Windows from iDisk

Hello
When I open windows from my iDisk, most often it behaves well but, from time to time, The "minimize" button is disabled so I can't send the windows to the Dock.
When I get this behavior it strikes every iDisk's windows.
Is one of you able to explain this behavior and how may I get rid of it?
Thanks in advance.

I ran Hardware test and after more than two hours it states that all is OK.
If I open the windows at boot_time, their properties are OK.
They may be odd when I open them after a period of use of the machine.
Maybe an application is writing out of its dedicated area.
I installed a script opening the needed windows at boot time.
So they will be OK.
It's just a workaround but, as I have no other track, I will live with it.

  • Using MAC iTunes Music backup from iDisk on a Windows PC

My home computer is a Mac which is what I use to purchase all of my music through iTunes. I backup my music on iDisk. My work computer is a Windows PC. Can I use my music backup from iDisk on my Windows PC? It appears that the backup is a .dmg file, but I cannot open that file in Windows after I map my Windows PC to my iDisk. Any suggestions?

    Hi dillydonut,
If you still have access to the original PC, you can move the entire library by following these instructions:

  • How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1

How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1 ?
My Superdrive is far from super anymore, So I managed to make an extern drive with both Snow Leopard Partition, Lion Partition (Since I thought Boot Camp 4,1 would bypass my problem), and Time Machine partition, Since I got 1. USB drive that works.
    - My general issue is that Boot camp Refuse to see the USB drive - (Many "how to"´s though show how they install windows perfectly through the USB port, but they use airbooks!, and somehow the Macbook will not ?)
I fix that issue with >> rEFIt <<, that suddenly makes it possible for the Mac to see the USB drive, and partitions.
Which was very strange since I could use an extern HD with the whole installation to start up wipe the whole disk, and then use my extern drive with partitions to install Snow Leopard and get everything as before with timemachine. Very smart with timemachine, but very lucky that I have a extern drive that runs the whole system and that I made the partitionsdrive before. DVD-drives are the past!
Point: So the original system could see the Snow Leopard installation USB disk, but boot camp cannot find the USB drive ?????????
After rEFIt I booted and then I got this error:
    Starting bootmgr.efi
    Error: Unsupported while loading bootmgr.efi
I read it could be a problem with the Windows software, so I purchased an extern DVD drive, Used Disk Utility to make an image (.DMG), then used another program to convert the .dmg to .ISO.
Then downloaded a trialversion of vmWare fusion, and installed windows from the iso. Everything worked brilliant, except and that is why I want to use boot camp, Running windows in another program while running the mac system is a little hacky and slow.
Point: Nothing is wrong with the windows software, and windows runs fine.
I then downloaded the Windows DVD / USB Tool, reformatted a USB drive as Master Boot Partition, MS-Dos Fat partition, then after lots of struggling got Vmware, windows to recognise the USB drive. And installed the windows software on the USB drive, as all the walkthroughs recommend.
Then I tried for "fun"! to just install windows form the extern USB drive, and with rEFIt it will see the drive and start to do something, but then when it starts to boot, the screen just turns into black and nothing happens, and you can see the drive does NOTHING. (I think it is because I only have 1 USB drive and the Extern DVD drive does not get enough power, but again the mac refuse to see the USB drive unless it is a Snow Leopard installation USB-drive!
Well trying to install Windows Ultimate 64 Bit, which worked great in vmware, because that program installed from the .ISO file that I had on the desktop, but trying with Boot Camp did not get anywhere, what kind of **** program is this boot camp anyway!?, but then I try the new USB disk with windows made from windows, thorugh rEFIt, it sees the disk and then starts and then I get this ERROR:
    rEFIt - Booting Legacy OS
    Starting legacy loader
    Using load option ´USB´
Error: Not found returned from legacy loader
    Error: Not found from LocateDevicePath
    (x 9 times)
Error: Load Error while (re)opening our installation volume
The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple´s firmware for legacy OS booting
(Hey Apple please send out a updated firmware that fix this issue?!)
So how do I do it ? - or is the only option to fix the partition running the system from the extern disk. Format the whole drive in 2 from the "bottom" and install windows and then afterwards install Mac on the other partition ?  Or just run windows on the mac and forget about mac software ? What a stupid solution...

There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.
This is 5 page thread, so a little more 'meat' to it:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3410900?start=60&tstart=0
And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a  mac-model device ID string that specifies yes.  An unnecessary hurdle.

Is there a way to open a new window from the "Go" menu?
First, as others have already stated.....make sure the checkbox is deselected for "open folders in tabs instead of windows" in Finder Preferences.
If you're like me and don't like tabs very much, there is a way to make folders always open in windows with a simple click (I'm using Mavericks 10.9.5).  Go to a root folder (for example, the Documents Folder), open it, and select View > Hide Toolbar, then all folders within that root folder will open in a new window.
As an alternative method, any folder can be opened in a new window by holding down either Command Key while clicking the folder. But sooner or later you will forget to hold down that key, and then clicking on a folder will open in a tab (which will automatically resize the window and cause much aggravation).
The Hide Toolbar trick will also work with any folder present on the Desktop. It will make all folders inside that folder open in new windows.
To make the Applications Folder open in a new window when opening it from the menu bar at the top of the screen, you will have to open the main hard drive folder and use the Hide Toolbar trick. This will cause all folders inside it to open in new windows.
    Hope this helps.

  • Options in running Windows from an mSATA drive

I recently ordered an x220 and expect to receive it this week. I also ordered an mSATA drive that I would like to install. Once I have it installed, I am not sure the best method to install Windows to the new drive and would appreciate some feedback.
I don't really like the idea of cloning the HDD to the mSATA because of solid-state disk alignment issues and degredaded performance. Also, I believe Windows 7 will correctly configure itself to utilize a solid-state when it goes through the installation process, and simply cloning the HDD will not give Windows an opprotunity to perform the configurations.
I could install Windows from scratch.  I like that this option will ensure Windows will configure itself for solid-state drives. I am concerned, however, that I will not be able to reinstall all of the Lenovo drivers and applications as correctly as they should. I reviewed the User Guide for my x220 (available here) under the section of installing a new OS, and it points to registry patches to update Windows and mentions downloading various drivers from the Lenovo site. If Lenovo integrates into Windows to the degree that it requires manual registry edits, I'm not sure I want to attempt to manually place the Lenovo software on top of a plain Windows installation.
The third choice I see, although I'm not sure it will work, is burning the backup recovery media and using this to install the Lenovo configured OS onto the mSATA drive. I question if this will work because if the recovery process is only dumping flat files into the partition, it will not configure Windows properly to utilize a solid-state disk. If, however, the recovery process is a true Windows installation, it should determine that I am utilizing a solid-state and should adjust its configuration accordingly. Does anyone know how the recovery process works?
If you were in my shoes, how would you proceed with getting Windows onto the new mSATA drive? Looking forward to any replies, thanks.
    Jesse

I could do that, but I would suffer write performance loss due to the SSD partition being out of alignment. I found this helpful article that describes what alignment is, and why it is important.
I think you are probably running your SSD at less than full performance capacity. Since you cloned the original HDD to the SSD, you probably didn't even notice your SSD could be performing faster. You can check you alignment by following this.
Additionally, if you don't let WIndows detect that it is being installed on a solid state disk, it won't optimize itself for that disk. I am referring to things like disk defragmentation, indexing services, or prefetching. These tasks really only apply to traditional spinning disks, and should not be enabled on a solid state. There are other things that are enabled that could be turned off, such as hibernation. With solid states, it is just as fast or faster to completely shut down the computer rather than hibernate, so why waste the disk space?
What are other people doing when they install solid states in their lenovos?

  • Can I stop a Finder window from opening on a mounted volume?

I work in an elementary school. One of the startup items on our kindergarten computers is a shared network applications volume. I have set the Finder preferences to not show connected servers or the hard drive on the desktop. However, when the computer is turned on, even though that shared network applications volume doesn't appear on the desktop, a Finder window opens that shows the contents of that volume. Is there a way of preventing that Finder window from automatically opening? I could use Simple Finder, but there are things I don't like about Simple Finder based on what the kids need to do.
    Thanks!

I haven't tested this with AFP, but try launching "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering these commands:<pre>
defaults write com.apple.finder FXOpenWindowOnMount -bool false
osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to quit</pre>
Then relaunch the "Finder" by clicking on its "Dock" icon so the changes take effect.
This also assumes the volume is being mounted by the account in question - you mentioned that the window opens after turning the computer on and the shared volume is a startup item, which makes the trigger a bit ambiguous...

  • Safari 6.0, what happened with option to open with windows from last session?

Made the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and realized that I don't longer have the option to open Safari with windows from last session (Preferences->General). The option has been removed:

It would seem if your choose "Show my windows and tabs from last time" '''''and''''',
*when you last closed Firefox, you had no web site open (just a blank tab), that it would open just that blank tab
*when you last closed Firefox, you had one or more tabs/web site open, that would allow you to "Restore Previous Session"

  • Location of File Containing Data for "reopen all windows from last session"

I'm a heavy-duty Safari user and usually keep 100+ tabs and windows open, carefully invoking the command "reopen all windows from last session" each time I restart. Unfortunately, I screwed up today and started and quit Safari without invoking "reopen all windows from last session," and all of my open tabs and windows are gone.
I can recover the tabs manually using my history listings, but there must be an easier way: the information about the last session has to be stored somewhere. I did a Deja Vu backup on Friday and today I copied the files /~user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist and all the files from /~user/Library/Safari, including HistoryIndex.sk, History.plist, and LastSession.plist, from my backup to my hard drive, but the result was unchanged (that is, my 100+ tabs and windows were nowhere to be found).
Given the time it takes for Safari to shut down, I assume it's storing a large history file somewhere, if only I knew where. Does anybody out there know or could otherwise help my recover from my stupidity?
    Thanks in advance.

(proud Mac user for 23 years)

I found a work-around. Since I frequently quit Safari and "reopen all windows from last session" upon restart, my history reflects all of the open tabs and windows contiguously. I thus reloaded the history file, invoked the command "History --> Show All History," found the most recent such contiguous history listing, shift-clicked and selected all relevant listings, and then double-clicked. All of my formerly open tabs and windows were reopened in tabs within a single window. I had to go back and rearrange things but it was far simpler than manually reopening all of those tabs and windows.

  • Flash Player Update disables "restore all windows from last session" in Safari on Mac

I am on Mac OS 10.9.5, using safari 7.1.2.  Adobe Flash Player Update loses all safari windows when after update the installer automatically opens safari and just opens flash player website; the "restore all windows from last session" is grayed out in history. The "reopen last closed window" is also grayed out. It has been happening ever since and happened again when I just installed Flash Player ver 16.0.0.257.
For all other normal working situation I can close safari and reopen and see that I can "restore all windows from last session" and there is no problem.  But on flash Player install (set on manual install), the problem is annoying and costs me a lot of time to restore one by one from history.  I do not think this is a Mac or a Safari issue, but will update to Mac Yosemite help if Adobe Flash Player is updated differently in that setup?
    Please help.

Update: I called adobe flash player technical support phone number 1 877-587-1877.  They want $59 (warranty only 6 months) to fix this problem as they use a third party to solve this issue; they themselves provide no support.  Or buy the paid version.  They insist it is my network issue which I absolutely can not believe.
It is adobe Flash player update that forces reopening of safari and wracks the safari losing all windows from last session. That is not my network.  Adobe does not have a proper safari compatible flash player update.
Besides, this is a known problem at Adobe and they are not fixing it and want money to fix it one person at a time!  They also shared that 25% to 30% of the installations have this problem... wow!! and they still will not fix it in a general update!  I wonder if safari has a plug in update that can fix this?

  • How to delete "Reopen All Windows From Last Session" in History?

I use 5.0.4 in 'Private Browsing', but the above mentioned pull down choice in 'History' still remains active, and leaves my history visible for prying eyes.
Where is the cache for "Reopen All Windows From Last Session" located? I could not find it in Safari Library. Or is there another way to manually or automatically delete the contents of this file?
    Thanks,
    PP

    Hi,
Go to ~/Library/Safari. (Tilde) character represents the Home folder)
Move the LastSession.plist file to the Trash.
Check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, relaunch Safari. Try Private Browsing. You may have an Extension that's causing the problem.
I don't know of any way to "auto" delete the .plist file but someone else might know of a Terminal command.
