Windows Media Centre - Windows Media Foundation - Windows Apps. Replacement for WMC

Still looking for a PVR replacement but DVBLogic looks like it might do the job.
Have gone down the Plex Windows App route (The clostest replacement to WMC player so far) but they are saying they are hamstrung by limitations of the App sandbox? and Windows Media Foundation.
I need some concrete information from the Windows Media Centre People or Windows Media Foundation people so that developers can be steered in the right direction to help people like me switch over from WMC to something else without major headaches, frustrations,
days and days of conversion and metadata reentry.
My post from Microsoft Community
Hi,
Since Windows Media Centre almost didn't make it into Windows 8 I have been looking to move to something else before it disappears for good.
While it might just make it into Windows 10 there certainly won't be any future development.
I not a big fan of Microsoft products but WMC is one application they nailed
Some additional smart recording options
i.e. I had to add "The Big Bang Theory - Return", "The Big Bang Theory - New", "The Big Bang Theory - Finale" etc to my series recording
A proper library manager (Plex does a great job of this) e.g. by series, season, episode - Movies - Documentaries etc with additional data downloaded.
A few more playable formats/containers
It would be perfect.
A proper Library wasn't as important as most of the metadata could be viewed directly in windows explorer.
Not supported with other containers.
This brings me to the first obstacle.
All the alternatives I have looked at so far can't or won't support .wtv files
Converting the files to another format/container loses all the explorer properties. (And some of the metadata completely)
Discussions I have had so far are pointing the finger at the "Windows Media Foundation"
I.e. Developers can't do anything with .wtv files because WMF doesn't support them.
So the question is: If Windows Media Centre is no longer viable for Microsoft why haven't they atleast provided the tools for developers to support the format/container they forced upon so many users of their product.
i.e. Metadata reader/writer
Codec/Container? player?
I need a replacement for Windows Media Centre: What is/are the alternative(s)?

I really like the Plex Store App byt they can't play Recoreded TV Files without transcoding them.

  • I can't syn my 2nd gen nano work with Windows XP Media Centre Edition (SP2)

I recently got a new computer with Windows XP Media Centre Edition (SP2) and a 2nd gen Nano. I have the latest version of itunes but when I plug in the Nano it won't sync.
The Nano is nowhere to be seen in itunes and shows in My Computer with an exclamation mark over it. The only thing it will do is charge.
The Nano syncs on my sisters computer which has Windows XP (SP1) and other devices work on the USB ports on my computer.
Does anyone have a clue what is wrong or what I can do.
I've had the Nano for nearly four months now and it's driving me mad!!!

    Problem solved:
I used driver guide to download usbstor.sys and usbstor.inf then placed these files in my i386 folder. Then when I restarted my PC and connected my iPod I selected the i386 folder as the location to search for drivers. After that it recognised my iPod as a storage device and installed it.

  • Windows Media Centre on 8.1 - Please Help

I am an IT professional... I've spent the last 30 minutes going round in an endless loop of pathetic instructions that lead me nowhere. I'm trying to install Windows Media Centre on Windows 8.1 Pro.
    I firstly found this page:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs
    Following the instructions
    "Enter add
features in the search box, and then tap or click Settings."
Either takes me back to the same webpage in the URL above or to the legacy "Add/Remove" Windows features, neither of which is helpful.
So I looked up another page:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/get-started-with-windows-media-center
    Enter Windows
Media Center in the search box, and then tap or click Windows
    Media Center.
The only result for this as it isn't installed, is a web page. Which surprise, takes me around in another loop eventually back to the same web page after clicking eventually on
the link that says "Get it".
I can only assume there is something that is supposed to be appearing about adding features to the OS that actually isn't showing at all.
This entire experience is absolutely unacceptable.
Can someone PLEASE provide for me simple instructions to install this feature that actually work or resemble in the slightest what I am seeing on the actual operating system.

Try the procedure at http://www.ghacks.net/2013/09/18/install-media-center-pack-windows-8-1/ - just hit the Windows key and type features when the Start screen
    appears.
There is no box to type in, just type the word.

  • Boot Camp and Windows Media Centre Edition?

Just curious ... has anyone tried installing Windows Media Centre Edition with Boot Camp on their MacBook Pro? If so, how did it work out? Any issues?

    Look here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2090789??
In general, I'd say the Boot Camp forum is a better place to work on Boot Camp issues than in the model-specific ones.
Also, searching first is always recommended. In most cases, a person coming to these forums with a question or an issue is not the first one. With one exception, of course…

When I import a video I recorded to my laptop from my Iphone 5c  it won't play on window media centre or vec or any medium. Please help??? It plays perfect on the phone.

The format from the phone is :
h.264 encoded video, AAC audio. Both standards of MPEG 4.
You need Windows Media Player version 12 or above to play MP4 (or add the codecs to your current version).

  • I Have an Apple iphone 4.  It will import my photos but when plugged into windows media centre it says connect a device even when the phone is connected.  Why is this?

I have an Apple iphone 4.   It will import my photos but when I am in Windows Media Centre and want to sync music   it asks me to Connect a Device when my phone is already connected.    I have been able to do this in the past but for some reason this fault has just begun   Do you know the reason for this?

Are you certain that it is locked to Orange?
Regardless, Apple does not lock devices, carriers do.
If the carrier refuses to unlock the device there is nothing that can be done.

I already tried accessing Contact Us but it wanted the date I bought my player, etc., and I've had it for years and don't feel like spending time looking for the receipt, etc. I just want to add some new CDs to my music library and then my X-Fi. Thanks.

  • Windows Media Player keeping Automatic Maintenance window/Windows Updates from doing auto-restart

I have a system that is connected to a domain, and it runs a video playlist in Windows Media Player for digital signage upon bootup (and auto-login).  WMP is set to loop the videos over and over again, but it also is preventing automatic updates from
installing and/or auto-restarting at 3:00AM in the morning (and yes, the system power management is set to keep the computer on all the time).
    How can I fix this?
I have a GPO set up to install updates and restart automatically (option 4).  I tried the GPO option to use the Windows 8 maintenance window to install updates, and also tried turning that option off and just using a 3:00AM restart period.  Neither
option seems to work, so it looks like Windows Media Player is preventing an auto-restart to finish the update installation.  Is there any way around this, so that Windows Media Player doesn't stop Windows Updates from doing its job?  I don't care
if that means the video stops playing because it just starts up again on the next bootup.
I looked at the WMP GPO's and the only option that sounds like it's related is the option to turn on or off the auto-updating of media info for WMP, but it has nothing to do with what I'm trying to accomplish.  If I missed something, let me know.
If there is some other way to accomplish this, such as associating and launching the playlist file with the Xbox Videos app, I would be fine with that, but I need it to loop the playlist continually (I also use the Shuffle option
in WMP - ***see note below for another question).  I still want the system to automatically install updates and reboot on a regular schedule despite the video playing in the foreground.
***Side question: is there any way to turn Repeat and Shuffle options on in WMP without having to load the GUI (for scripting a playlist)?
Just FYI: this system is actually using Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise (from a MAPS account), but it isn't customized aside from not having the standard WinRT apps from a stock Win 8.1 install loaded - it is a stock install from the ISO.
From what I understand, it is the same as Windows 8.1 Enterprise, except that it is only licensed to be used as an "appliance" machine for a single role - which it is.  So I'm assuming that there are no actual differences from a "regular"
Windows 8.1 SKU that would cause this issue.  If I am completely mistaken about this, please notify me on it.  The reason I'm making this statement is in case there are any differences in Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise that I am not aware of.
Otherwise, I welcome any assistance that would target a "regular" version of 8.1 Enterprise.  NOTE:  Someone said to post this into the Windows Embedded forum, but the only one that exists is the one for POSready - and this is HARDLY the
POSready version of Windows Embedded that I'm using.

    Hi,
Did you use the policy Local Computer Policy\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Always automatically restart at the scheduled time?
I noticed an description "restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations" policy is enabled, then this policy has no effect." it means if system installed some updates which unneeds restart computer, this policy would has no effect.
In my opinion, your problem should not caused by WMP setting. please check your installed updates whether they need restart computer.
In addition, Power Managment in Control Panel also can prevent the schedule task running.
    Control Panel\System and Security\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings\Change advanced power settings\Sleep\Allow wake timers
Please make sure this option is enable.

  • Does Windows 8 require a media pack to play a DVD? or is it built in and should play without one?

Please help me to be able to play a simple DVD?

    Hi David,
Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro don't come with DVD movie playback capability. If you're running Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Pro, you can search for a DVD player app in the Windows Store. If you have Windows 8.1 Pro, you can also buy the Windows 8.1 Media
Center Pack that includes DVD playback.

  • Re-Installing Windows 7 Using Recovery Media (DVD's)

    Notebook: HP-430 Notebook
    OS: Windows 7 (64-bit)
    HDD: 298 GB
When i newly bought my HP-430 notebook, I re-partitioned HDD using some other third party software.I created one additional partition (M:\). Here is the info, of how i had repartitioned....
    C:\  - 100GB (changed from 284 GB to 100 GB).
D:\  - Did not make any changes.
M:\  - 184 GB (Created a drive by my self).
Then after some days for testing purpose i thought of using recovery manager. So i run the setup and chose the First option (System Restore) which said that it will only reformat the system drive (C:\), and will not perform any other HDD changes. But to my surprise it deleted/reformated the full HDD, and i lost all my documents, music, photos, and all my important files, which i had stored/backed up on M:\ (which i had created)....
Can some one tell me why the hack this happened.....????
Then now, next point. After recovery manager had restored the OS, i again repartitioned it, But this time with Windows Disk Management Tool. But Windows Disk Management didnt allow me to shrink(resize) the C:\(Systemdrive) less than 150 GB. So i resized C:\ to 150 GB from 284 GB, and created one more drive (M:\) of size 147 GB. And i deleted the Recovery Drive (D:\), but i have created the Recovery DVD's before deleting Recoevery Drive from my HDD.
Again now its time for me to reinstall Windows 7 using Recovery media, as i have messed up with some system files while installing a theme for Windows 7, and now my OS is completely unstable. So now i want to reinstall windows 7, but I cant understand which option to chose in recovery manager (when run from Recovery DVD's)
    Options shown in recovery manager
    1. Recover using Microsoft Recovery
    2. System Recovery (The option which i had chosen for the first time and got all my stuff deleted)....it says it only reinstalls the OS and wont perform any other HDD changes.
    3. Minimised Image Recovery
    4.Factory Reset.
So now my question to you guys is that.......which option do i chose in recovery manager so that all my backed up content and my stuff on M:\ (which i created) wont be deleted..and the OS will be reinstalled.....

    Hi,
I don't believe that any of the recovery options from the Disc will retain your custom partition - As far as I know, the only time you will get a prompt to keep a custom partition is when using the 'Minimized Image Recovery' option from the Recovery Partition D which you have removed.
You could try the following work-around.
Download the correct Windows 7 Disc Image from the link below - this must be exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the version you would need to download.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.
Use the disc you create to perform the installation - when you get to the option to choose the type of installation, choose Custom and select the C partition.
When asked, enter the Windows activation key found on the underside of your notebook, then when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

  • Windows 8 and OEM media with updates and software

Recently i had an idea to create a custom Windows 7, 8 OEM image that includes all the Windows updates and also has couple of softwares inside it (adobe reader, java, flash etc). I used MDT to do this. I came to this idea because every time i prepared
a computer for my customers it took a really long time with all the updates and software i had to install. When i started imaging Windows 8 i stumbled upon a little problem. As everybody knows Windows 8 OEM keys are no longer located on the stickers that are
on the computers. As i have understood it they are basically located somewhere in the BIOS. So, finally to my question :) .  Is it somehow possible to retrieve the OEM key from the BIOS so that i could use my custom OEM image ? Right now i can't activate
my Windows 8 OEM's because there are no way for the operating system to access the key that is in the BIOS.

    Hi,
The OEM license allows the organization to use that pre-installed image on that OEM PC only. If the PC fails in the future and the image needs to be restored, the organization needs to use the original recovery media provided by the OEM to re-install the
    image.
I suggest you consult with  the manufacturer for more information.
