Windows laptops interfere with Timecapsule wireless network

Anyone who could help me with this problem I'd be very indebted to!
I set up my timecapsule to work as a wireless base station using all the standard settings. Works fine with my MBP and iPhone. But whenever my flatmates (who are using Vista and XP SP2) switch on their computers and connect to the internet I loose my connection to the timecapsule and the internet. Airport utility won't even recognise it as being present. As soon as they stop using the internet my connection is restored and everything works fine. I can't work out why it's happening. Tried changing channels, security protocols, upgrading and downgrading firmware, but no joy. Do I have a dud timecapsule?

Interesting... I just posted my wifi connectivity problem with my iMac, and I did have a similar symptom yesterday after I reset my Time Capsule. The problem seemed resolved, I had a solid connection, and that lasted a while. And then my daughter, who had been off her computer, signed on to the network with her MacBook. Then my connection issues started up again. Since her computer is usually on and connected, I had not had this symptom come up before.
When I get home I'll have to try to recreate this condition and see if my connection works as long as my iMac is the only thing connecting wirelessly. I know your iPhone can connect along with your Mac, but hmm...

  • Window 8 WiFi problem with Cisco wireless network

Anyone encounter a Windows 8 WiFi authentication problem with Cisco wireless network?
We are using WLC 5508, 7.2.111, and AP 3602i with WPA2.
Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPad App

This problem occurred with Soney, and Dell models.  Lenovo with Windows 8 factory installed is working fine.
Won't make any difference as these laptop's wireless NIC cards are different.
Can you try with OPEN authentication.  If the Sony and/or Dell laptop works, then you start cranking up the security and/or encryption settings until you break them.
I'm with Scott here:  It's got to be a wireless NIC card driver.
As what George has stated, post the debug of the failed attempts.

  • I have 2 macs and 2 PC laptops in my home wireless network.  Can I use the Airport/Time Capsule hard drive to back up all 4 machines?  I know that I will have to use different back up software on the PCs, but is it possible over the wireless network?

I have 2 macs and 2 PC (Windows 7) laptops in my home wireless network. (The iMac is hardwired via ethernet to the Airport/Time Capsule; the others are wireless connections using Airport).  I want to use the hard disk drive in the Time Capsule as a network backup drive for all 4 computers.  Is this possible?  Could someone help me by telling me how to configure it?  I know I will have to use different backup software in the 2 Windows 7 Laptops?  Do I need to use the Windows backup software, or can I use a third party program like Acronis True Image?  Thanks in advance for the help

It is your fault, pondini.. all your fault.
I read of all the things that go wrong restoring Time Machine backups.. particularly stupid things like mail, photo libraries don't go back.. etc. And looking through the incredible number of issues people have here, when their Mac finally takes a dive how hard it is to restore.
I restored a test hard disk from a TC.. and it takes ages and ages to even make up its mind to start.
I worked in computer support for ages, but not Macs.. so my experience is ghost.. ghost images.. on large commercial server setups, can stream restore to multiple computers at once.. even doing it computer by computer the image is simple as network boot to restore. But ghost went the way of Symantec.. sigh!! And was destroyed.
A product like clonezilla, Free linux boot cd.
    http://lifehacker.com/5078397/clonezilla-backs-up-and-restores-your-disks
Can backup a Hard disk in just about any format.. yet to try it on a Mac to a TC.. but I will. Boot from CD.. instead of your lost Lion partition which no longer exists (because the hard drive had to be replaced) and the DVD they no longer give you, and restore the entire hard disk in a couple of hours .. to the exact image at the point you made the clone.. in any format, with any partitions.
My bet is that it will kill TM .. but you could be right.
It is just the prospect of all those permission changes, photos and mail libraries etc that worry me.

  • Blank window when connecting to public wireless network

I'm having trouble connecting my Macbook Pro to the wireless network at my folks' nursing home. The MBP can see the private and public networks, but when I try to connect to the public network, a blank window pops up - no text or buttons. My nephew's Windows laptop connects with no problems. I'm running 10.7 (Lion). Any ideas?

A guess would be that your university uses a different encryption than your home wireless and that your driver has problems with that. If you search this bbs with your driver's name (and that encryption), you will also encounter a number of freeze problems when using newer kernels. However, those drivers and kernels move quick, so if you see an error in a post from 2 months ago, the error might have vanished already.
Second, you should find out the card you are using with
    lspci -nn | grep Realtek

  • Airport Express Problem with Wired/Wireless networks simultaneously

    Hello,
I'm having trouble maintaining a connection with my AX (2012) in a work environment.  Basically, I have a Win 7 laptop connected via ethernet to the internet/corporate net.  I have configured the AX to create a separate wifi network that does not connect to the internet. In order to connect to the AX, I have to disable both the Ethernet adapter and the WLAN adapter, enable the WLAN adapter, connect it to the AX's network, and wait for it to show up in the utility.  Only then can I re-enable the ethernet adapter for internet access.  Then, inevitably, the connection dies within 15 minutes and I have to repeat the whole process.
Can anyone tell me what's going on here?  Is the wired network interfering with the wireless network?  Is something configured wrong?  Below is the output from ipconfig/all, if that helps.  The AX is configured with a 169.254 range. IP address and behaves the same way whether the IP address is auto or manual, and there is no difference if the signal roams channels or is fixed to a single channel (I've played with them all).
Thanks in advance for your help.

Here goes - read this through completely and see if it makes sense:
    1.  Reset the Express to factory settings by unplugging it and plugging it back in while holding in the reset button - release the button when the light starts blinking - then wait for the light to blink slowly indicating factory default.
    2.  Disable the wireless and enable the ethernet on the laptop and connect an ethernet cable to the WAN port (the circle of dots) of the Express and use the AU toset it up in bridge mode to create a wireless network with a name of your choice - you don't really need a password but you can assign one if you wish - if you do not use a password you will have to choose to ignore the error message for no security.
    3.  Accept all other defaults and ignore any messages about not having an internet or ethernet connection and update or finish the setup - if you get a blinking amber light, open the AU and correct any error messages.
    4. You can now disconnect the ethernet cable and disable the ethernet on the laptop and enable the wireless so you can stream iTunes to the Express - the laptop must stay wireless to do this - you can not accesss both at the same time - you can also use an iPhone or iPad or iPod to use Airplay and then you can use the laptop via ethernet for the internet.
    5.  To access the Express from now on, you have to use the AU wirelessly from the laptop.
The above is assuming that you don't currently have wireless in your office - the other alternatives are:
    1.  To hardwire the Express and have it create a wireless network and access the internet - you could then use your laptop wirelessly or wired to connect to the Express and use Airplay and your pc at the same time.
    2.  If your office has wireless, you can set up the Express to "join" the existing network - you can then do the same as in number 1.
I hope this helps - everyone's situation is different - the above scenarios work for me - you might have to do some tweaks but the info is there - let me know if you have any questions.

  • Can people interfere with the wireless signal?

This is strange and I can't figure it out.  My Linksys WRT54GSv5 router works fine with my notebook accessing the internet. When certain friends of mine come over, the wireless internet quits working the minute they enter my kitchen, that's where my notebook computer is.  I'm connected to the wireless network, but no web pages will load.  When they leave, everything works again without rebooting or anything.  Is there an explanation for this?

This has happened 4 times in a row when they came over.  Yesterday, while they were walking up to my house, I tried to load a web page on my notebook and it worked fine.  The minute they entered the kitchen, I tried a web page again and it would not load.  I wonder if there is a device that may interfere with the wireless signal that they have with them.  There was no microwave in use.  As far as I know, my friends are not robots.  But maybe they are aliens from another planet.  Seriously, I can't figure out why this is happening.

    Hi Drgeert-
The hub may not be broken per se, but Apple has made adjustments to the limits on current that can be drawn from ports.
You probably need a new hub.

  • Trouble with Apple Wireless networks

I have aan extended wireless network in our house, across four apple wireless devices: Time Capsule (which is the lead device), an airport extreme (dual-band), an airport extreme (dual band II) and an Airport Express 802.11n.
The dual-band II is a new device and since I have incorporated it i have had issues with the wireless network that only seem to be solved if we turn the Express off.  The Express is in a Kitchen, which is beneath a study where the Extreme dual band II is.
Does anyone have any idea why there might be a problem (seems like some kind of wave interference) and how i solve it.  I put the express in the kitchen so I could connect it to a Sonos device, which then allows me to use airplay with the Sonos.
    Regards
    Edward

Since all of your AirPorts are 802.11n models, you can only have one base station that will be extended. You can have more than one to extend it. So, in this case, the two 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn) & the AXn would be attempting to extend the wireless range of the Time Capsule (TC).
Think of it as the TC is at the hub of a wheel and each of the extending base station would be on individual spokes of that wheel. The issue here would be the farther away an extending base station is, the less bandwidth that will be available at that part of the extended network ... and possibly why you are getting the results that you are.
By default, the AXn (or any AirPort will not be set to extend a network. You would have to set this as an option within the AirPort Utility. If you didn't already do this for the AXn, then it would be in its default configuration of a wireless router that would be broadcasting its own wireless network ... and NOT extending the TC's network.

  • I have been using 3 devices with my wireless network, and suddenly none of them work.  I've tried turning off the modem and router but that hasn't fixed the problem.

I've been using iPhone, iPad and MacBook with my wireless network, and suddenly, none of them will connect.  The first sign I had that there ws a problem was when I was asked multiple times to re-enter the password, but regardless of how many times I did so it wasn't successful.  I've tried turning off and on the moden and router but that doesn't help.  Suggestions please?

go into the routers setup and redo the setup like it have disabled the whole wifi system
how you set it up depend on the router you own consult the manual or go to the router maker's website

For me, presonall, becasue the Mac will run OS X, while the windows machine will run, well, Windows.  Seriously, whenever given the option, I greatly prefer to use OS X over windows without hesitation.  I buy Apple hardware because I prefer OS X to Windows and have since the OS X public beta.  Apple hardware is very good quality, but so are many Windows PC (Lenovo IMO makes some great hardware, if picking a Windows machine).
I use windows at work because that's what they give me, but I'd not pick it if given the choice.

  • I got the message "Your handheld has been registered with the wireless network" from blackberry?

So I got my curve 9360 about 3 months ago and last night I got a message from blackberry saying "Your handheld has been registered with the wireless network". I don't have a data plan but after I got this message I was able to go on the internet without wifi.. I thought it was extremely weird and I was scared my carrier, Rogers, will charge me so I turned my data off. I asked my dad today and he said I could use it and we won't pay if they charge me.. I'm still really worried that I'll get a ridicous bill at the end of the month. So why did I randomly get data and will it charge me? What should I do?

I've heard through the Rogers support forums that Rogers is offering a free data trial to its users.  I haven't seen anything official yet, but I've heard that on atleast two occasions so far.
For that reason, I would go ahead and enjoy your free data while it lasts.  If you're really worried about it, call Rogers to confirm it.  Just remember, you never signed a data plan agreement with them so they can't charge you for it.
    I hope that helps you.

  • Wireless laptop interferes with wired desktop

Just finished installing a WRT54GX4 router (after a 30 minute call to support). When the wireless laptop tries to connect to my WPA2 connection my wired desktop connection "blinks" or disconnects temporarily. The result is that my desktop connections returns and the wireless laptop is not able to stay connected. This must be a "sharing" problem with the IP addresses. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue? Thanks

Firtst of all, I do not understand what you mean by "I can not access 192.168.1.1 setup on the laptop.  I've tried using my WPA2 network name as the UserName and it's password and the default admin password is not working either."
When you access your router, you should be using a wired computer.
When you access 192.168.1.1 you should be using the router's login user name (if any) and login password.  These have nothing to do with WPA2, the network name (= SSID), or the encryption password.  Unless you gave your router a user name, it should be blank.  Normally you only need the login password to enter the router setup pages.  If you cannot enter your router, then sadly, it is time to reset your router to factory defaults, and setup the router again.
Your laptop is set to a fixed LAN IP address of 192.168.1.3.  Is there some reason you are doing this?  In most cases, you would want the laptop to obtain an IP address automatically from the router's DHCP server.
Do you have any other devices (computers, printers, etc) that are on your network.  If so, what address are they using?
Also, I assume that the desktop's 192.168.1.100 was assigned from the router's DHCP server.  Is this correct?  If the desktop has been set to this as a fixed address, it is in violation of the Linksys rules for assigning fixed LAN IP addresses.
With Linksys routers, a fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be assigned in the device that is using the address.  So you need to enter the fixed address in the computer or printer, not in the router.
When using a Linksys router, any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range (typically 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.149), and it cannot end in 0, 1,  or 255.
Therefore any fixed LAN IP address would need to be in the range of
    192.168.1.2       thru 192.168.1.99  or
    192.168.1.150  thru  192.168.1.254
assuming you have not changed the default DHCP server range.
If you are running an unsecured wireless network, then your neighbor may have a wireless device with an illegal fixed LAN IP address.  In this case, secure your wireless network.
Just because your router is new, do not assume that your firmware is up to date.  Many routers sit on the shelf for months before you buy them.  To find your firmware version, login to your router, and look in the upper right corner of the page.  Your firmware version should be listed there.  If not, go to the Status pages of the router.

  • Windows does not connect to wireless network on startup! Please help!.

Hello. A few days ago i watched a tutorial on youtube on how to remove the red "x" problem over my internet icon, by deleting a file called "Config" in "Network" by opening"Regedit". I know see that I never should
have done that. I did that, and after that every time when I start up my computer it will not automatically connect to my wireless network as it did before i deleted that "Config" file.
Anoyone out there that know how I can fix this?. Thanks.

    Hi,
Before we edit the registry, have we performed a backup of the registry files?  Do we have any backup available before the changes? If yes, please take use of the backups.
Besides, could you please have a share for which tutorial you have followed? Or please share with the full registry path?
Have you tried to reconfigure the wireless network settings with your laptop?

  • AirPort Express connected to a Windows LAN already with a wireless router

My apologies if this is out there, I can't seem to find this answer....
I have a curent LAN with several Windows based PCs. There is a wireless router that is used by the Windows laptops.
My iPad works ok (not great) on this network but I am looking at putting in an AirPort in the main room in my house where the iPad is used. My hope is that this will improve performance.
    two questions:
    1) will this make a difference in wireless connectivity (speed/performance )?
    2) can this model work- Airport in a current wireless environment.

Wireless bandwidth and speed fall off as the distance increases between the source producing the wireless network and the device receiving it. Any obstructions in the signal path will slow the wireless much more than distance alone.
You haven't told us anything about the construction type of your home or the number of obstructions like walls or ceilings in the signal path. If you have a line-of-sight relationship between the main router and your iPads, then you will likely see little difference in performance compared to having a device producing a wireless network in the same room as the iPads.
If you consider that a "typical" wall of sheetrock and 2x4 construction in a home will on average, absorb about 15-20% of the signal...and you have 3-4 walls in the signal path, or a ceiling (which is thicker than a wall) and few walls, I think you already have your answer about whether it would be wise to locate the AirPort Express in the same room or close to the area where the iPads will normally be used.
