Windows-formatted iPod getting recognized as if it was Mac-formatted

I have been using my iPod on a computer running Windows XP for about a year and just plugged it into a new laptop running Windows 7. This message pops up:
"iTunes has detected a Macintosh-formatted iPod. You must restore the iPod before you can use it on Windows"
...any ideas?

Hello smellhound,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Not sure what's going on, but have you tried resetting your iPod with it still connected? To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu button together until the Apple logo appears.
It sounds like you are going to have to restore the iPod as instructed in order to use your iPod with your new Windows 7 laptop. Very strange though...

  • Windows format / ipod not recognized

More of a 2 part question.
I am having the same problem as everyone else. Updated to 5.0 and 5.0.1 and my ipod is not longer recognized by itunes. I've followed all the different tutorials and "5 step fixes" and nothing works. I ran through the 5-step fix multiple times with each step being a success. Still itunes doesn't recognize the ipod and windows doesn't recognize it correctly. When I try to use ipod updater it either freezes or says "ipod service error"(something like that).
So without the ability to use ipod updater to install the new software or restore the ipod...my only option is to do a windows format of the ipod. If I do a windows format is ipod updater then going to work and let me install the software?
If you have any ideas of how I can fix it without formating that would be great, but I’ve done everything I could find on these forums with no avail.

    Hello heuriztic,
The problem very likely is due to your XP's USB port, try to connect with other port first, if not works, try to plug and replug your iPod with your PC and hope it can recognized.
It will be fine if you can find a way to format your iPod with your PC. I am a bad PC user, but I believe you cant format it without a 3rd party software. I faced the same problem as your with my brother's iPod, I managed to solve it by first refomatted it by my Mac, and do a restore of iPod update with the PC afterward
It really works and hope you can find a friend with a Mac machine for you to fix your problem

  • Upgrading Software on Windows formated iPod

I have a 5th generation iPod I bought when I used a PC laptop. When I bought it, it said it was formated for Windows. I'm now using a Macbook Pro and when I connect my iPod, I get a prompt that says only Mac formated iPods can be upgraded. Can I reformat my Ipod so that I can upgrade the software? Can it run the new Cover Flow version of the iPod software?
    Thanks,
    Jake

*Can I reformat my Ipod so that I can upgrade the software?*
Restore the iPod on your Mac. Restoring in iTunes for Mac will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Mac version and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7
*Can it run the new Cover Flow version of the iPod software?*
Cover Flow is only available on the newer iPods, the software update will not add this function to older ones.

  • Mac formatted iPod (DRM free content) - convert to play on Windows Media Pl

I have converted all of my iTunes songs to m4a RDRM free formats. Now I want to connect my Mac-formatted iPod to my work Windows PC and transfer the music files so Windows Media Player can play them. I have seen several cumbersome solutions and I do not want to install iTunes on my Windows box. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Mac formatted iPods can only be used on a PC that has a third party helper program such as XPlay or MacDrive installed

  • Can I use my windows format iPod mini on an apple powerbook?

I've got a pc and an iPod mini whit windows format. If I buy a powerbook can i use my ipod(Windows) whit it?

    NO!!!
    Uh, you are wrong.
The guy that said yes probably assumes you just want to use your ipod as a hard drive
No, I assumed he wants to use it as a hard drive as well as to upload music, notes and contacts.
You obviously do not have much experience using iPods with both Windows & Macs.
You won't be able to upload songs to your ipod with a powerbook.
Sure he can. It works fine with no problems at all.
You'd have to format the ipod with the Mac
Again, no he will not have to format it to use on a Mac.
A Mac formatted iPod can only be read by a Mac. Windows cannot read a Mac formatted iPod.
A Windows formatted iPod can be used on both Windows and Macs. Macs DO know how to read & write to a Windows formatted Ipod.
Don't risk it unless you have one of these overpriced power adaptor that Apple wants a fortune for (it's not but a small transformer, gimme a break, Apple)
You only need an AC power adapter when restoring the 1st generation Mini. The 2nd Gen mini does not require it.
And it is $29 from the Apple store. To you, that is a small fortune?

  • Itunes library is on a mac formatted external hdd: can windows recognize it

subject pretty much says it all. can windows recognize my mac formatted external hdd? i know when i had my ipod formatted to windows, the mac recognized it, but will the mac formatted drive allow windows to see it, play the music, and possibly move it to my ipod?
    thanks!!!

Default, Windows will not recognize Mac formatted disks.
A number of applications can enable Windows to read them.
Take a look at this page: http://www.macwindows.com/disks2.html
I don't have experience with any of the apps. mentioned on that page, so I can't tell you how they perform.
Maybe posting in the iTunes for Windows forum will result in specific information.

  • Mac formatted i pod - windows operating system

I just received a new ipod that my friend programmed with many tunes. When I tried to upload them - via the docking station - to my PC, the message told me the ipod was mac formatted and that I should reset to factory settings. Problem is that I lose all the songs!. Anyway around this??
    Help please.
      Windows 2000

Windows cannot natively recognize a Mac-formatted drive, including an iPod. You'd have to purchase third-party drivers, such as MacDrive, to get your Windows system to recognize your iPod.

  • IPod nano gen 4 Mac formatted: if I do a PC format, will it wipe out existing songs, audiobooks etc.?

My PC wants me to format the nano. Will this cause all the existing data to be wiped out and the Mac reformatted to work on that computer again?

Niel, does this mean a PC (Windows 7) formatted ipod nano can be synched on a Mac (with songs, etc.) and comingled with data previously synched from the PC? What I would like to do is download into the ipod nano stuff from both the PC and the Mac with the PC being the primary computer connected to the nano.

  • IPod not recognized by iTunes, Windows Vista prompts to format iPod drive

    Hello,
I have IPod 80GB which I rarely use. Yesterday  when I wanted to use it, I went to add a few new audios to it, connected to my computer and launched iTunes. I added the folder which contained audios to iPod, synced it and wanted to disconnect, but iTunes took excepionally long to finish.
When I clicked on 'eject' icon, I go a message saying 'some files are being accessed' or something like that. I waited for 5-10 minutes but it won't finish up, so I unplugged my iPod as I had to leave.
Later when I wanted to play, I noticed I had no audios in iPod at all.
Later when I got home, connected it again to computer, launched iTunes, but iTunes won't show iPod. A few minutes later, windows (Vista) prompted a message saying that it needs to format N: drive (which was iPod).
I tried diagnostics on tis site, restarted/reset iPod etc, but it didn't solve the problem. I removed and reinstalled iTunes as per instructions, still no use.
Then I called Apple support Canada and the guy on the phone said I need to pay to get support. He said he'd send me some documents via email which would solve the problem and hen I wouldn't have to pay. I gave him my email address, but so far I have recieved no emails from him. I have checked my spam and junk folders, just in case, but nothing there.
Anyhow, this issue came up all of a sudden, there has been no physical damage to iPod, I barely use it. maybe for few minutes here and there a month. I have had numerous problems in the past every time a new iTunes update come, it always creates problems. Last year I spent many hours after iTunes update make iPod unrecognizable so I had to go back to older version, then upgrade etc. I don't remember how I solved the issue, but it took a while and it turned out to be something of iTunes version issue.
I wonder if this is another of such issue. I hope its not a hardware issue with iPod. I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks

I just got Vista too and it does recognize my ipod, but itunes can't find a lot of my songs on the computer. I tried to uninstall itunes and reinstall it thinking that it would seach for new music when I installed it again but nothing new happened when I did that.

  • Getting my Windows formatted Ipod to update on a mac

I imagine this is a fairly common question, but I have been unable to update my windows formatted ipod on my mac. It tells me that I have to restore it to it's factory settings and reformat it to mac. This would seem to cause me to lose all my songs. Seeing as how I don't know of an easy way to temporarily store my songs on the desktop, I was wondering if there was a way to update without me having to lose all my songs.

I just found that I have this same problem. Does the solution you suggest meant hat once I download YamiPod I launch it on my Mac (keeping iTunes closed) and then connect my iPod? Do I then use YamiPod to copy my entire iPod library to my Mac, launch iTunes to reformat the iPod to a Mac, close iTunes and then use YamiPod to copy the songs previously on my iPod from my Mac back to my iPod?
Just trying to understand all this before I completely ruin everything and screw myself (I'm not so tech saavy).
    Thanks.
