Windows host cannot establish Ethernet link to Arch Router

This is a weird problem.
I have a Windows host about 20 meters away from my Arch Router, the Ethernet cable goes into the wall, with wall sockets, so it's a total of 3 cables (1 in wall, 1 @ router, 1 @ host). I've tested the Ethernet cables with a LAN tester, they are all fine. When I connect the host to a Linksys router using the same cables, an IP address is obtained and the link is up and running.
But when I connect the host to my Arch Router (an Arch computer with some network cards), no ethernet link at all is detected. No lights on the ethernet card of the host, and ethtool on the router reports the link being down. I have connected my laptop to this ethernet card of the router and it works just fine, I get an IP and I can surf the web etc.
I really have no clue why this other host cannot establish a link. Does anyone have a clue what the problem might be?

pyther is right. Check for Auto-MDIX support on your network cards.
What network cards are you using?
Rule of thumb:
Auto-MDIX is a requirement in the Gigabit Ethernet specification, so proper Gigabit capable cards will work 99% of the time whatever cable you use.
Fast Ethernet (100mbit) and below does not have Auto-MDIX in it's specification, so those 9 out of 10 of those cards will not perform it! When connecting these directly to another network card, use a cross-cable.
Also make sure the network cards are in working order. I assume the ArchRouter PC's network runs fine when you connect that to your Linksys router?

  • Cannot Establish Gigabit Link Between Catalyst Switches and GSR Router

The GSR Gigabit interface is configured for no negotiation auto and the line protocol goes up when connected to the Catalyst switch.
The Catalyst switch port remains unconnected even when it is physically attached to the GSR router.

The flow control settings must match on both sides for the link to come up. It is highly recommended that you configure auto-negotiation to on for both devices. (Auto-negotiation is enabled by default on all Catalyst switches.) Otherwise, if you have a layer 1 problem, the link remains up and a unidirectional link will result.
The initial software releases that support Gigabit Ethernet on the GSR router do not support gigabit auto-negotiation.
The following command configures gigabit auto-negotiation on the Catalyst 6000/6500:
    set port negotiation module/port disable|enable

  • Cannot establish a link between MacPro and Windows 2003 Server

I just had an issue where we had a server crash. This server supports several PCs, as well as two Macs. The server has been brought back online and can communicate with all of the PCs. However, neither one of the Macs can now communicate with the server.
When I try to connect through the sidebar in the finder window, it will bring up the authentication window. But after I type in my password and hit enter, it gives me the message, "The alias "" could not be opened because the original item could not be found."
When I try to connect through Go>Connect to Server, it gives me the message, "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "" could not be read or written (Error code -36).
My IT guy says that everything is alright with the server and that the problem has to be in the Mac settings. He does not know anything about Macs, however.
Can somebody help me out with this issue?

The only thing that comes to mind is a few settings in the Security Options of the Local Policy. Here's a link:

  • Cannot connect IBM Thinkpad to Linksys Router Wirelessly

I recently moved in with a friend, and my IBM Thinkpad T42, with Windows XP, cannot connect to her Linksys WRT120N router wirelessly. I am able to connect to the internet using an Ethernet cable, and I am able to connect to other public wireless networks.
I have been told by Cisco helpdesk people that it is because Windows XP does not support WPA2 security, and/or that because they don't know much about IBM computers, I should get rid of the third party internet connection software, IBM Access Connections, that came with my computer.
I have been having this problem for a week, and I did not even know I had IBM Access Connections until today, so I don't think that's the problem. Also, my friend has been using that application successfully on her computer, Thinkpad T61, Windows XP, to connect to this router, which she has been using for 2 years. So with two almost identical computers, does anybody know why my wireless connection isn't working?

Answer these questions, I may be able to give you the right solution to your issue:
    1. Go to your Network Connections folder on your wired computer and check which one is connected:
    a. Local Area Connection
    b. Broadband Connection
    c. 1394 Connection
    2. What is the IP address of your computer?
    3. Who is your internet service provider?
    4. What is the error message when you connect the wireless computer to the network?

When I send my ical link to my better half , who sadly, still uses a windows based system- He cannot open the link back to my calendar- any help?

I've been using iCloud since it's inception as "mac.com" or whatever it was called. I've been able to Sync Outlook Exchange Calenars to my iMac, iPhone and iPad. However, I cannot get iCal (when viewed in iCloud) to display Exchange or Google Calender items.
It's odd, all other Mac versions of iCal are happy e.g. iMac, MacBook Air, iPad Air, iPhone etc. But nothing when I login to icloud.com and look at the iCal there.

  • PC cannot see wireless Airport Express using Ethernet on D-LINK DIR-655 Router

This seems to be a recurring issue going way back, but I have yet to see a real solution posted.
I am using my Airport Express (APX) to stream music from the computers on my network to my stereo via Airplay.  I have APX set up to wirelessly join my existing wireless network, which uses a D-Link DIR-655 router hooked to a Time Warner cable modem.  I can succesfully connect all of my wireless devices via Airplay, through iTunes to my APX, including two laptops and an iPhone.  However, my primary desktop PC, which does not have a wireless card is linked directly via ethernet cable to my D-Link router, and it is not able to see my APX.  I can, however, see the Airport Express from my PC through my Airport Utility by directly typing in the IP address.  Note that the  APX set-up option to allow Ethernet clients is checked.  I also noticed that my laptops will stop detecting the APX if I directly connect them to my D-Link router via Ethernet and turn off their wireless cards.  They will resume detecting APX when I turn their wireless connections back on.  So, bottom line, I am convinced that this is not a firewall problem.  Although I have tried every conceivable setting of my D-Link router and APX, I am convinced it is either a wireless to ethernet communication issue, or some obscure setting on APX.. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Wayne

I think I found the fix based on reading some Apple TV forums where several people were having the same problem.  Under Advanced Network settings in the D-Link setup, I just checked "Enable Multicast Streams" and that seemed to do the trick.

    Thanks for responding Cold--
Hardware: Mac Pro  3.0 GHZ quad core xeon
I read the link but it still does not explain why the aggregated dual ethernet interface does not show up in the Network tab of the hardware section Lion Server. I was able to see it on the network and looks to be using a single static IP that I assigned. My concern was that is this supported and will it allow for failover and double performance of the single network interface.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
I don't want to sound sarcastic but why didn't you try moving to the NetworkManager utility, I remember well that (yeah it's a Shitian) back in Backtrack 5 and even the fourth connexions were managed by wicd and always caused troubles at some point. NetworkManager handles very well VPN connections without problems and still allows you to make advances configurations. Maybe you should consider trying it in your Virtual Box and post results. Sometimes thiking easy avoids headaches and lets you relax.
On the other hand, it is true that router's "PPTP & VPN passthrough" option can cause troubles when using VPNs, and catalin's solution might be the best, but unless you absolutely need to use wicd (I can't think of a reason right now), you should consider easing things up with NetworkManager. Again just my belief.
Are you trying to connect a VPN or create a VPN connection betweed two points ?
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot establish secure connection to itunes store

    Dear Apple:
If it ain't broke, don't fix it kthx? itunes 8 is unworkable.
Ok, since I upgraded to version 8, it won't allow me to buy songs. I click the buy now button and absolutely nothing happens. I checked my account, my credit card is authorised, all the info there is up to date. I checked my internet explorer settings, SSL 3.0 and all that jazz is enabled. I run a connectivity test and turns out I cannot establish a secure connection to the itunes store. The program does not deign to tell me why and after about half an hour of looking around to figure out why I give up.
Here is the log of the test and I am hoping someone will be able to help:

I tried your suggestions but no luck. I was looking through the tabs on IE and saw a Diagnose connection problems application. I ran it and it seems that I also have trouble connecting to other HTTPS servers (see below). Now this is odd since I do my banking from home, access hotmail, yahoo mail, gmail, netflix etc and I know all of them use HTTPS, so why would I be able to access some HTTPS servers and not others.

I tried this one in the advanced tab with no success (the basic settings also did not work). I have a blank OS X Installation.
    What is going wrong?

    ------------- update ------------------
trying to start sqldeveloper manually gives the following error:
Error: Java home /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.5.0/Home//bin/java is not a J2SE SDK.
Running Oracle SQL Developer 1.0 under a JRE is not supported.
If the Java VM specified by the SetJavaHome is actually a full J2SDK installation
then add 'SetSkipJ2SDKCheck true' to /Users/einstein/Desktop/SQLDeveloper.app/Contents/Resources/Java/sqldeveloper/jdev/bin/sqldeveloper.conf
I added this and SQL Developer starts (and looks the same like starting via the App Icon)
I used a small Java program to test the jdbc connectivity:
    java -classpath .:../SQLDeveloper.app/Contents/Resources/Java/sqldeveloper/jdbc/lib/ojdbc14.jar TestConnection jdbc:oracle:thin:@xxx.yyy.de:1525:SID
    this works !
But SQLDeveloper still cannot establish a connection ?

I got it: the database server was not excluded in the proxy settings of the system network preferences!
    Now it works ...

Are there any related error messages logged?
If not, I suggest you use Process Monitor to find out why exactly Windows cannot launch Adobe Reader.

I am getting an Internet Explorer Security error come up when I open explorer. A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer. "Windows host process (Rundll32)." Publisher is Microsoft Windows. can someone let me know what this means and why I cannot get rid of this message. It does not allow me to tick the box "do not show again" and it will only let me click on allow or not allow.

    Hi
As far as I know Rundll32.exe is a program created by Microsoft required to run Dynamic Link Library (DLL) files. But also spyware can use this to run virus programs under the same name.
I recommend scanning the system using a Antivirus software. If nothing would be detected then you can tick the box "do not show again
