Windows iTunes Server with Apple TV clients

Hello everyone.
I am hoping to set up a new digital media system in my house. I have the following plan, and would like to know how well this would work.
I want to install a "Server" box with windows server 2008, and put the latest version of iTunes on it, then authorise it with my apple store account and set iTunes to run on start up. Then, I want to get two apple TV's put one in my bedroom, and one in the lounge and hook them both up to the server.
Next, I will rip all of the DVD's I own with something like MacTheRipper, and then handbreak them down into the smaller file format. Hopefully then I will be able to watch all of my DVD movies in both the bedroom and the lounge disc free.
Also, using home sharing, will I be able to copy media from my, and my girlfriends mac books to the server, or will I need to be on the server, and copy from the mac books? (Could syncing help here).
Also, for occasions where I am not in the lounge, bedroom (for example when cooking) would I be able to point front row on my macbook to the iTunes server?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I would like to get going with this little pet project ASAP.

You could always just hard wire the mini since it doesn't matter where you put it.

Look for a program called BlueHarvest. I'm not sure if it still works with Mountain Lion.
I believe your file server can be set up to handle the metadata files, but I suppose that would depend on the Server software and your IT staff.

After installing Crystal Reports XI on Windows 2003 server with one error... REGSVR sapldap.dll error.  I had to regsvr it manually.  Crystal still didn't run.  Found out that Crystal Reports XI will not run until you change DEP to protect only windows program and services.  Thanks.

Thank you for sharing your finding. Very much appreciated.
The DEP is a known issue and it is documented in [this|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes_boj/sdn_oss_boj_erq/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/scn_bosap/notes.do] note.
Crystal Reports XI was not compiled with the nx flag as it released before Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows 2003 Service Pack 1.
As for the sapldap.dll. I'm not sure where this is coming from. I do not see this dll on my install, however it does come with the SAP portal integration kit. So I'm not sure if that is flying around somewhere on that server(?)

  • ICloud mail server - Unable To Send With Apple Mail client

    OS X 10.10.2
    Mail v 8.2
    iCloud mail
I am still able to receive messages but suddenly unable to send. Messages stay stuck in Outbox.
Mail Connection Doctor reports no problems:
If I setup MS Outlook for Mac 2011 with this iCloud account, I am able to send and receive like a champ.
Once it starts working, is there a way to change the outgoing mail server to use SSL, i.e., turn SSL to "ON" ?

Yes, I did. It doesn't show up in the logs because, I'm unable to send a message - it goes to the outbox immediately. And this led me to the conclusion below.
And by the way, I did get in touch with Apple Support who went through a number of troubleshooting scripts (including trying to use GMail's mail servers) and ultimately had me reinstall OS X from scratch. None of this worked.
Now this problem of being unable to send mail via my iCloud account, from the Apple Mail client, started only around the end of Feb. What I finally figured was that iCloud mail was using random ports on my machine to invoke its SMTP port. Everytime I would disable the firewall on my router completely, iCloud mail was able to send just fine. Recall that incoming was (and still is) working fine. Anyway, I installed wireshark to ID the ports that were being used when the firewall was down. I set up triggers on my router to open these up, turned on the firewall, but it just isn't working. I will have to play around with wireshark and see if I can figure out what ports need to be opened. Unless you or someone else knows. If I figure it out, I will post it here. Mind you, that I need to figure out not only the source ports that need to access port 587 but also what the real target port is (because I don't think it is just 587 as Apple claims).
By the by, when I asked the Apple Technician (some guy who I was transferred to after 3 other people - the one who asked me to reinstall Yosemite) if there was a way to change the outgoing mail server to use SSL, i.e., turn SSL to "ON", he said no there wasn't and why would one need to secure the traffic to Apple's SMTP server anyway? Seriously?

If you plan to set up a Mini as media server ...
Why not directly using the Mini as media center?
Then you wont need no Apple TV ...
Then your Mini IS the Apple TV, iTunes sever and so on, especially if e.g. a Elgato or WDTV stick or box is added.

  • Can you stream media from NAS with iTunes Server to Apple TV?

Hello to all of my trusty Appleoids!
Now, I'm stuck in a bit of a dilemma.... And I'm hoping you can help....
My Apple addiction started in Jan 10 when I purchased an iPod Touch - As you can appreciate, I was totally blown away.... From that point on, my Samsung Tocco Lite seemed like a daily insult to technology. Not just technology, but free-thinkining innovation! Four months later I became the proud owner of an iPhone 3GS, and the MacBook Pro accidentally let himself in whilst I was totally gazing in the opposite direction! . The fact I was then hunted down and tormented by the Airport Express, and headhunted by Mr Apple TV, means that I resemble someone from a chaotic 80's movie.... I'm running, constantly being chased, yet sympathise with my controller......
As a result, I might have accidentally purchased an iPad2 today...... Ooooops! Well, if it's true what they say about 'an apple a day', then my doctor has left the country, never to be seen again!!!
I have a large amount of media on my MacBook Pro, I use MobileMe/iCloud to sync the basics (apps etc). I desperately need to back-up my data, and intend to... Just as soon as I can decide on what media to use.
Now, my Apple affinity says Time Capsule, however the user ratings are an epic fail... Secondly, I'd like to access the files (film/music/photos) via Apple TV. Preferably I'd like to not have to wake up the MacBook each time.
In the future (without travelling at 88 miles per hour, and relying on a clock strike), I'd like to get a Sonos system throughout my house......
    Now here's my question.....
What's compatible with Apple TV 2/iPhone/iPad2/MacBook/Airport Express/iTouch Remote?
Can anyone provide advice on how I can get it all singing to the same tune? If you could email me a wiring (including wireless) diagram with how it works, I'd be eternally greatful!
Now remember, an Apple a-day keeps Dr Gates away!
    Many thanks in advance,
    Kat

In regards to using Sonos in your home with Apple Tv... http://www.sonos.com/airplay/
The sound output settings need to be set to your Sonos.
Well Airplay and Home Sharing are different completely... I have Airplay but dont use Home Share.
If Airplay fails or doesnt show the Apple Tv its usually the network your on but it can be due to your iPhone or Apple Tv not being up to date. double check the updates then check to see the network is WPA 2 and restart all devices after updating.
For homesharing; iTunes must be allowed to contact Apple using the
following ports and servers: port 80 & 443
Some trouble shooting links that may help are

If your AirPort Express does not appear in the AirPlay menu, see the Troubleshooting AirPlay section of the following Apple document, Using AirPlay.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4325.
      1. Using a SONOS CONTROL, select the ZonePlayer Settings menu from the Settings menu (iPhone, iPad, or Android, SONOS CONTROL) or Zones menu (PC or Mac).
         2. Select the name of the Sonos component the AirPort is connected with and update the following Line-in settings:
              * Line-in Source Name: AirPlay Device.
              * Autoplay Zone: Select a Zone from the list to play audio from the AirPlay device. Select Include Grouped Zones and any Zones grouped with the Autoplay Zone will play the same music.
              * Autoplay Volume: Use the slider to set a default volume for the Autoplay zone whenever the AirPlay device is connected. Check the Use AutoPlay Volume checkbox if you intend to use your AirPlay device to adjust the volume in the Autoplay Zone.
         3. AirPlay is now ready for use with Sonos. Tap the AirPlay icon on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or in iTunes and select Sonos. The AirPlay audio will play in the AutoPlay Zone.

  • Windows Home Server and Apple TV 2

There are some old threads talking about Windows Home Server and the original Apple TV - the HP Windows Home Servers actually have excellent Mac support and out of the box with the Twonky Media Server that is bundled with the HP WIndows Home Servers would stream to the original Apple TV with no issue.
The wrinkle is the Apple TV 2 requires Home Sharing. I'm not going to debate good/bad - it is what it is. I was searching for a way to get my WHS working with my Apple TV 2 since I'm finally getting around to automating the transcoding of my Tivo files and I would much rather my WHS be my media server than my Mac. I came across this article that seems perfectly reasonable:
    http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php/topic/16359-whs-and-apple-tv-v2/
I haven't tried it yet, but it seems perfectly reasonable. Has anyone else tried it? I'll report back either way - if I remember to

"But can it be both simultaneously?
Both a server and a media machine that is showing a movie on your TV?"
    Yes it can, no problems.
The Mini Server OSX is pretty much the same as the client Snow Leopard, complete with Front Row, iTunes, Mail, Safari etc, but no iLife09 supplied - you will have to pay extra for that.
It will do everything that Snow Leopard will do but has all the server capabilities too if you know how to set it up/use the software.
The only things I had trouble with was I can't find Migration Assistant and a strange quirk is that it won't share a USB connected printer across a network! No sign of printer sharing in System prefs but I guess you can do it via the Server config somewhere...
I just used CUPS to enable Bonjour printer sharing - works fine
I have been able to insatll everything I had on my previous CoreDuo Mini including Final Cut Express, iLife09, EyeTV, some bit torrent stuff - all works fine...
I really like the fact that I can plug two monitors in - I have the MiniDVI connected to a 50" plasma and 1080p Projector (using an HDMI splitter), the Mini Display port feeds a separate 20" widescreen monitor - when the plasma/PJ is switched off the main display automatically switches back to the 20" monitor
All in all this MiniServer is a great little HTPC - powerful and silent with 1TB of storage. The Server software is a bonus I haven't even looked at as yet

  • Running LabVIEW 7.1 on Windows 2003 Server with Terminal Services

We are setting up a newtork based solution with LabView. I have looked for documentation on installing LV 7.1 on a Windows 2003 server to run the applications and then have destkops connect to it. Can this be done with a Terminal Services Access solution? Another words, if we were to purchase the LV Volume License Manager, can you install LV 7.1 onto a Windows 2003 server and run the application through TS across a 1GB backbone from the desktop, which makes the server do all the processing?

Sorry for the delay. I'm surprised Philip didn't get back to us... Phil
are you there? Based on his comments, I think he misunderstands your
    situation (no offense Phil).
You and I are both talking about the same thing. You basically want a
terminal server license. NI will not provide it. They told me (over the
phone) to get a multi-seat license (MSL). IMO, that's unacceptable. I
expect a LV license taylored specifically for thin client networks. A
multi-seat license is for -->installing<-- on multiple machines. It
conforms to a totally different set of rules. One big one, an MSL assumes
that you intend to run LV locally to interact with DAQ hardware. Since
this won't be done with the thin client, you shouldn't have to pay for it.

Since you are talking about a Microsoft operating system, I would say this
cannot be done without some additional/costly junk installed.
Here's another option. If the people you're supporting don't have any
platform dependent things like ActiveX in their LV applications, you
should consider using a Linux-based terminal server. I know for a fact it
    works.
I've assisted in setting up a network like this before:
    * One Linux terminal server with LabVIEW for Linux (Full Dev)
    * One WinXP box on the network with LabVIEW for Win (Prof Dev)
    * 5 cheap thin clients
They developed LabVIEW source code on the thin clients and then compiled
packages on the WinXP box for distribution to their customers. The WinXP
was only used for compiles so they just hopped on when necessary. The
eventual plan is for the thin clients to simply open a RemoteDesktop
(using RDP) terminal session and do the compiles from there. I'm not sure
how to do that yet... on the Windows side.

Phil must have thought you needed a LV application to access the front
panel controls of another LV application running on a remote machine. The
VI server is handy in that area but useless in your case.
Hey, you wanna hear about cheap network infrastructure? We bought our
thin client boxes for $15 each! Go to ltsp.org if you want more info on
configuring Linux as a terminal server.

  • Question about Windows MultiPoint Server with VNC

    Hello,
I work in a research lab and our scientists run a lot of image processing simulations with MATLAB.  We were wondering about purchasing a single powerful workstation computer and setting it up such that up to 3 to 4 users could access the computer
remotely at any time and run simulations using the shared resources, but without interfering with each others'  sessions.  I just wanted to make sure that this was feasible and clarify how to go about setting it up.  I'm guessing I would install
Windows MultiPoint Server on the computer, create 3 to 4 log on instances or users with unique IPs, install MATLAB and a VNC client for each instance, and then users would be able to log onto each instance as if they were independent computers? Finally, is
there any way for Windows to automatically allocate remote users to unused instances--for example, if I try to connect to an instance, Windows will automatically assign me to the next free instance?
    Thanks!

  • How can i use my synology iTunes Server with the iTunes from my iPad?

Have anybody the Same Constalation @ home? I like to have Access to my synology iTunes Server from my iPad via iTunes without a thirdparty App, to have Access to the Central Data like Music, etc.? Have some One expirence with the configuration and implementation?

It will almost certainly not be possible. If you don't sign up for AT&T service for the iPad, then replace your Sprint card with a MiFi or Overdrive device from Sprint. This will use your Sprint service, but connect to your iPad using Wi-Fi. It also has the advantage of you being able to use it with any Wi-Fi capable device. IOW, you can use both your laptop and iPad at the same time with the MiFi or Overdrive, but only have to pay for one Sprint account. Of course, all devices that connect to the MiFi or Overdrive will use up your 5GB allotment, unless you use Overdrive in a 4G area. (Overdrive is unlimited on 4G, but has a 5GB cap in 3G areas.)
