Windows Installer Service Is Unavailable - Another Aplication May Be Running Setup
Hi,
I'm running Windows 7 Build 7100. I have installed Visual Studio 2010 beta1 and Silverlight 3 SDKs, so the installer was working. I tried to install SQL 2008 server which failed (unfortunately I thought it was because I downloaded Enterprise Edition from MSDN instead of Developer Edition so I did not copy down any error details). I'm not sure if the SQL failed install has anything to do with the issue but now i get Windows Installer errors whenever I try to install anything e.g. Blend 3, SQL, Office.
I have checked that the error is not due to the Registry settings (SQMClient / Disable Settings) and also turned off the Customer Experience Improvement Settings - I found that these were the most common issues for people but they have not solved the issue for me.
Is anyone else having installer issues with his build and could anyone point me in the direction of a potential solution? I'm starting to loose hair over this one!

I have the Beta of Visual Studio Ultimate 10 installed, and needed to uninstall it to install the newly released version. I had already checked the processes tab for any instances of MSI or similar, but had not looked under 'All Users'. Found
it, killed it, and the uninstall proceeded without further hic-up.

Wendy2014Yes let's see if there is any error occurs in installation log.
Meanwhile from the error message, the possible cause is that a part of the application is missing such as a registry key with app version. In this situation you can first test to reinstall/repair the application though it is still working fine - see if issue
persists after reinstall the app.
Meanwhile you could also contact Citrix about this issue. It may be a common issue and Citrix may provide a quick fix for it.

An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist."
I tried the following:
1. sfc /scannow (no problems found)
2. Run microsoft fixit. It told me that "the problem has been fixed" but it didn't
3. system restore
Could you please help me to avoid windows re-installation?

may I know your antivirus status or is there any other security software? I suggest do offline scan (make sure no virus) and continue TS without any internet connection
as maybe you already noticed this issue maybe caused by
- You install or remove a program that uses the Microsoft Installer Service before you try to install the program on your computer.
- The Windows Installer Service is not running.
- The Windows Installer registry settings are corrupted or configured incorrectly.
this is the last step before perform recovery OS, it wont affected the program, but you need to backup data, adjust setting and upgrade to SP1/SP2 again. Please check this 2 document below

If you have not been able to install iTunes because the Windows Installer service is not available, I would recommend the troubleshooting in the following troubleshooting to help.
Issues installing iTunes for Windows
These in particular:
Make sure you have an administrator account.
To install iTunes, you'll need to log in to your computer with an administrator password. If you're not sure if you have an administrator account, read Windows 7: How do I log on as an administrator? You could also refer to your computer's help system, contact your IT department, or visit support.microsoft.com for assistance.
Install the latest Microsoft Windows updates.
To download the latest updates, visit the Microsoft Windows Update website. iTunes for Windows requires Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 with the latest Service Pack installed. Disable conflicting software.

Restart your computer.
Install iTunes.

According to your description, could you please post the summary and detail logs for further analysis? By default, the logs can be found in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
Usually, the error occurs when the Windows Installer Service is not running or the Windows Installer registry settings are corrupted. I recommend you reset the Windows Installer Service settings in the registry and restart the Windows Installer Service,
then reinstall SQL Server 2008 R2. For more details, please review this similar

I can't Start, Uninstall of Install new iTunes. I'm getting the same error message: "Window Installer Service could not be accessed". No other programs having similar problem. Any suggestions how to fix it?

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) (not for XP) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I am trying to find a fix for this...just bought a new computer with windows 7, all updates have been performed. Doublechecking ... by any chance did you migrate a 32-bit version of the iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Support and Bonjour programs to the 64-bit machine from a 32-bit machine using the PC Mover utility?
(Your symptoms are consistent with that ... the installer service throws the message when trying to uninstall the 32-bit itunes and related 32-bit componentry prior to installing the new 64-bit versions.) -

This is the same type of message posted in various places with the following error: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windoews Installer is not correctly installer. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
I've attempted everything I could find in the windows forum. I'm open to new ideas ASAP as I can't sync my phone/calendar without it. Itunes doesn't function at all, uninstall failed as well. Thank you for the assistance!Gabe,
You see a lot of suggestions on the Windows/Apple forums by unregistering and reregistering the windows installer services ; msiexexec /unregister + msiexec /regserver. Or to create a new windows account/profile.
This didn't work for me, what was working is a uninstall of iTunes and the related Apple software, Apple application support, Apple mobile device support and Apple software support by using Windows programs and features.
I als cleaned up the personal and all users profile directories c:\users\<user>\app data\roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes.

Last week, I upgraded to the newest 64-bit version of iTunes, as well as Quicktime for windows. After the install, I get an error that says "Apple Application support is not found." I tried to uninstall iTunes, but I get an error message that says "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed." The same message also appears when I try to do a new install, instead of uninstalling first.
I contacted Microsoft (and HP) because it stated it was a Windows Installer error. However, they both redirected me to Apple because it was only affecting the iTunes software.

This is the solution that worked for me:
Go to this registry key:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer
Look for
WOW64 and it's value.
Is it 0x00000001 (1) ?
This value tells Windows Installer only to deal with 32-bit installers
and to return you an error whenever you try to install something that is
64-bit. To fix it, just set the value to 0. So you will see in your
editor:
WOW64 REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
After changing the value to zero, restart your Windows Installer Service
by using services.msc or reboot.
This simple solution of changing the 1 to a 0 allowed me to finally
install Itunes on Vista 64 -
