Windows iTunes never finishes updating iPhone without bricking it...

So, I work at a mostly PC (Read: We only have two Macs - This kills me) job. The head of the company recently purchased an 8GB iPhone (2nd Gen), when the 3GS came out. Every time a new iPhone software revision comes out and he chooses 'update,' it grinds and whirrs until it gets to a point where on the screen it shows a progress bar and says 'installing software.' The iPhone shows a progress bar with the Apple Logo. They then sit there for, literally hours, as if displaying a screen shot.
The only solution, since I can't restore the iPhone on the PC (laptop running XP, btw) is to take it into the Mac room, have the latest iTunes install itself, restore the iPhone, THEN have it download the new iPhone software, RESTORE again and before it syncs, disconnect it and take it to the Boss' Laptop and have it restore from his backup. This works. But, it's an extremely shoddy way for someone to have to simply update their soft/hardware. This is also my first experience with syncing an iPhone via windows as I use nothing but Macs. The Manichean juxtaposition between the two processes is jarring.
Today, my IT (the only IT guy) guy tried to update HIS 16GB 3GS and EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM happened. And, he's currently reinstalling on the Mac so he can restore from backup on HIS laptop (XP). He says there's no ubiquitous software (other than Norton) on the machines and they both have admin rights... so, please help so we don't have to dance like this every time Apple releases a new update AND so we can maybe we can get new Macs in here (my logic is that if the iPhone keeps screwing up, they will then get a 'reverse-halo' effect - that would be terrible).

Upgrading the software has nothing to do with whether it's locked or not. Contact the cellular provider. They are the only ones who can help you with a locked phone issue.

  • Itunes requirement to update  Iphone apps

Unable to update apps on my iphone without agreeing to the new Itunes terms: 75 iphone pages!!
The "send by email" button offered does not work! Which means:

    2) you cancel and cannot update.
Quite frustrating. Am I the only one?

    Hello agullion,
Thank you for providing the details of when iTunes becomes unresponsive.  I found an article with steps you can take to isolate and troubleshoot an issue like this (click on the article for your version of Windows):

  • Itunes never finishes syncing w/ my Ipod

For the last few months, Itunes will never finish syncing with my Ipod (I think 5th generation). I have the latest updates from Apple, and have about 27 gb's of the 30gb filled up with mainly music. I add ratings to the songs, but other than that, and a few song additions, there isn't much else to sync. In fact, when I first start syncing with Itunes, the center display window (i.e. where track info is shown) will tell me what is being synced over. Eventually it just says, something like "syncing with Ipod -- Do not disconnect". I've tried waiting for two days, and it'll remain like that. I end up pushing the eject button to free it. The ipod takes 5-10 before it is finally released from Itunes. Any ideas on how to fix?

I get this problem as well from time to time. It always seems to work itself out by it self too. What I do when it's acting up is when it says it's done my iPod screen will go to the main menu for about a second then back the the syncing do not unplug so I just time it right when it's at the main menu and unplug it then. So far it hasn't damaged anything.

  • ITunes Account for new iPhone without a computer?

I just got an iPhone 3G that I am trying to update and get applications on, but I don't have a home computer. Is there a way I can login and create an iTunes Account virtually? I don't want to purchase iTunes, just connect, set up account for apps, and recieve updates. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

i saw your question wasn't answered yet (or maybe it is??)
anyway i think there are some ways to use the iphone without syncing it to a computer (par from firmware updates, i STILL havent been answered if i can just bring it to an apple store when the updates become available??)
as far as losing contacts and other information like that, its so easy to back that up via EMAIL or DROPBOX app, which is a free cloudbased storage method (up to 2 GB free with ability to gain more space)
Although i'm not the biggest Media-hog, so I dont really mind losing music/movies/photos etc, but the iTunes account is free and you can always download via your iPhone cool free apps like Pandora for internet radio!
Just sign up once for iTunes and try some of the methods listed above!

  • After iTunes 7.6 update, iPhone is not recognized by iTunes

I plugged in iPhone after iTunes update and a dialog box popped up that says "An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again."
Phone is 1.1.3 firmware (update earlier in week and all was working great).
I have wiped software, cleaned registry keys, and reinstalled iTunes on XP computer. I ran a restore process on the iPhone and bricked it. Installed iTunes on a backup Vista 64 Ultimate machine (iTunes works on this platform now, yay!) and restored the phone.
    Still hosed on XP, however.

This is happening to me too, but I have an iTouch though. I guess I will try to restore it on another computer if it worked for you.

  • Possible that itunes will not update iphone OS while overseas?

hi, im in australia, and i was thinking about getting the iphone 3gs through the local australian network carrier here, however, a friend of mine said that whenever he returns to his home country with the contract phone that he obtained under a plan with yes optus (australian network carrier) he told me that it is not possible to update the phone or download any apps through the local itunes store in his home country. to confirm this rumour, i head down to a 3 (another australian network carrier) retail store to enquire about the plan while at the same time asking about the rumour, a sales person said that it might be possible that itunes will not update an australian phone with an non australian IP address...is this true? because purchasing an iphone and not being able to update it while i too return to my home country would render the phone quite pointless. could someone please get back to me and confirm if this is true and if there is any possible solutions without hacking the phone? ohh and by the way, the network carriers do legally unlock the phones for their customer when anyone needs to go overseas

If your phone is locked to the Australian network, then you can only roam in Malaysia. If it's unlocked, you can get a SIM card from a Malaysian provider.
iTunes, however, is country specific. You cannot access Australian iTunes from another country. For example, I'm in the US, and I can't access iTunes from other countries.
If your phone is unlocked, and you have a local SIM card, you should be able to access your local version of iTunes. No problem.

  • Can't Update iTunes = Can't Update iPhone

In order to update my iPhone 3GS (currently version 3.1.2) to OS 4, it seems that I have to update iTunes to version 10. The caveat is that with OSX Tiger (10.4.11) I can't do that. Any ideas on updating my iPhone without having to buy Leopard? (Working student here, not like I've got a grand sitting around for a new computer when my current one works fine for school.)

I found a link for iTunes 9.1.1, which might help out!

  • HT1386 Why do the songs I buy through iTunes never finish processing?

This has been very frustrating. If I purchase a song through iTunes on my phone, it never finishes processing. I've tried changing settings, turning it off and on again, and yet I can still see the songs available when I log into iTunes under "music I've purchase but is not on this phone." Any ideas on how I can get the songs to finish processing and available to play?
If I buy a song through iTunes and try to play it in iTunes, it doesn't work. If I buy a song through Amazon, it works fine. I would buy everything through Amazon except it doesn't have all the same songs.
All I want to do is listen to one song that I've paid for and it seems to be nearly impossible. Why is this so difficult?

I'm having this exact problem now with an iPhone 4 (not the 4S) and running software 6.1.3 with iTunes version 11.0.4.4. - The songs play fine in iTunes. In some instances I brought in the songs from CDs, in other instances I purchased from the iTunes store meaning I can't simply convert them. In either way they play silence on my iPhone around halfway through and for the remainder of the track.
I have attempted a full restore from a backup, and then reloaded all of my music, same songs, same problem. I don't feel a manual restore would help because that means reprogramming every single app, and the music would be reloaded the same way so what difference could that make?
Just to add insult to injury my protection plan ran out about 2 weeks ago and my phone otherwise works fine, so this can't possibly be worth purchasing another pricey plan just to be allowed to TALK to Apple.

  • Update iPhone without wifi

My wifi had been greyed out for a while and I need to update my Phone. Is there any possible way I could update my iPhone without Wifi?

Yes, you can connect it to iTunes on the computer you sync with and update it that way.
If you are updating the iOS, be sure to back it up first.

  • My mac is telling me i have no software updates available, but i do! i don't have the most recent ios software and i cannot update itunes or sync my recently updated iphone without it. help!

i am currently on the osx 5.8 operating system. I just downloaded the new iphone 5 software and cannot sync it with my itunes on this computer because it doesn't have the most current version of itunes which i discovered i cannot download without an iosx oeprating system. I have run software update 10 times, started and restarted the computer and the program. help! what do i need to do to switch over to the ios-x operating system....or whatever the most current version is called. if i have to pay for it, that's fine. i have just been routed and rerouted through the apple store trying to figure it out. can someone help me please!

    Hello,
There are two different things here, an OS update and a software update.
Mac OS X 10.5 is the version of OS while the .8 at the end is the software update (release patches)
The most current software update for Mac OS X 10.5 is 10.5.8
No more software updates available. You would need to upgrade the OS, which would be to Mac OS X 10.6
Your new iPhone 5 would require iTunes 10.6 which is only available for OS X version 10.6.8 or later.
Your would therefore need to upgrade your Macbook to this version of OS.
It maybe brought on DVD via Apple directly (Contact Apple ) or using any good online vendor like Amazon.
    Best of luck

  • How to update iphone without deleting itunes library

My old computer crashed- I started using a new MBPro but never copied over itunes- now I have 2 separate itunes libraries & want 2 update my phone but it says it will delete everything on my iphone/comp if I want 2 continue with the update- is there an alternative??
I really dont want to have any of my old or new music/movies deleted.  Can anyone help- I am really not good with computers and feel like this should not be this difficult even for me- and yet it is!
    Please help! Thanks

Sorry to hear about your macbook.
Others have reported that if you have at least on contact and calendar entry on your new computer when you sync, then it will not erase you iphone, it will simply merge the two. While that makes perfect sense, I have not tried it myself.
As for the texts, I don;t think you can get those back.
Music can only be synced to one library at a time, so the music will be gone. However, in Itunes you can "transfer purchases," at least putting your itunes purchased music on your computer.
It is always a good idea to have a backup. I use an external hard drive. Then you will have a complete backup if anything happens to your computer.
Good luck. I hope it works out.
