Windows iTunes won't talk to iPod? Solved (for me, anyway).

Okay so, my 60gb iPod Photo died within warranty and Apple replaced it (a surprisingly smooth process). The replacement would not talk to iTunes for Windows. Windows would recognize it as an iPod and give it a drive letter, but it could not actually open it. iTunes would tell me it needed to be reformatted. I did so with the latest Updater, and the same thing would happen.
Each step in the above would also take a very long time, like ten minutes for the Updater to see the iPod.
I took it to an Apple retailer, where they formatted it for Mac and it fired right up, synchronized just fine. So it wasn't hardware.
Scoured the kb and discussions, found many solutions, none helped.
Thinking file systems, I put it on a Mac (where everything worked perfectly again) and enabled disk use so I could run the Mac's Disk Utility. It reported nothing amiss. I opened iTunes (still on the Mac) to turn off disk use, but the Mac now could not read the iPod and told me I needed to reformat it.
I immediately unplugged it and took it to my PC. I ran the Updater there (it saw the iPod in just a few seconds) and reformatted for Windows.
Voila. Everything worked perfectly. The long nightmare has ended.

Thank you, Michael for your sharing, yeah, I discovered this too
"Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

  • I deleted some Apple software, now iTunes won't recognize my iPod

So earlier today I removed Bonjour, and the Apple Mobile Device from my computer. Now all of a sudden iTunes won't recognize my iPod, but windows does. Could this issue be related to removing the software from my computer?

  • ITunes won't recosginse my iPod for a factory reset

My iPod has been booting up then shutting down constantly till the battery runs out since yesterday, so I followed all the knowledge base articles and finally came to this
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
which seems to be the only thing left to try before it goes back to Apple. However, it requires me to click on the "summary tab" to reset to factory settings but I can't do that because iTunes won't recognise my iPod, it just says:
"Itunes cannot read the contents of iPod "MONKEYSIPO". Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings".
Windows does recognise it, however. Someone has posted that doing a quick format will reset the iPod the same way but I'm not conviced by that and don't fancy invalidating my warranty, so can someone confirm that or help me with the iTunes problem?
    Frankensteined Athlon2.3   Windows XP Pro

Never mind. I had to uninstall the iPod using the installation CD then uninstall iTunes 7, reinstall iTunes 6.05, reinstall the iPod updater software so I could restore the factory settings. Uber faff and 6 odd hours of installing, forum searching and rebooting my PC
Note to apple: Total integration of features isn't necesarily a good thing. Get your support sorted.

  • Possible Fix For When Windows XP Won't Recognize Your iPod

The fix detailed in this article worked for me when I couldn't get iTunes 7 to recognize my iPod in Windows XP. Sometimes when I force quit the iPodService.exe service, it worked the first time, but when I reconnected the iPod, it didn't appear in iTunes.

    My issue was even more difficult;
I got a new 20 gb ipod photo, hooked it up to my computer, and ran updates. Afterward, it told me to unplug and reconnect my ipod. I did so, but it still just gave me the reeconnect logo on my ipod and did nothing else.
I tried changing the cable, nothing happened. I switched to my work laptop (windows XP pro, also), nothing happened. I tried my roommate's macbook, still nothing. I tried rebooting the ipod. It would still only show the reconnect icon.
No computer would recognize it and the ipod was also unrepsonsive, so I had no way to reset my ipod or anything.
I had realized that it never showed that it was actually hooked up to a power supply when it was plugged into anything, and I think this is because it was plugging into USB ports and not being recognized by me computer.
So, I took it out to my car, and plugged it into my cigarette lighter adapter.
Bingo, that did the trick, now it works with everything again.

    - Next see if placing the iPod in recovery mode will make it visible.  For recovery mode see:

  • ITunes won't recognize my iPod, however Windows does.

When I connect my iPod sometimes iTunes opens like it should, however it just opens and no iPod appears to be connected. If I go to My Computer, the iPod is listed there, and it is fine, however if I try to browse one of the folders on it, Notes for example, it comes up with this error message: "G:\Notes is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." My aim is to be able to get iTunes to recognize it so I can do a restore. Any ideas?
EDIT: I just tried plugging my iPod into my laptop which has iTunes on it, and it was still not recongnized by iTunes, however Windows did recognize it, and gave the same error message if I tried to browse any folders on it.
SECOND EDIT: I have tried re installing iTunes with no luck. I was wondering, I were to right click my iPod in My Computer and select the format option, and format it that way, would it ruin my iPod? or would it format it leaving it the way it should be similar to a restore?

I solved it myself, by running the windows disk checking utility on my iPod. This fixed the corrupted sectors of the drive, and it seems to be working fine now.
