Windows media player 9 for MAC OS X PROBLEMS!

I have just installed windows media player 9 for MAC OS X (from this site http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/mac/mp9/default.aspx), in an attempt to view a windows media file sent to me via email.
Since the install, I can no longer view any media on the BBC website (not sure what application they use on this).
I have dragged all Windows Media Player 9 related files to the trash, emptied the trash and then done a restart of my computer. still no joy.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

WMP for Mac is outdated and no longer developed by Microsoft. Use the free Flip4Mac WM Quicktime plugin available at flip4mac.com Also, please note this forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to WMP. If you have further questions regarding WMP please post them on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products: http://www.officeformac.com/productforums Questions regarding Flip4Mac should be posted on their forums: http://forum.flip4mac.com/forum/

  • Any problems with Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X?

I want to be able to play video from CNN.com, but it says I need Windows Media Player 9. Before I download it, I want to know if it is reliable.
    I've already got Flip4Mac, and that doesn't help. (I get a -2048 error.)
Please share experiences with Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X so I can decide whether or not to download it.
    Thanks,

The default application you're looking for is "Stuffit Expander".
http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/ is the page you'll be looking for...think Winzip for Mac. Once stuffit is installed you should be able to open the .sitx or .hqx file you may have downloaded...essentially a package that stuffit can open for you so you can install media player.

  • Windows Media Player 9 for Mac (OS X)

I've been trying to download the software for Windows Media Player 9 for Mac (OS X) in two versions: 1 - Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X, 2 - Windows Media® Components for QuickTime. Every time I download the files I get this message: Unable to expand "Windows Media 4.stix"- Stuffit archives are not supported.
Any ideas on what my problem is, simply I need a program which will show Windows Media files.

  • Windows Media Player 9 for Mac

Hello, I am trying to download this and every time I try to open the installer, Quicktime opens and says "Error, movie cannot be opened." Please help!

Forget about WMP. It's outdated, not Intel native and has been discontinued.
Download the free Flip4Mac plugin from flip4mac.com if you want to view/play WM 9 files.

  • Windows Media Player 9 on Mac OS X 10.5.8

I'm trying to download Windows Media Player 9 for my Mac.
I know it's lame. I don't really want it, but need it to run a Windows-based application.
I'm using Wine to open the Photostory 2 (windows) application, but it won't let me finish installing it without first installing WMP 9.
    Here's the catch(es):
    1) I tried to install the Windows version of WMP 10 (during a failed attempt to install Photostory 3), so I can't install the Windows 9 version because it recognizes its inferiority and refuses to install. Does anyone perhaps know how to track down the WMP 10 file to delete? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
    2) When I try to install the Mac version of WMP 9, I can get as far as expanding the .bin file (.bin because it's rubbish and belongs in the bin?), but when I try to open the Windows Media Installer, it refuses to open. Does anyone know how I can fix it?
Thanks! I hope someone has an answer for me. I have to do a project for my PC-prejudiced professor by Monday (just found out today a PC is required...).

If you want to run Windows applications, you need to have Windows installed.
As for Windows Media Player, try Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft).

  • Can I use Windows Media Player with my Mac?

I am scheduled to have an interview via WEBEX and need to make sure that all the components of the Universal Communications Format are up and running.  When I did a diagnosis check on my MacBook Pro, the Windows Media Player 9.0 or newer said I needed a plug in to run.  Where can I find this plug in?
       Thank you!!
       Michelle Schaal

    Michelle,
You can download media components for QuickTime which will enable you to play WMA files through QuickTime on your Mac:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-media-components-quicktime
Alternatively, Get the free VLC player for Mac, which will play almost all media types:
    http://vlc-media-player.en.softonic.com/mac
If the interview requires Windows Media Player to be running to conduct the interview, then I fear you may be stuck, there is not a version of Windows Media Player for Mac - It is for Windows.  Your options in this case would be to borrow a Windows PC or install a valid copy of Windows on your MacBook under BootCamp.

  • Need Windows Media Player Plugin for Windows 8

When I go thru the directions to install the plugin it only shows up to Windows 7. I have Windows 8. The media player works fine thru Internet Explorer, but I'd rather use Firefox.
Problem - I have an important viewing of my daughter's 3d/4d ultrasound this Saturday and I don't want to mess up my laptop by installing the wrong version and not being able to view it at all.
    Thanks.

Those instructions should work for Windows 8 as well.
Did you try to install the plugin, assuming that you've already installed the WMP?

  • Is there Any Blu-Ray Media player out for Mac?

    hello everyone,
I just recently installed Pioneer BDC-202 Optical drive, which I ordered from OWC. It does come with a installation Disc, but not for Mac. I mean everything works, but I can't seem to get the Blu-ray Movies to work? Why is that? Is it because of the non supporting media player? I mean I can't seem to find it anywhere on the web. Is it because its not available yet? If not when are they making it available? I mean it would suck to spend 200 dollars on an internal Blu-ray disc player in hoping to watch some high quality movies. I think OWC should not have it available for sale on a Mac site when it doesn't have any supporting programs out there to make the darn thing work.

It's not clear if the nvidia 8800GT is HDCP. See: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7442757 .
My monitor (a Gateway XHD3000 30" display) is HDCP compliant, so I was wondering myself if the nvidia card is. Fortunately, not too big a deal for me, since I don't plan on watching protected movies in my sytem (I have a 52" LCD and 100" projection).

  • Windows Media Player Plugin for Safari

How Do I Download It? THANKS

    Welcome to the discussions!
Microsoft has stopped development of WMP for Mac and now offers the Flip4Mac plugin HERE instead. It is not a universal binary yet and you will have to run the installed under Rosetta in order to get it to work.
The details of that are located in THIS thread.

  • What is the 3rd party player that will open a windows media player on the MAC

What 3rd party player provides the ability to open .wmv file on a Mac? We have QuickTime Player but it does not recognize the file.

Thanks for responding Barney-15E. I did install the free version of Flip4Mac prior to sending my question out to the community. I still could not open the file. After I installed Flip4Mac a window opened stating QuickTime Player does not recognize the file. How do you make it go through Flip4Mac instead of QuickTime Player?

  • Windows Media Player for Macs Problem

Hi. I realize this is not a direct iMovie question however I (along with alot of other iMovie users) have to occasionaly deal with WMV files by converting them to a format to be imported by iMovie.....therefore I thought some other iMovie users may have encountered this problem. I recently got an iMac G5(0S10.4) and have been transfering some info from my old Mac(iMac G3(OS10.2.8)) to the New Mac. With the new Mac....every time I try to open a wmv file with the Windows Media Player 9 for Macs...I get a message...."This file may not play correctly because it was compressed by using a codec that is not supported".The file will open..the video will play...but theres no audio. The same message appears for wmv files transfered from the old mac, taken from a CD, or downloaded from the net. However these same files will play on the old Mac with audio using the same WMPlayer. I tried re-installing the WMPlayer...but did not make any difference. The strange thing is....a few days ago when I first tried this ....the wmv files would open and play with audio on the new Mac however now the message comes up with all wmv files preventing me from converting them with audio to a format for iMovie. Is the problem with the new Mac, the WMPlayer or the wmv files. Any suggestions to remedy this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi. Strange things still happening. This afternoon when I tried opening the wmv files with Quicktime "flip4mac" all the wmv files were "greyed out" in the "open" window preventing me from opening them. I just tried opening one with the WMPlayer and viewing the "Show movie Info".....it reads...WMVideo-9.0, WMAudio-9.1.....which makes me wonder if the WMPlayer 9.0 will play WMAudio-9.1 but then again the same player plays it on the old mac. Then......just to double-check...tried opening one again with the Quicktime Flip 4 Mac. This time the wmv file opened and played with audio. I'm wondering if the problem the 1st time was that a "restart" was needed after installing the flip4mac software the 1st time (even though I dont recall the installer telling me that). The "Show movie info" this time reads...WMVideo-9 standard and the WMAudio-9 standard. I would prefer if the WMPlayer could open the files (as its a bit more convienent to just double-click and open files then go to Quicktime/menu/file/openfile/wmvfile/open) however I'm glad that I have the option now to use the Flip4mac player.Thanks. P.S.-(Dawn.....if your logged in...the "post new topic" link appears in its usual place for me at the top of the discussions page)

  • Problems with Windows Media Player for OSX and IMAC G5 Intel Duo

I was able to download Windows Media Player 9 for Mac but when I surf on the net and I click on the WMP files, instead of opening automatically, it downloads the content and only then lets me open it.
Also, with live streaming, when I click for the window to open it will say that: "Some content on this page requires an Internet plug-in that Safari doesn’t support. The application “Windows Media Player” may be able to display this content. Would you like to try?".
Except that I already downladed WMP... It worked fine with the PowerPc G5 so it must be the Intel chip. Please help.

Microsoft has abandoned WMP for the Mac and has ceased development. You may wish to consider and alternative!
WMP 9 for Mac is not a Universal binary, so it does not run natively on Intel iMacs. It runs using Rosetta. If the WMP plugin is installed in HD/Library/Internet Plugins/ for it to run usable by Safari you must be using Safari with Rosetta.
    I have two versions of Safari, Safari - Uni & Safari - Rose, Uni runs natively and Rose uses Rosetta. To make a Rose version;
    1. Right-click Safari and choose Duplicate
    2. Rename the copy whatever you like to tell it from the other; ex: Safari - Rose
    3. Right-click Safari - Rose and choose Get Info
    4. In the top pane of the Info window check the box Run using Rosetta.
You need to use Safari -Rose for websites with WMP multimedia material to get it to play in the browser.
    There are also WMP replacements that you can use with Safari such as Flip4Mac and others. Here is a Discussion that covers many of the alternatives;
