Windows fails to open Samba ZIP archives with names over 8 characters

I have an XServe running OS X Leopard in Advanced mode. It is running Samba in order to provide file sharing services to Windows clients within our network.
I have Vista running in VMWare Fusion, accessing a file-share on the Leopard server via Samba. I have stored a .exe file and a .zip file on the share. When I try to access these files, I am able to successfully access the .exe but not the .zip.
The error I receive (upon attempting to open the ZIP archive) is:
"Windows cannot open the folder.
The Compressed (zipped) Folder 'Z:\1234abcde.zip' is invalid."
Sometimes copying the file to the local desktop succeeds (allowing me to open the file from there) and sometimes it fails with a message about an "invalid file handle".
If I shorten the name of the zip archive to only eight characters (plus .zip) everything works. The executable, which also has a long name, never presents any problems (I am able to double-click and run it, as well as copy it).
I have no problem accessing these files locally on the server or from a Mac OS X Leopard client (via Samba or AFP).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Erik

  • ITunes window fails to open.

After upgrading to iTunes 10, the iTunes window fails to open. In task manager, the iTunes process runs, and occasionally the "Checking iTunes library" dialogue will pop up, but the window itself does not open. I have already tried most of the suggestions on the Apple help page [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421]. The issue is system-wide and I have tried the following:
    * Removing iTunes Configuration Files
    * Fix digital signing of Windows drivers
    * Check the iTunes and QuickTime installations
However, the problem continues. It is not a problem with a virus on my PC, nor with a conflicting program. I'm at a loss as to what is causing this.
PC meets all the required specs to run iTunes, except graphics card drivers are out-of-date. There is nothing I can do about this short of purchasing a new graphics card, however previous versions of iTunes have run fine.
Can give more details if required, hoping for a fix.
    Thanks

    Try removing the Genius database.
In the "Finder" go to the /username/Music/iTunes/ directory and delete the "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" file. This may allow the program to launch again. This file will be recreated upon first use of the "Genius" feature.

  • Failed to Install The New Preview Build. Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80246007: FBL_AWESOME1501 9926 Professional.

    Hello,
I'm having issues upgrading my Windows 10 Technical Preview installation build 9879 to a newer build that's become available late January 23rd.
I am installing the new upgrade in a Hyper-V virtual machine and get the following error:
Failed to install the new preview build, please try again later. 0x80246007
    What could be the problem?
Previously I've had messages that Windows cannot be upgraded on a computer with less than 2 Gbyte of RAM. That's a Hyper-V VM with dynamic memory and I was highly surprised to see this error; never had this before. Had to set 2048 Mbytes as a minimum memory
for this VM. Now that I have this 80246007 error code.
When looking up System log, the following error messages are listed multiple times:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80246007: FBL_AWESOME1501 9926 Professional.
The errors are returned for the Event ID 20 by WindowsUpdateClient
in task category Windows Update Agent..
    I reviewed the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability
registry key as suggested in Windows
Insider stuck on build 9841 - "No new preview build was found", and here is what it shows:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability]
    "BranchName"="fbl_awesome1501"
    "ThresholdRiskLevel"="low"
    "ThresholdOptedin"=dword:00000001
Note, when attempting to install the downloaded update from a native boot, installation starts with no errors.
However, since setup is not supported for a natively booted VHD files, it does not proceed further showing a message that installation on virtual drives is not supported.
Looks like Setup is having problems installing in a Hyper-V virtual machine.
Possibly, some ESD files got corrupted during downloading? Is it possible to remove them and re-download missing files? (I, however, noticed that Windows seems to re-download upgrade files after you restart 9879 and attempt to check for a new build.
Any clue why installing under VM causes 9926 to fail?
    Thank you in advance.
Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

    Hi,
According to the error message, this problem seems like update package installation failed during system upgrade.
You can try to remove ESD file which locate at boot of C drive and upgrade the system again for test.
On the other hand, make sure the system 9879 installed all Windows pushed updates before system upgrade.

  • Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0922

    Hi folks,
I have a HP Elitebook Folio 9470p.  It came with Windows 8, and I installed it on my corporate domain.  I was trying to do some Windows updates so  I could upgrade it to Windows 8.1, but it fails installing the updates, whether or not I try
to install them one at a time or all of them.  It has about 18 updates it needs from security updates to a .net framework update.  I run Symantec EP, and disabled it, checked for driver updates for things like display and networking and they are
    all up to date.
I'm at a loss as to what to do.  It gives this error in the event log for each file, Event ID 20.
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0922: Security Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2862152).
This is the example for KB2862152, but it gives the same error for every one.  I've tried to auto fix for Windows update issues and it fixed a couple of the issues, but not all of them, and provides no other help.
I also deleted folders and files from the SoftwareDistribution folder as well, to no avail.  Any ideas what I can do to get whatever updates it needs, so I can fully patch it, and upgrade it to Win 8.1?
    Thanks for any help!

Hi MM. Mr Kywildcat and Vegan Fan,
GOOD NEW ! At this time, my issue is solved. The only black side is "how ?" : I hope that we will get a response some day ; however, and for in information  pnly - hoping this could help someone - I resume some actions which allowed this the happy end
    1) about installing 8.1 : I wanted to be sure that gain/pain ratio was positive, and that upgrading from a (potentially) damaged system would'nt produce something looking like a new Win 8.1, but difficult to maintain and keeping some negative potentialities.
    2) I was influenced by the fact that this
0x800F0922  error acted as "a serial killerror", whose root cause could be a unique update error at reboot time concerning several (>20) packages, so I decided to test some manual upgrades.
    3)   Manual update (i.e. manual download and maunching of .msu packages) of the 2 following packages
(whose update previously failed on a Windows Update) was successful : .NET Framework version 3.5 for  x64 (KB2898866) and Camera Codec Pack Windows 8 for x64 (KB2899190)
    4) So I decided to try Windows Update on a selection of packages, first : those concerning .Net Framework 3.5 and 4.5 (that is: KB2898866, 2901120, 2898865) --> Successful !
    5) finally, I selected almost all other packages, with some exceptions wich I (think to) have no need for : KB2871690, 2904659, 2843630. To be complete, here is the list of pakages updated one time at all :
    KB 2892074, 2893294, 2893984, 2909210, 2912390, 2916036, 2889784,2903938, 2911101, 2913152, 2917499
    --> always succesful.
I am not a specialist, but I uess that this 0x800F0922 error hides another problem which is globally "H-RESULTED"
to all updates pending in one update operation with reboot. This could be assumed from this CBS.log exterped from my last wrong attempts, where root cause seems not to be
    0x800f0922, but 0x80004003 :
2014-02-15 21:29:13, Info                  CBS    Could not get active session for current session file logging [HRESULT = 0x80004003 - E_POINTER]
2014-02-15 21:29:13, Info                  CBS    Not able to add pending.xml.bad to Windows Error Report. [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]
2014-02-15 21:29:18, Error  CBS    Startup: Failed to process advanced operation queue, startupPhase: 0.  A rollback transaction will be created. [HRESULT = 0x800f0922 - CBS_E_INSTALLERS_FAILED]
Anyway, thanks to you who spent some of your time to describe issues and search/ suggest solutions ; I will upgrade my system to 8.1 anyway, some of this day, when I am sure that my configuration does not hides some other problem. I thing that potential
issue remains until maybe a new KB corrects it, wrong :-) ?
And I hope that you - Mr Kywildcat - can upgrade your system on "current levels" trying similar attempts.

  • Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070005

    Hi,
We are using Win Server 2008 R2 std. Server and Win 7 Professional X64 clients. During the second batch of update we got an Error while updating on one client machine and the system restoring back automatically However other clients are updating and working
fine. Then i tried to install the updates one by one manually then successfully installed all the updates except one ie. KB2862330. It keeps failing then i found an article suggest to check the update with Admin Previlage, disable Antivirus and Scan the
computer for Malware (Using MS Security Scanner and Malwarebytes). I tried both but never works. After that i got 2 batch of updates, everything is updating and trying to update this (KB2862330) and failing till date. What is the issue and why its not updating
    on one machine?
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070005: Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2862330).
    KB Article Followed : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968003/en-us

Okay, good. The SURT shows no errors.
So now we can blame the problem exclusively on the update itself.
And yes... there are still known, ongoing issues with KB2862330.
Truly, my suggestion is to just not install it at all. Unless you've identified a known risk via a USB vector on particular systems where the vulnerability would be considered a critical risk, I'd say that the risk caused by the vulnerability is significantly
less than the risk of additional headache caused by the update itself. I have still not deployed MS13-081 to any of my systems, and frankly, I don't plan to.

  • Windows Explorer misreads large-file .zip archives

I just spent about 90 minutes trying to report this problem through
the normal support channels with no useful result, so, in desperation,
I'm trying here, in the hope that someone can direct this report to some
    useful place.
There appears to be a bug in the .zip archive reader used by Windows
Explorer in Windows 7 (and up, most likely).
An Info-ZIP Zip user recently reported a problem with an archive
created using our Zip program.  The archive was valid, but it contained
a file which was larger than 4GiB.  The complaint was that Windows
Explorer displayed (and, apparently believed) an absurdly large size
value for this large-file archive member.  We have since reproduced the
    problem.
The original .zip archive format includes uncompressed and compressed
sizes for archive members (files), and these sizes were stored in 32-bit
fields.  This caused problems for files which are larger than 4GiB (or,
on some system types, where signed size values were used, 2GiB).  The
solution to this fundamental limitation was to extend the .zip archive
format to allow storage of 64-bit member sizes, when necessary.  (PKWARE
identifies this format extension as "Zip64".)
The .zip archive format includes a mechanism, the "Extra Field", for
storing various kinds of metadata which had no place in the normal
archive file headers.  Examples include OS-specific file-attribute data,
such as Finder info and extended attributes for Apple Macintosh; record
format, record size, and record type data for VMS/OpenVMS; universal
file times and/or UID/GID for UNIX(-like) systems; and so on.  The Extra
Field is where the 64-bit member sizes are stored, when the fixed 32-bit
    size fields are too small.
An Extra Field has a structure which allows multiple types of extra
data to be included.  It comprises one or more "Extra Blocks", each of
    which has the following structure:
           Size (bytes) | Description
          --------------+------------
                2       | Type code
2       | Number of data bytes to follow
            (variable)  | Extra block data
The problem with the .zip archive reader used by Windows Explorer is
that it appears to expect the Extra Block which includes the 64-bit
member sizes (type code = 0x0001) to be the first (or only) Extra Block
in the Extra Field.  If some other Extra Block appears at the start of
the Extra Field, then its (non-size) data are being incorrectly
interpreted as the 64-bit sizes, while the actual 64-bit size data,
further along in the Extra Field, are ignored.
Perhaps the .zip archive _writer_ used by Windows Explorer always
places the Extra Block with the 64-bit sizes in this special location,
but the .zip specification does not demand any particular order or
placement of Extra Blocks in the Extra Field, and other programs
(Info-ZIP Zip, for example) should not be expected to abide by this
artificial restriction.  For details, see section "4.5 Extensible data
    fields" in the PKWARE APPNOTE:
          http://www.pkware.com/documents/casestudies/APPNOTE.TXT
A .zip archive reader is expected to consider the Extra Block type
codes, and interpret accordingly the data which follow.  In particular,
it's not sufficient to trust that any particular Extra Block will be the
first one in the Extra Field.  It's generally safe to ignore any Extra
Block whose type code is not recognized, but it's crucial to scan the
Extra Field, identify each Extra Block, and handle it according to its
    type.
Here are some relatively small (about 14MiB each) test archives which
    illustrate the problem:
          http://antinode.info/ftp/info-zip/ms_zip64/test_4g.zip
          http://antinode.info/ftp/info-zip/ms_zip64/test_4g_V.zip
          http://antinode.info/ftp/info-zip/ms_zip64/test_4g_W.zip
Correct info, from UnZip 6.00 ("unzip -lv"):
    Archive:  test_4g.zip
Length   Method    Size  Cmpr    Date    Time   CRC-32   Name
    4362076160  Defl:X 14800839 100% 05-01-2014 15:33 6d8d2ece  test_4g.txt
    Archive:  test_4g_V.zip
Length   Method    Size  Cmpr    Date    Time   CRC-32   Name
    4362076160  Defl:X 14800839 100% 05-01-2014 15:33 6d8d2ece  test_4g.txt
    Archive:  test_4g_W.zip
Length   Method    Size  Cmpr    Date    Time   CRC-32   Name
    4362076160  Defl:X 14800839 100% 05-01-2014 15:33 6d8d2ece  test_4g.txt
(In these reports, "Length" is the uncompressed size; "Size" is the
    compressed size.)
Incorrect info, from (Windows 7) Windows Explorer:
    Archive        Name          Compressed size   Size
    test_4g.zip    test_4g.txt         14,454 KB   562,951,376,907,238 KB
    test_4g_V.zip  test_4g.txt         14,454 KB   8,796,110,221,518 KB
    test_4g_W.zip  test_4g.txt         14,454 KB   1,464,940,363,777 KB
Faced with these unrealistic sizes, Windows Explorer refuses to
extract the member file, for lack of (petabytes of) free disk space.
The archive test_4g.zip has the following Extra Blocks: universal
    time (type = 0x5455) and 64-bit sizes (type = 0x0001).  test_4g_V.zip
    has: PWWARE VMS (type = 0x000c) and 64-bit sizes (type = 0x0001).
test_4g_W.zip has: NT security descriptor (type = 0x4453), universal
    time (type = 0x5455), and 64-bit sizes (type = 0x0001).  Obviously,
Info-ZIP UnZip has no trouble correctly finding the 64-bit size info in
these archives, but Windows Explorer is clearly confused.  (Note that
"1,464,940,363,777 KB" translates to 0x0005545500000400 (bytes), and
"0x00055455" looks exactly like the size, "0x0005" and the type code
"0x5455" for a "UT" universal time Extra Block, which was present in
that archive.  This is consistent with the hypothesis that the wrong
data in the Extra Field are being interpreted as the 64-bit size data.)
Without being able to see the source code involved here, it's hard to
know exactly what it's doing wrong, but it does appear that the .zip
reader used by Windows Explorer is using a very (too) simple-minded
method to extract 64-bit size data from the Extra Field, causing it to
get bad data from a properly formed archive.
I suspect that the engineer involved will have little trouble finding
and fixing the code which parses an Extra Field to extract the 64-bit
sizes correctly, but if anyone has any questions, we'd be happy to help.

    > We can't get the source (info-zip) program for test.
I don't know why you would need to, but yes, you can:
          http://www.info-zip.org/
          ftp://ftp.info-zip.org/pub/infozip/src/
You can also get pre-built executables for Windows:
          ftp://ftp.info-zip.org/pub/infozip/win32/unz600xn.exe
          ftp://ftp.info-zip.org/pub/infozip/win32/zip300xn.zip
    > In addition, since other zip application runs correctly. Since it should
    > be your software itself issue.
You seem to misunderstand the situation.  The facts are these:
       1.  For your convenience, I've provided three test archives, each of
which includes a file larger than 4GiB.  These archives are valid.
       2.  Info-ZIP UnZip (version 6.00 or newer) can process these archives
correctly.  This is consistent with the fact that these archives are
    valid.
       3.  Programs from other vendors can process these archives correctly.
I've supplied a screenshot showing one of them (7-Zip) doing so, as you
requested.  This is consistent with the fact that these archives are
    valid.
       4.  Windows Explorer (on Windows 7) cannot process these archives
correctly, apparently because it misreads the (Zip64) file size data.
I've supplied a screenshot of Windows Explorer showing the bad file size
it gets, and the failure that occurs when one tries to use it to extract
the file from one of these archives, as you requested.  This is
consistent with the fact that there's a bug in the .zip reader used by
    Windows Explorer.
Yes, "other zip application runs correctly."  Info-ZIP UnZip runs
correctly.  Only Windows Explorer does _not_ run correctly.

  • Can't open iDVD 4 archive with iDVD 6.03

I am trying to open a project created in iDVD 4 with iDVD 6.03. I saved it as an archive and transferred it from my emac to my macbook pro. The file is 76 mb so I believe the photos and theme is saved in the archive. When I try to open the iDVD 4 archive with iDVD 6 it either crashes immediately or does nothing. By doing nothing I mean that the archive does not open and the menus are still available in iDVD 6. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't ask me how I figured this out because it was really just dumb luck. The problem seems to be that the font I used on the emac and iDVD 4 was not on the macbook pro with iDVD 6. Once I dragged the font across the network it opened up fine. Too bad iDVD 6 couldn't give me an error message telling me that there was a missing font like some other programs do...

  • Can Windows PC users open my .zip files?

I have uploaded a folder of photos that have been compressed to a .zip.
When PC users download it are they likely to have any problems opening the .zip ?
If so, what application will they need?

They are JPEGs but the zip is smaller.
The reason I have zipped them is because my "digital vault" will not accept a normal folder.
It just opens it and I have to select all the photos which I don't want to do.

If i attempt to close the Midi transform window, it wants to close the who project.
Any ideas on what i do!?
    Thanks

Thanks, but i'd already tried that and it didnt work.
I have managed to fix it though, and for anyone else with the same issue, here is what i did:
    Find your Logic project file
Right Click on the project, and choose 'Show Contents'
    Open the displayed folder 'LgDoc'
    Remove the file 'displayState'
open the project, and all should be good!

  • "New Message" Window Fails To Open

When I click on "New Message", no window opens up for me to compose an email. Does anyone know of anything that would cause this? How can I resolve this situation? Do I need to reinstall the program? Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

    HI,
Sounds like your Mail preferences are corrupted.
Launch Mail. From the Mac Mail Menu Bar click Mail/Preferences. Make not of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Mac Mail
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Trash.
The ~ (Tilde) character represents your Home Folder.
Now relaunch Mac Mail and click: New Message.

  • HT4623 I phone 5 failed to open up, black screen with apple logo only. Is this a software problem or change the battery?

My Iphone 5 originally came from Japan. Being resident of the Phil., I let a Technician open it by using x-sim. But now, the maximim charging is up to 3 minutes only. Later on it goes down to 1 minute until it stopped opening up. Only black screen with an apple logo appearing sometimes when plugged to power outlet. Tried to press the power on, but it still wont open.
What might be the caise of all this. Is this a software or hardware problem? Or is it the battery that the technician suggested?

When you answer your own question, you don't really need to post it in a support community.  Go to the technician and seek your solution there.  Apple can do nothing for you after unauthorized service.

  • Mouse failing to open folders and files with double click.

Mouse suddenly decided not to open anything with double click. It will highlight with single click but will not open files. Could I have a broken mouse? Could a virus be causing this? I have checked the mouse settings under System preferences and made sure my pc-using children have not set the mouse to second-click status. Any ideas?

Check back in system preferences > mouse > Double-click speed.  Move the slider to the slower end of the scale.

  • Forms runtime window fails to open successfully

Hi all, I have a user who cannot seem to get her Forms window to open correctly. She logs into Oracle. Selects the responsibility, selects the form she needs to open.
The middle window opens and the Forms Runtime window opens. However this Forms window never pppulates. It remains a blank screen.
I have cleared her jar cache and cookies and re-installed JInitiator too.
    Nothing seems to work.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Hi,
    What is the application release?
Do you have any pop-up blocker installed on this machine? If yes, disable all and check then.
Can you find any errors in Jinitiator Console Window? Any error in Apache log files (error_log and access_log)?
What if the same user from some other machine, is she able to open the form?
If none of the above helps, enable trace and see if you get more details about the issue.
