Windows media player - can't open it, can't trash it

I recently upgraded from 10.3 to 10.4 then to 10.4.11. Everything was good.
I've installed all the updates etc. No problems.
The only problem (oh surprise, surprise) is that I cannot open windows media player and when I try to trash its folder it is says repeatedly that components this and that can't be trashed becuse they are 'fixed'.(I think)
I have flip4mac installed and other apps for playing video and audio. No problems as far as I can see with them.
How do I uninstall media player - forever and ever - please?
Thanks anyone
Gordon

Hi Gordon!
This is probably the error message you are seeing.
"The operation could not be completed because the item 'item_name' is locked."
If you press the Option key, as you select Empty Trash, it should empty immediately.

  • My iphone is not recognised on either my computer (windows 7) or in the latest itunes that i downloaded. It was recognised for a short time but windows media player asked to open my pictures and i clicked ok. I also started downloading the newest software

My iphone 3gs is not recognised in either windows 7 or in the latest itunes. It was briefly but then Windows asked me if I wanted to open the camera with Windows media player and I clicked ok. I also tried to download the new software for the phone. Now nothing works. I also downloaded a programme which you supposedly need for iphone with windows 7
    Any help please

The ONLY program you need for an iPhone on Windows 7 is iTunes. Remove whatever the other program is, then remove and re-install iTunes as diesel vdub recommends.

  • Windows media player fails to open

I click the video link and the WMP icon opens in the doc but the player doesn't open.
    I went to:
    Home/Library/Preferences/
But these files aren't there to delete:
    com.microsoft.mediaplayer.plist
    Windows Media Favorites
    Windows Media Player Prefs

Or you could just get the free Windows Media Components for QuickTime:

  • Windows media player crashes on opening

    Hi
I installed WMP in Snow leopard and ran a wmv file and it ran fine.Again when I reboot, the windows media player quits unexpectedly in my snow leopard. I have tried installing it 3-4 times and every time the same thing happens. This is the message in the report.
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x00000000696e674a
Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
Seems like the wmv file corrupts the player.
    Pls help.Thanks.

why are you using windows media player? it's deprecated and its support and development has been dropped for many years. if you need to run .wmv files install Flip4Mac or Perian plugins for QT player and use that. or use VLC player.

  • Windows Media Player won't open

Hey. WMP just wont open, it crashes on launch...
I can't see why it was doing this, it was fine yesterday...
    Any ideas?
    thanks

Not sure about that James. I tried mine and it worked. To be honest there's a few bugs with WMP and it's sort of a necessary evil. I say sort of because there are alternatives.
You might try downloading the whole thing again and installing it (after trashing the version you have now) or try something I like better which is VLC.
It's a multimedia player that works well and can play a multitude of media files.

  • Windows media player does not open in new window

When I go to a web site that may have several wmv files to view, if I view one, a new tab does not open for wmv. When I am through watching the clip, I close windows media, but it does not return me to the original web site, I just have a white screen and I have to go back and reload the page again to view another clip.

    Hi Paul,
I face the same problem, any findings so far?
    Thanks!

  • Windows Media Player Won't Open for Some Streaming Audio

I run almost every day, and while my friends think my iPod is playing music, the truth is that I stream and record NPR programming for playback during the runs. I'm hooked, but suddenly when I go to the NPR web pages and click on the "listen" link, nothing happens, or I'm told that I don't have a player installed (I have both WMP and Real Player) installed.
Any idea why this might be happening? I can play audio from other web sites, but I'm just guessing that the problem isn't on the NPR side, but rather on my side. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Ditch WMP and try the free Flip4Mac WM QuickTime plugin from flip4mac.com

  • Can't use Windows Media Player or get WMV (Flip4Mac) to work on Snow Leopar

After I upgraded to Snow Leopard, a friend told me I could download Windows Media Player for free to view some mpeg files required for a class I'm taking. I googled Windows Media Player Mac Snow Leopard and downloaded the newest version, and nothing. The window opened to a garbled mess. I posted a question about this on this forum previously and was told to use Flip4Mac instead. I've tried to use Flip4Mac at least 20 times and nothing ever happens. Before Snow Leopard, I would download it and it would just not work at all. After Snow Leopard I down loaded it again and now it's telling me I must have Quick Time installed. I DO HAVE QUICK TIME INSTALLED! I have the icon for QT and it opens (toolbar at top, etc) when I click on it. But WMV(Flip4Mac) is not recognizing it. Can't they just fix the Windows Media Player or SOMETHING so I can do my classwork without having to run to someone else's computer? Does anyone know what I should do?

This may what you've already tried, but there's a beta version of Flip4Mac available:

  • How can I copy my iTunes library to windows media player?

Hi, I've spent all morning trying to consolidate all my music into Windows Media Player...so I can make playlists, etc. iTunes seems to be pretty tough....I've moved the library file around....copied, etc. and I can't seen to paste it into Windows Media Player. My itunes library has about 50 purchased songs, and another 100 from my own CDs.
Does anyone know how to do this? I'm getting really irritable over this!!!
    Thanks in advance!

The iTunes purchased songs will not transfer to Windows Media Player. Unless you have the iTunes Plus versions, iTunes purchased files are copy protected.
There is nothing preventing you from adding the other files to Windows Media Player except for maybe file format. Did you rip the CDs to AAC or MP3 format. Don't know if WMP can play AAC. WMP has no problems with MP3.
To add MP3 files to WMP just add them using WMP functions.

  • I deleted half of my songs from windows media player by mistake and can't play the songs on my I tunes library because the files can't be found.  is there a way to reinstall them back to my library without having to buy them again?

Restore them from the recycle bin if they are there, or your backup, or find an unerase or file recovery tool, or see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if you have one.

  • Windows Media Player or Creative MediaSource with Vision

I just spent a few hours introducing myself to MediaSource. Then I realized I was not getting album art or anything, and read about how WMA files often sound better with smaller file sizes. I cannot decide which media organizer/player?to use, and am hoping for insight from anyone. I really don't want to waste time with one or the other, only to regret it later.

Creative's software is horrendous. It is overly complicated, unintuiti've, and many functions simply do not work. I haven't played with Windows Media Player 0, but I really can't see how it could possibly be worse (or even as bad!) as the Creative offering! Creative really needs to fix the bugs in MediaSource and MediaOrganizer, so that the software is useable on the Vision:M. Maybe if enough people complain about it, they'll start fixing issues! Or, an even better idea, would be for a third party to write a killer app for the Vision:M and cut Creative out of the loop entirely. Creative may be able to manufacture good players, but they can't write software!

  • Windows Media Player for Mac to play .vob vid?

I downloaded a video that had a ".vob" designation. I couldn't play it, and someone told me that you need the latest version of Windows Media Player to play it.
Can someone please direct me to where I can get that player for the Mac? And what does .vob stand for? Thanks.

.VOB files are not Windows specific. They are a container format for DVD video.
Everything you want to know about .VOB files can be found on the Wiki HERE.
You can play them with VLC which is found HERE.
