Windows key rubbed off on my sticker!

HP pavilion DV4-1543sb
Win 7 64-bit
Hello!
I am hoping to do a fresh reinstall of my computer to hopeflly solve some issues I've been having with it. As I was reading the steps to do a fresh windows install, it said that I would need the activation key which is located on the sticker on the bottom of my laptop. Unfortuantely, the text on the paper sticker has rubbed off! Not expecting this to happen, I had never written it down.
I have taken a picture of the sticker, but don't want to post it on a public forum as it includes my product key as well.
Any tips on figuring out my key another way, or providing me with a replacement? Some of the numbers are still legible.
Thanks!

Hi There,
HP gives option for customers to create recovery media for OS re-installation, hope you have the disc created with you. if yes, Ideally disc does not prompt for any windows keys and installation should go smooth without any error.Alternatively, you can order a set of recovery media via phone/email support, using which makes notebook as good as factory installed OS setup.
Also, if you try to install OS using retail version of OS, key available in the bottom of notebook does not work as it’s a OEM key.
Hope it helps.
Thank you,
Waseem – HP 2LS

Does anyone know if I would be able to some how be able to retrieve the windows key on my laptop from Toshiba? It has worn away and I cant seem to get the right combination.
    Any advice recomended.
    CrazyRach

Maybe it sounds stupid now but this key is useless. This key belongs to original recovery image that you got with your notebook and cannot be used for Windows activation when you use original Microsoft installation disc.
Sorry but I think Toshiba cannot help you with this. When you use original recovery image for Windows installation it will be always activated and so long you use it there is no reason to have it.
If you want to use original Microsoft disc for Windows installation you must pay licence for this version.

Agreed. Cannot stop it by disabling the "Windows" key (from within Windows 7). Every time I Cmd-Tab to change apps, the Start Menu pops up,
and persists, overlaying other app windows. Much more than annoying.
Also, there is no Clipboard Sharing, apparently. Love typing in long binary strings into the Registry.

Some people have seen their aluminum uni-body discoloring due to body oils.  Go figure.
Normally putting anything over the keys/aluminum will hurt heat disspation, but you may need to use keyboard covers.
Or save up $500/year for new keyboards.
Neither is supposed to be a sarcastic answer.  Either one could end up being the solution.
    Good luck with it.

  • Re: I've lost windows key from Microsoft sticker

I have lost my windows key, which was written at the back of my laptop.
Actually it is not visible now as the maptop is more than a year old now.
Is there anyway I could refind it?

There are at least 3 posts on this forum including myself) about the successful re-installation of W7 using the laptops OEM key and a retail W7 DVD. This link [http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/windows-7-oem-key-with-a-non-oem-disc/7788dfa2-94a7-4db3-8bcd-b0e109bd7b95] is the first one I found from a semi official source where a moderator of a Microsoft owned forum Carey Frisch states:
"Yes, you can use a regular Windows 7 retail DVD and a genuine Windows 7 OEM product key to perform a "clean install"> However, when it comes time to perform product activation, you'll need to use the "activate by phone" method." and at that point the 42 character key the laptop generates and you have to key in will no doubt tell microsoft that this is an an install on a machine with OEM Windows 7 (version) installed at sale.
The above doesn't apply to XP . There are programs like keyfinder thing3.exe that will display the installed W7 key and mine does match the OEM key on the laptop

  • Microsoft Vista Home Premium Product Key worn off

The product key is worn off the sticker on the bottom of my Compaq Presario CQ60 215DX.  I just replaced my hard drive as it crashed.  My 3 Recovery Disks do not work (I created them as soon as I bought the laptop).  I need to know how to obtain the Vista Home Premium Product Key that I have already paid for as part of my purchase of the computer.  HP, based on my serial number, shouldn't you have this information and be able to provide it readily?

Truth be told, no one on the forums here will be able to tell you what your product key is.
If you were able to boot into the Windows that was installed on the old hard drive, there are some utilities out there to retrieve it. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case since the hard drive was replaced and I take it you could not longer boot into Windows on that old drive either.
The best option would be to contact HP support to see if they might have the recovery disks from the factory still available. I suggest this as the hard drive image on those disks will have the product key already activated and ready to go. Once that is backup and going from the recovery disks, then you can use a program to retrieve the product key.
As of this time, the recovery disks can be ordered here. However, I recommend calling HP since the recovery disks you made are not working as they may have some options not available on the site.
The factory recovery disks should get you going again with the original software with an activated Windows key.

I purchased a Macbook Air 11" in January 2011. It has one key on the keyboard which sticks making an irritating clicking sound that I would like to get fixed. I took it into my local iStore but they were not at all encouraging, saying they doubt that Apple warranty will cover something like this, and also that the whole keyboard would have to be replaced as they don't do individual key repairs.
This is very unreasonable to me. Firstly, the keyboard does work (is not actually broken) although the intermittent clicking sound of a single key is very irritating to me and I expect more from an Apple product than a flawed keyboard.
Any thoughts, tips and insight on this greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to conclude by saying that I did go to an Apple store and after supplying proof of purchase and verifying the warranty etc, I had my MacBook checked out by one of the technicians who (after finding that my machine was immaculate bar the sticky keyboard of course) they replaced the entire keyboard within a week.
I was so happy with the helpful and prompt service and am now so happy with my new silent keyboard!
Also wanted to add that the young guy who told me at the iStore that he doubted Apple would support this and guessed Apple likely say it was due to user damage was being a tool, and he was obviously assuming  that I had done something wrong to break my keyboard.
This was my first Mac purchase and I was delighted to find that the support is genuine and not just a rumor... I have since gone on to purchase an iPad2 will probably buy the iMac too once my trusty PC needs replacing. I was never a PC hater and got on well with windows, and was actually reluctant to make the change - but so far so good :)
    Thanks for all the help!

  • Windows Key Arrow Keys Shortcut?

    Hello!
Installed Windows 10 a few days ago and the Win+Arrow shortcut was working but has stopped working. Both the Windows key and the arrow keys function independently and my Ease of Access Mouse settings are proper in terms of Aero Snapping windows and checkboxes
and stuff. Also I insured that Turn off Windows+x HotKeys in the Local Policy Editor wasn't enabled. I'm not sure if I'm just reporting this or asking for a solution or what, but I mean it'd be cool if I could arrange windows again. If anyone needs any
    other information just ask.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Snapping Windows with Win + Arrow keys worked on my test machines. Some folks have shared that it won’t work in the Windows 10 Technical Preview 9860 version. Even after a restart, it would came back and won’t work again after a while.
Another  thing is please make sure we have installed the additional updates after we update to Windows 10 Technical Preview 9860.
KB3010668 and KB3008956. Go to PC settings ->Update and Recovery -> Windows update, click check for updates and then install if available.
For the Windows keyboard shortcut not working properly, we have another thread here:
snap assist doesnt work on build 9860
By now there seems no workaround to resolve this issue. Please wait for the future builds.

  • Top of Pop up windows are cut off- out of frame, FF 30.0

On sites where I've allowed pop-ups the pop up often displays with the top cut off (out of the frame). Never had this problem with other versions of FF. Just started when I upgraded to 30.0. Win 7, Res 1366 x 768.

Do you mean the content ''in the window'' is cut off, or the window itself is off the screen upwards of where it should be?
    ''Page content''
Could you try down-zooming the content of the pop-up by holding down the Ctrl key and tapping the - key a couple times. If that makes the content fit the pop-up, the site probably is using a fixed size window that doesn't allow for higher zoom levels.
I am not aware of a fix for that, since the values usually would be hardcoded into the site's script. But pop-up windows should be resizable. That's a hassle if you have to do it often, so perhaps there's an add-on to work around this issue.
    ''Window position''
If you can't click and drag the title bar down, try using the Windows "Move" function. With the popup window active, press Alt+Spacebar and display the window control menu. This may or may not be visible. Press M to select the move function, and press the down arrow until the title bar of the pop up appears on the screen. Then press Enter to accept the current position.
Does Firefox remember your preferred position the next time, or same problem?

  • How to make linux bootable off a usb stick on mac

Guys i was wondering how to make linux bootable off a usb stick on mac, since i dont have a optical drive in my mac, plus i need it for university

I have the same question, but parsed differently.  What people have tried answering here is:
how to (make linux (bootable off a usb stick on mac))
What I'm trying to find is:
how to make ((linux bootable off a usb stick) on mac)
That is, I don't want to boot from the usb stick on my mac; I want to write an ISO to a usb stick that's plugged into my Macbook Pro (Mavericks), then carry the stick to a different machine (several discarded Windows boxes in fact), plug it in there, and watch it boot on that machine.  I've done a bit of googling, but everything I find talks about making USB drives with content that can be booted on a Mac.  What I'm wondering is if it's possible to write to use my Mac to write bootable USB gadgets that work on other machines that aren't running OSX software.
Anyone know if this is discussed anywhere?  If not, what's the right forum to ask it on?  And how do I ask it so that I don't get yet another explanation of how to make something that will boot on my Mac?
I have several linux ISOs waiting.  Actually, I could do the job on one of several available linux boxes.  But I'd like to do it on my portable laptop, which at the moment is this Macbook Pro.

  • X201 upgrade to ssd = pay $50 for new windows key!!! Shame

A bit of a rant but hope some of you can learn from my mistake.
x201 oem hd was going out so i replaced a new ssd, sounds simple right?
Downloaded windows 7 home premium and entered the key on the bottom of my notebook and windows says the key is invalid.
Chat with microsoft and they said it is an oem version of windows and therefor I needed to speak to lenovo
Spoke to Lenovo, had a nice person on the phone, and they said:
-"well the windows key you have is to a version that is like half of windows"
    - I'm thinking to myself well there was no option to pay for only half of it when i brought it
    - lenovo rep "you need the recovery disks etc"
    - I explained x201 has no cd drive, and never did receive any disc
    - lenovo rep says "well you will need to buy a cdrom drive to usb, and also buy a recovery disc from us. If you had asked for a disc while you were in waranty we would have sent it free. But unfortunately now its $50. Sorry I'm sure we knew we didn't send the discs on purpose but thats what they have been doing"
Really bad tactics from Lenevo here.
    1. I now need to pay $50 for what I already paid for!
    2. Customer didn't really know they only got half of windows
    3. Customer paid for full windows?
And to think I just brought the company some more thinkpad notebooks.. maybe its time to take my business elsewhere. Shame for such pettiness as they do build solid machines, even though I have had a bit of trouble with mine.

I am going to stick an oar in here because this is misunderstood by many, including myself until recently.
I know the tech support person told you that what you get is a half version of windows, that is not entirely true. And just so that you know, this is a Microsoft thing so it affects all OEM's not just Lenovo.
When you purchase a new computer with Windows installed on to it, you are buying a full copy of the software. What you are not buying is tech support from Microsoft. The OEM has to provide Windows Tech Support for you. Most people never really find out what this means because the computer runs fine, or when it stops running fine, they run out and purchase a new computer.
You have a copy of Windows licensed by Lenovo. So any media used to repair your computer has to come from Lenovo. The download program that Microsoft has now is only for versions of Windows purchased in a retail box, or from their online retailer DigitalRiver. Because your copy of Windows is Licensed by Lenovo to be installed on Lenovo computers, any tech support or repair downloads have to come thru Lenovo.  You can download every version if Windows and it will not accept the key on the computer. For your key to work you need to get a copy of Windows from Lenovo.
I know this sucks but it is a licensing issue. As I said, it is the same way at Dell, IBM, Gateway, and any other company that builds systems for resale. Many small shops that buy builders licenses are also affected.
But there is a possible way out for you, bananaman mentioned it. Clone the drive. Or if you created recovery media, you can use it as well, but the drive you install it on will have to be the exact same size as the one that came with the computer.

  • Om Mac 10.8 firefox window keeps moving off screen without me touching anything so I cant accomplish anything.

I cant use firefox. It slides by itself of screen and I need to go to dock to bring it back. It happens every few minutes and sometimes even more frequently. While is off screen I am able to enter information into it. So it satays open but invisible

Are you accidentally hitting the F11 key? That will cause any open window to slide off the screen.

  • Light Up Apple Logo Rubbing Off

    Hey Everyone,
I am a fairly new Mac user and absolutely love my mac even though I have had some problems since I bought it August of last year. I really baby the laptop because I am only a college student and paid close to $3,000 for it (which I am still paying off FYI). Anyway, I always clean my laptop with computer cleaning wipes and don't use any abrasive chemicals or anything, but recently I have noticed that when I wipe the Apple Logo that lights up on the front off the case with the wipes (or anything for that matter) that it seems to "rub off" plastic. I don't know what to do because I am completely OCD with this laptop and it makes me feel bad.
Anyway, now it looks like as if there is liquid underneath the logo and honestly, all these small problems are making me loose my faith in Apple.
    Thanks in advance.
    -Damir

That was not the point, the point was to illustrate that wipes (which were fairly expensive and created specifically for the cleaning of electronic devices) clean a Toshiba Satelite well and seem to affect a MacBook Pro in a negative way. I've been a computer technician for several years (Windows based computers) and obviously know how to take care of them. This is my first Mac, but wouldn't you clean a Mac similarily to a Windows based PC? After all, it's all casing (granted that the Apple Mac case is a metal). I don't know, I am very paranoid. Do you think Apple will replace this "cosmetic defect"?

  • Wireless mouse paint underneath rubbing off

I use a wireless mouse with my macbook pro so im posting here.
Anyone have a problem with the coating underneath rubbing off? i have a smooth desk surface and the metal look of the underneath is rubbing off...it gets on my fingers too. It better not have lead in it. Im calling Apple for a warranty issue on it too.

Hi and welcome to the forums!
How long have you had this mouse, and how much do you use it? Does it have regular batteries or rechargeable. The batteries may just need changing. If you poke around in this forum, you will find LOTS of folks having similar problems.
And/or, it may have lost contact with your Mac. Hope you have another mouse! If so, try going to the Bluetooth menu and try to re-pair it.
If not, there are a couple of things that might work.
    1. Do a restart. See if the mouse is found. If not, do a complete powerdown and try again.
    2. There IS a way to use the numeric pad keys on the keyboard instead of the mouse, but the feature has to be turned-on. If yours is off, you'll need a mouse to turn it on (catch-22 anyone?).
If it's on, press the Option key 5 times. You'll hear a clicking noise, and then the numeric keys will move the cursor, and the 5 will make a mouse-click.
Then you can get to the Bluetooth menu to try to re-pair your mouse.
This feature is in System Preferences, Universal Access, Mouse. There are two radio buttons that turn the mouse keys on or off (and makes the numeric keys act mouse-like or not).
Below the radio buttons is a check box allowing the 5-time press of Option to turn the keys on or off. I believe this is NOT checked by default.
    Good luck!
