Windows freezes Ipod is connected

All of a sudden windows freezes when Ipod is connect to computer. I have tried multiple USB ports. Problem started when wife bought one of those tiny Ipods. Would apprecitate any help

Usually theres no need for this, cuz when you uninstall iTUnes it does not erase the iTUnes Library, nor any music on the PC.
That said its always a GREAT idea to back up your music regularly. Apple covers this on there site by using iTUnes to burn backups on CD, but it doesn't include backup of the all important iTunes Library file that contains all the playlist rating playcount Ect ect here it is tho http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93033
Long as you have all your music in one folder like "My Music" you can just copy it to an external Harddrive. that will backup all the music AND all the iTUnes librarys and crap since its in the "My Music" folder by default

  • IPod not mounting...Windows freezes when I connect Ipod.

This has happened to me a couple times lately. I'll connect my iPod (4G, 40GB) and ITunes and, sometimes, the rest of Windows just kinda freezes up on me. As soon as I disconnect the cable, everything goes back to working fine (except, of course, I can't transfer any music).
Also, the iPod itself seems to be a bit loony. I can hear the disk whirring for a couple seconds, then it stops, couple seconds, then it stops. Once or twice, it's rebooted on its own.
The last time this happened to me, a couple weeks ago, I had to reinstall ITunes 3 or 4 times before things finally worked out OK.
I've tried the "5 Rs" and I've seen the Exclamation Point icon once or twice...I was looking into the thread discussing that (with partitioning the drive, etc.). I'd rather not do that if I don't have to.
    Anybody have ideas?

I am having the same problem, I can sometimes get into disk mode and half the time I can't. My CPU doesn't recognize it when I plug it in. And usally when I plug it in while in Disk Mode it goes back to the apple symbol and then the sad ipod icon

  • Windows freezes when I connect my iPod

I just got an iPod Nano. It works perfectly on my girlfriend's computer but has serious problems on mine. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 8600 (noteboook), she has an HP notebook. Problems:
    - Explorer becomes really sluggish (but for some reason firefox works fine)
    - It never stops saying "do not disconnect" even after I left it connected all night
    - If I restart my computer with it connected the BIOS will not finish its POST
    - It only sometimes shows up in iTunes / My computer, but it causes my computer to run so slowly I can't do anything with it anyway
Basically, it freezes explorer and iTunes so bad that I can'at do anything with it. Please Help! Thanks.

Oh, this is embarrassing. I fixed it. The problem was that I had shut off something important in startup :S
Sorry everyone, it works fine now

  • Windows freezes up when connecting iPod

I've been using my iPod with no problem for months, but when I connected it last monday to put some new songs on there it froze up windows. First I thought it might be a problem with the new iTunes installation. Reinstalled it and got the exact same results.
I then thought it might be a good idea to reset the iPod to factory settings and cleaning out all the music on there, but it froze up windows then to. When I disconnect the iPod its all back to normal again. To exclude my computer I installed the updater on my laptop, fresh XP SP2 install and got the same thing on there. Has this happened to anyone before or does anyone know a way to fix this problem?

He wouldn’t be able to see it in windows explorer if that was the case my friend. If you can’t see the iPod go to Start > Run type compmgmt.msc OK that. Select Storage then Disk management. If you can see the Ipod change the drive letter path to a free letter. For example Z.
This would be the first thing to check before trying other things especially if you have a few removable drive/media.

  • Windows Apple iPod Camera connected??????

When I hook my iPod Touch up to sync I get the above Windows message asking which of the following I want to select to launch the program:
    Office Publisher
    Office Word
    Scanner and Camera Wizard
I do not get the option to "Take no action"
It doesn't effect the sync process and is more of an annoyance - anyone got any ideas?
    Cheers

A couple of things might be happening. To deal with just that problem, follow the steps in this troubleshooting document: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1857
If the iPod is still not recognized correctly, a piece of software, Apple Mobile Device Services, is either not installed or not running. To check that and correct the problem, see this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
Between the two, you should be up and running. If not, let us know.

  • Itunes freezes when ipod is connected to windows 7

I have had to return a new ipod after spending numerous hours going through the suggested fixes on this site to cure the problem with itunes.
Itunes works fine until the ipod is connected to the computer and then it freezes itunes after a couple of seconds.
I have completely removed and re-installed itunes several times, tried disabling drivers etc along with all the other methods suggested on this site and to no avail. Even the store helpline could not get the ipod to work with the computer after an hour on the telephone and remotely accessing the computer!!!!
This seems to be a recent problem, as an older ipod worked fine until the last two versions of itunes updates were released. Since then, no joy! Even uninstalling itunes and installing an earlier version does not cure the problem. Can someone at Apple get a grip and sort out this issue, as the current itunes seems to be littered with problems? Try a search on Google and you will see what I mean. This is a major issue with thousands of people.
Apple have lost the sale of one new ipod in this instance as I could not get it to work

I've had my 80GB ipod video since October. Its never frozen before or anything like that.2 Days ago,I connected it to the computer and a few seconds later, the computer froze.Ever since, everytime I connect it,Windows freezes.I don't think there is a problem with the USB cable because it carges fine on my plug and also after the computer freezes,it keeps charging but no "Do Not Disconnect" on the screen.Thing is,it says "Do Not Disconnect" before th computer starts and then it stops and charges as soon as the Windows XP logo comes up and then the computer doesn't even start, freezes at the Windows XP screen.Help would be much appreciated.
    Thank You

  • Windows recognizes iPod, but not iTunes or iPod updater, causes freezing

I'm having some issues with my 60GB iPod Photo. I tried to store my friend's music on my iPod as files. Upon uploading them to my own computer, some files caused freezing, requiring me to disconnect and reconnect the iPod. I finally gave up and deleted all the files stored on my iPod. All of a sudden, although Windows XP Pro recognized that an iPod was plugged in, it would no longer open iTunes automatically. When opening iTunes once the iPod was plugged in, it would cause iTunes to freeze.
I decided to restore my iPod. About halfway through, there was an error message saying my iPod could not be restored. All songs were deleted but my iPod was still not recognized. Now, the iPod updater does not recognize that in iPod is connected, even though Windows does. The updater freezes, inhibiting me from completing my restore. iTunes freezes as well when my iPod is plugged in. My iPod displays "update in progress - do not disconnect," but nothing happens. When my iPod is not connected to the computer, I can navigate through it normally, although it does need to be unfrozen when left unused for a couple of days. I cannot tell if it plays files because they were all removed during my unsuccessful restore.
I have tried reinstalling all my iPod related software and I have tried my iPod on more than one computer with different USB cables, but nothing works.
    Help, please!

This is exactly the same problem that I am having I have posted on 14th March on itunes forum. I wish you luck I wait with interest to see what someone says. My ipod was working like a dream until i downloaded the update

  • ITunes freezes (SWOD) when iPOD is connected

Since the latest iTunes upgrade to 7.7.1, iTunes freezes (SWOD) when my iPOD is connected. Worse, if one clicks on iTunes to make it the foreground application, the entire system becomes frozen and only powering off/on with the power button gets the system back (unless one forgets to disconnect the iPOD in which case one is back where one started).
This is an old iPOD that uses a firewire connection. Given how difficult it is completely crash a *nix-based system, I suspect a hardware interrupt is behind this but who knows? Searching the knowledge base and forums hasn't lead to any solution.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

You mean a clean install or system restore of Windows Vista?
Wow -- I hope it doesn't take something that extreme...
(And again: gawd I hate Windows!)
Any other suggestions of things to try/look at before resorting to that?
Also -- when I go to Device Manager, there are no issues at all in the USB controllers list -- and in fact my iPod isn't listed there at all. However, in the "Portable Devices" section , my iPod is listed there -- and the properties says that the driver is provided by Microsoft (not Apple) and is dated 6/21/2006 and is version 6.0.6001.18000

  • After updating itunes to 10.5.3, two of my ipod classics no longer are listed under "devices" when connected to the computer. They are visable in windows as ipod but i cannot access them.  there is nothing i can do to get itunes to recognize them.. help

ive tried restarting the apple service, wiping the ipods, restoring one of the ipods when itunes found it the first time but that never completed (Itunes froze out eventually) and now itunes does not recognize either device.  Additionally, itunes works fine when no ipods are connected, but when i connect these two classic ipods itunes freezes non-responsive.  there is no now way to connect the ipods to itunes and there is no music either.  ive seen others with similar issues (appearing in windows but not itunes) but all of the suggestions are not working.  any help would be appreciated.
    thank you.

iPod Classic are high drain USB devices, I hope you are not trying to connnect them simultaneously to iTunes, which will definitely hang your USB Host controller, thereby freeze iTunes.
But here is an Apple Support Article on using multiple iPods for iTunes.

  • My itunes freezes when I connect my ipod....help!!

I have installed the new update (Windows 8 64 bit)  & my itunes freezes when I connect my ipod.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • Itunes freezes when I connect my ipod....possible corrupt file?

I reinstalled itunes to the latest version.
And I'm still having the same problem: My itunes freezes whenever I connect my ipod. And when i disconnect it, it unfreezes and it shows "My Ipod" in itunes for like a second then goes away.
Now, when I reinstalled again, i noticed a message saying that Windows is missing components required to fully install Itunes (itunes installed anyway) or something like that. Now, i connected it to my parents' pc and it works fine.
Is there something wrong with my pc? Is there a different program where i can transfer my music to my ipod? (I am using Windows XP btw)
Also is there a way to move all the songs on my ipod to an external hard drive?

    Similar problem here:
When I'm playing songs with iTunes and connecting my 3G 20GB iPod, my computer will hang up completely - screen goes dark and I have to reset my PC.
However, when my iTunes is "idle", i.e. not playing a song or doing anything else, connecting and syncing the iPod will work just fine.
I'm using the newest (6.x) Version of iTunes on WinXP SP2 with a 3G iPod 20GB.
