Windows Media Player 12 under Win 7 Pro 64 nolonger able to play DVD

Hello TechNet
"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card.  Try installing an updated driver for your video card."
It seems that I have recently joined the chorus of MS users who have a Media Player DRM issue, where DVD's that would work perfectly well in WMP12 and MCE are nolonger being recognised. The error message above is displayed now, every time a commercial DVD
movie is inserted into the DVD drive where WIN 7 Pro 64 autoplay is used to open WMP12, The instruction to update video drivers is also not the solution.
Considering that I have until recently, been able to play DVD with my current NVIDIA driver 314.22Whql (now updated to 332.21Whql) and my DVD drive remains exactly as before, the Codec's installed with Win7 Pro 64 WMP 12 are unchanged and were working
fine. I do not know now what has caused the removal of DRM or the suggestion that my MPEG2 codecs can nolonger allow access to  commercial DVD content.
I have tried all the suggestions raised about this issue from other MS users and MPV's in the forum, I have renamed the DRM folder and reset Windows Media DRM as directed. I have checked for a suitable MPEG2 codec/decoder on my system of which I have
several choices, including the one installed with Win 7 Pro 64 / WMP 12.
I have checked to see if I have a region issue with my DVD drive, and can confirm that the DVD drive will play DVD content when Playing DVD with "NERO 9 Showtime", this proves to me that the codec/DVD decoder is working in
my system, I then try Win 7s MCE (Media Center) and WMP12, the result is a black unresponsive screen in MCE, and the error message noted above in WMP with a black screen in the player.
I would like to know if MS are working on a rectification for the issue, as none of the proposed solutions deliver any functionality back to MS default DVD players. Is there an update in the works to provide a definitive solution for WMP12 and MCE DVD functionality.
Could you provide any new ideas, other than those already proposed to regain DVD function under MS default DVD programs.
Cheers Jeff

Hi Sengupta,
Yes I have already tried - Reset DRM using the method described in a post by another MS MPV here in the forum.
This is the method I used :
1. First open My Computer go to Tools>FolderOptions>View> uncheck >Hide Protected Operating System Files >
so that I can see the DRM folder and its contents.
2. Go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM  >Delete the contents of the DRM folder, these hidden files and the Cache folder with its contents. (Cache,
blackbox.bin, drmstore.hds, IndivBox.key,
IndivBox_64.key, v2ksndv.bla, v3ks.bla,
v3ks.sec) DRM folder empty ready for DRM Reset via web link.
3. Go to start menu Find InternetExplorer > right Click icon select > Run as Administrator > Blank Web page opens > I then paste the link provided (http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp)
into the Url space > click Enter > a web page for Windows Media Technologies (Security Component Upgrade) opens.
4. I then click on the 'Upgrade Button' and wait for it to search for upgrade components (Progress Status: Upgrading security components.... ), A download dialog then appears asking me to proceed. I then click 'Upgrade' and wait for it to
finish downloading & installation
(Progress Bar). . The install then completes saying the upgrade was successful I then click 'Done' close Browser and restart Computer.
5. I then recheck inside the DRM folder that I had erased - the new downloaded files and Cache Folder with contents are all back inside the folder, as expected.
6. Upon restart I place a DVD that I know was working before into the DVD drive and wait, the DVD autostarts WMP12 with the onscreen DVD Disk navigation menu appearing. I then click 'Play' with in the menu option, to begin the
Movie.
7. The resulting error reappears when clicking Play
"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder,
and video card.  Try installing an updated driver for your video card."
I will try once more to Reset the DRM using the Tool you have linked to, and follow your instruction exactly. Will see how it goes!  ............stay tuned
It would be much appreciated If you could research  which MS update has broken DRM, the recent updates which I can think of right now would be :
nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275
now replaced by Nvidia v332.21Whql Drivers.
Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems
Possibly,
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 64bit ( which I have had to remove, rolling back to IE10 to allow use in another Forum without errors and glitches). something about IE11 Browser is not right, maybe a security component from IE11
has interfered with DRM (Just guessing though)
But I think it is more than likely a security update that was downloaded and installed at the same time as these other major Microsoft Update offerings.

  • Windows media player crash dumps when i try to play songs or use most functions i.e. drag and drop,

I've been trying to download music from Amazon to my MP3 player.  It successfully downloads to my computer, but when I try to do anything in Windows Media Player, I get the crash dump screen.  I have, somehow, been able to download some music to the player, but now almost every time the Windows Media Player crashes.  Help!

Did you copy the songs directly from a CD or did you download the files from a website?
You can use a different player than the Windows Media Player to play the songs if you copied them from a CD to avoid that.

  • Windows media player embedded(?) in website won't play

Hello! For some reason, the audio files on some forums won't play. For example, the audio file in first post here shows the controls for windows media player, but nothing works except for the volume slider:

I looked over the list of installed plugins and everything seems to be in order. Can you help?

Works just fine for me and I don't even have Windows Media Player for Mac on my computer or Flip4Mac WMV Player - but if you don't have that you might want to try it out. Flip4Mac WMV Player - with just playback functionality is completely free and is now being distributed by Microsoft to Mac users since it pulled the plug on future development of Windows Media Player.
You might want to make sure you have proper codecs installed.
Try AC3 Codec for Mac OS X (can Google it) for sound
for video you can use Divx 6 for Mac OS X - make sure you have QuickTime properly installed.
make sure before and after you make a major installation that you run Disk Utility to ensure your hard drive continues to work okay.
Flip4Mac WMV Player lets you playback Windows Media files using Apple's QuickTime plugin.
What browser are you using? and what version? Is it Safari? Firefox? Internet Explorer?, Opera etc?
Also make sure iTunes is running correctly on your Mac - by default it is used most often to handle mp3 files. Hope this helps!

  • I downloaded and installed Windows Media Player for Firefox, why can I not play games?

I have done everything Firefox has told me, in order to play games. I cannot play games on msn, pogo, etc. The game loads, the screen changes and nothing happens. The screen stays blank.

Firefox can find plugins in several locations, and in most cases the paths are listed in the Windows registry. Firefox 21 changed the location of a "shared" plugin folder so those installers that do not include the path in the registry may strand the plugin in the obsolete location. The solution is in this article: [[Windows Media or other plugins stopped working after Firefox update]].

  • How to play music from iPod through Windows Media Player

I don't want to insult anyone's intelligence .... but just in case anyone hasn't yet figured it out, here's how to play music from your iPod on a computer that does not have iTunes installed:
On your computer, connect the iPod to iTunes and click on it's name. Then under the general tab, check "allow disk use". Your iPod will then act as a USB hard drive and will then show up as a drive in My Computer. Now all you need to do is to create a Music folder on it and then copy all your music to it!
Your iPod's USB hard drive should show up under My Computer on most Windows computers. Therefore providing the computer has Windows Media Player installed, you will be able to play all your music on it! This saves you having to bother with portable/travel speakers, some of which sound terrible anyway!

  • How do I save then play a slideshow to windows media player?

I have a slideshow created in iphoto that I would like to play on a PC in Windows Media Player. I tried to save it in Quicktime, but it wouldn't play on my PC at work. Any suggestions?

If you have Quicktime Pro you can open the movie in Quicktime Player 7 and export it to a wmv format that will play in the Windows Media Player.
You might be able to convert it with Quicktime Player 7 without the pro option.  You'll have to test it and see.  There are other conversion applications that will do the trick.  Go to MacUpDate.com and search for :convert movie".

  • How do I download Windows Media Player to my Windows 7 - 32 bit laptop?

As the title suggests, I am having a bit of difficulty going to the Microsoft Website and downloading Windows Media Player - version 11 to my Windows 7 Hewlett Packard laptop - the Pavilion dv4.    Any suggestions?  I do not see WMP in
my list of applications nor is it under the Control Panel in Add/Remove programs.   I cannot therefore run the Demos with Microsoft has on using MS-WORD 2007 which is the version that came installed with my laptop in 2011.
Please give me some step by step instructions for finding if I have WMP at all.  Second, please tell me how I can then download from Microsoft's site.  I really need to learn the ins and outs of Word and I'm used to the prior Word version.
    thanks.

If you purchased the pc in Europe or South Korea, you may have a Win 7 "N" or "KN" version which does not ship with Windows Media Player. Please see

  • Windows Media Player trouble

When I download windows media player it downloads fine and it goes to my desktop, but it is a picture of a blank piece of paper with the top right corner folded. When I try to open it, it opens with script edit and I tried to change it, but no matter what I pick it will not open. What do I have to open windows media player with to download it? Also, I don't know that much about computers so if you could make it simple that would be great.

    Hi, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
WMP isn't supported anymore for Mac OSX, see ..
"On January 12, 2006 Microsoft announced it had ceased development of Windows Media Player for Mac.[4] Microsoft now distributes a third-party plugin called WMV Player (produced and maintained by Flip4Mac) which allows some forms of Windows Media to be played within Apple's QuickTime player and other QuickTime-aware applications.[5] Mac users can also use the free software media player VLC, which is also able to play WMV-3 / WMV-9 / VC-1 Windows Media files"
    Use Flip4Mac and VLC instead .. http://www.flip4mac.com/ and http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

  • Windows Media Player DRM prevents me watching football on my iMac - HELP!!

    Hi there -
I'm having some real problems trying to watch my beloved Scottish Football games live (or recorded) on my iMac.
I'm a new mac user. Used to be a pc owner (my appologies there) and watched all my games with no problem. Games are shown either live or recorded via Windows Media Player.
I downloaded Windows Media Player for Mac (and something called Stffit Expander), but to no avail.
Problem I seem to have is that the Digital Rights Management (DRM) for Windows Media Player is preventing me from watching the games on a Mac - seems that WMP does not support Safari, although Firefox does not work either, so I guess it is the Operating System? I have been told by a work colleague that basically I'm stuffed unless I put a Windows Operating System on the iMac, which I would really like to avoid doing at this point.
Can anyone out there help me with this at all? Am I destined to miss out on the games because I am now a Mac user? Seems a tad unfair that! If it helps, the websites I watch the games at are www.heartsfc.co.uk and www.internetfootball.co.uk
I'm at my wits end here, but I guess it's my own fault for not checking into this before I bought the iMac.
Anyway, I'd appreciate ideas/comments/recommendations etc, just keep in mind that I am no whizz on the Technical side of things.
Any Scots in Canada with Macs who have the same problem?
    Thanks for your time all!
    Angus

    Hi, Angus.
    Unfortunately, you're out of luck:
    • Windows Media Player 9 for Mac (WMP9) does not play Windows Media files protected with anything later than version 1.3 of Microsoft's DRM. This is documented here on Microsoft's Web site, under the heading "Support for Digital Rights Management." If the files in question use a version of Microsoft's DRM later than 1.3, they will not play in WMP9 on a Mac.
    • Flip4Mac, the replacement for WMP9, does not support any WIndows Media files encoded with Microsoft's DRM on Mac OS X. It states on this page that "Note: Flip4Mac does not support content that is protected with Windows Media digital rights management (DRM). "See also this Flip4Mac Knowledge Base article.
You need to check with the firm from which you view/download the files to determine the version of Windows DRM they employ. Information concerning available versions of Windows DRM can be found here.
Note that this is not a Mac problem: it is due to Microsoft refusing to make its DRM available on the Mac, i.e. a Microsoft business decision intended to keep you locked-in to the Windows platform.
If your iMac is one of the new Intel-based iMacs, then you have two options for running Windows XP on your iMac, which would then permit you to view the videos in Windows:
    • Apple's Boot Camp Public Beta;
    • Parallels Desktop for Mac
along with with a copy of Windows XP.
The key difference between these is that Boot Camp requires you startup in either WIndows or Mac OS X: you can only run one OS at a time. Parallels Desktop lets you run Mac OS X and Windows simultaneously.
Both approaches have straightforward installation instructions. If I were in your position, I'd opt for Parallels Desktop given the ability to with with both operating systems simultaneously.
    Good luck!

  • Windows Media Player/streaming app

Does anyone know if there is an app for streaming audio that needs either Windows Media Player or Winamp to be able to listen to it? I can listen to my on-air and streaming radio station (www.1077wacc.org -- in case you want to test it out) using my AT&T Tilt, however, I have yet to find an app to receive the audio using the iPhone. Many thanks!

    Hi Veshman,
I'm the developer of an iPhone app that now has close to 10,000 streams in it's built in DB. My app can play WMA radio streams, as well as mp3, and aac+ (typically used for winamp streams). You can see the list of current stations here: http://ootunes.com/stations/ and your stream may already be added. If it isn't just send a message from the site and I can add it for you. Hope that helps,

  • Windows media player stop working after upgraded from firefox 6.02 to Firefox 7.01 yesterday.

windows media player stop working after upgraded from Firefox 6.02 to Firefox 7.01 yesterday.
the plugin for win media player is already installed and working fine in FF 6.02 before upgrade. i have Google this issue without any result so far. so i reinstalled the old version 6.02, until fix is found.
anyone has the similar issue with Firefox 7.01 in Win 7 32 bit ?

The issue was not with FF 7.01. VLC player version 1.11.1 is conflicting with windows media player when FF 7.01 tries to play media files! Which was not happening before in FF 6.02.
VLC and plugin media player need to be uninstalled first, then uninstalled FF 6.02. Install FF 7.01 and then win plugin media player again.
