows-81-start-screen-layout-gpo?forum=w81previtpro Which plainly says that 8.1 PRO is NOT able to do this.
    Is this correct?
If so why might our MSDN installation have worked while the OPK installation does not?
Why wouldn't an EMBEDDED INDUSTRY PRO version not allow for such a simple function? People using this version I would image would require the most flexibility and customizable options versus another, no?
If this advanced and highly modifiable version of 8.1 pro cannot do this then how might it be recommended to accomplish this goal?
Please help as this may soon push our development out much further.
    Thanks in advance,
    Joey

    Hi HVACjoe
For general system start screen control is supported in the Windows 8.1 Enterprise operating system, the Windows RT 8.1 operating system with sideloading enabled, and in all editions of the Windows Server
2012 R2 operating system. Start screen control is not supported in the Windows 8.1 Pro operating system.
As Tripredacus mentioned that Windows Embedded support is not typically handled on the public forums and Microsoft Developer Network distributes special editions of Windows for testing and development purposes, those are not general purpose licenses and
the validity of the key has a time limit, we could not access resources from MSDN for test.
We suggest you look for help from your Embedded Partner or MSDN forum

You could get more information from following link about start screen lay out.

  • Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry pro's FilterAdministratorToken setting affect SQL Builtin\Administrator access

I have an SCCM built Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry Pro image which will be used to deploy multiple Point-of-Sale (POS) platforms.
In that deployment process of the image, which consists of a preinstalled SQL Express 2012 database and the POS application, the application provides a proces that renames the machine to a specific POS register number\name and it also renames the SQL Server
    name accordingly.
In the course of building this image I had changed the FilterAdministratorToken registry value to 1 so I could run iExplorer. Doing so changed the ability of the Builtin\Adminstrator
to drop a d add the SQL Server name.
Is there an additional setting that will allow me to set the FilterAdministratorToken and
still be able to use the Builtin\Administrator to manage\reconfigure SQL?
It seems like this setting is just the opposite effect in SQL of what you would really expect. It allows access in Windows to things like iE but restricts access in SQL.
    Jim

The issue can actually be manage within iE so I do not have to change Windows security settings.
Changing where iE runs via the Tools\Program menu allows iE to run from the Desktop. Changing the
FilterAdministratorToken method allows iE to run from the Start Screen, but imposes other unwanted Windows Security elements such as the SQL security issue. See:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/devschool/archive/2013/08/12/ie-11-won-t-open-in-the-windows-8-1-start-screen.aspx.
Setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\AplicationTileImmersiveActivation control where iE runs from and I assume inherits it permissions

  • Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro in mode shell launcher ?

Whether it will be possible to have the WEI 8.1 pro in mode shell launcher like in WES8 (black screen without desktop) ?

Yes. Shell Launcher is supported in WEI8.1 -
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn195623%28v=winembedded.81%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
As bagira520 points out, you can set shell launcher up in ELM. You can also enable it in an answer file via SIM, but to actually enable it automatically during OS install, you will have to run a power shell script. Discussed here:

The following screen shot is from the same model you have running OS X 10.10.3 and W8.1. If you used EFI boot to force install W8.1, it will not work.

  • Using USB Devices in RDS VDI with Windows 8.1 Scenario

We are currently in a Upgrade Scenario from our old Windows XP/ Citrix XenDesktop Farm to a new VDI Installation. The new Installation is a Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services Collection using Remote Desktop Virtualizaion Hosts on 2012 R2 too.
The VD- Clients are Windows 8.1 ENT and the User Endpoints are HP ThinClients with Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise.
The user connects to his Virtual Desktop via 8.1 Embedded (RDP8.1)
We want all new USB- Drives to map natively in the RDP- Session (RemoteFX USB redirect) so USB- Sticks or CD/DVD Drives are controlled by the VD-Client OS.
We understand, that there are so called "high level devices" which RDP is using per Default. We also know, that there is a GPO that redirects all "other supportet USB devices". That works well for e.g. Webcams, but we want to override the
"high Level devices" policy an simply map a e.g. USB Stick natively to the RDP Destination.
Currently the drive is mapped as a "high Level usb device" and the usb key has no drive letter, cant be formattet or used in other RemoteApp Sessions initiated on the VD- Client OS.
    The Systems we are using:
Windows 8.1 Enterprise - VD Client on HyperV 2012 R2 FO Cluster
Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry Enterprise as ThinClient OS
Windows Server 2012 R2 as Middleware (RDS VDI Collection, Web Access)
    Thank you in Advance

    Hi Chris,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
The USB devices that you would like to use in the remote session must be plugged in before starting Remote Desktop Connection; devices plugged in during the session will not be redirected.
Have you tried to reconfigure the USB device?
Please try to remove that device and reconfigure with use of following command and check whether issue get resolved.
    Set-RDVirtualDesktopCollectionConfiguration –CollectionName YourCollectionName –CustomRdpProperty "usbdevicestoredirect:s:{6bdd1fc6-810f-11d0-bec7-08002be2092f }"

  • HP Pavilion P2-1013w Desktop PC - UEFI Install with WIndows 8.1 Pro RTM causes hang

I have an HP Pavilion P2-1013W Desktop PC with the UEFI enabled bios.
With Windows 8.1 Pro RTM Build (MSDN Download available now from Microsoft - Released September 17th 2013 - Again,. this is 8.1, a.k.a. Windows Blue RTM)
SATA Mode is set to AHCI
    BIOS is UEFI Enabled
I boot from the Windows 8.1 Pro USB Installation Media using the UEFI: USB Storage option, Windows Setup starts. I get to the partitions screen, remove the partitions then click New. Windows Setup creates the 4 Partitions (Recovery, MSR, System and Primary) as expected.
When I click Next and Setup begins to copy files, the system locks up. The mouse pointer stops moving, keyboard is unresponsive, and it will sit at 0% for as long as it's left on.
After checking, Microsoft makes a few notes about the requirements. Setup will not run if the OS does not match the UEFI 'bitness'. If this were the issue, I would get a text-mode message about it being the wrong architecture. I don't get that. I get the install wizard, so it is supported.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824898.aspx Has more information.
And I suspect this is a version problem as the original Windows 7 install was a UEFI install, not Legacy. It appears the BIOS firmware I have installed is not compatible with Windows 8.1.
Will an update be made available? Or will I have to revert to WIndows 7 UEFI, and upgrade?

  • How to install the Remote Desktop Services role on a Windows 2012 R2 Server

    Hello,
I am a bit confused on how to install the RDP role on a 2012 R2 server. I have a two server domain and would like to make the second member server an RDP server to host applications (Word, Excel, a medical software, etc.) where users from their windows
7 desktop will use the Remote Desktop Connection to connect to the server, create a session and do their work. When installing the role, I am prompted with two options:
1- Role-based or feature based installation
    2- Remote Desktop services installation
I see the RDP install option in both cases.
1- Which one do I use?
2- What role services do I install? (Connection broker, Gateway, Licensing, Session Host, Virtualization host and Web access). I think I need the first four only.
3- When installing software after RDP, I use the Change user /install and Change user /execute commands. What happens to the software that is already installed? Can remote
    users use those?
Any help will be very much appreciated.
    Thank You,
    Victor.

    TP,
Thank you for your response. I added the RD Licensing thru the Role-based option.
Also opened the local group policy thru gpedit.msc and added the server name and the licensing mode type to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services -> Remote Desktop Session
    Host -> Licensing
Use the specified RD license servers = NameOfMyServer
Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode = TypeOfMyLicense (Per User in my case)
    Thank you again,
    Victor

  • Boot Camp Services allegedly interfering with Windows 7 upgrade installer

The MS Windows 'upgrade advisor' analyzes my Vista install & says I'm good to go with an upgrade, onto my Boot Camp partition, from Vista 32 bit to W-7 32-bit - - - -
BUT..... when, after booting up in Vista, I try to run the W-7 installer program the following happens:
    1) starts off immediately copying needed files and trying to create temp folders and then aborts with a a Microsoft error message Code 0x80070005 - "unable to create a required installation folder."
It is said, on credible Microsoft help forums like this one, that this is a known issue with Boot Camp not supporting W7, but the workaround some people have apparently tried quite successfully is to run the Vista uninstaller and REMOVE -"Boot Camp Services" from the boot camp volume; THEN,//////install the W-7 upgrade normally; then go back to the Leopard install DVD and reinstall BootCamp Services. Can this be done ? Should it work just that simply ?
I am leery and cautious about trying this without assurances from more experienced Mac guys that it should not cause me any serious issues I'd regret creating.
IS Apple aware of this issue and do they have a suggested fix ? Are they working on a solution ?

You must be using the Win7 upgrade software. I ran into the same problem. Here's what you can try. First, run the upgrade software application and let it extract all the files to your Windows drive. The installer will then fail, but you will have a folder on your drive that contains the upgrader's content. Burn the contents of that folder (not the folder itself) to a DVD. Then restart Windows and delete the upgrader folder. Now insert the DVD you made and navigate to it. Double-click on the Startup application. The updater should now work. I had the option to upgrade my existing system or archive the existing system and do a clean install Win7. I had nothing to save so i opted for the clean install. I've tried this twice so far, and it has worked for me.

  • To install Remote Desktop Services User CAL on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP1

    Dear Sir,
Presently we have installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP 1. And now i would like to install Remote Desktop Services User CAL on this server. I have 25 digit product key of Windows Server
2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services User CAL (20). Downloaded this product key from our MSDN Subscriptions.
Kindly suggest me how to install (CAL server with product key that i have) and configure remote desktop services on my above existing server also how to point other server with my CAL server.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    1. Install Remote Desktop Session Host and Remote Desktop Licensing Role Services using Server Manager.
    2. Open RD Licensing Manager (licmgr.exe), Activate your server, then install your license
    3. In RD Session Host Configuration (tsconfig.msc), set the Licensing mode to Per User and Specify your RD Licensing server name (itself).  If you want you may configure these two settings via group policy setting instead.  The path of the
group policy settings is Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Licensing
    4. You may point other RDSH servers to your RD Licensing server using RD Session Host Configuration or via group policy as mentioned above.
    5. Optionally you may consider installing other Remote Desktop Role Services such as RD Gateway, RD Web Access, RD Connection Broker, etc.

  • I bought  an iPad 3 yesterday; this is an upgrade from the original iPad. I was told that migrating the data would be simple. My desktop is a PC with Windows 7 Professional. I can't find a way to back up my old iPad so I can restore the data to the new

I bought an update to the original iPad an iPad 3. In was told that migrating the data from my old iPad to the new will be a snap. Alas, it isn't. My desktop is a new high end PC that came preloaded with Windows 7 Professional and I have had nothing but problems. My earlier computer was XP and everything, including my Apple interface, in particular iTunes, worked without problems. When I was trying to back up my data from the old iPad to my desktop, the only thing it would do is synchronize, then got an error message to download the latest iTunes, which I did but it still did not work. I have a lot of music both purchased through iTunes and a lot of others which were CDs that were copied to the desktop. I also have a lot of books through Kindle and other books in iBooks and audio books from other sources, plus two iPods I want to sync. I need some advise on where I find the back up feature in iTunes so I can copy all the data on from my old iPad. Your help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

In technical support, sometimes you have to make educated guesses. I'm sorry that you were offended.
iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her.

If you don't want Boot Camp and you don't want a virtual machine, go buy a Windows computer.
Both Boot Camped Windows and Windows running in a virtual machine work well. Your issues are because of your lack of knowledge or understanding, not because Boot Camp and virtual machines are poor products. Universities, large and small businesses, home users, etc. use virtual machines to run their operating systems.
Your statements about Boot Camp and Parallels are not the experience of thousands of users.
Either find someone who is knowledgeable about running Windows on Apple computers to help you or buy a Windows computer. Believe me, if you find a way to install only Windows on your Apple computer without using Boot Camp or a virtual machine you will have more problems than what you have already experienced.
