Windows Media-9.sitx

When I go to some websites, I'm told I don't have the plug-in to view videos, etc, and am directed to the Windows Media download center, where I click on the Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X to download. What comes up every time I've tried this is what looks like a text file beginning with: StuffIt!°JªÖ*+±Rõµ∂+s#Dõ{gXõ∞f+ÀF∏++”.!T+∑]¬Rõqó0U+◊]¬≠+Á]¬X+ÔªÑkõ`7ú3ôwî

Mulder:
Were you on the X Files?
I tried that and it downloaded fine. Presumably it will work on some sites (and as the icon looked familiar, I may have already had a older version.) But on the site I'm trying to view, it still says: The page “weather | azcentral.com | arizona weather” has content of MIME type “application/x-mplayer2”, but you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type. A plug-in should be available on this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=windows&sbp=mediaplayer&ar=media&sb a=plugin&
So, I still can't view the video clips on that page. Apparently, they are just not Mac-friendly. I guess I'll have to give up if they don't make an OS10.5 version. Thanks anyway.

  • Problems during installing windows media player

    hello,
i've been trying to download windows media player, and each time i do- the folder is downloaded as windows media-4.sitx, and i've having hard time to finish the download.

While there are links online to get the MS WMP for Mac version 9 for OS X, the
serviceability of this old windows media player from Microsoft may not be suitable
for OS X 10.5.x and may not be capable of running the latest WMP content.
You could still get and try it. Here's a link to Microsoft (Mac) support:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/flip4mac.mspx
{This ^ gives internal links to Flip4Mac and WMP for Mac v.9 so it may be an
idea to check with the Flip4Mac site directly, too, for any newer version. By
looking into the Flip4Mac link at Microsoft, I see the specs say this will open
    the same versions as WMP v9 for Mac. This may be old product info.}
Newer site for Flip4Mac= Telestream Flip4Mac WMV (overview)
    http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm
( The free WMV player in the above site links-back to Microsoft.com's flip4mac )
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
This is a relatively new Quicktime plugin by Flip4Mac for Windows Media Player:
    File Name: Flip4Mac WMV 2.3.0.14.dmg

  • Windows Media Player in Mac OSX 10.4

I recently upgraded to 10.4 a few months ago, and before I did that, I had Windows Media Player installed on Saffari. When I Upgraded, it still worked, but when I upgraded my other Mac to 10.4, I tried to install Windows Media Player on Safari but it did mot work. My guess is that 10.4 does not recognize the .sitx format that previously worked on my 10.3. So is there another version of Windows Media Player that I'm just not seeing, or can I download another player for Safari?

    Hi Tanner,
My guess is that 10.4 does not recognize the .sitx format that previously worked on my 10.3
Mac OS X 10.4 no longers comes with StuffIt Expander. You'll need to install that to be able to use .sitx files.

  • Windows media player not recognized as a valid plug-in in safari?

on this PB 15 1.67/OS 10.4.3 I experienced some difficult in installing a piece of software, here's the thread....
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1360929#1360929
prior to this difficulty, I had installed windows media player to access video clips embedded on news web sites etc, and everything worked fine, video usually streamed right into the media player, not saving a file to the desktop, but merely playing in a window....
to solve the software install problem above, I returned to the apple store & they suggested and helped me accomplish an archive & re-install of the OS, and afterwards, the problem software installed properly...
since the archive & re-install of OS 10.4.3, my windows media player is not recognized as a valid plug-in by safari.
when I click on a video link (embedded), a seperate window appears that describes my need to install windows media player 9 for mac (and it's already in my app's folder), when I download the file to attempt re-installing media player, stuffit doesn't seem to un zip the file after double clicking on it, no app file appears on the desktop to mount in the apps dierctory?
if the video link is not embedded, I can cntrl-click and save the file to the desktop and it will play normally, but if the file is embedded I have no means to see the news clip etc?
also, for those video files that are not embedded, instead of playing directly via streaming, when a link is clicked, the file downloads to the desktop before playing?
these aren't huge problems (well when trying to view an embedded news clip it is!) but any help in trying to return to normal behaviour would help!
    thanks again,

thanks for the link, but I wa really looking into making the win media player function as it had before I had to archive & re-load OS 10.4.3
I use the player infrequently, but it drives me crazy when I'm looking @ a news page w/an embedded video and can't merely click it's link & see the clip!
any thoughts on why I can't get the win media player sitx file to un-stuff and possibly re-install win media player to allow safari to recognize it as a valid plug-in?
    thanks again....

  • Any problems with Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X?

I want to be able to play video from CNN.com, but it says I need Windows Media Player 9. Before I download it, I want to know if it is reliable.
    I've already got Flip4Mac, and that doesn't help. (I get a -2048 error.)
Please share experiences with Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X so I can decide whether or not to download it.
    Thanks,
    Matt

The default application you're looking for is "Stuffit Expander".
http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/ is the page you'll be looking for...think Winzip for Mac. Once stuffit is installed you should be able to open the .sitx or .hqx file you may have downloaded...essentially a package that stuffit can open for you so you can install media player.

  • Windows Media Player for mac

I just downloaded it and it has an icon on my desktop that says Windows Media.sitx. When I click on it it says :
There is no default application specified to open the document windows media.sitx

Download and install Flip4Mac; Windows Media Player is outdated on Mac OS X, and should not be used. If you want to use WMP anyway, open the file with StuffIt Expander.

  • Windows Media Player for MacBookPro

I was unable to download the Windows player for the Macbook Pro. It downloaded as a 'sitx' file which mac did not know how to translate.
Is there a way to get the windows player onto the new laptop range - or is the intel processor causing a blip here.
    Any tips?
    MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I was unable to download the Windows player for the
Macbook Pro. It downloaded as a 'sitx' file which mac
did not know how to translate.
If you are downloading Windows Media Player you will also need to download Stuffit Expander as Microsoft have used Stuffit to compress the installation file and Tiger now no longer comes with Stuffit.
Once you have expanded the .sit file you can then run the Windows Media Player installer.
Windows Media is not a Univeral binary
Is there a way to get the windows player onto the new

There are other options for Windows Media files.
VLC which is a universal binary
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
Flip4Mac allows you to play Windows Media files through Quicktime, however it is not a universal binary so
    a) you have to run the installer app through Rosetta to install Flip4Mac
    b) Quicktime also has to run through Rosetta to play Windows Media files with Flip4Mac
    c) Safari (and other browsers) need to run through Rosetta to play embedded Windows Media files on webpages

  • Downloading windows media player help!

A lot of movies I try to watch on the web require WMP. I went to Microsofts page and downloaded the OSX version. It went straight to my desktop(looks like this: windows media.sitx) When I click on it, it give me an error saying ERROR OPENING MOVING. It looks like it is trying to use quiktime to open it. I am new to mac, so if anyone has any ideas how I can download WMP it would really help thanks!!!

If you have an Intel Mac then you probably don't even want to fool with WMP as it is not universal and Microsoft has stopped development of the product for the Mac. You might try Flip4Mac instead.

  • OMG I'm going crazy!  (Windows Media Install not happening)

Whatever happened to Macs are supposed to be intuitive? Not so, not at least coming from system 9.2 to osx (v10.2). Anyway, I'm simply trying to get Windows Media Player to install and it's NOT happening! I've tried everything I can think of to make this install, YES I HAVE STUFFIT, and all I have now is a boatload of "Windows Media.sitx." everywhere. I've tried different downloads, and yes, I have many of those now too. I seem to have everything except a BRAIN - ugh. Can someone please send in the cavalry?
    G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Version 6 should be okay, ensure that you are in fact
using version 6 to actually open the compressed file
and not an earlier version still on your Mac.
    iFelix
I did a clean reinstall when I put on OSX, so the stuffit I'm using is v6 for sure. Any other suggestions?

  • How do I get WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER for Mac to work?!

I just purchased a mac for the first time and so far I love it except certain videos I try and download seem to require Windows Media Player which is no problem except for every time I download the Mac version it shows up as a Windows.stix file and is just a bunch of garbage it also says that the system doesn't know what to open it with. Basically, its not an installation application like the file should be. Everyone else I know has downloaded this file fine but my luck is not that goood. Does anyone know why this would be happening or could it just be my computer?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The SITX file has to be opened with http://www.stuffit.com/ 's Stuffit Expander.
Note Windows Media for Mac will not open DRMed videos. For that you need a copy of Windows to install on your Mac.
You may want to consider writing anyone who just has DRMed videos to make their videos more accessible by making them either available via Quicktime or Realplayer, reminding them Quicktime Broadcaster is free.

  • Windows Media Player 9.0 for OS X

This is more of a windows program-mac compatibility, rather than a mac program-windows compatibility (because we all know that everything apple makes is universally compatible, not so for Microsoft, which is why apple ROCKS!) but anyways...got a little sidetracked hehe: Why is it that when I try to download Windows Media Player 9.0 for OS X: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/windowsmediaplayerformacosx.html it downloads as Windows Media.sitx, which is a windows application because it is unable to open it in OS X...isn't it supposed to be FOR OS X? Any help would be great, thank you!

The following list covers most all video playback needs for the Mac:
    Flip4Mac Flip4Mac
(Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported)
    VLC
    Real Player
    Perian

  • Installing Windows Media 9 - help??

I'm trying to upgrade my windows media player to wmp 9 but i dont know which program to use to open the downloaded file from the apple website. The file is a .sitx and the computer doesent automatically open it, just gives you the option to choose an application.
    help?

I had the same problem but had loads of problems with the latest version of stuffit expander. If you have any issues with the program quitting on startup then search the site from the other post for version 9.0.2. Since I downloaded the older version I've had no trouble at all. Just in case!

  • Downloading Windows Media Player on Mac

Not sure if this is the right section or not so sorry if it's in the wrong place.
I'm trying to download Windows Media Player but the installer file is a .sitx. I can't figure out how to install it with this. I'm very new to mac so please explain it to me so I can understand it.

You need to download and install Stuffit Expander, available free from Stuffit.com in order to open .sit (Stuffit) files.

  • Installing Windows Media Player from the .bin format

I am trying to download WMP. I just downloaded it through the apple site but when I downloaded it the file was in the .bin format, titled "WindowsMediaInstaller.bin". I then tried to open this file with stuffit, and this produced another file titled "Windows Media.sitx". I am unsure about how to open this file to complete the installation.
    Thanks!!!

  • Cant find right media player on Mac for Windows Media Mpeg-4 files

o Must transfer WMP mpeg 4 files via bluetooth to mac
o Have tried DivX converter = "unknown error (-2041)
DivX player = nothing, just blinking pause button
Flip 4mac (WMV) = won't read (won't even make itself available as option for file)
VLC = picture but no sound (yay)
Windows Media Player = won't read (won't even make itself available as option for file)
Quick time = "invalid sample description found in movie"
MPlayer 0SX2 = picture but no sound (yay, and yes volume is turned up on all devices)
It's only a few files stuck on broken Sprint PPC 6700 which I am exchanging for new one but want to preserve a few short home movies. Can't hook up w/ windows pc because that's the part that's broken (cable jack) and must use blue tooth, my windows pc has no blue tooth. Files transfer and play but at best it's just video and no audio.
Am off to store for blank cd to see if I can burn files to disc on mac and a memory card (for phone) for temp back up. But don't know if that will solve problem, just band-aids.
    thx

    Hi Tanner,
My guess is that 10.4 does not recognize the .sitx format that previously worked on my 10.3
Mac OS X 10.4 no longers comes with StuffIt Expander. You'll need to install that to be able to use .sitx files.
