Windows like Channels, can they open downwards ?

Pshop CS4
If I have floating image windows as opposed to tabs, and when I select layers, the layer flyout comes out sideways and sits behind my images so I cant access it. How do I get it to show on top of an image ?
I have been with Photoshop since the early days and flyout occurred downwards, so the windows column of options like actions, histogram, layers etc never did this and was always viewable, but how do I get it go open downwards in CS4, its forever occupying my screen forcing me to use far less screen and I cant see what I am doing on the images. I have always had my images touching edge of palettes at right making them big enough to work on and those palettes opening downwards. Now with CS4 they open sideways reducing my working area drastically. I need to have two images open at the same time for this job so floating images is required.
Would perhaps CS5 resolve this design of interface issue or is there a fix for CS4 or an option for open downwards I am missing as a setting somewhere ? I can't see it in help.

You can do a few things to make cs4 act like some of the older versions,
but there are quite a few quirks in how the non tabbed interface works in
cs4/cs5 as say compared to cs so in cs4/cs5 you really can't get it the
same.
You can get the palettes (panels) to expand downwards by double clicking on the name
like layers instead of clicking on the top of the panel. The only thing is unlike say cs,
if you had all the palettes linked together and double clicked on the top of the upper most
palette, all the palettes would collapse or expand. In cs4/cs5 only one panel at a time will
collapse, and the same goes for expanding.
Added: others may have better suggestions than i, since i have
           kinda forced myself to get used to the tabbed interface.
