Windows Intune, Windows 8.1, SCCM 2012 R2
Hello,
I am planning to setup a new infrastructure to manage devices using Intune and SCCM 2012 R2 for one of my customer.
We plan to have one single site, where in the devices will be imaged with Windows 8.1 and then will be provided to users who roam around the world.
We like to manage these devices and do:
1. Inventory
2. Software Distribution
3. Software Updates
4. EndPoint Protection
5. Reporting
I have come to learn that:
1. Add and verify company domain at account.manage.microsoft.com
2. Add UPN in AD
3. Run DIR Sync for Users
4. Configure Intune Subscription
5. Install Connector
6. Whats the next step for configuring Windows 8.1?
My questions:
1. Is Cloud based Distribution Point required for hosting content. If not, how will the devices download the content and install the app?
2. Do we need PKI for Windows 8.1 devices(enrollment and management)?
3. Where should I install Company App Portal?
4. What are the different ways of enrolling Windows 8.1 device (Workplace & Store)?
5. Any other info if you can share, really appreciate
Please advice
Rajiv
Hello Nico,
Thanks for the guidance.
1. Distribution Point: manage.microsoft.com - whats the disk size/storage available by default. Is it unlimited. As the Intune license is user based. I can have 5 devices enrolled per user. I may have loads of packages/apps.
5. Your apps need to be signed with certificate that's is trusted by your device : I guess when we import
an Application in SCCM, it never checks if it has a signed certificate. One would need to ensure that the cert is present.
Can I install software updates to devices managed using SCCM Intune?
We are planning to have a single site with a remote DP for building devices with Windows 8.1. Once the device is ready, it will be given to the user. The user will enroll the device and is good to go. I am sure we will be able to embed Company Portal App
into the build image?
Thanks
Raijv

Automatic Install of Endpoint Protection fails on windows 8.1 clients with SCCM 2012 R2
Running SCCM 2012 R2 and deploying CM clients and Endpoint Protection via software updates. CM client and EP install fine on Windows 7 clients. CM client installs fine but endpoint protection fails on Windows 8.1 clients with the following from the

So on the win8.1 client I run the above command line manually in a command window and receive Access is denied. Then I run the same command in an elevated command window and EP installs fine. Does this have something to do with why the automatic

Deploy Windows 8 To Go through SCCM 2012 SP1
First a little backgroud:
I have SCCM 2012 SP1 with MDT 2012 Update 1 integrated. I am using an MDT UDI task sequence to deploy windows 8 and it works perfectly. My Windows 8 image is fairly thin (only containing OS updates and C++ runtimes), and I am using the MDT database
and an MDT task sequence in SCCM 2012 to dynamically set a list of SCCM Applications to install as well as settings based on location.
Now I want to get Windows To Go provisioning working in SCCM 2012 SP1. I had a powershell script that preparied the drive and applied a thick image (including office and other apps) to it then updated unattend.xml with a computer name and the domain join
info. That worked for me however I'd like to levarage the dynamic task sequence that I described above to build these To Go sticks the same as my other Windows 8 machines without having to keep updating the thick image evertime something changes.
There isn't much info out there that Iv'e found on setting up SCCM 2012 SP1 to provision windows to go here are the two that I have found
http://ixrv.blogspot.com/2012/10/provisioning-windows-8-to-go-with.html
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj651035.aspx
I followed the instructions in the first link and was able to run the Windows to Go Creator program and apply the prestaged wim to the USB stick. I rebooted from the USB stick Windows PE started and started to run my task sequence then it errored out on
the apply image step. At this point it occured to me that the MDT SCCM task sequence was probably not setup for prestaged media and or Windows To Go.
So my question is am I on the right track? Do I just need to examine each step in my task sequence and make sure that it will work properly with my Prestaged/Windows To Go stick? If so has anyone actually gotten this to work that could give me some advice?
Or is it asking too much to have a dynamic Windows To Go task sequence and I should just be building a thick image and using a second task sequence specifically for Windows to go?
are there any other resources for Windows To Go with SCCM that I'm missing?
Thanks,
TonyFirst of all sorry I missed your last three posts I have to check my email notifications. I'll try to answer all of them even though I think the last part is the only one where you are still stuck.
When I created my prestaged media I didn't put anything into it except for the the OS image and my PE image. On the Select Application and Select Package screen in the prestaged media wizard remove any application or packages that are added automatically.
The task sequence is supposed to be smart enough to know if the version of the package that is on the prestaged media is out of date and go to a DP to get it but that didnt work for me. The only way I was able to get it to work was to remove all the packages
from the prestaged media even the Customsettings package, the MDT toolkit package, USMT, etc..
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrosd/thread/d729d0ff-829f-4af8-91af-2131b3355fd0/
This thread which is about prestaged media in SCCM 2007 helped me to understand how prestaged media is supposed to work. Basically what I learned is that once the computer is rebooted from the ToGo stick into PE the task sequence will run the same as any
other task sequence installing any applications and setting up your ToGo stick just like any other computer that runs the task sequence they dont need to be in your prestaged media for this to happen.
You shouldn't need to worry about partitioning WTGCreator.exe will partition the ToGo stick for you I'm just using the standard MDT Integrated partitioning in my task sequence. The one thing that I did was set the Windows To Go Creator package to "run from
distribution point" which speed things up because then it didnt download the prestaged wim then apply it to the USB drive.
Is it booting into PE then rebooting? Did you check the "Allow unattend operating system deployment" check box when you made your prestaged media? If so it wants you to have set the task sequence to run in a task sequence variable SMSTSPreferredAdvertID
to the task sequence ID you want to run. I'd just remake the media and leave that box unchecked.
Good luck and let me know how it works for you. I'll check back sooner this time I promise. -
Windows 8 Tablet Manage with SCCM 2012

Maintenance Windows are not being honored - SCCM 2012 R2
I have a TS that runs a command to reboot our systems, and this TS is deployed to a test device collection with the following settings:
- Deployment settings: Install and required
- Deployment schedule: every 1 hour
- Rerun behavior: Always rerun program
The test device collection has the following maintenance windows set:
- Recurrence: Weekly
- Recur every: Saturday
- Start time: 2am
- End time: 3am
- Apply this schedule to: Task sequences
Despite the maintenance window, my test machine is getting rebooted every hour. Am I missing anything here?
Thanks.I did but there's not much there as to why the MW is being ignored

SCCM 2012, Intune and Windows OS Support
I am just trying to confirm what I believe I am reading about Microsoft OS Support for Windows Intune when integrated with SCCM 2012 R2...
What I believe to be the case:
Windows RT, Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1 all have the ability to enroll via OMA-DM, thus can be managed by SCCM.
Down-level OS's such as XP SP3, Vista, and Windows 7 require the Intune Client to be installed, thus can only be managed by a standalone Intune subscription?
Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks!More or less correct.
Generally, even for Win 8.1 and WinRT, IBCM or DirectAccess are a better choice than OMA-DM as it can only enable management of a limited subset of features. Two important ones cannot be: software updates and endpoint protection.
As you've seen (based on your other thread), you can still use the Intune subscription that is connected to your ConfigMgr site to manage devices with the Intune client installed. Effectively, there are two halves of the Intune subscription, the full client
management half and MDM half which can be controlled by Intune or ConfigMgr. Just because the MDM half is controlled by ConfigMgr does not technically preclude you from still utilizing the full client management half. That's not at all saying you should do
this though, but you certainly could.

Remote reset PIN on Mobile Devices - SCCM 2012 R2 w/ Intune
Hi Forum
I am wondering if this is possible. Can I reset a PIN on a phone (WP, Android, iOS, etc), mainly concerned with WP8 and WP8.1.
I know this is possible through Intune standalone. However, Windows Intune is connected to SCCM 2012 R2 as the authority. Can i reset the PIN remotely on these phones? Does this have anything to do with the Intune Extensions, if so which one?
Thanks in advance
NNQuick thanks first for all the replies.
WP does not support this feature neither with Intune Standalone nor with ConfigMgr.
Only iOS & Android support.
http://scug.be/blogs/nico Twitter: @nsienaert
Is this right, I thought an update got released for this in Intune Standalone?
http://blogs.technet.com/b/windowsintune/archive/2014/04/28/availability-of-update-to-windows-intune-for-windows-phone-8-1-and-samsung-knox-standard.aspx?loc=zYFCz&prod=zWIz&tech=zOttechz&prog=zOTprogz&type=zBLz&media=zOTmediaz&country=zUSz
First paragraph states:
"...and the ability to remotely lock or reset a device’s PIN."
Although looking in my console at laptops, EAS managed devices and Intune Managed devices the option does seem to be greyed out???
The process seems to be the same as I thought for ConfigMgr, so thanks for clarifying.
Thanks

Compatibility Windows 10 and SCCM 2012 R2
Hi,
Is SCCM 2012 R2 compatible with Windows 10?
Will we need to update MDT 2013 or if they will be a new version? What about USMT?
When may we expect to have a fully compatible solution for Windows 10?
Thanks,Hi,
It is explained it this blog post
http://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgrteam/archive/2014/09/30/windows-10-enterprise-management-with-sc-configmgr-and-intune.aspx
I haven't seen any offical statement of how long after Windows 10 is released in RTM that these products will be released as well, as we are getting closer more information will come I assume.
And USMT is included in ADK preview that is available here:http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45522
If windows 10 is compatable with SCCM 2012 R2, I would say yes it works is it supported no, as Windows 10 isn't released.

Hi,
We planning to go one level higher to automat and have more dynamic Software Update Management for Windows Servers. We have SCCM 2012 R2, SCOM 2012 R2 and SCO 2012 R2.
Our plan is to pur server in an AD-Group to get Update Schedule, from the servers will be importet to an Collection for Automatic Update and reboot. If I understand Everything right SCOM can't read AD-Group and put then in an Schedule maintenance mode. SCOM
can read reg value as exempel.
IS there any smar way to make the SCOM Maintenance Mode Schedule dynamic?
I found this
http://www.scom2k7.com/scom-2012-maintenance-mode-scheduler/?
/SaiTechYou could use Orchestrator to put the servers from a specific collection, or AD group, in maintenance mode in SCOM. For an example see:

SCCM 2012 deploy windows 7: how to manage network/server load?
Hi,
Hypotetically, if you would deploy Windows 7 to hundreds of pc’s at once, how could you manage that, regarding organizing the deploy, regarding network/server load? F.e. you deploy to a collection which has 500 pc’s, users can select when
to load the OS (Windows XP, we deploy the SCCM 2012 client, they can choose when to install)
*How can you be sure network is not overloaded?
*Can you limit in SCCM 2012 bandwith usage?
Please advise.
J.
Jan HoedtYou need to be as local as possible. You can host a deployment point role on a client OS such as windows 7 so you could temporarily setup one machine hosting OS images and then rebuild it last as well.
On a 100MB LAN with DP's hosted in a datacenter (not on subnet) we get to about 75 machines building at once before we see TFTP timeouts on PXE booting due to load on the local network. I would get your build as quick as possible and then do them in increasing
block sizes whilst monitoring the network and server load.
To speed up builds you could...
Build and capture to get a WIM file with most apps and updates in it.
Change the TFTPBlockSize registry settings on the DP's (If PXE booting) to as high as it will go
Host WIM files on your DP's with the Package share settings configured and enable the "Access content directly..." option in the Apply Operating System part of your task sequence.
Hope this helps.

Windows Intune with Windows 8.1 OS additional features
Hi,
I want info on following question
1. List of features if I am using windows intune + windows 8.1 desktop OS (if I use windows 8.1 OS windows intune will provide additional feature over windows 7 OS)
2. List of features if I am using windows intune + windows 7 desktop OS
Regards,
MaheshI know this is old but I’m trying to clean up old posts. Did you ever solve this? If so it would be good if you could post the solution to assist others. If not, at this stage,
as nobody has answered, I would recommend that you call Intune support.
You will find your local Intune support number here

Hi there
Trying to patch a new Windows 7 SP1 image within SCCM 2012 SP1, but it's failing.
I've searched for information on the failure messages I am seeing, but although there is a LOT of information online concerning Offline Servicing failures, I can't find anything on the errors I am seeing.
I've tried injecting a single update, five updates and ten updates, no difference, same messages.
We have McAfee Access Protection disabled, as we know Offline Servicing simply won't work if this is running.
In the console, in Schedule Update Status for the image I am trying to update, the following message is shown:
"Failed to find or access the update binaries to be applied on the image."
That sounds as if the process can't find the actual .cab file for any update I've tried to inject, but I don't know why it wouldn't be able to do that, we have Software Updates configured and the .cab files are on the same server.
When I looked at the OfflineServicingMgr.log file, I see the following entries:

I'm not sure what file "Failed to find properties of file 4" is referring to, whether dism.exe, an update or the image itself, but immediately after this message appears the image is unmounted. After that this message shows:
"Completed processing image package PackageID. Status = Failed"
As I say, there's a lot of information available re Offline Servicing but I haven't found anything with these particular messages.
If anyone has encountered this before, I'd appreciate any information you have.
Regards,
John.Hi,
I think file named 'NO_SMS_ON_DRIVE.SMS’ might be causing this issue. If this file is present in logical drives, then please give it a shot one more time after deleting this file from the logical drives.
Due to this file, it might be preventing 'smsexec' service to skip the drive when looking for content. So worth a try!
After deleting this file, you also need to restart 'smsexec' service to reflect the changes. You can also verify from below registry value & ensure that all of your logical drives (specially where SCCMContentLib directory resides) should be listed
over there
'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\DP\ContentLibUsableDrives'
Hope this will help!

SCCM 2012 - Task Seq - Install Lenovo AMT software - Failing with 2147500037 (80004005)
Hi there
Wondering is anyone has had any issues installing Intel Management Engine 10.0 software via a SCCM 2012 task sequence?
We have a number of older laptops which we build via a Windows 7 task sequence from SCCM 2012. As part of the install each laptop gets the appropriate version of the Intel ME software. All well and good.
We now have a new model to build (Lenovo T440) and for some reason the latest available version of Intel ME 10.0 software keeps failing in the task sequence with a 2147500037 (80004005) error.
This can mean different things but often means a permissions issue. Not sure what the permissions issue could be.
This software is installed at the same stage as previous versions of the same software are installed for older laptop models. Same install command too, SetupME.exe -s as per the document which comes with the software (in previous versions it is Setup.exe
not SetupME.exe but don't imagine the different file name is the problem).
I will try an older version but really we want to keep up with the latest available versions.
Anyone had problems installing this Intel ME v10.0 software via a SCCM 2012 task sequence?
Best regards
JohnDoes the install provide any logging? Does execmgr.log show any other info?
Per the readme, it should be setup.exe.

Lenonvo T440 with Intel SSD SC2BF240A4L - failing to install apps via SCCM 2012 task sequence
Hi there
Wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue with a T440 with Intel SSD hard disk.
Our firm purchased two Lenovo T440 laptops. One has a magnetic hard disk, the other a SSD hard disk. Here are the models:
SSD hard disk: Intel SSDSC2BF240A4L
Magnetic hard disk: 500Gb 7200rpm HTS725050A7E635
We deploy our Windows 7 build via a SCCM 2012 task sequence.
Building the T440 with the magnetic hard disk was trouble free. I built it repeatedly, and encountered no errors; our core applications installed successfully every time and the task sequence completed successfully every time.
All well and good.
Building the T440 with the Intel SSD hard disk has been frustrating. When I run the task sequence on this machine, 8 times out of 10 the task sequence will fail, either stopping abruplty at installing Oracle Single-Sign On or Appsense agents. When the task sequence fails it is ALWAYS at one of these two apps.
Frustratingly, sometimes the task sequence will complete successfully on this T440.
Given we successfully deploy this task sequence to a variety of different hardware from different vendors, including other Lenovo laptops, I can only guess the Intel SSD hard disk is the culprit.
Has anyone encountred anything like this? I've went through the smsts.log file and other SCCM log files and can find nothing obvious. That this ONLY happens on the T440 with the SSD suggests to me the issues lies in that direction.
I'll swap disks in either T440 to see if the other T440 fails also with the SSD aboard, to see what happens.
Meantime if anyone has any information about this issue I'd be grateful if you coud share.
Thanks

Coexistence of the SCCM 2012 R2 client and the App-V Full Infrastructure Model
Our environment currently has the App-V Full Infrastructure Model deployed with Windows 7 clients using hundreds of App-V apps. We plan to deploy SCCM 2012 R2 to the environment.
What is the affect on our Windows 7 users when the SCCM 2012 R2 client is deployed - will their existing App-V apps (utilizing the App-V Full Infrastructure Model) continue to function? Or will SCCM 'take over' all App-V functionality?
The only documentation I can find on this is one paragraph in the App-V and ConfigMgr 2012 White Paper (http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/5/A/15AD0DD6-40A8-49E3-86D6-C21E5D0BC7F8/App-V%20and%20ConfigMgr%202012%20White%20Paper.pdf) which
states:
Q: Is it possible to perform a phased migration from an App-V standalone or App-V Full Infrastructure
to Configuration Manager virtual application management?
A: Yes, migration to Configuration Manager virtual application management begins with deployment of
an App-V application from Configuration Manager 2012. Upon the first deployment in Configuration
Manager 2012, no new applications can be deployed via other methods, but all previously deployed
packages will be retained.
A blog post here (http://www.applepie.se/config-mgr-2012-and-app-v) seems to indicate this is expected behavior.
But then, this contradicts what Microsoft says on the TechNet website (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj822982.aspx):
Configuration Manager begins to manage virtual applications on a client after the first deployment of a virtual application. After this, all App-V applications on the computer must be managed by Configuration Manager.
Does anyone have any opinions or experience on this? Or further information?
My Microsoft Core Infrastructure & Systems Management blog -
blog.danovich.com.auAs soon as an App-V package is deployed to a user/device via SCCM then it takes over the management of the client on that device, therefore App-V packages coming from the App-V publishing server will no longer be deployed to that device.
I would assume that full cached apps would continue to be run on the local device but new content would no longer be deployed from it.

Best Compression Option For Text Only?
