Windows fax & scan error
I can't seem to find a solution to my problem.
Just recently I am unable to send a fax. The recipient has 2 numbers and both do not go through.
When I try to send the fax; new fax>to,subject,message body(Cut & Paste)>send>dial tone>hand shake>sending page> X(stopped) "Fax can't be sent because of an unexpected error....") "Fatal error" shows in details.
I have sent over 30 faxes to these numbers using my current system; Windows 7 (x64), internal fax modem, AT&T U-verse
I have sent a test fax (just the word "Test" in the body) to an HP fax number an received a reply. No problems. I also went through 'Device Manager' to try to update the driver. [Everything is working properly and I have the latest driver installed]

Windows Fax & Scan (Windows 7 x64 Home Prem.)
I have a Pavilion DV6T-1378nr. It is equipped with an LSI HDA Modem.
Today, I cannot send any faxes via Windows Fax & Scan. I get a Fatal Error message when the 3rd page is being sent.
Yesterday, I was able to send faxes with no problems. In fact, I sent a 22 page fax and it sent perfectly.
I have searched google with no luck. Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

I put together a new system with a GA-X58A-UD3R and REVODRIVE + Win7 64bit and have the same problem but results in the BSOD and requires loading SSD drivers to recover.
I'm not 00% sure it's the X-FI card but the problem stopped when I removed the card and drivers. Using the on-board souns works but can't compare to the X-fi quality?or ALchemy effects when gaming.
I've had the system running stable for over a week now and am tempted to try the X-fi card again but it's extremely painful to recover from the crash..
I took this X-fi Xtrememusic card from my other computer which also ran Win7-64 and had problems with that one too but finally got them installed and working by installing them inthe "SAFE" mode. Once it was in it worked great. -
I am having some strange challenges in configuring Windows Fax & Scan. I have all Windows 7 - 32 & 64 bit Professional versions, and I am having trouble with the following:
1) On both 32 & 64 bit machines, the Forward as Email button is grayed out, despite Outlook being set as the default mail client. This issue seems to be only on machines with Office 2013.
2) On certain machines when I click New Fax and go to select Address Book to select an entry from AD, but I am unable to browse AD from the Windows Fax & Scan Contacts List

For your first issue ,we have checked the "Forward as e-mail " setting in our Windows 8.1 Enterprise machine installed with Office 2013 and it can be chosen .

How did you checked this ?We usually checked it in this path :Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs\Choose Outlook and then "Choose defaults for this program"
As an alternative choice ,we can use command " ftype | find /i "file type" " to check the association .
In our Windows 8.1 machine installed with office 2013,the file types will include these options:
Considering this is related to the office product too,it is recommended to ask help from our office forum at the same time .We may miss some configurations here.

Do you mean it is not available to set up fax server ? Have you got any errors ?
If that is the issue ,try to logon with an domian administrator account to have a check .

Windows Fax/Scan cannot fax through J4680.
My HP J4680 is connected wirelessly and all functions work fine, including fax. However, I would like to fax from the computer. Is this possible? Do I need additional hardware? Any help would be great.

"Could not complete scan" error when using Windows Fax and Scan with a HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus All-In-One network printer.
Printing is fine.
When using the HP Scan application, get the error "Scanner communication cannot be established".
When scanning from the printer itself it fails with the same message. In addition the printer panel displays the error:
"The scan could not be completed due to one or more of the following issues:
Connection to the computer is lost
The scanner is in use
OCR application is not installed"
My PC is a HP Compaq Pro 6300 SFF 64bit, with ethernet cable to the router and ethernet cable to the printer
Originally ran Windows 8.0; recently upgraded to Windows 8.1.
Older separate Netgear router and modem was replaced with a newer Netgear Router/Modem, but both experienced the same problem.
There was no problem with the original Windows 8.0 configuration and only after upgrading to 8.1 did the problem emerge.
On my home netowrk I have an HP ProBook 6550b running Windows 7 sp1 that uses wireless to get to the Router, and it has no problem with scanning.
I have followed the recommendations of a number of articles relating to this issue (including: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c02915410&product=4323659#N94), but there has been no change in behaviour.
The printer has a static IP address;
Power settings have been adjusted to Never for Turn off Hard Disk; Sleep and Hybrid Sleep.
Scanning has been tested with all firewalls and antivirus turned off and in Selective Startup.
The printer has been plugged directly into the power socket.
With all these settings the Windows 8.1 cannot scan while the Windows 7 laptop with wireless to the router has no problems.
Appreciate any insights into this problem.
I can only surmise that the problem is a compatibility problem between the 8600 Printer and Windows 8.1.
Any ideas?

MotorbikeYou can determine if there is compatiblity between the printer and PC by checking the Windows 8.1 hardware compatibility list. I have done that and it is shown to be fully compatible. If the driver you installed before was only the basic driver,it would explain the lack of scan and copy functionality.
Download and install the Windows 8.1 full feature driver and software on the HP Compaq Pro 6300 SFF 64bit PC .

Cannot send/receive Fax through Windows Fax and Scan
Having a problem with Windows Fax and Scan on Small Business Server 2011 Standard SP1. When I call the fax number, I can see the line ringing in the Fax Status Monitor, but it errors out with "The incoming call cannot be answered as a fax
call". I've also tried sending and receive an error: "No dial tone was detected" I've connected a regular phone to the line and placed an outside call and received a call from an outside line. No errors are logged in Event
Viewer, but If I check the Server Roles, Fax Server shows Event ID 32092, 32032 and 32031
Troubleshooting so far has consisted of:
Restarting Fax service
Removing/Readding the Fax Account in Windows Fax and Scan
Checked Print Spooler and Fax queue for held documents to clear (none)
Uninstalled/reinstalled the fax modem in Device Manager
Run Windows Update(several security updates pending)
Checked the DeviceToMonitor key in HKCU to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Fax\UserInfo matches the DeviceName key in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fax (at one point it did not match)
Removing/Readding the Fax Role. In the process, also removing registry keys: HKLM_SOFTWARE_MICROSOFT_FAX, HKCU_Software_Microsoft_Fax, HKLM_SOFTWARE_Microsoft_Windows_CurrentVersion_Telephony_CountryList, HKLM_SOFTWARE_Microsoft_Windows_CurrentVersion_Telephony_Locations.

On current situation, please refer to the following steps to troubleshoot. Then check if can find more clues
and help us to solve this issue.
Please verify if the incoming fax can be received from other fax machines.
For modem, please temporarily reduced the speed to 4800bps for the Fax software.
Please increase the
Rings before answering value for the fax device to 2 rings in Shared Fax Service Manager.
Just for a test. Would you replace the old modem with a new one? Then monitor the result.

I have a fairly new (purchased 8/2013) Lenovo ThinkPad T431s with Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit (updated from 8.0 -> 8.1). It has a very tricky error coming basically 8 / 10 boots:
Windows is Scanning and repairing drive...
Error details from Windows Event Viewer (a new similar error appears on every boot to event viewer):
A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume \?\Volume{f62db2cf-efe4-4b55-a3f7-0e7db991a984}.
A file on the volume is no longer reachable from its parent directory. The parent file reference number is 0x2000000000002. The name of the parent directory is "". The parent index attribute is ":$I30:$INDEX_ALLOCATION". The file reference
number of the file that needs to be reconnected is 0x400000003db80. There may be additional files on the volume that also need to be reconnected to this parent directory.
What has been done 1st trying to fix that:
SSD disk has been changed (image from previous SSD copied back) ->
no solution, error remains
chkdsk /F /R -> no solution, error remains
SFC /scannow -> no solution, error remains
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth -> no solution, error remains after a few boots
TRIED using Windows 8.1 "Update & Recovery -> Refresh Your PC without affecting your files" -> Inserted the Lenovo "Operating System Recovery Disk Windows 8 Pro (OEM Activation 3.0 Required)" BUT Windows did not accept
that DVD claiming "The media inserted is not valid"... ???
Ended up calling Lenovo Support and they instructed me to order the Recovery DVD from
Lenovorecovery.com -> Unfortunatelly Windows does not recognice the DVD(s)...
mountvol returns:

The chkdsk on the dirty volume

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or
other shadow copy data.
A snapshot error occured while scanning this drive. Run an offline scan and fix.
Diskpart output on the same volume:

1) Are my Partitions OK, haven't "touched" anything?
2) Excluded the dirty volume from boot checking with chkntfs /x
-> still the Error appears in Event viewer log (but Scanning is skipped/not shown anymore during the boot).
What is causing the error?
3) Why do I have three (3) recovery partitions?What has happened in the past days:
A) Lenovo on-site-Support changed the motherboard -> had no impact on the error (which I expected).
B) I found
instructions how to manually create USB Flash stick with a booting Custom (OEM) Recovery Image.
C) Booted with USB and performed "Refresh your PC without affecting your files."
D) Windows was refreshed but...

Still the error remains (Windows scanning and repairing drive \?\Volume{f62db2cf-efe4-4b55-a3f7-0e7db991a984} on each and every boot.

Now Lenovo support is proposing a full re-install (to be performed by myself) of Windows as this is SW issue.
Summary:
- Refreshing my T431s with OEM Image does not help
- The error remains on \?\Volume{f62db2cf-efe4-4b55-a3f7-0e7db991a984} (\Device\HarddiskVolume5; Lenovo Recovery partition) OR at least Windows thinks so... -
Cannot make Canon PIXMA MX922 fax to work with "Windows Fax And Scan" on Windows 7, 8.1
I have Canon PIXMA MX922 multifunction printer installed wireless on iMac OS X Mavericks. It works great but there is no fax drivers for Mac. I have Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 installed on Parallel Desktop. I am able to print and scan on these machines. I can scan using "Windows Fax and Scan" and other programs including My Image Gardens but no luck with faxing. I can send faxes using print function and chosing a Cannon MX920 series fax driver. The problem is to recieve faxes. I've connected MX922 wireless and wired with no help.
Does anyone have the same problem? Any ideas?Hi Anton,

In case this is going to fix itself in 25 hours I will check for the issue then. I'm gonna let you know whether the issues has disappeared.
But it sounds to me a little bit, like you have been expecting that behaviour? Have you? Especially within a Lab it is very confusing to have test clients which appear fully functional 25 hours after the setup has been succeeded.
I've followed your annotation and posted the log files on the Connect portal.

When printing from winnows fax and scan ( windows pro), I can not get the pages option to work. If I rec a 5 page fax and only want one of the pages I have to print them all. I have looked for a setting to check off or unchecked but have had no luck in finding one. Can anyone help?

- *click control panel > un-install/change a program > turn windows fetures on or off > uncheck fax & scan > restart your computer > then check the fax & scan again > check if issue persists.

We can try to update the driver for your scan and fax and meanwhile, we can contact the manufacturer to update the firmware of your device.
Also try to repair the Fax and scan components by turn off and turn on in Turn windows features on and off:
If the issue persists, please help to upload the event log here for further research.

Hi, My Computer is a Lenovo G50 (windows 8.1) and my Printer/Scanner is a HP Deskjet F4580 (F4580) All – in – one Series. The deskjet is connected wirelessly to my computer and prints documents OK but will not scan documents using ‘Windows Fax and Scan’. With my old computer I was able to scan documents. Can anyone help.

how to add a description to received faxes to make them easier to access later
We can do this with outgoing faxes, but cannot see where to do this with incoming faxes

No, there is no method to add the description for the received fax. You only add the flag "mark as read /mark as unread".
I could read the subject to know the synopsis. Furthermore, the Preview pane also could let you read the first page of the fax.
Click View-> Preview(marked), Add/Remove columns-> choose "Subject" to displayed columns -> OK.

Scan error 8, [(1, 0, -2147221500)] with Officejet 6310 all in one to Windows 7
Uninstalled, reinstalled, 3 times. Tested through Solution center& HP Print & Scan Doctor..unable to scan from an HP Officejet 6310 All-in-One printer, connected though USB to an HP Pavilion dv6 running Windows 7 home premium. CD too old to use. Downloaded every option for drivers, software, updates, tools, etc. from HP. Plugged, unplugged, restart, etc. NOTHING worked. Scan Doctor error at Driver, Registry, Communication. I see you're running into scan errors. I would like to help!
I would suggest Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Once it is uninstalled, I would suggest putting your system into clean boot mode within the Microsoft configuration. You can do so by following this document: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Once the computer is in clean boot mode, I would suggest reinstalling the HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows.
