Windows ME to connect to MacBook to transfer files

Okay.....so I've been trying [unsucessfully] to transer my stuff from my pc to the mac.
I'm running Microsoft Windows ME and Mac OS Tiger.
I've read many discussions at apple.com and went to a few sites that had step by step guides. [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2892220?]
I followed this one exactly, except when I rebooted it didn't give a login window asking for a username or password. [http://joelshoemaker.com/computer/mac/macfilesharing.html]
I've connected the cross over cable to both computers. The work folders are named the same, everything on the Apple side is configured correctly as I did call support.
It's the Windows side that doesn't recognize the IP address from the Mac.
I tried connecting to my pc from my mac [go > connect to server] using the IP of my pc and it gives an error message:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data could not be read or written. Error code 36."
This message comes whether the cable is connected or not.
I am at such a loss at this point and I don't know what to do.
Please help!
White MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I had the same problem about 2 or 3 years ago, except I was connecting a Windows ME to Panther (Mac 10.3).
I recall having a lot of trouble, and so I made some notes for myself at the time in case I ever had to do it again. I've forgotten now how to do it myself, but here are the notes in case they are any use to you. Good luck.
To access/manipulate Mac files from a Windows ME (NEC) computer need to do the following:
On the Mac:
• In Preferences > Sharing Panel, turn on Windows Sharing
On the Windows machine (NEC) need to do the following:
• For the Mac in question, set up a user account name on the NEC. The user name must be the same as that Mac user’s “Short name”. (To find the Mac user’s short name open up “Preferences–Accounts, then choose a user on the Mac)
• Go to the control panel and choose “users”. This brings up the User list panel: select “New User”
• Set up a new user by following the instructions. The new user name must be the same as the Short Name on the Mac. (Also need to give the new user a password for when they log into the NEC – this should be different to the Mac password).
When using the NEC to log on to the Mac need to do the following:
♣ Turn on NEC.
♣ Log in using the user name which is the same as the Mac Short Name (but the password you use at this point is the one for this NEC account, not the Mac)
♣ Open “My Network Places”
♣ Open “Entire Network”
♣ Click on “Workgroup” (note: this icon sometimes takes a few minutes to appear)
♣ Choose the computer to connect to: note its name is given as the subnet name in Panther
♣ Then the icon with the “Short Name” of the Mac appears. Click on it.
♣ Enter the password – this is the same password used when logging on to that Mac (but the password will not be asked for if you previously left the ‘remember this password’ box checked.)
Note: The Windows machine will automatically remember your Mac password unless you uncheck the appropriate box (I prefer to do so for security reasons, but it's easy to make a mistake and leave the box checked)
In order to see the NEC on my iMac flat panel running OS 10.3 I had to open "Directory Access" in the Utilities folder. Have to unlock the panel, then write administrator's password, then double-click "SMB". Then, in the box labelled "WINS Server" type in the name of the Windows computer. Have to then puts in administrator' password again, and should then lock the panel. A folder called "MSHOME" appears in the Network folder on the iMac. Can access files on the NEC by burrowing in through this.

  • New Macbook Pro transfer files from older Macbook Pro through WiFi--- BIG MISTAKE!! Two days of transferring!!

I just bought the new MacPro 2012, why does the transfer of my files from my old MacbookPro to the new MacbookPro taking so long? It is taking over 2 days over the WIFi!! It is ridiculous! Why did Apple give up firewire? Maybe this is a complaint. There should have been a warning on the possible length of time that it takes to transfer files. Most of us have photos, video and applications to transfer. There needs to be another way to transfer files. Am I missing something?? What if I needed to USE my laptop for work? it has been out of commission for 2 days, because of the transfer. Should I interrupt it? What should I do?

    You waited two days?
I would have stopped after two hours.
I can do a full drive clone in under 2 hours, migrate manually in about a half a hour using a external drive.
Should I interrupt it? What should I do?
Yes, and there is obviously something wrong with one or the other machines.
I would hold the command r keys down and boot the new Mac into Recovery
Then use Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD partition
(use one step from the right if it's a hard drive and wait, it's better for it**),
Then reinstall 10.7 from Apple's servers (you need ID and password)
Install 10.7 compatible programs from fresh original sources (older PPC based ones from 10.5 and 10.6 won't run)
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
You can learn how to reinstall your free iLife here as well as learn about Lion Recovery HD (partition on the boot drive)
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Then create other user accounts (if necessary) and then transfer files manually into the same named account's when logged into them.
You get a cleaner machine, because you find out what user files are corrupted on the original drive as those won't transfer as the drive will get stuck on them when you try copying/writing them in some cases.
This is know as a "fresh install" method, because basically only vetted files are returned to a new machine. Everything else is fresh and clean.
I do this method with all new machines and haven't have a lick of trouble ever. Hard drives can be slightly problematic.
**Sometimes what happens is a hard drive can't write data, this is where the secure erase method come in if it's a hard drive, as it maps off bad sectors ahead of time before laying of data when the secure erase is checked to make sure it occured.

  • Can't connect to pc to transfer files

I've gotten to the part where you put our username/domain and password in but not sure if that is the PC's usn/psw or mine that i use to sign into my mac? I've tried both but still no luck. It won't let me connect to transfer my files to the mac. Any suggestions on trying to connect to the network?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Here's one way you can approach this:
On the PC right click on the C: hard drive and then click the Sharing Tab, in the lower box check 'Share this folder on the network' and 'Allow network users to change my files' - if you don't want it to appear on the Mac Desktop as HDD (C:) give it another name. Close the panel.
On the Mac open System Preferences/Sharing and check 'File Sharing' then hit the Options button and check the third box "Share files and folders using SMB (Samba) Windows then add at least one username/account there which has read/write access to your hard drive (usually your own) then click 'Done' and close the Sharing panel.
Lastly on your Mac Desktop go to the top menu bar and select Go/Connect to server and in the pop up window that appears enter smb://nameofPC and hit connect - often the first time you will see a username/password dialogue appear and in this you enter a username/account on the PC
If all goes well you will then see the C: icon on your Desktop and be able to open/browse and copy files across from the PC to the Mac, permissions depending you will be able to write to most folders on the PC from the Mac but not everything.
To speed things up next time drag the PC hard drive icon that's now on your Desktop into your Favourites folder - then all you need do next time is double-click on that to open.
It's also possible to access the Mac from the PC by using CTRL E to bring up Explorer then Network Connections then Windows Local Network and the Mac 'should' appear for you to login. I've found it best to have Workgroup set to 'local' on both Mac and PC for this to work right however.

  • I cannot transfer files from XP to Windows Vista notebook

    Hi,
I recently bought laptop with windows vista on it. My other computer has windows xp. I would like to transfer files from wndows xp to vista, when I do I am unable to open this. I also receive e mails that have excel (xls) files attached and I am unable to open them, Can anyone advise? Thanks for taking the time to read this.
    Message was edited by: angieos

How do you exactly mean: transferring files? Would you like to copy them to the machine with Vista?
And regarding the Excel (*.xls) files, you need Microsoft Excel which is in the Microsoft Office Package. That means if you have no Microsoft Office for Vista then you will need to purchase one to open and edit Excel files.

  • Home Sharing works, but not able to transfer files between PCs.

I have two laptops at home, one is an old one I keep dedicated to my Apple TV 2nd Gen. (so I don't have to have my laptop on, or my wife can use the ATV if I'm at work w/ my laptop, etc.)
Anyway, I sync all my media between both computers so when my laptop is not home, ATV still has full media function (as does my laptop).  Used to be able to connect via Home Sharing and there was a drop-down menu with an option at the bottom of the Library to show only those files not in my library.  I would use that function to transfer all recently added media to the ATV laptop.  Since upgrading to iTunes 10, that dropdown menu is nowhere to be found.  Any ideas?
I can still connect and play media through Home Sharing, but if my primary laptop leaves the range of the network, the new media content on it can't be accessed on ATV.  Primary laptop is Windows 7, ATV-dedicated lap is on Windows XP.
Was the ability to transfer files through Home Sharing lost between iTunes 9 and 10 or did this feature just get moved somewhere else?  If it was lost, how can I revert back to iTunes 9?  If nothing else, I can just transfer via an external HD, but was just very convenient and easy through Home Sharing...
    Thanks for any input!

Buy a portable wi-fi router with file sharing such as MOCREO 5-in-1 Portable WiFi (not personaly vouching for this one it just happens to be the one I have and it cost less than the apple connection cables).
Plug your USB stick into the router
Connect your phone via wi-fi to the router.
Log into the routers built in file managment or use any FTP capable app to connect (GoodReader, ifiles, etc)
    Transfer files.

  • What hbmi cord do I need to connect my Macbook Pro retina display to a Windows desktop?

I'm trying to connect my Windows desktop to my Macbook Pro retina dispay so i can transfer CD's. ALthough I dont know what cord to get.

Your post is a little confusing. HDMI is for connecting video, like hooking your Mac to a TV. It sounds like you want to transfer files. If you have a wireless network, just share the folder with the music on your Windows machine and you should be able to copy it to your Mac.

  • How long does it take to transfer files from Windows to Macbook Pro

    Hi guys
I just got a macbook pro (not the one with retina display)
I have all of my files on my windows and just started to set up my mac using the windows transfer program, but it is taking a really long time. The estimate time remaining jumps between 30-35 hours. This is over Wi-Fi. I have read that it is faster using an Ethernet cable, I think I have one that is pluged into connecting both computers, but it isn't speeding anything up.
What should I do? I don't want to leave either computer on for such a long time. (is there anything I should put my Mac on so it doesn't overheat, its currently on a wood table).
Should I stop it? I dont want to ruin anything on the computer so soon. If so, how do I do it. I had already started to transfer files earlier today but accidently closed the Mac, which stopped the process and couldn't restart it again, so I turned it off since I couldn't find anything on the screen to stop it.
I have an external harddrive that was connected to my windows, would it be faster to hold the mac's power button, start the startup again and just connect the external harddrive?
    Please help. Thanks in advance.

Wi-Fi is slowest. Wi-fi must fight interference and other environmental challenges that cables don't have to worry about at all.
Cabled Ethernet would be much faster. If your Windows computer has Gigabit Ethernet, it could actually be faster than FireWire.

I would only abort if there is a safe way to (like a visible Cancel button), otherwise you may lose data.
Connecting the external hard drive to the Mac could work, but if the hard drive is formatted with the NTFS disk format, you must have extra software on your MacBook Pro that can read that. If the drive is formatted as FAT32, it should work since Macs can read (but not write to) that Windows disk format.

  • How to connect my macbook pro to a windows network

Hey... I have used my MacBook outside of the office all the time, but know we are going to use it for business purposes. We have a "basic" windows network to share files, folders, printers and scanners.  How do I start connecting my MacBook to this network.

    Hi alex,
It probably depends on which OS you're on; the following is for 10.6.8.
If you're trying wirelessly, I think you can open System Preferences > Network > click on the lock and enter your password if it's locked > select AirPort > in the dropdown menu next to Network Name select Join other network and enter the info asked for > click Apply if it's not grayed out.
If ethernet, click on Ethernet > Advanced > click on the Ethernet tab > select Automatically in the Configure dropdown menu > click on OK > click on Apply.

  • HT200131 When I connect my MacBook Air to my TV using Apple TV, the audio stays on my MacBook and does not transfer to my TV. Thus the volume is very low when I am watching a Movie on my TV and I have to listen to the volume from my laptop. How can I fix

When I connect my MacBook to my television using Apple TV the audio stays on the MacBook and doesn't transfer to the TV. How can I make it so I can hear the Movie or Video through my TV's speakers and not my MacBook's?

This is called "extended desktop mode".  It's an extension of the desktop off to the right (by default) of your MBair screen.  Grab an app and drag it off the right side of your MBair screen and it will appear on the TV.
To mirror your MBair screen on the TV you can press Command F1.  This will toogle between mirror and extended desktop.
You can find all the settings in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab.

I am trying to connect my macbook pro to a windows 7 server pc. I keep getting a connection failed message  saying "The server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally". Any ideas on how to resolve this? I cannot find the the volumes or know where to look for this volume

Depends on your model TV.   Read your TV user manual.  The newer models have "how to hookup" instructions for computer & games.
You can also do a forum search as well as a Google search.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you have the cable, just connect it to both and the desktop will show up on the external display. Then, you can select different modes, changing arrangement in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement, or using shortcuts > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5019

  • How do I connect my defunct MacBook Pro (monitor's dead, HD works fine) to another computer to transfer files?

I have an old MacBook Pro whose monitor recently died. I took it to the genius bar to get assessed and ended up buying a MacBook Air to replace it. The genius hooked up my external hard drive to the MacBook Pro and did something with the way she started up the MacBook Pro so that I could get my files off of it and onto the external hard drive while it was plugged into another computer so I could see the files there. However, I failed to transfer some files that I really want. Now I'm trying to figure out how to transfer them on my own. And I can't make it work.
Here's what I have to work with:
    - The monitor-less MacBook Pro, which still turns on.
    - The new MacBook Air.
    - The external hard drive, which I connect to the old MacBook Pro via 6-pin FireWire and the new MacBook Air via a thurnderbolt-to-9-pin-FireWire-to-6-pinFireWire converter.
Would love to hear your ideas so I can avoid another genius bar appointment if possible (as they take forever).
