Windows essentials and RDS

Hi there
Could anyone give and advise regarding licensing?
Here's my escenario:
Puchased a phisycal server with VMWARE ESXI 5.5
1 Windows 2012 STD license
1 Windows 2012 essentials license
40 remote users accesing RDS in Load Balance
My goal:
Use the 2 Windows 2012 STD servers for RDS
Use the Windows Essentials as Active Directory domain controller..
My questions:
1.-Microsoft says it is legal to have 2 OS or instances with the same license on Hyper-V..Does this also apply for VMWARE?
2.- Essentials only supports 25 users, as i will have 40 users authenticating with the AD..will this affect to the users accesing the RDS services on the 2 servers running Windows 2012 STD? Would i require more than 25 CALS for the AD to support my 40 users
in the RDS?
3.- Remote Services CALS..As i'm trying to have 2 servers in Load Balance..Who controls the count of CALS in both servers? Should i need to purchase 20 for each one? or 40?
Any help is appreciated.

Hi Nacho,
Regarding the licensing query, you may need to refer to Microsoft Licensing support to get more professional help:

  • Step by step to disable Folder Redirection for a single user - Windows 7 and SBS 2011 Essentials

OK...I got chewed (by someone I have a lot of respect for) for pounding on an old thread, so I'm starting a new one. I've got the Windows 7 Value Pack Plugin for SBS 2011 Essentials and Folder Redirection is working for everybody. What I'm looking for is
exactly how to go into Group Policy and disable the FD for a single user. I'm not looking for quick, incomplete answers. If you don't have time to give me the 'For Dummies' version, don't bother. Sorry, but I've done all the Googling I can stand for one day
and I'm over it! (and a little grumpy)
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Wayne,
    Here's what I'd do.
    1) create a Security Group in your AD environment. Call it 'Folder Redirection Members' or something like that. Put all the user accounts in your AD environment who you want to have their folders continue to be redirected to the server, do not include the
one user who you wish to exclude.  in other words, you're going to use a specific security group to target the Folder Redirection policy (right now, it's Domain Users, which is everyone).
    2) Edit the Group Policy that the W7PP created in your AD environment. It's likely called "W7PVP Folder Redirection".  Start with verification under the Settings tab, expand Folder Redirection beneath User Configuration states that
Policy Removal Behaviouris set to Restore Contents.  Then proceed using the Editor, to make adjustments under the Scope tab; verify membership in Security Filtering.  Remove Domain Users,
add in Folder Redirection Members (or whatever you named your group in step 1).
    3) on your workstation that your user you are applying the change to disable folder redirection, Log on to the domain account while connected to your network, elevate a command prompt, and perform a 'gpupdate /force' command and then reboot your computer.
Folder redirection configuration should be removed from the system and redirected contents should be restored back to your local path. Verify with inspection of the My Documents or other folders.
Hope this helps. Keep in mind, no warranty implied or expressed in this advice.
Try not to be so darn grumpy. :-/

lower your font size unless you have difficulty
    MS Security Essentials is excellent
Then again maybe time to investigate Windows 8 RP (which uses Defender)

  • Question concerning the state of licenses of a Windows 2008 R2 RDS server after disolving the Domain, the DC, and the AD.

Background: - several months back a Windows 2008 r2 domain existed with a DC, and an AD.  Windows servers where apart of this domain.  One of the servers being a Windows 2008 R2 server with Remote Desktop Services loaded.  The server was properly
licensed for 8 User CALS.  All was operating correctly.  Since that time the domain has been removed, the DC removed and the AD removed.  What is left are Windows 2008 R2 servers in a workgroup.  Again, one being the Remote Desktop Server.
Q1. Can the functioning Per User CALs (totaling 8) remain as Per User CALs?
Q2. Am I required to switch them to 8 Per Device CALs?
Referencing: "Best practices for setting up Remote Desktop Licensing...." - Article 2473823
In the above article it states under "RDS HOST and RDS Licensing servers are in the same Workgroup" that "We can use ONLY Per Device CALs in a workgroup environment. So, you should install only Per Device CALs on RDS licensing server."
( Which in my case they are both the same server.
Any information regarding what licensing options that can be used on a workgroup RDS server would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Yes, agree with the supporting article which you have commented. We can only use per device CAL under workgroup environment and if you want to use per user CAL then server need to be member of domain.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 2008 R2 RDS

    Hello folks,
Using SRSS 4.2 / SRWC 2.2 with Sun Ray Connector Windows Components software installed on the clients.
Our test show amazing screen speed, and full 32 bit colour depth, great flash speed on Windows 2008 R2 RDS but no audio.
Our test using Windows 7 Enterprise displayed fast graphic speed, Windows Aero disabled, no audio and cannot be changed thus the user experience is not pleasant.
Anyone know when this will be addressed as it is crucial for any new deployments and upcoming desktop refreshes.
    Thanks!

After talking with Sun Support, this is a known bug that is slated to get fixed in the next SRWC patch. No timeline was available for the patch.

  • Windows Server 2012R2 RDS sound and smartcard redirection issues

We are using RDS collection with two Windows Server 2012R2 session hosts. Both hosts are virtual servers (clean installation) and are used as session hosts (terminals) with 10 to 25 users each.  RDS Connection Broker is also virtual machine with
Windows Server 2012 R2. Our users are using Windows 7 Embedded thin clients with MSTSC RDP 8.0.
Our terminals are running correctly after fresh boot, but in 12 to 48 hours after boot we encounter problem with sound and smardcards redirection in RDP. Remote sound stops working and users cannot login with their smardcards.
Relogging users doesnt help, deleting profiles doesnt help, restarting sound service doesnt help, only viable way to solve issue is server restart. There is not any event in event log about this issue.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Sound Redirection:
Please check the following GP setting as well.
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection
    Limit audio playback quality: Enabled
    Audio Quality: High
On the Client PC, in the .rdp file that you use to connect to the server, make sure you have the following line:
    audioqualitymode:i:2
In addition check that the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services must be running for audio to work.
    Smartcard redirection:
Kindly try to update the patch for Smartcard redirection and check the result.
Smart card redirection in remote sessions fails in a Windows 7 SP1-based RDP 8.1 client

    FYI

Hi Susan.  I hope there's a better 'fix' coming to replace this "uninstall the updates, restore, then reinstall the updates after the restore".  This kind of workaround requires that all of us remember that there's a problem
with KB3023562 and KB3004375 from now until the end of WS2012E.  Not sure I'll remember this 6 months from now when the problem crops up during a restore.   -:(

  • [Forum FAQ] Introduce the Windows Essentials Connector software and checklist for its configuration issues

    Introduction
The Connector software for the Windows Server Essentials OS connects the computers in your network to the Windows Server Essentials server. When you connect computers to the server via Connector
software, it will help you to automatically back up the computers and monitor their health. Meanwhile, you will be able to configure and remotely administer the Windows Server Essentials server. The Connector software is installed when you connect a client
computer to the server. You can start by typing http://<your_server_name>/connect
Example: Windows 8.1 connects to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials
    1. Open the Dashboard on Windows Server 2012 Essentials, navigate to USERS tab. Right click and select Add a user account (Figure 1). Then follow the Add a User Account wizard to configure
and add the user account (Figure 2).
    Figure 1: Add a user account -1
    Figure 2: Add a user account -2
    2. Logon the client computer, type the http://<your_server_name>/connect in IE. Then you will see the download page for Connector software (Figure 3).
    Figure 3:Download the
    Connector software
    3. Click Download software for Windows and download the Connect software (ComputerConnector), then run it.
After restart automatically, please follow the Windows Server Essentials Connector Configuration Wizard (Figure 4 – Figure 7).
Figure 4: Windows Server Essentials Connector Configuration Wizard -1
Figure 5: Windows Server Essentials Connector Configuration Wizard -2
Figure 6: Windows Server Essentials Connector Configuration Wizard -3
Figure 7: Windows Server Essentials Connector Configuration Wizard -4
    4. When complete the configuration wizard and logon the client computer, you will be able to use the Launchpad (Figure 8).
    Figure 8: Launchpad
    5. Meanwhile, when you open Dashboard, will be able to find that the Windows 8.1 is listed under DEVICES. It will help administrators to manage the client computer (Figure 9).
Figure 9: Clients listed in the Devices panel
    For Windows XP
You can type http://<your_server_name>/connect in IE. Then the download page will appear (Figure 10).
    Figure 10: Download page
However, it will encounter the error: “xxx.exe is not a valid Win32 application” (Figure 11).
Figure 11: Error message on Windows XP
Windows XP is not a supported OS for client computer. For more details, please refer to
Get Connected in Windows Server Essentials.
    In addition, please note:
Microsoft ended support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. This change has affected your software updates and security options.

    Checklist for the configuration issues
First of all, when we want to connect the client computers to Windows Server Essentials, please check if the date and time settings for the client computer is consistent with the server.
Meanwhile, please also check the Regional and Language settings.
Issue 1: Installation did not succeed
When accept the license terms to continue in the configuration wizard, you may encounter the error (Figure 12).
    Installation did not succeed
Windows Server Essentials Connector has not been installed because:
    Cannot download the package.
Verify that your device is connected to the Internet, and then install the Windows Server Essentials Connector.
Figure 12: Installation did not succeed
    Checklist:
    1. Verify the DNS client settings.
    2. Check the communication between DNS server and the client.
    3. Check if you can ping server via IP address and server name successfully
Issue 2: Cannot connect this computer to the network (Network related)
This computer is already connected to another Windows Server network. Before connecting this computer to the Windows Server Essentials network, you must remove this computer from the
    current network.
To resolve this issue, contact the person responsible for your network.
Figure 13: Cannot connect this computer to the network (Network related)
    Checklist:
    1. Check if the client computer is a member of another server network.
    2. Change the client computer to Workgroup via administrator. Then check if you can connect it to the new Windows Server Essentials network.
    Issue 3:
Cannot connect this computer to the network (Account related)
The computer cannot be connected to the server using the user name and password credentials provided. This may be because an existing computer account having name “ComputerName” was previously
created using a different set of credentials. Rename this computer and then try to connect this computer to the server again, or contact your administrator to remove any old conflicting account.
When you connect the client computer to server essentials with a new user account, please check if the client computer has been connected to the server essentials, and didn’t remove from
Dashboard. You may encounter the following error.
Figure 14: Cannot connect this computer to the network (Account related)
    Checklist:
    1. Check if the client computer has been connected to the server essentials, and didn’t remove from Dashboard.
    2. Remove the client computer from the Dashboard, then try again.

  • Intel Matrix Storage Manager disables Windows Update and Windows Validation on Windows 7 64-bit

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad R61 8918CTO on which I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (64-bit) on a new Seagate Momentus XT 750GB drive. The installation was trouble-free, as were all of the post-install Windows Updates.
Then I installed ThinkVantage System Update 4.03 and used it to install most of the available Lenovo updates. Big mistake. I'll spare you a detailed account of the hours I wasted troubleshooting, rolling back to previous restore points, and doing more troubleshooting, but it turns out that installing Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver v. 8.9.2.1002 caused Windows Update and Windows Validation to fail.
Symptoms: Windows Update control panel can't check for updates and reports that the Windows Update service isn't running when it actually is. Online Windows Validation fails and the standalone Windows Validation utility won't install. Microsoft programs that require a validated copy of Windows (e.g., Microsoft Security Essentials) won't install.
Solution: Roll back the driver for the relevant SATA controller to the previous driver.
I've reinstalled ThinkVantage System Update 4.03 and hidden the proposed Intel Matrix Storage Manager update; since then, I've used it to complete my Lenovo updates without issue.
I hope this post will help other people with this problem find the solution a lot faster than it took me!

This happened after installing a new advanced format drive with 4k-byte sectors, I'd guess.  If the storage driver doesn't report the physical sector size to Windows, update fails.
I just ran across this myself (again) putting Win 7 on a T400.
I don't know why this is still going on.  It may be that the update lists for older machines still have pre-AF-drive drivers listed.
FYI, another fix is going to the Intel site and installing the latest Matrix Storage Manager AHCI driver.  This may be more desirable than rolling back to an older driver in some cases.

  • Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS on Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing Server

    Hi,
at the moment we are installing the first couple of Windows Server 2012 in our infrastructure.
Some of them have installed RDS.
Now we are wondering whether it is possible to use our existing Windows Server 2008 R2 licensing server for serving the licenses we have (yes we to have new Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS) or whether we have to install a new host based on Windows Server 2012.
We tried to add the new license to the 2008 R2 licensing server, but it is not possible. The licensing manager's error message: "The license code contains invalid characters or not enough characters."
    Is there any other way?
    Thanks and regards
    Matthias

    Hi matt_will_fix_it,
    How about Windows 2012 R2 ?
Will a Windows 2012 RD Licensing server provide licences to a Windows 2012 R2 server?
I have not tested it, but it should work.  Server 2012 R2 requires the same RDS CAL version as Server 2012.  If you try it and have an issue please reply back.

yes you need the updates and patches.
Only some of the drivers that Windows will automatically install at times
and always make sure to insure it is using restore points
do all the maintenance andsuch as normal
use MS Security Essentials for AV is really top notch
    Clean disk space
Use WinClone new program to inisure you have a restore image

  • Sharepoint 2013 and rds

I need some direction with a implementation plan for sharepoint 2013.  I want to present a common sharepoint interface to my remote users but they will also need to run applications on my network.  will I have to bring up RDS or something
similar in order to run programs on the remote user side.  Ideally I would like to bring up a web part or app that will make links to executables.  Overall my concept is to present to my remote users a sharepoint interface and no direct access
    to the server environment.
    thanks,
    peter

    Hi peter,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to connect remote users to present a common SharePoint interface.
Microsfot provides an office tool called Lync. Lync connects people everywhere, on Windows 8 and other operating systems including mobile devices, as part of their everyday productivity experience. Lync provides a consistent, single client experience for
presence, instant messaging, voice, video and a great meeting experience.

  • Can I install windows essentials in firefox instead of internet explorer

recently installed windows essentials on internet explorer in order to use windows live mail, but would like to have it on firefox. Didnt see a firefox option on the download.

By default if AV software is installed Firefox will use it for instance to scan downloads. Firefox has its own rudimentary Phishing and malware protection

IIRC Windows Essentials does not specifically install on a single browser. I think my Windows machines have that installed and firefox uses it.

  • Windows 2008 R2 RDS Licensing Issue

I have Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 farm (with all of the application servers running Windows 2003) and I have just migrated from using a Windows 2003 server for the terminal services licensing to a Windows 2008 R2 RDS server for the licensing. We have
a number of thin-clients that connect to the Citrix farm and provide a kiosk for users. We have 85 per device licenses however we are only using 15 of those licenses (plans were made but never implemented to use the rest), so we have 70 available licenses.
The licenses are configured per device and as Windows Server 2003 licenses.
After the migration to 2008 R2, the thin-clients connected to the new licensing server without any trouble at all. As I monitored the licenses on the new server, each thin-client was given a temporary license first and then at the
next connection they got a permanent license. All of this I have been able to confirm through the event logs on the server.
However, what I get in the event logs of the new 2008 R2 licensing server an event with event ID 21 that says:
The Remote Desktop license server "ServerName" does not have any remaining permanent Remote Desktop Services client access licenses (RDS CALs) of the type "Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL". As a result, the Remote Desktop license server cannot issue
RDS CALs of the type "Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL" to the Remote Desktop Session Host server "vvv.xxx.yyy.zzz". To resolve this problem, verify that the Remote Desktop licensing mode configured on the RD Session Host server matches the type of
RDS CALs installed on the Remote Desktop license server. If required, purchase and install additional RDS CALs as needed for this Remote Desktop license server.
(Note I have removed the server name and IP address due to company policy.) I have confirmed that every server in my Citrix farm has its terminal services configuration set for "per device" licensing and I have also specified the name of the 2008
R2 server rather than allow the servers to automatically find the licensing server. I have confirmed that my 2008 R2 server is configured for "per device" licensing.
The IP addresses I have seen in the event log messages are the IP addresses of a Citrix server rather than one of the thin-clients, and so far every Citrix server we have has appeared in one of these event log messages. I have been able
to determine that this event does not occur when a thin-client is connecting up nor does this event occur when I remotely log into the server.
As I noted above we only have 15 thin-clients using the 85 licenses so we have 70 available licenses for the Citrix servers so why are we out of licenses? What is this message trying to tell me?
    Thanks
    Brent

    Hi Bent,
According the Event ID 21, I think you might have the license connection issues with RDS CALs. I suggest you analyze some relative services and
make sure your network without any misconfiguration.
Hopefully, there is an article describes how to troubleshoot this license issue on the terminal server.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/A98D84AC-B824-4F00-BF58-3CFF23493BF9.aspx
By the way, the license of Windows Server 2003 does not support to assign CAL to allow user to access the Windows Server 2008. You should buy a
new Windows Server 2008 license to meet the requirement above if necessary.
    Hope this helps.
