  • Copying files from Mac to Windows-invalid file names

Unfortunately, my boss likes Windows more than Macs, so we have puchased some new Dell computers to replace older G4 Macs.
I'm having trouble copying existing files from a Mac (OS 10.4)to the shared drive on the Windows XP computer. I'm getting an error message:
"You can't copy the item 'filename' because the name is too long or includes characters that the disk can't display." Sometimes it doesn't give a filename, it gives a similar message "Some items couldn't be copied..."
I assume the person has used some "illegal" file names such as "Meeting minutes 10/7/07" Or maybe we have too many folders inside of folders.
QUESTION: Is there a correct/better way to copy large quantites of files/folders from Mac to Windows? Or is there a program that will look at the Mac files and alert me to wrong or too long files names?
Other ideas to copy these files?
    thanks,
    Bill

You can use a freeware utility like Renamer4Mac or BatchRename'em both of which have built-in filters that will rename files for Windows compatibility.
Thank you... This sounded to me like it would fix the problem, so I downloaded both and looked at them. However, the manual/help file is very sparse, so I don't know if it will do what I want to and how it would do it.
    1. I couldn't find any option in either program to: Look at all files in selected folder, and list any invalid file names for Windows.
    2. There doesn't seem to be an option to "rename files without bad Windows characters" or "Remove invalid for Windows characters"
I just couldn't find any explanation of how it was offering to rename the files. I can't rename all files to sequential names, that would make it hard to find a file later.
    Thank you,
    Bill

  • Is it possible to view ".mp3" files in Mavericks "Tags" windows by file name (rather than the info in the "name" field of it's ID3 tag)?

    Short version:
When viewing ".mp3" files in a "Tags" window, the information in the "name" column next to the file defaults to the information in the "song" field in the file's ID3 tag.
Is it possible to change have the "name" column display the actual FILE NAME instead?
I did some research and found nothing.
    Long version
    Let's say I have a ".mp3" file named "Todd Rundgren - Hello It's Me.mp3"
When I open the folder this ".mp3" is in and find the file, the "name" column will read "Todd Rundgren - Hello It's Me.mp3" (of course)
Now, I tag the file "jams"
Now I go to my "jams" tag view everything tagged "jams", the "name" column in that window DOES NOT say
"Todd Rundgren - Hello It's Me.mp3" , but instead just "Hello It's Me"
The finder seems to be pulling this information from the "name" field of the ".mp3" ID3 tag metadata (aka, the information that would be written in the "name" column when viewing the file in iTunes.)
Ok, that's fine Mavericks, but I want to see the ACTUAL FILE NAME of my ".mp3", (which "tags" windows seems to do for most other things [documents, folders])
Q: Is it possible to display the filename of a ".mp3" file when viewing a "tag window?"
Tags are super useful, but this inconsistency makes it inefficient, distracting, and confusing to move freely between the window for a given "tag", and a normal "finder" window.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I think you have to avoid editing inside the tags list with the 'metadata names'. Instead right click an item, select 'Open enclosing folder'.
In 'real folders' you can enable the 'Title' in column via the 'Veiw Menu > show columns', that way you can see the file name & ID3/ EXIF titles.
'Fake folders' (smart searches & the recent tags list) don't feel finished yet IMO.

  • Saving/exporting issue in Windows 7-file name changes when trying to navigate

I just got Windows 7 on my computer and am running ID CS5. The weirdest problem happens when I try to save as or export a file. The dialog box comes up and normally, I would be able to select a folder I want to navigate to just by typing the folder name, but what is happening is that the first letter goes to a folder, but upon typing the second letter, it starts changing the name of my file.
So for example, I am saving a file ABC.indd and I go to navigate to save it in a folder called Project XYZ. When I type in "P" to get to that folder name, it jumps right to the first folder starting with P. However, upon typing "r" my file name changes from ABC.indd to "r.indd." If I kept typing, it would become "roject XYZ.PDF."
This happens when saving as a file or if I am exporting a PDF. Our entire marketing department or 6 people was recently upgraded from XP to 7 and we all have this problem in ID. This does not happen in Illustrator or Photoshop and it has our IT department baffled. It is driving us crazy though because we make dozens of files a day and now have to manually scroll through long file structures when exporting PDFs, which is so time consuming, not to mention aggravating.
In searching for this problem, I found another poster on a different website who has the same issue, but no one had any suggestions.

Tell whomever is emailing the file to zip it first.

  • ITunes Windows 7 & File Names

Apple has a bug that's really annoying between the Mac and PC versions of iTunes. If you create a long folder and filename such as "The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers Part 1" on the Mac and then copy and import that on a Windows 7 machine authorized and running iTunes it truncates the filename for both the folder and video file. Not fun, and I hope this gets fixed soon!

Although iTunes is limited to 256 characters because of the way it stores file names and accesses the files, in principle Windows would allow longer paths. iTunes generated file & folder names are always limited to 40 characters (inc. any extension) for each folder and filename in the path so these are often truncated even though the practical limit of 256 characters would not be reached. I disable the *Keep iTunes Media folder organised* option and use a script to rename my files with longer titles and other personal preferences.

  • Windows shortens Font file name?

Hello, I just ran across what I believe to be an anomaly having to do with Windows Fonts.  When I install a Type 1 font named OP______.PFM after installation, the file name, as it sits in C:\windows\fonts is now, OP_____.PFM.  Yes, that is one
_ different then the original file name as it sits outside of the fonts directory.  Windows appears to have shortened the file name during the installation of the font.  We run SCCM 2012 and I wanted to know which PC's had this font installed so
I told SCCM to take inventory of OP______.PFM files in the Fonts directory .  Nothing ever showed up in my reports so I've been beating my head against the wall for 2 days now searching client and server logs. Until I found out the file name was
shortened.  I've since decided the % wildcard is my friend.  ;-)
Anyway, I am posting here to simply find out if this is known behavior and if so, are there other places in Windows where file names get shortened?
    Thanks for your time.

The most likely culprit is the font package itself.  The font name is specified within the package and it would have been an error by the programmer, not a Windows anomaly.

  • Music files in the Finder: File Names Obscured

    OS X 10.10.2.
When I search for music in the Finder, it returns metadata titles instead of the file names.
The reason I do a music search in the finder is to sort and edit the actual file names. Not happy.
General, Finder and Spotlight preferences just shrug at me.
    Any ideas?

    BeeblePete wrote:
If so, that's really unfortunate. It means I can't use search to see and resolve duplicate or inconsistent file names. It kind of dilutes the Finder's role as a file manager, when there's already an app for managing the metadata (iTunes).
Well, in Apple's world, you don't manage files. You manage Music, and Photos, etc.
If you just open a Finder window without searching, you can manage the files as files.
The best solution I can think of for the duplicates is to turn on the status bar. If you create a search folder for kind:music and sort by name, you'll see all the duplicate titles. When you select one, it will show the path at the bottom of the window, including file name. You can arrow between the files to determine where you have duplicates and delete or move as desired.

  • File name size

What is the maximum number of characters a file name should have? I was copying files from another Mac to a ZIP disk to put on my new iMac when copying stopped and reported an error relating to the files names. Some names were more than 22 characters. I shorten all name to less than 20 characters and no more problem.

In addition to Duane's advice, it may be the names of the files. Especially if the Zip disk is formatted for MS-DOS/Windows. If any of your files include any of the following characters, you'll have to change them to something else.
    ? [ ] / \ = + : ; " ,
Otherwise, file name length depends on the application or OS. Mac OS 9 or earlier is limited to 31 characters or less. OS X applications can be up to 256 characters. But if it's an older application that was updated to run natively under OS X, it may still be limited to creating file names of 31 characters.
MS-DOS is limited to an 8.3 name. Windows/Joliet file names can be 256 characters, but that includes the file name path. So a file on the C: drive with a path like c:\windows\system\ can be only as long as 256 minus the number of characters in the file path. In this case, 18 in the path leaves a usable file name of 238.

  • Parsing a File Name into A Timestamp and Applying it as Metadata

Hello,<br /><br />I am working on a lo-fi photographic documentation project, and the camera I am using does not record EXIF information. The extent of the metadata it provides is in the naming convention which is in the format of "DD-MM-YY_HHMM.jpg". • When saving a File OS Is Creating Multiple Folders With The Same File Name

Not sure what I changed but, now when I save a any file (ppt. word, Keynote,Pages e.g.,) to the desktop or any other location the OS will also create multiple file folders with the same file name as the file I'm saving. Inside the folders are what appears to be files locating the saved files. What can I do to fix this problem?
    I'm using the 10.7.2 version
    MacBook Pro

It looks like a finder bug. To replicate, I surf to any website, I right-click on a jpg image, select "Save Image As" and in the window that pops up I type in the filename "000.jpg", I select the folder Pictures, and click on Save.
BTW, I don't know why, but the file was saved only as "000" without the file extension ".jpg". Does anybody know why?
the extension is simply hidden. go to the get info panel for the file and uncheck the option to hide the extension.
Then I surf to another image, and again I save it as "000.jpg" and now it asks me if I want to replace the existing filename, although the existing one is "000" and I try to save as "000.jpg", so I say yes, and then magically the file is saved with the full filename including the extension "000.jpg"
When I did it a couple of times, always saving image as "000.jpg" from various sources, I ended up with two distinct files named "000" and both in the same folder Pictures.
    Please advise.
it sounds to me like you saved one file as 000.jpg and the other and 000.jpg.jpg.
check the info panels for the files for full names to verify if this is the case.

  • File Name Shortenings in Folders (Finder)

My question is if you can change the format of how shortened file names appear in folders.
The default is showing the beginning and ending of a file name:
"summer vacation photos" -> "summ...otos" (of course depending on how large the file icon is or how wide the column is)
I want to know if it is possible to change the settings to just show the beginning of the file name (the Windows default I guess):
"summer vacation photos" -> "summer vac..."
I just want to know because I find the Mac default to be difficult to read and to figure out what the file names are.

Use list view and expand the name column to display the entire name. Alternatively, use shorter names. As for changing how it's displayed, there's no built-in way to do it the way you want to.

  • File Name of Image Displayed in PSE 8 does not match File Path Name in Windows 7

I recently got a new computer  .I upgraded on my Windows XP computer from PSE 5.0 to PSE 8.0.  I then moved my files to the new computer running Windows 7 following the instructions I received on an earlier post.  I copied the catalog folder and the picture folders on the C drive from the old to the new computer (catalog folder to location specified in System Info;  images to My Pictures).   Everything appears to have worked beautifully without having to go through a big Reconnect struggle.  The organzer appears to have found all of the images and I can bring them up in Editor as well.  However, when I look at the properties of a given image the full file name displayed is what it was on XP, i.e., C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Pictures\<folder name>\<file name> rather than the path as it is in Windows 7, i.e., C:\Users\<user name>\My Pictures\<folder name>\<file name>.  I am new to Windows 7 so maybe I am missing something unique to Windows 7 but I would appreciate any information.

You're observing the special folder aliases that Vista and Windows 7 create to preserve backward compatibility (Microsoft keeps changing how and where users' documents are stored).   On Windows 7:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Pictures
is a special kind of alias to the folder:
    C:\Users\<user name>\Pictures
(And C:\Users<user name>\My Pictures is yet another kind of Windows 7 special alias, a "library", that includes the folder C:\Users<user name>\Pictures.)
Whenever an application like PSE refers to the old location, C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Pictures, Windows automatically translates that under the covers to C:\Users\<user name>\Pictures.   But Windows Explorer is configured to prevent you from accessing C:\Documents and Settings\ interactively -- only programs like PSE are able to do that.  Microsoft wants users of Windows Explorer to always use the "new" name,  C:\Users\<user name>\Pictures.
In your case, your catalog contained the old XP folder paths, and Windows is automatically translating them on the fly to the new paths, unbeknownst to PSE.
Like most such backward-compatibility hacks, this does not work perfectly.  PSE thinks that the old path and the new path refer to two completely different folders.  I'm not positive, but I think there are opportunities for PSE to get confused by that.   When you import new photos, they will get recorded in the catalog under the new folder paths.
In my previous recommendation for how to move to the new computer, I had assumed that you would most likely be changing user names and photo locations, and thus you would be forced to do a Reconnect, and you wouldn't have encountered this.  If I had thought you weren't going to need a Reconnect, I would have recommended not using this method but rather using Backup/Restore (my first recommended method)  -- my bad.
It may well be that your current catalog and PSE will work well enough.   But there is at least a small risk that down the road PSE will get confused by the old and new folder names.  The easiest way to avoid that risk would be to start over and use the Backup/Restore method for moving your catalog, whch is more effort on your part.  But because I don't fully understand the risk, I can't tell you whether you should be worried about it.   Definitely do some testing: editing, importing and editing new photos, use Display > Folder Location view, try renaming and moving old photos to new folders, try the Photo Downloader, etc.

  • Copy file name and info from finder window

I need to get the file name and file size for lots of files in lots of folders into a text file or excel file. I have found the way to copy the file path into text edit, but can't figure out how to copy all the info in a file window. Is there a way to do this?

    It's easily done with Terminal.
cd (drag folder into Terminal window, press return). Then:
    ls -l > ~/Desktop/list.txt
A file called "list.txt" will appear on your Desktop, containing a list of files from the folder, along with their modification dates, file sizes, and ownership/permission info.

  • Windows native file dialog default sort is by date instead of name

I somehow managed to get the Windows common file dialog default sort to be by date instead of name, so I have to resort by name every time I select a VI to load. I haven't been able to identify the registry entry that tell how the MRU list is sorted. How do I make the default sort by name instead of date, short of removing and reinstalling LabVIEW?

I think its a Windows issue and nothing to do with LabVIEW since LabVIEW just calls the MS common dialog. Do you see the same behaviour when using Windows Explorer? I know that with Win2K, I can set the default folder view to always sort by date. To go back to the default, select My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View>Reset All Folders. I don't have easy access to any computers with a different OS right now so I can't describe what the process is for them.
