Windows freezes when ipod is connected but charges fine-HELP!

I've had my 80GB ipod video since October. Its never frozen before or anything like that.2 Days ago,I connected it to the computer and a few seconds later, the computer froze.Ever since, everytime I connect it,Windows freezes.I don't think there is a problem with the USB cable because it carges fine on my plug and also after the computer freezes,it keeps charging but no "Do Not Disconnect" on the screen.Thing is,it says "Do Not Disconnect" before th computer starts and then it stops and charges as soon as the Windows XP logo comes up and then the computer doesn't even start, freezes at the Windows XP screen.Help would be much appreciated.
Thank You
Ian

Usually theres no need for this, cuz when you uninstall iTUnes it does not erase the iTUnes Library, nor any music on the PC.
That said its always a GREAT idea to back up your music regularly. Apple covers this on there site by using iTUnes to burn backups on CD, but it doesn't include backup of the all important iTunes Library file that contains all the playlist rating playcount Ect ect here it is tho http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93033
Long as you have all your music in one folder like "My Music" you can just copy it to an external Harddrive. that will backup all the music AND all the iTUnes librarys and crap since its in the "My Music" folder by default

  • Windows freezes when iPod is connected

    Hey everyone!
My iPod has been working perfectly and still plays music like it always has. However, I want to add some new music to it, so I hook up the iPod to my computer and after about 3 or 4 seconds, my computer freezes completely. I have to shut off the computer and restart to get things working again.
What's wrong and how do i fix it?

  • ITunes crashes on exit when iPod is connected, but not otherwise?

I had this problem ever since I installed iTunes 7...
It occoured as soon as I installed the new verison while still using my old 4gb first gen. iPod nano.
Now I just recently bought a new second generation nano, and still have the same problem.
And the issue is, Whenever I close iTunes while my iPod is connected (but not being updated), i get the message that "iTunes.exe has preformed an illegal operation and will be closed".
Though I just noticed that if I disconnect the iPod before closing itunes, it closes fine and normally.
I Have tried to solve it by following toturials for uninstalling both just iTunes, and iTunes + QuickTime at the same time, and preform separate installations after cleaning the temp. folder and restarting. None of it has helped me solve the problem
-And I have lived with ifor a while, but it is getting really annoying if I am sititng on my computer and jsut close iTunes, without disonnecting my iPod, to run another program using sound or a lot of system resources. And thne each time get the error-message that "iTunes preformed an illegal operation and..."
Anytihng that can be done? -I run NO plugins for the record, and the iPod is connected by USB cable (seeing it is a Nano)
Anything anyne can suggest that I'd do, then please tell.
-Or if anyone need to know more then please ask.

Hi, Im sorry just to add on to this discussion but I couldnt figure out how to start a new discussion and I am going mad! I have a new ipod because my last one was stolen and I have plugged it in and my PC wont recognise it. I think that is because my old ipod is the only one my computer will accept. Can that be right? It said the hardware device had been detected and then it said that it was troubled and it simply did not work. Now it is plugged in and not at all recognised in my computer anywhere. Can any one help this clueless girl who simply wants to listen to music again?
    Thank you.

  • Itunes freezes when ipod is connected to windows 7

I have had to return a new ipod after spending numerous hours going through the suggested fixes on this site to cure the problem with itunes.
Itunes works fine until the ipod is connected to the computer and then it freezes itunes after a couple of seconds.
I have completely removed and re-installed itunes several times, tried disabling drivers etc along with all the other methods suggested on this site and to no avail. Even the store helpline could not get the ipod to work with the computer after an hour on the telephone and remotely accessing the computer!!!!
This seems to be a recent problem, as an older ipod worked fine until the last two versions of itunes updates were released. Since then, no joy! Even uninstalling itunes and installing an earlier version does not cure the problem. Can someone at Apple get a grip and sort out this issue, as the current itunes seems to be littered with problems? Try a search on Google and you will see what I mean. This is a major issue with thousands of people.
Apple have lost the sale of one new ipod in this instance as I could not get it to work

  • PC freezes when iPod Touch is fully charged

Has anyone experienced this problem before? : When my iPod Touch is connected over USB to a PC and it's (almost) fully charged, all of a sudden the entire PC freezes. Moving the mouse or typing anything on the keyboard has no effect; everything is completely frozen. The only thing I can do is reboot the PC. Also, when this happens, the iPod wakes up (it shows its "Slide to unlock"-screen). Apart from that, the iPod itself still functions normally.
I didn't have this problem until recently so I'm suspecting it's either a bug in one of iTunes' background services (since iTunes isn't running when this problem occurs) or the iPod's firmware. I've got a first-generation iPod Touch with firmware 2.2 and iTunes 8.0.2.20, running on Windows XP Pro SP3. Also, I connect my iPod to the PC using a universal dock (current model).
I have already tried reinstalling iTunes and tried using different USB ports, but that didn't make any difference. Currently I'm trying to see whether it helps to connect the iPod to the PC without the dock. I'll also try to see what it gives if I am running iTunes whilst charging.
I've also seen some forum posts elsewhere with similar issues, but none of these are of much help. (http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1067146 , http://forums.ilounge.com/archive/index.php/t-162474.html and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=795077)
Does anyone have some more info on this problem? Thanks!

You're right about the random thing; at first I thought it only happened when the iPod was fully charged, but it has also happened on random occasions...
Anyhow, I actually managed to get my iPod Touch (1G) charging again, without freezing the computer. The downside is that I can't sync.
    What I've done is this:
    * I have moved back to the latest version of iTunes (8.0.2.20). I also have the latest firmware on the iPod Touch (2.2).
    * I have disabled the following Apple services/startup-programs: iTunesHelper, AppleSyncNotifier and Apple Mobile Device
To do this: Go to Start > Run,
then type "msconfig" (without the quotes), click OK,
then go to the "Services" tab, remove the checkmark on "Apple Mobile Device",
then go to the "Startup" tab, remove the checkmarks on "iTunesHelper" and "AppleSyncNotifier",
then click OK and you'll be asked to restart the computer.
    * When the computer has restarted, a window'll be shown that says you've modified your configuration... You'll probably want to check the checkbox in this window; otherwise this window'll pop up every time the computer restarts...
Now your iPod Touch should be able to safely charge without freezing the computer. When you start iTunes now, you'll get the message that says the iPod won't work because the Apple Mobile Device-service hasn't started.
I have disabled this Apple Mobile Device because I'm quite positive it's the cause of all this freezing. If you do need to sync your iPod, it's possible to enable the Apple Mobile Device-service for a while, and then disable it again.
Just do the following to start it:
    * Go to Start > Run
    * Type "services.msc" (without the quotes) and click OK
    * In this new window, look for the "Apple Mobile Device" entry in the list; double-click it.
    * Change "Startup type" from "Disabled" to "Manual"; click "Apply".
    * Click the "Start" button in this window to start the Apple Mobile Device-service.
    * Click OK and then close the "Services" window.
    * iTunes will now recognize the iPod Touch again, but the you'll be at risk of freezing the computer...

  • ITunes and Computer freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my video ipod to my computer (dell desktop) the system freezes, as in it will not respond to mouse clicks and keyboard (but can still get to task manager). When I unplug the ipod it comes back to life. Programs always freeze, but sometimes I am able to navigate within windows without it freezing, but as soon as a program is brought up, my computer falls to its knees.
I have the latest version of iTunes, and updater v. 1.1, (but I have not been able to update the firmware yet from v 1.0).
The odd thing is last night I was able to download several gigs worth of music to it without incident. I then tried to load movies (they were in the wrong format, but I didn't know it at the time), and so in an effort to correct that I uninstalled itunes, the ipod drivers, and the ipod updater programs several times.
I cannot update the ipod firmware because the computer freezes when the ipod is plugged in, so the program freezes as well. Kind of a catch 22 situation.
I have been over the forums and help archives for about an hour and a half now and I have come up dry.
Windows XP does recognize the ipod when the cable is connected, and the ipod flashes, "Do not disconnect", which it is supposed to do.
I suspect this is drivers/software, but I have no idea where to go from here.
    Help?

    Hey!
That EXACT thing happened to me! 2 nights ago I'm downloading like crazy, all is well. I got on LimeWire and downloaded some videos and tried to put them on my iPod. Imported them into iTunes then tried to put em on my iPod and it completely wiped out all my songs! So I get back on, put the songs back in, and about half way through the update the thing freezes. I've re-installed everything, and have reset my iPod. Did you figure out what to do? Maybe your fix will fix my problem, too.
    Thank you!

  • ITunes freezes when syncing with iPhone, but works fine with iPod?

It's a bit of a long story with my iPhone/iTunes problem. In late July, my iPhone stopped syncing properly. It's an iPhone 4. Basically, I tried to add more photo albums to sync onto my phone, something I have done before. It began syncing, then notified me that it couldn't sync 'x' amount of photos. It was a pop up on my phone screen. I tried deleting my cache in My Pictures, still errors. Then it seems like everything possible has just glitched when I sync as weeks went on. It wouldn't sync music. The songs would appear gray and failed to play. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it doesn't. Now, iTunes freezes when it reaches the end of the sync and I have to ctrl+alt+del to close iTunes as it stops working.
I took my iPhone to apple, and she ran diagnostics and couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. She told me she couldn't run diagnostics on my iTunes because it's a Windows laptop and she's "not trained to work with them". She said everything seemed fine with my iPhone and asked if it was possible if I have a virus. I've had no other problems with my laptop whatsoever and I have a decent virus protector that we pay for monthly.
I have tried restoring my phone twice, with a backup. I tried again WITHOUT a backup, and still, it freezes when it syncs, some songs are gray on my iPhone and won't play, and photos refuse to sync, period.
I then tried syncing my dad's iPod with my iTunes, and it worked. I also tried syncing my iPhone on my dad's laptop, and it worked. So something is clearly glitching between specifically my phone and my iTunes. I'm avoiding uninstalling iTunes at all costs because I don't want to lose play count information as the majority of my playlists are created this way. I thought iOs 7 or iTunes 11 (now 11.1) would fix it, but neither did.
Can anyone determine what the problem could be and how to fix it?

the same thing is happening with me. itunes will freeze and then it wont put songs on my ipod.
im starting to get upset since i just went out and bought a new ipod. thinking that was the problem.
    PLEASE HELP!!!

  • Itunes freezes when ipod is connected to computer

Whenever I try to connect my ipod to my laptop my itunes will freeze up. I try opening my ipod using "my computer" but then that will freeze up as well. I'm trying to restore my ipod to see if that will help, but since my itunes freezes, it can't detect my ipod, therefore I can't restore it.
My ipod is set to where I have to manually put songs on it instead of it syncing automatically (unsure if this has anything to do with the problem?)
My itunes and ipod work perfectly by themselves, and I haven't had a problem with connecting my ipod to the computer until now. I can't figure out how to fix the problem. Help!
(I've also plugged my ipod into every usb port on the computer and it doesn't make a difference).

    so does mine

  • Ever since I downloaded ios7, my iPhone 4s keeps freezing when trying to connect to wifi. Help?

My iPhone 4s keeps freezing whenever I try to connect to wifi. It either won't even open wifi, and when it does, it'll freeze as soon as wifi is open. I can force quit the settings area, and it unfreezes the iPhone, but it doesn't fix the settings area, which is still frozen. I have come to points when I can connect to wifi, but it only lasts about 30 seconds before dropping the connection. This happens everywhere, even at home, when I'm right next to the router. What should I do?

Try resetting your settings. Settings > General > Reset.
I had this happen shortly after updating and it worked when I reset.
    Doesn't delete anything though.

  • Windows PC freeze when Ipod mini connected

    Hi,
I've had my my Ipod for just over a year now and have had no problems so far but last night a serious one occured. I was going to put more music onto the ipod and added the files I wanted to the library. I then connected the USB cable into a port and then into the Ipod mini.
2 or 3 seconds after connection to mini ipod my computer freezes and I had to reset it at the machine.
I have since tried several times to connect my ipod mini to the computer to install the additional music but each time the PC freezes and has to be reset. I have installed the itunes 6.3.5 (?) but with no change.
Could anybody please tell me why this may be happening and what I could do to resolve the issue?
Thank You if you can assist me.

I have had the same problem and cannot resolve it have you had an answer?

  • PC does not recognze iPod, freezes when iPod is connected.

I have a refurbished (I needed my original replaced last spring) 20G Photo. My computer runs on Windows XP.
One week ago it froze, and when an album or artists was slected to be played, it would skip from one song to the next without actually playing anything. It also refused to power down - I had to let it turn off by itself. This is what my original iPod had done when it died. However, this one fixed itself after I reset it.
Yesterday it froze again, in the middle of a song, and refused to do anything no matter what button I pushed. I let it rest for a while and then reset it, and it behaved perfectly fine. I decided I would restore it anyways to make sure any serious problems got corrected.
When I plugged it into the USB 2.0 port on the back of my computer, the iPod updater opened and told me that my iPod wasn't formatted for windows and needed to be restored, properly formatted, and updated. I clicked the restore button like it told me to do, but then the program froze. I tried opening iTunes, and it refused to open. When I tried to open My Computer to see if it recognized my iPod, even that wouldn't open. No program I tried to run would open. I restarted my computer 3 times, but it refused to start up completely until I disconnected my iPod. I tried plugging my iPod into my computer again, and it froze all programs. As soon as I disconnected it, all programs opened and ran normally again.
Basically, I can't restore my iPod or add new songs because it makes my computer freeze up completely. It still plays songs normally, though.
Any idea what might be wrong or what I can do? I don't get any error messages.

    UPDATE:
Allrighty. I took my iPod to the Apple store in my area, and they managed to restore it and install the updated software and make sure it really is windows formatted. I figured that would solve the problem.
I broguth it home and connected it to my computer to start putting music back on it, and it still froze up my entire computer.

  • Freezes when Ipod is connected???

I purchased a 60gb Ipod last night because my old Mp3 player kicked the bucket. Well, I installed Itunes and everything went fairly smoothly. Itunes runs whenever I open it and it finds all my files just fine but whenever I connect my ipod to the computer everything freezes up, I tunes doesn't respond and every other program runs very slowly or not at all. I've tried basicaly everything I can think of to conquer this issue and I haven't had any luck. I even went to the lengths of defragmenting my hard drives and running a comprehensive virus search... to no avail. Am I the only one to have had this problem? I run Itunes on WinXP on a Compaq Presario 6000. This also happened last summer sometime when I was going to put some music on a friend's Ipod, it would just freeze it.
I have about 50GB of music that I'm ready to upload but this is completely hindering me from doing so. I've started to make back-up discs of my music so I could do it on another computer but I'd really like to know how to fix this problem and be able to use my Ipod in my own house.
So if anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it. I'd love to start using my Ipod =)
    Thanks!

I've seen this same issue with my 60gb since I upgraded from a previous 40GB (the 40GB would update quickly via firewire, never had an issue with it locking up itunes or winxp)
Since geting the 60GB, most if not all updates to the ipod are painfully slow and the computer is mostly useless. At best, it takes 20-45 minutes for itunes to update my pod... At worst, it seems to go completely out to lunch.
    I have ~8000 songs, 62 vids (1.46GB), 67 podcasts (1.67GB), no files, a few dozen photos.
My drives are defraged regularly, I run current AV sw, I have 2 firewalls, I run spysweeper (& others) on a fairly regular basis, I've tried the onboard usb ports, a generic usb 2 card, a belkin usb2 card... no real improvement.
Looking forward to someone figuring this out, as it's rather irritating...
<< for the following: standard disclaimers apply, I take no responsibility if this has negative impact with your particular system :) >> (though I highly doubt it could)
Something that may help you (it's worked for me on those occasions when itunes seems to be out to lunch... Click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the tray, click on the usb device in the list that represents your ipod (when you click stop with the item selected, it presents you with the actual device that is connected (e.g. Apple/Ipod) Selet the ipod and click "Stop". Windows won't actually stop the device, it will inform you that it's in use. After I do this, itunes generally sems to wake up and start updating the pod again.

Just as the topic says. Hello! I would appreciate any help that is available. I have a 60gb photo iPod. I have used 3 different computers (all pcs running Windows XP) to update my iPod. When I select shuffle songs it will auto skip certain tracks; it will play a full song but when it goes to the next track it "skips several" it also does this if I go to play an album. I can skip a song manually if I do not want to listen to it just fine. I do not see how the tracks could be corrupted if it is playing songs from the same cd all the way through.
    Thanks,
