Windows "equivalent" to iDVD (and rest of iLife Suite)

Hello everyone.
I'm working on a presentation for my English class and am trying to convince the class that an Apple computer is the best one for a college student.
One of my arguments is the inclusion of iLife and the money it can save.
However, I have very little knowledge of what equivalent programs exist for a machine running Windows XP. I know iPhoto can be replaced by camera software included with a digital camera, but what about the rest of the iLife Suite?
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks much!
~Lyssa

.. I know iPhoto can be replaced by camera software included with a digital camera..
naw.. not really...
iLife is a bundle of apps, working TOGETHER...
as many Apple apps, it sets strong limitations... file formats, file locations, workflow.. but, these limitations lead to simplicity and convenience..
in Windows, you have by far more 'options' ... which a) I don't need, b) confuse me...
PC users don't 'like' a single app 'grabbing' all files.. (read posts in the iTunes4windows section...) for me, as an old Apple user, it is perfect, that iM, iDVD, iPhoto offer all in the same dialog all my music.. and playlists.. or albums...
on PC, you're offered with zillions of apps.. some free, some cheap shareware.. but none work together, no 'team up' .. I tried some Ulead products.. nice, zillions of effects (which I never need...) - but when it comes to 'burn a DVD of that', I'm lost again in options.. within minutes, the parts of your projects are anywhere from c:/ to g:/ .. ;))
iLife is an excellent choice for beginners, who don't want to care for tech background, but 'just doin' ...
on PC, you need at last one SysAdmin (=$$$), who cares for the 'health' of the system... the TCO (total costs of ownership) IS still higher on PCs.. I'm still able to use my 7y old iBook G3 for movie making with iM 3...

  • How to update Photoshop and rest of CS4 suite to 64 bit windows 7

Hi.  I've been using Adobe CS4 Master Suite on a 32 bit vista system.
    I'm switching to a 64 bit windows 7 computer.
After going through the whole Master Suite Installation process, all of my Adobe programs show up in 32 bit / x86 format, except Photoshop which shows up both in 32 bit / x86 folder AND in 64 bit.
How do I get the rest of the Master Suite to show up / install in 64 bit?  (is there a separate update?  require a separate purchase?  and why did photoshop work whereas the rest did not?)
And how do I check within the individual program to see if it's 32 or 64 bit?  (photoshop has a system info tab that identified PS as 64 bit, but other progs don't have that)
    Thanks

How do I get the rest of the Master Suite to show up / install in 64 bit?
You don't. Only Photoshop is 64bit, the other apps are conventional 32bit apps. The isntall location is therefore correct (within microsofts guidelines).

  • Problems with Windows 7 home premium and ovi

    Excuse me for my english.
    I've a big problem with Windows 7 and NOKIA N97 32G
I install the latest version of Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0.2.42. When I connect the phone with USB and select PC suite mode in the phone, OVI don't see the phone and say method not compatible.
    I can't synchronize the phone.
    Help me.
    Thanks

I just want to say that many Nokia Ovi Suite problems have showed up for me recently. I tried everything (including many reinstalls, cleans, etc.) and nothing helped.
    Finally I found the solution:
I realized that I have installed Service Pack 1 on Windows 7 (32-bit), and this stopped Ovi Suite from working correctly. The solution is to run Ovi Suite in compatibility mode as "Windows 7"
(You may be surprised to run an application in "Windows 7" compatibility mode on Windows 7. But after installing Service Pack, it is no longer "Windows 7" but it is now "Windows 7 SP1"! This is different. So "Windows 7" is the old mode without the service pack, and in this old mode Ovi Suite works.)
Concluding: After installing Service Pack 1 just use compatibility mode as "Windows 7" to run Ovi Suite, and this program should work OK (at least for me it works on a 32-bit OS).
PS. My version of Ovi Suite is 3.0.0.290

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you have another Mac or PC, you can use Remote Disc to install iLife on the MacBook Air > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1777 If not, the other option is to use an external DVD drive as the best option, but Remote Disc is also a way

Not the movie, it said I had to download something extra.
    (2) Why is it that I can view my website perfectly, but others can't?
Probably because you have Flip4Mac or something else that handles the format not handled by QuickTime.
    (3) Are you saying that one of the formats shown on the website you mention might be compatible with more computers than the one I used?
At least it should work with ordinary Mac's that have not added anything.
    (4) Do you know how I can find the format I used in iMovie? I think it's MPEG-4, but there may be more than one version.
Sorry, no. Some iMovie forums are at

Thanks for the information. I'm going to quit for now, but tomorrow I'm going into town to buy a book on iMovie. I was able to use it to launch my website, but only with someone walking me through every step. There's a lot to know-and quickly forget-so I think I'll need the book constantly by my side. It's just not feasible for me to have to call Apple or write Apple Forum every time I get stuck. I'll just have to be able to do the necessary by myself--and with my book, of course. By the way, my friend with the PC was also told that she had to download something. Thanks again.

  • IDVD and iLife '11

I just purchased a new 15" Macbook with retina display however it doesn't have iDVD and I'm in need of the program. I understand that I need to download iLife however I cannot find the program to download and there was not a startup disk, or any other disk for that matter, with the laptop upon purchase.
    What can I do?

If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • Do refurbished macbook airs come with pages and the rest of the iLife suite as new macbook airs?

Thinking about adding a refurbished MacBook Air to the stable.   Does anyone know if refurbished macbook airs come with pages the rest of the iLife suite the same as new macbook airs?

They may have iLife pre-installed, but not iWork. In any event you are able to get both for free when you buy a new computer. I don't know if this extends to refurbs. Nevertheless, you should be able to get iWork as a new Mavericks user. If you've already gotten them for your other computers, then the re-downloads are free.
iWork and iLife for Mac come free with every new Mac purchase. Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store℠. iWork and iLife for iOS are available for free from the App Store℠ for any new device running iOS 7, and are also available as free updates for existing users. GarageBand for Mac and iOS are free for all OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 users. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available for a one-time in-app purchase of $4.99 for each platform.

  • Installed iDVD and now I have lost iPhoto

I have an iMac 27" late 2013. I was wanting to burn some dvd's and installed iDVD, while working with iDVD I received a notice that iPhoto could not be opened because it may be damaged or incomplete...Can I get it back???

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.

  • IDVD and imovie will not import

I cannot import anything into iDVD or iMovie. I don't know if I have the wrong format, the files are too large, or what.
I had videos from my hi8 put onto DVD's. They are in individual folders marked "video TS"
They are "NTSC format. They are not "PAL" When I could not import them, I converted them in MPEG Streamclip to "DV" format, no luck. Then I tried MP4 format, no luck. I imported them using "file, import" into a new project. An error window appeared: Error during import. The file could not be imported: unknown error.
OR "The file could not be imported" and it named the file
I trashed the preferences file, also, just in case it was the software itself.
I HAVE to get a section of one of them removed for an eulogy next week.
    Any ideas?

Please use the Help Menu in iDvd and in the search field type in "Formats that work with iDvd".

  • Do you have to install iMovie 08 along with the rest of iLife 08?

iLife 08 will apparently work on a PowerPC G4 (which is what I have), but iMovie 08 requires a G5. Can I choose to download the rest of iLife 08 without downloading iMovie 08, or is it an "all-or-nothing" deal?

Thanks for the speedy response! I have just one more question (that I was actually leading up to with the other one). Once I load what I can of iLife 08, can I still download iMovie 06 HD even if I don't have iMovie 08? And if so, will iMovie 06 work with iDVD 08?
    Thanks again!

  • Often, Firefox app will close, but the underlying Windows process will not and cannot be stopped via Task Manager. When this happens, Firefox can no longer be used...the system must be rebooted.

    Hello,
Often, the Firefox app will close, but the underlying Windows process will not and cannot be stopped via Task Manager. When this happens, Firefox can no longer be used...the system must be rebooted. This happens especially when many apps are running but even though there are plenty of memory resources available.
I have tried to find if something is using Firefox in the background, but have no way to know what that would be.
Their are no apparent viruses detected.
Firefox is version v5.0 and occurred in earlier release.
    System is Windows 7 (64bit).

well, it's not the same hardware and it's a bit different.
I managed to pass that stage somehow but I still have a problem
I don't use the built-in creator tool that comes with Spyrus as it doesn't know how to append a pre-staged media that was created by SCCM that should apply the Windows file system to a second partition and the WinPE to the first partition.
I managed to do everything. my only problem is that the WTGCreator that comes with SCCM 2012 R2 creates the 350MB partition with FAT32 file system.
when I boot from the device I get the WinPE, I can choose a task sequence and then it fails when trying to apply the wim file. the error tells me that the 350MB partition is FAT32 which is not supported (even though it chooses the second partition, which
is all the rest of the disk space)
what I did was adding another task that converts the 32 Fat partition to an NTFS partition and then the process continues and finishes successfully! but that's a workaround.
I'm trying to make this process as smooth as possible without having additional steps

  • I was having problems burning DVDs' fro iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK?

I was having problems burning DVDs' from iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault.
I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK? I have seen these with SATA is this the correct cable for my mac?
I have also tried the Mac superdrive but my imac wont recognise it as it's been configured for macbook air and mini mac. I know I can "make" it work by doing something or other in com.apple/plist, but dont want to mess about in there.
I'm also told an external drive would work but does "mac compatible" mean only for air and mini as their own superdrive is or all macs?
Any help appreciated before I convince myself mac is no better than windows pc!

Thanks but this didn't really help.
I can buy the drives at a dozen places but none of them seem to know what connection is correct (SATA etc) and that includes the apple store. It was the store who told me buy the superdrive and all my problems would be over. Wrong! It isn't recognised by imac as it's confifured for air and mini mac. Only way to make it work is as i said in earlier post. (Would you be happy buying a car you were told would start and then discover you have to open the bottome and fiddle to make it go?)
The apple store I would not even consider taking it to. Days without the pc, over priced and don't have a good reputation for actually fixing things!
    But thanks

  • Windows will not start and cannot be reinstalled

I have a 300GB Win 7 partition on disk 2 on my Mac Pro (set up using Bootcamp) that was running fine until a few days ago.  There were some "critical updates" that Windows installed, followed by a restart.  Now, it simply refuses to start.  When I boot into the Apple drive (disk 1), I get a message in OS X saying that the volume did not mount correctly; interestingly enough, another NTFS partition (used for data only) on drive 3 is also reported as unmountable.
    I tried the following:
    1.  Reformatted drive 2 as one partition with Bootcamp and started a fresh installation of Windows - it failed by not allowing the Windows installer to run (hangs up after the logo).
    2.  Reformatted drive 2 as one partition and restored a previously good image of the drive using Winclone.  It verified correctly and mounted properly in OS X (I can view the files).  However after I restart and select the Windows HD to boot, it shows the green bars upon Windows start and then hangs up with a black screen.
    3.  Booting up with the Windows 7 Recovery disc to attempt repair.  It failed with an error: unable to repair - contact Administrator.
    4.  Booting up with the Windows 7 Recovery disc to restore using an image created with Windows 7.  The operation was successful, but the restored partition still hangs up in the same place.
In short, Windows won't start up and I can't reinstall it either!
I can't help but think there is something wrong outside of the NTFS partitions (boot partition?), somewhere in the OS X partition.  Is there a "secret" Bootcamp partition/file that could be corrupted and cause this? Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?

OS X has its own read-only NTFS.
Which version of OS X? and I was trying to find if you installed 3rd party NTFS driver for OS X? some don't work, and need to be upgraded too.
Mac has EFI and if you use Alt or Option it doesn't have abilty to mount or modify but it does 'peek' for valid boot volumes.
Windows 7 - normally you will have 100MB partition (with 32MB used) which is actually where/what Windows boots from.
Install of Windows w/o BCA and w/o OS X being present avoids any conflict, but very often OS X's control panel for Startup Disk won't see Windows. Boot Camp control panel in Windows though always works for seeing both.
I think just the process of setting the default OS could mess up something, and that is the only place or time.
I don't have Lion. Maybe at some point. Intrigued with Parallels 7 support too.
Some people use to have a Recovery disc instead of an installer. I assumed that was what you had rather than the one you burned. Is that WinRE? Paragon has updated theirs to  WinRE 3.0.
While Windows 7 is running and updated, did you install any Apple drivers, and if so, which? is this 3.0 thru 3.3? there seems to be trouble with 3.0 and 3.3, so 3.2 seems best. If Lion then 4.0 (and with the live download the issues that another Mac Pro owner had the first week Lion came out trying to use 4.0 was just a disaster and he went back to 3.2. Lately, it 'seems' that BC 4.01 drivers in Windows are okay or safe to use.  Thanks to the public testing guys! sorry had to put you through that I guess?
So between steps  #2 and #3 was Boot Camp drivers installed? they are helpful but not 100% essential, but does add a timesynch and osswitcher to Windows which are.  The rest of it.... iffy.
AppleHFS for Windows was buggy and one of the reasons for 3.1 and 3.2, or using Paragon HFS driver for Windows which is what I use and how I access HFS drives and works fine. And they have had a solid NTFS driver for OS X, but may want to check and Google for - some had trouble it seems, and any driver needs to be retuned for Lion or any OS update sadly.
