Windows Explorer doesn't preview Reader XI while it did read Acrobat CS6, why?

Because I need Adobe to remember more than 10 pdf files I switched from Acrobat CS6 (purchased) to Reader XI (Free) as my default program to open pdf files. One thing that became apparent immediately is this: Before, with Acrobat, I would be able to see a preview on the right pane of Windows Explorer. Now with Reader XI nothing shows. Why is this? Is it possible to get a preview with XI, if so how?
My OS: Win 7 home prem 64
Thank you

Hey Pintree3,
Yes its possible with Reader XI to get a preview of the pdf file in windows explorer.
First thing first, Make sure you have preview pane enabled in Windows Explorer.
Secondly i would recommend you to Open your Reader and go to File 'Open' menu by pressing 'F2' and then in Open window dialog box, Enable the preview pane, Disable it and re-enable the preview pane; now close the reader and now look for pdf preview in windows explorer. It should work fine.
Please let me know if this works for you.
Regards,
Rahul

If I set the default program for viewing PDF as Acrobat XI Pro the a PDF file will open with Acrobat XI Pro, but in Outlook I will get a white screen and the information bubble "This file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it" and in Windows Explorer I get a white screen in the preview pane.

I am also getting exactly the same problem, highlighting multiple pdf files right clicking and choosing "print" prints the first document, fails to close the adobe x window and sits there patiently untill it's manualy closed and then the next document prints  - repeat - loop.
Have this happening on just about every windows xp machine in the office that I try it on and any and all versions of "Adobe X" that I care to install.
would love a fix for this, reinstalling 9 manually on every PC would waste a day of my life.

Windows Explorer doesn't display some files until I play or get info for them in iTunes.
How do I get them to all show up in Explorer without playing them all one by one?

I think I solved the problem by going to File -> Library -> Organize Library

  • Windows explorer doesn't recognize indd files

I just recently upgraded from CS5 to CS5.5. Now I can't open Indesign files from Windows Explorer. I have tried to use the "open with" and Indesign is not an option and then when I browse to select Indesign.exe it defaults to the main "open with" dialogue box like it won't except Indesign CS5.5 as an option. I can however open the file within Indesign itself. This is VERY inconvenient. Any help would be really appreciated.

Well the bad news is that your install is a little damaged. The best thing you can do is reinstall. I'd try first to do a "repair" which involves runningthe installer again without removing anything. Be sure you turn off any antivirus or malware scanners befor you run the installer, and it would be a good idea to stop instant messengers and iTunes as well.
If that doesn't work, you'll need to uninstall and reinstall again clean. I personally would run the clean tool in between the uninstall and reinstall for good measure (Resolve installation problems with CS5 Cleaner Tool) I would allso run MSConfig before doing the reinstall and make sure you disable all non-essential startup programs and services, especially the ones mentioned above and any browser helpers or extra toolbars.

  • R-Click print from Windows Explorer doesn't print actual document size.

We publish AutoCAD drawings to PDF routinely.  They are setup in 11x17 landscape format.  They are published (AutoCAD's way of printing multiple at once) to PDF in 11x17 landscape format.  When you open the file with Reader they are in 11x17 landscape format.  You can manually print them after opening from adobe reader in in 11x17 landscape format.  But, when you are in Windows Explorer, right click these PDF file(s) then click print, they are printed in 8.5x11 landscape format.
How can we get these to print in the documents actual format?  We want to be able to R-Click the file(s) and print them from Windows Explorer without having to open Reader.

Does anyone know how they can help me?  We could really use this.

  • Windows explorer doesn't open LLB files.

    was running LV6, 6.1, now 7.0 on win98 machine.
recently ran microsoft regclean and now I have no more support for
viewing inside .LLB files through windows explorer. Attempting to
re-enable this through LabVIEW/tools/options does not help.
    Any hints?
    thanks
    paul

It appears that running regclean has busted this function by
removing 7 entries from the system registry.
    Running ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS/National Instruments/LabVIEW/repair,
repaired the problem, and returned Windows Explorer support for LLB
files, unfortunately it also removes the LabVIEW registration name and
Ser#, but this can be easily found (and repaired) in ...
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SOFTWARE
    NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS
    LABVIEW
    7.0
in the system registry and values typed in for Registered Owner & Serial
Number fixes the 'unregistered' on the splash screen.
back to the LLB Explorer support problem,
What I actually did was to,
    1) run regclean to make sure there wasn't any crap in the registry.
    2) fix the LLB Explorer support
problem by 'repairing' LabVIEW from the
    ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS system function.
    3) run regclean
    4) rename the 'UNDOwhatever.REG' file (in regclean directory) to 'Fix
    LabVIEW LLB Support.reg'
    5) Finally, double click 'Fix LabVIEW LLB Support.reg' to put the data
    back into the system registry.
In this way, if I ever run regclean again and it removes the LLB
file support in Windows Explorer, all I have to do is run 'Fix LabVIEW
LLB Support.reg' instead of repairing (re-installing) LabVIEW.
I did this in on a Windows 98 system with LabVIEW 7.0. Your milage may
vary with other platforms or applications.

  • Windows Explorer doesn't start?

    Hi there ;)
Well, I think I have a somewhat peculiar problem. When I start windows, the welcome screen shows up, then it goes black, my "Documents" folder shows up but then nothing happens. I press Ctrl+Alt+Del and I can see that explorer.exe isn't running. So I ckick Run, type in "explorer" and it starts, along with the rest of the "boot" process, meaning it starts all my programs and etc... So, I have a lazy windows xD
    Can anyone guess the problem?

There's a registry key that tells Windows what "shell" to load on startup.  Open regtedit, and look for the key here:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Make sure that the shell key is set to be explorer.exe.  It's weird, but I've seen it happen.

  • Multiple instances of AcroRd32.exe while using Windows Explorer Preview Pane

I'm trying to understand why our computers behave differently while browsing PDF files using Windows Explorer with the preview pane turned on.
All are Windows 7 Pro 32-bit.
The scenario:  Open Windows Explorer with the preview pane turned on, go to a folder full of PDF files, and start single-clicking on them, one by one down the list.  Keep Task Manager open, on the Processes tab, showing processes from all users, as you click on the PDF files.
On two of the computers, you can keep clicking right on the down the list, and the preview pane shows the PDF file contents immediately with each click.  The Task Manager does not show any instances of AcroRd32.exe running, and the machine does not slow down no matter how quickly you go down the list of files.  You can keep clicking all day.
On the other two computers, as you keep clicking down the list, after about six or seven clicks, the machine starts getting slower and slower in responding to display the PDF contents.  In Task Manager, you see multiple instances of AcroRd32.exe executing, and the list keeps growing with more instances - I've seen up to 8, with memory allocations to some of the instances approaching 700MB!  One of the CPU cores goes to 100%. If you stop clicking in Windows Explorer, eventually, the machine recovers, and the list of multiple instances of AcroRd32.exe shrinks, but never goes away completely until you close the Explorer window.
What could account for this difference?  One of the users is complaining - he often browses folders of scanned PDFs looking for invoices, transactions, etc., and has to go slowly to keep his machine from bogging down.  I don't know when this behavior started.
It doesn't matter if it is a shared folder on a network resource or one locally on the machine, or if it is an admin or standard Windows account - the behavior is the same.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader, to no avail.
    Thanks for any ideas.

Yes i'm having this issue to.
Becomes worse after display many documents in pane, worst even if scanned images are in.
After killing the  process, sometimes it generate even more process.
After Killing all the process, sometimes need to deactivate the pane view and activate
    again to restore normal preview.
Sometimes it takes a lot of time to progress to file below, if i wait, going to files above, it pass
the file that shows delay, without any problem.
I add received from Microsoft, in answer to the same issue to uninstall adobe reader and install
latest version. It become a bit more stable, but problem still shows.
Abobe reader: 10.1.0, ATI latest drivers 11-07
    Please, Help!

  • Card reader not recognized in Windows Explorer

My Dell XPS 8500 has an internal card reader. An inserted card was always recognized as soon as it was inserted. After installing Lightroom, the inserted card is no longer  recognized by My Computer until after I start lightroom and begin the import process. I would prefer to copy my photos from the card to a chosen file on my hard drive without Lightroom's intervention. Is there a way to accomplish this?

Are you saying Windows Explorer doesn't show the card reader as a drive letter (E: or other letter), but LR does? Please take a screenshot of the LR Import screen and Windows Explorer screens as shown below. On my system the card reader appears as drive I: in both Windows Explorer and LR's Import module:

  • Window explorer problem

After installing an update last night, I shut down the computer (T61) correctly. This morning, I turned it on, but everytime I tried to copy a file or just right clicked on a file in Window explorer, it freeze and stops working. It also affects some other software applications, like Acrobat reader. I wanted to reinstall the operating system (Vista sp1), but how can I backup all my files (more than 100GB) since Window explorer doesn't work?
Did anyone see this problem before? The only reason I can think of is the windows update installed last night. Here is the information of the update: Cumulative update for Media Center for Windows Vista (KB960544)
    Any help would be appreciated!

You did not have a backup or was System Restore turned off? Windows usually makes backup of the files during update so it means this update is probably manually removable

Hi! I run Photoshop CS6 extended, student edition and recently, I'm having an error every time I work with Photoshop. Hi, I'm having  Videotron security services, I don't know much more about it. It's from my Internet provider, I'm paying every month. I think windows defender is active on my computer. I desinstall the antivirus I had when I bought the computer, I think it was macfee. As I have my own security system, I got rid of it.
The problem is recent, a week or so. Everything was running perfectly. Might it be related to any windows updates?
    Thanks for your support.

  • ZIPs close instantly when "Open with Windows Explorer" is selected

If I download a ZIP file and tell Firefox to open the file in Explorer when it completes, the file will sometimes close by itself after a variable length of time (usually less than a second, sometimes as long as two or three). The problem does not occur if I select a different program e.g. 7zip, or if I save it to Downloads and open it manually. Navigating to /AppData/Local/temp/ reveals that the ZIP is still there and can be opened normally even after it seems to disappear.

Make sure that your anti-virus software isn't locking this ZIP file or is interfering otherwise in a way that Windows Explorer doesn't like.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

  • I want a stamp to write to the file metadata and be able to display the result in windows explorer.

I want a stamp to write to the file metadata and be able to display the result in windows explorer. I have read PDF Stamp Secrets and can write to Custom Metadata but don't know how to display that custom field in explorer. Can I have the stamp write to a standard (non-custom) metadata field? Or, how do it get the custom field to display in explorer? Windows is pretty stingy with the file details it displays for PDF files, in fact there are no editable fields provided (like are available for Office files).   I want this to work for multiple users hopefully without having to get the IT group involved to make (or allow) system modifications to make this work. Any ideas? Thank you.

Metadata for Windows Explorer is tagged with different names than the metadata for PDFs. Acrobat cannot copy the metadata to the tagged items of the file header.
There are tools like EXIFTool that can manipulate the data as necessary. Phil Harvey also provides the details about the file types and their metadata tags and values so you should be able to map the tags that need to be updated.
