Windows hidden files on a Mac

Hi.. i have a question on windows hidden files on a mac.. I know i can see them temporarily through finder using "file visibilty", but does anyone have any idea on how to change the files attributes to be permanently visible ? Pls help !

What is your reason to change these Hidden System files and folder to Non Hidden. IMHO it is a very foolish thing to do. Using ther T Command you were given displays all of them and if for some reason that command doesn't then use this one.

killall Finder to implement either)
So with them displayed changing the hidden attribute may only cause you troubles.

One of those multi-purpose gizmos is overkill for this simple task (unless you already have one – I personally don't use them). Save (to any location you like) Gnarlodious's script as an app, and then slide that app into the sidebar of any Finder window. From then on one click on that sidebar alias toggles 'see invisibles' on and off. My script is virtually the same:

Paste that block of green text (or Gnarlodious's) into Script Editor, hit your <enter> key and the text should now display in pretty colors with no error message. You can click on "Run" to test it. Save as an application with all the Options UNchecked.
If you know how to, give it a suitable icon – mine is a "switch".
Heed the warnings about interfering with 'invisible' items. Looking is fine, altering is only for those who know what they are doing – that's why they're invisible!

Is it safe to open a Windows Captivate file on a Mac?

We have Captivate installed on a PC and a Mac and I was wondering if it's safe to open a windows cptx file on a mac. I tried opening a project file created on a PC on the Mac and noticed that the font size changed (bigger) after publishing even if it looked fine when i opened it. Anyone else experienced this?

is my old Pro Keyboard from my bondi blue imac.
If I open it, will there be any crazy carcinogenic clouds of poison (exaggeration)?
Do you think its safe? I don't have the box, are there any warnings on it?
The original keyboard with the Bondi was the Apple USB Keboard.
A Pro Keyboard is the larger one, white. I've had one of these apart to repair it.
I like that keyboard and there's part of me that doesn't want to see one of those taken apart.
However I didn't see anything dangerous in there and I wouldn't expect there to be anything in the Bondi one.

WIndows Help files on a mac

Hi there,
I've recently switched from windows to mac. I've a number of reference books that I had got set up as windows help files - easy to search and all the rest of it. Is there any way that those can be made to run on a mac, other than using virtual PC?
Is there some sort of standard format to help files?

I don't know about the Windows application that is used to open your help files,
but first idea that comes to mind:
- Is it possible to convert them as .pdf files?
.pdf is the most common format that can be used on both platforms.
You'd have to do that on your Windows machine, using a file format converter (can be part of your OS, can be a freeware, part of the "Help program", or by other means that Windows users most probably know).
See also with Graphic Converter, if by chance the format can be converted from your Mac.

Convert Windows Excel File into a Mac Excel File

I have transferred my Workout Journal spread sheet over from my girlfriends PC (which I use often) . Problem is, I can't access it the file on my Mac in Excel or Numbers. It's currently in .xlsx format, I tried simply renaming as an .xls file but it wouldn't open properly on either application.
How do I convert this file Windows file into a Mac readable file. Thanks

You cannot read Excel ".xlsx" form files using older versions of Microsoft Excel than the 2011 version of Office for Mac or at all in Numbers. You will either have to Upgrade your version of Excel on your Mac to "Office for Mac 2011", OR go back to your girlfriend's computer and resave the file using "Save As ..." and there select the ".xls" compatibility format instead of the default ".xlsx" version that the newer versions of Excel use.

Locked files using a Windows 2003 File Server with Mac 10.6 clients running CS5

We migrated 40 Mac users from OS X 10.5/CS3 to OS X 10.6/CS5 back in November. Our InDesign files are kept on a Windows 2003 file server.
We have had fairly constant complaints of InDesign and Photoshop files being reported as locked when users try to save their work back to the server. This did not occur as frequently with CS3.
Has anyone else had this issue?

Will files with hidden file extensions in Mac OS X still open automatically in the correct application on a windows PC?

I recently submitted some job applications that had word and PDF attachments. However, when I saved the files I unwittingly had the 'hide extension' box selected. Will these files still open automatically in the correct application on a PC? (ie are the file extensions just 'hidden' at my end or are they completely removed by selecting this option so as to cause problems when opening them on a PC?)

Thanks, so having the 'hide extension' box checked when saving a new file for the first time won't save the file without an extension? (because I understand that Mac OS doesn't rely on the file extension but has other ways of knowing what the file is and what to open it with)
The reason I'm paranoid now is because one of the fields where I was uploading a file had a message to Mac users saying something like 'Mac users, be sure to save your file with an extension'. Surely this just happnes by default??

How can I remove old Windows /trash files from my Mac Trash?

I have a problem. I had some old Windows format drives that I recovered and reformated to use externally with my Mac. The thing is that i recovered from them the files i wanted and by mistake i threw some to the Mac trash. Some of theese files came from the old Windows /trash folders.
Now they're stuck in my Mac's trash and they won't go away. Furthermore, if I verify my Mac's main drive it gives me a file amount error. The amount is equal to the number of files stuck on my Mac's trash.
Is there any way to delete them?

Using Windows CS5 files on a Mac

This is a generic question. I have never used a Mac based system, most of my time has been spent on Windows and several Unix, main frames etc. I really have never used a Mac so I am ignorant of the real Mac basics.
I use CS5 Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, InDesign and Dreamweaver mostly. If I had a client who was running on a Mac who wanted me to supply files from any of the CS5 applications I use, can I just supply the psd, ai files from my Windows machines and they will be able to use them as is ? (I realise there are some font issues. Not sure exactly what, though).
I could not locate any Adobe document about moving between the two platforms, so I'm concluding the OS is actually irrelevant to the CS5 apps. But, somehow I have this niggling feeling that it will not be quite that simple.
Can anyone help ?

Simple network: Windows 7 file server & several Macs and Linux machines- SAMBA bombing out?

Hi guys, i know this is really more of a windows support question, but here goes:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit acting as a file server, turned off all the usual MS authentication stuff so Macs and Linux systems connect with password without issues..
except when i start copying certain files/file types/names to the system, it will break the network connection, then refuse any more connections, all macs and linux machines on the network are booted, from the PC however i can still access the Macs shares volumes.. (the macs still see the windows machine & pinging is still there, but if i try to connect i get 'check the name/ip address' error
im no expert, but its as if the Samba service on the windows machine gets killed and im not sure what to do to get it to re-connect other then restarting the system, but as the system is also a terminal server users always have apps/documents open and its 'never a good time' to do it..
if there was an alternate Samba to install, or a buffer patch, or even a 'goto this service, stop and restart' etc.
Trying to get help from the 'windows' community comes down to 'well your on a mac what do expect etc etc' *sigh*
any help is appreciated

Hi, just thought id update my finding regarding this, and it maybe directly affected by my only system, but in case anyone else has this issue?
I thought it may be due to the file name thats causing the lockups, but I found while trying to backup my collection of install images and updates that sure enough a simple named file 'osx10.6.3.DMG' going to the server, 850MB in it stalls and fails, now im not able to connect.
but form the PC, without changing the name or location etc, i copied the SAME from the Macs hard drive through to the windows system, all 5.7GB.
so it is something to do with my windows 7 system, but maybe more related to the size of the file then the name or non-standard characters as first thought.
as suggested by Grant above i will check on the server boards as well.

How do i create a bootable windows 8 file on my MAC, BUT FOR USE ON MY PC

I recently got a virus on my dell PC locking me out completely from accessing windows 8 login menu. (the only option i have is to boot from an ISO windows 8, using USB or DVD). Since i can't use my PC, i need to create this Bootable option on my MAC. I have come accross this video:

Why won't you just put your Windows install DVD into your PC and power it up? You should then get an option to reinstall or repair Windows. Or, search the Internet for how to use an anti virus program from a usb stick while booting.

"View Files" should filter mac hidden files on the mac

Specifically, it shouldn't show .DS_Store. Possibly it should filter all files that begin with "."?

Hello, Id like to know where can i find hidden files in my mac, id like to see if i can erse some of them, i also would like to know where is the php 4.4.1, that which comes with mac by default, cause i want to update it to the 5th version inthe command line. 10x a lot

php is included in OSX client. the binary for php is located in /usr/bin/php
you can find this by typing in a terminal
whereis php
/usr/lib/php holds what it says, lib files for php. this is where you might put pear plugins at.
as for upgrading php. Apple is currently supplying 4.4.1 in the latest software update. there are installers out there to ugprade to 5, although i can't gurantee this isn't going to break something else that might depend on 4.4.1, hopefuly the installer you choose DOES NOT remove 4.4.1. more than likely they can both be installed on your system and live happily side by side

To my knowledge, you cannot. As you apparently found out, Flip4Mac is now $5.95 (not exactly a big outlay). The company indicates that Microsoft has eliminated the free version. I "assume" the free version will still run.

Viewing Hidden Files?

I'm having problems with updating my iPod and have been told to tell my computer to "view hidden files." This advice is coming from a Windows user, and apparently it's much easier to do this on a Windows machine.
Even with a help search, I'm not turning up anything that tells me how to view hidden files on my mac. Does anyone know how? (I really just want to view hidden files on my iPod).

Please tell us what specific problem you're having with the iPod. Windows troubleshooting advice won't necessarily help you and I suspect that 'viewing hidden files' isn't what you should be doing as a first step.
The more specific you are the better a chance you have that someone may be able to recognize and give you a fix for your problem. Also, remember that there are topic-specific threads in the discussion for some kinds of problems - such as one for iPods.
Let us know what's happening - maybe we can help.
