Windows media player erks me just as much in X as it did 9

I'm a Netflix.com subscriber. I contacted Netflix a few days ago requesting that they offer their movies in QT also, and I gave my reasons (movie industry standard, crisper trailers, just works, etc...). But that's another post and perhaps I should have posted this [post] in the QT forum but it applies here, if not moreso, as well.
Since I have to use Media Player to preview movies at Netflix.com, I went ahead and downloaded it and installed it. Although the previews at netflix look far inferior to QT, I have a further complaint [and I know that I should direct that complaint to MS but in reality I know I can actually get an answer here].
In OS 9, when I previewed movies [media player] would place a file on my desktop each time I did a preview. I hoped that the version for X Tiger wouldn't do the same, but it does [places a file on my desktop each time I preview a movie].
My question is this: Is it possible to use Media Player without it placing these files on my computer [desktop] or is this just the nature of the beast of Media Player. By the way, what are these files, aliases to double click to see them again?
So Media Player is still trashing up my desktop as I try to enjoy Netflix.com. Can I fix this in media player preferences or is this just more MS junk that I'll be forced to trash everytime I use & exit Netflix.
Thanks so much for reading this and any of your replies.

You make an extremely valid point!
I've already emailed Netflix and explained why I think they should use QT (reasons like media player is buggy, has much lower quality than QT trailers, that QT is considered the movie industry standard, the list goes on).
If I had to do over, I would have emailed and told them that I use Mac OS X Tiger and I can't preview because I use Quicktime.
But not is all lost here. Perhaps Netflix has competitors that use Quicktime [does Blockbuster allow trailers/previewing in QT? I dunno]. Regardless, surely there is a Netflix competitor that does and I could email them back and explain why I'm inclined to switch to their competitor because I prefer QT so much for previews.
What do you think?
Good conversation here - thanks.
Addendum note: Netflix did not reply to my email where I requested that they utilize QT [with past issues, they did reply].
Addendum note 2: Just visited Blockbuster.com. No QT there. However, they do offer Realplayer.

  • I can sync media files from Windows Media Player to my ipod, but the information will not show up on my ipod. Why?

I HATE using iTunes (it's a pain in the bleeping arse) so, despite what someone from Apple told me, I tried to sync a song from Windows Media Player onto my ipod. The sync appears to be successful, and yet when I ejected my ipod to check to see if the song was on there, it was not. Why? And how do I get it on there? I want to avoid using iTunes at all costs.

Try MediaMonkey or Winamp. Unlike Windows Media Player which will just blindly throw the files onto the iPod's hard drive these two at least (there may be others) know that they have to update the device's database if you are going to be able to access the content that has been added.

  • Problem with "play to device" on windows media player

Hello, I'm having a problem with the play to device feature of windows media player.  I am trying to use it to play music files to my T.V.  It works fine if i try to play a single file or a small number of files (50 or so), but if I try to play
my entire playlist (346 songs, if it matters)in this way or a large number of random songs, nothing happens.  No error messages or freezes either, it's as if i never clicked play.  I thought this might be a limitation with the t.v. or my network
(im doing this via wi-fi) but when i tried this using windows explorer instead of windows media player it worked just fine, and this was with all the music on my computer which is about 3000 songs.  Therefore, i know this is a problem with windows media
player and not my t.v., network or computer.  This is a problem because i don't want to play all my music, just my playlist.  Short of making a separate folder with duplicate files in it for each and every playlist i want to play in this manner(which
is not only time consuming and tedious but takes up space on my hard drive)  how do i remove this limitation or otherwise get around it?  Thanks!
P.S.  Out of curiosity, why does this limitation exist and what causes it?

when i tried this using windows explorer instead of windows media player it worked just fine, and this was with all the music on my computer which is about 3000 songs.
    Hi,
According to your description, you said that you used windows explorer.Did you share 3000 songs with your TV?
If so,I think this method is different with "play to" feature.
Also,we haven't found any limitation with Windows media player.

  • Windows media player plugin is not working in firefox 4.if any one know what to do pls reply me

MY FRIEND SUGGESTED THIS TO ME
    I HAVE TRIED THIS
    BUT ITS WASTE
I CANT EVEN FIND ANYTHING AS
    WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER
I have had the same problem since I installed Firefox 4.0.
Thank you for letting us know that The RealPlayer plugin conflict, was the source of this problem.
Another way to fix this (for good) is doing the following:
    1) Click on "Tools">Options"
    2) Click on the "Applications" tab
    3) Search in the "Content Type" column, all the applications that start with the words "Windows Media." Click on the content that is listed to the right of each application's name and choose "Use Windows Media Player (default)."
By doing this, Firefox will avoid using the Windows Media Player plugin and will open the corresponding application directly with Windows Media Player.
I just did this and is working perfectly. Try it and let me know how it works for you.

  • Cannot get Windows Media Player off my computer

I downloaded Windows Media Player for something a while back and found that I did not need it, so I put it in the garbage. Trouble is, I cannot get it out of the garbage! I cannot empty my recycle bin without bypassing the WMP. So I tried taking it out of the trash, but it only copied it out of the trash, so I had to trash the copy as well and now have two copies of WMP in my garbage this will not get off my computer.
Recently have been having problems with my computer just shutting off, and now iPhoto doesn't work properly. Do not know if these things are related. Somebody please help?

Hold down the option key when emptying the trash.

  • Windows Media Player plugin has stopped working since I installed Firefox 4. I have the newest version of the plugin, worked fine with the previous version of Firefox. Any ideas?

I have tried the suggestions on the help and troubleshooting pages including uninstalling and reinstalling plugins and Firefox 4. disabling the pop up blocker did not help either.

  • I just ripped over 750 movies and they all play and sound great on Windows media player.  Some work on AppleTV and others have no sound.  The Audio is dolby 5.1 and yes I disabled the Dolby on the AppleTV.  Still no sound.  What up That?

iTunes has no sound for the movies too.  It is obviously an Apple issue since they ALL play just fine on the Windows Media Player.

Encoding you say.  I noticed that all the movies without sound are listed in 'Home Video' section of iTunes.  The process used to digitize the movies was identical for all the movies.  Is there a way to identify the encoding problem?  I have redone a movie several times, setting the audio to different levels.  When I set it to Stereo the sound came through, but choppy.

  • My CD track titles no longer show up on Windows Media Player; just Track 1, Track 2, etc. Is there a setting to correct this?

No matter which CD I play on my computer (using Windows Media Player), the title shows "Unknown Album", and each track is listed a s Track 1, 2, etc. instead of showing the song title. When I click on "Find album info", a message pops up saying "You must change your privacy settings in Tools, Options, to update information about the audio media you have selected". I don't see anything in the Privacy tab that has to do with audio media. All of this began when I changed to Firefox. I'm using Version 3.6.12

The Tools|Options it is talking about are those listed in WMP not FF.

  • I just purchased Premiere 13 and the video files won't play in Windows Media Player. I have audio but no video. What can I do? I have Premiere 12 and everything works fine with it.

    What can I do?

    Bonan
Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 8.1 64 bit
What are your export settings for this finished video from Premiere Elements 13?
For example - are you using
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    AVChD
    with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p30
    or something different like
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    MPEG
    with Presets = MPEG2 1920 x 1080i30
    or something different ....
We are going to have to get at your export settings which gets us to the properties of the finished video that you are trying to play in Windows Media Player.
If you take your finished video from Premiere Elements 13 and import that into a new Premiere Elements 13 project with Add Media/Files and Folders,
does it import into the new project. And, when the video is in the new project, does it display video and have audio in the Edit area monitor?
We need more details of the properties of the finished video. Knowing that you have no problems with this matter in Premiere Elements 12 and that
the finished video plays in CyberLink are important, but they do not help to figure out what is happening in 13 so that it does not happen again.

  • Windows media player plugin loads up, then just says "ready" and never plays the file. what do i do?

Whenever I use the internal WM plug-in, it loads up, then the status in the player reads "Ready" and never downloads/plays the file.

    Hi Lindsay.
The [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_Media_Player MozillaZine "Windows Media Player" KB doc] explains installation and troubleshooting in-depth including a link to test the plugin, which should help you solve this problem.
Do note - if your Windows 7 OS is a 64-bit version, make sure that the plugin actually ends up in the Mozilla Firefox plugin folder (default '''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\'''). There are reports of the plugin (or actually Firefox) ending up in the wrong folder. 64-bit Windows systems has 2 Program Folder locations - "Program Files" for 64-bit applications, and "Program Files (x86)" for 32-bit applications.
Also note that the Windows Media Player is required to use the plugin - if WMP has been uninstalled from the Windows Control Panel, the plugin will not work.
Please let us know how above works out, and if we can be of further assistance. Detailed feedback is appreciated and helps us to help you better, plus enables us to better help more users with similar problems.

  • Bug & Conflict w/ Palm Destop 6 & Windows Media Player

I am a long time Palm user but my T2 was not getting much use considering I was already carrying Two cell phones. But I was excited to get an upgrade to a Centro for one of my phones. Now I am dealing with the differences between PalmDesktop4 (PD4) and PD6 on Windows XP SP3.
I found what appears to be a critical bug in the installation of PD6 in that it has some very undesirable interactions with Windows Media Player (WMP) 10 & 11. Let me preface by saying that I am not using WMP or PocketTunes for any syncing or transferring any media to my Centro. My Centro is only used for calendar, contacts, calculators, and Docs2Go.
I have installed PD6 and the PD6 user data to a removable drive for personal privacy on a work computer. The error is that when ever the drive is not mounted and wmplayer.exe is started, Windows searches for the Palm Access Installation package on my removable drive and attempts to start a installation of PD6. Of course it does not find the .msi and the only thing that happens is my computer locks up till I close WMP and then the ACCESS installer goes away. If the removable drive is mounted with the PD6 application directory and the PD6 user data, WMP loads quickly and appears to work fine.
Why is WMP trying to connect to applications or support files in the PD6 application directory?
I can only assume that the new PD6 media tab now is hooked into some windows media services. PD6 must be registered as a client/helper app to windows media and WMP is trying to load or locate the registered resources.
The big problem with this is that my user data path gets over written with PD6 installation defaults in the Windows Registry and I have to manually reset all the PalmDesktop registry data to point PD6 at my really user path on the V: drive.
This should not be installed this way. The association between the two applications appears to be an error in the ACCESS installation package for PD6.
I used Palm.com “Chat” support four or five time for some very basic support in getting my new Centro setup. The Palm.com “Chat” support was great. For this issue they were absolutely useless. One support person affirmed that I should be able to use the removable drive, the next just had me do reinstalls for PD6 (that I had already done) and then told me I would have to use the defaults for C:\Program Files and D:\Documents and Settings\username... They recommended that I use the Palm.com phone support number.
I did this and it had to be one of the worse support calls I have made in a while (case number 1-51474282949). Why is it impossible to get any computer software or hardware company to support the desktop software they putout? I got the same tech support baby talk about “reinstalling the application”, “use the default installation path”, “its not our application” and “you will have to contact Microsoft for support on your operating system”. Ahhhhh!
I was not even able to speak with a “Level 2” tech support person. I demanded that I be connected to a technical person a not just fed the same FAQ crap that I could find on the website. The “Level 2” person would not take my call but just passed the message to the “Level 1” Person that I would have to contact Microsoft.
So I am posting this message here to the Palm fourm in hope that the software engineering team will see this and be able to either patch their software or give me the .reg key to break the association between WMP and PD6. Below I have posted a long list of my Chat support that explains the issues in further technical details, and also details the lack of detailed skilled support available at Palm.com.
    Help? Direction?
I have my palm application directory installed to V:\PalmDesktop6App and the user data files installed to V:\jcollyer-files\PalmDataV6_001 This is a removable drive that I install on my work computer. I remove this drive and take it home with me. Doing this allows me the ability to keep my palm data secure but I can still use my computer at work to manage my palm data.
If the V:\ drive is not mounted when I run palm desktop, Palm desktop messes up the "Path" regestry key:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop\Core]
    "DesktopPath"="V:\\PalmDesktop6App\\"
    "HotSyncPath"="V:\\PalmDesktop6App\\Hotsync.exe"
    "Path"="V:\\jcollyer-files\\PalmDataV6_001"
    "UserConduitFolder"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\jcollyer\\Application Data\\HotSync\\Conduits"
    "PIMVersion"="6.1.0"
    "DesktopExe"="Palm.exe"
    @=""
    "Desktop Language"="ENG"
    "INSTALLDIR"="V:\\PalmDesktop6App\\"
    "VM_Username"="John Collyer"
When the key gets messed up it defaults to the standard palm desktop path:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\jcollyer\My Documents\Palm OS Desktop"
I found this out because every time Windows Media player starts it tries to start Palm Desktop or the Palm Desktop install/remove program. I get a pop up window and progress bar that says “Palm Desktop by Access”. The only way to get rid of this pop up window is to shut down windows media player. So if my V: drive is not mounted just starting windows media player corrupts the user “Path” registry settings. It just so happens our work voicemail uses media player on the computer.

Dan > Hello John_Collyer, Thank you for contacting Palm Technical Support. My name is Dan. How may I help you?
John_Collyer > When the key gets messed up it defaults to the standard palm desktop path:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\jcollyer\My Documents\Palm OS Desktop"
I found this out because every time Windows Media player starts it tries to start Palm Desktop or the Palm Desktop install/remove program. I am using window media player 11.
What the heck is going on? How can I stop Windows Media Player from triggering the palm desktop application? Better yet why does it even try?
It does this when I simply open windows media player, even without a file. Just opening the Windows Media player application by it’s self causes this behavior.
Dan > Please let me go through the information you have provided.
    John_Collyer > Ok standing by...
Dan > I understand that you have issue with the Palm Desktop and windows Media player getting messed up .
Dan > Sure I will guide with the issue .
Dan > May I know since when you are facing the issue ?
Dan > Please let me know the Operating System you are using. Is it Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista or MAC?
John_Collyer > I had this problem from the first install about two weeks. I use PalmDesktop 4 with my T2 for years on a removable drive never had an issue. PD6 only allows me to set the user path during installation. So I have been having issues with the reg keys getting messed up for a while. I though just creating a .reg file to fix the problems was going to be simple till I found windows media player was trying to autostart palm software???
    John_Collyer > Windows XP SP3
John_Collyer > I am a new owner of the Palm Centro not using the T2 with PD6
Dan > Thank you for information .
    Dan > I got the issue .
Dan > There are more than one version of the Palm software in the computer .
    John_Collyer > No only PD6 now
Dan > That's reason the Drivers in the Registry are messing up and causing the issue .
    Dan > Okay .
Dan > Do you have any data in the Palm Desktop ?
John_Collyer > Yes, when the V: drive is mounted everything works great, perfect. Windows Media player even load without a hitch. I would even deal with the .reg fix work around I made to over write the registry. I still don't understand why the application tries to load when it is installed on the V: drive if the v: drive is not present. It has to be the install/uninstall .msi file that runs the Add/Remove programs feature in widows control panel. Why does any of this change the user path?
    Dan > I will explain you .
Dan > The reason for change of the path is with the corrupted applications and computer settings .
John_Collyer > Sorry, Why would the .msi file run if Windows Media is started?
Dan > .MSI file is the supporting file for Windows Media player .
Dan > That's reason for executing of .msi file during the windows media player .
Dan > To fix the issue we must perform clean uninstall and reinstall so that you will not have any further issue .
Dan > Let me know if you are comfortable with the clean uninstall and reinstall if the Palm software .
John_Collyer > I've uninstalled PD6 and reinstalled it like 12 times. If the V: drive is missing it really messes up the PD6 software. To keep me from doing this by launching PD6 from the C: drive I installed it to V:. No .exe no launchy. It works fine. What is hooking into windows media player. A .msi is a Microsoft install package, not a media file. We can do a clean install but why would running windows media player start the palm install/uninstall .msi file? I have not heard why?
John_Collyer > All my installs have worked fine. Unless there is a deeper cleaning process you can help me with other than running the remove program, is it worth trying AGAIN?
Dan > Did you perform clean uninstall and reinstall >
John_Collyer > Clean = remove program, reinstall, and sync to a new user folder? Then Yes. Other options?
Dan > No we need top perform few other steps .
    John_Collyer > Ok shall I "Remove Program"?
Dan > No please wait .
Dan > First please let me know if you have any data in the Palm Desktop in the computer .
John_Collyer > Yes, but it is also going to be kept in the phone correct? It will survive if we create a new user folder right?
    Dan > Yes .
Dan > Please let me know the user name given during the Sync .
John_Collyer > Well then I think it is safe, I have recently hotsynced so the data should be a match?
    John_Collyer > John Collyer
    Dan > Cool .
Dan > Thank you for information .
Dan > In the computer open My documents -->Palm OS Desktop-->locate folder called CoolyJ .
Dan > In the computer open My documents -->Palm OS Desktop-->locate folder called CoolyJ .
John_Collyer > No user folder there.... It's on the V: drive V:\jcollyer-files\PalmDataV6_001\CollyeJ Yes?
    Dan > Please wait .
Dan > Please right click on the Palm Desktop and then click on Properties .
John_Collyer > the .exe in V:\PalmDesktop6App or the shortcut in start menu?
    John_Collyer > start menu= V:\PalmDesktop6App\Palm.exe
Dan > You will have the Palm Desktop icon on the computer desktop .
    Dan > Okay .
Dan > Thank you for information .
Dan > Please take the back of the Palm Desktop data in the computer .
    John_Collyer > Destop target = V:\PalmDesktop6App\Palm.exe tpp
John_Collyer > ??? Please take the back of the Palm Desktop data in the computer
Dan > I mean to tell you that we must save all data of the Palm Desktop in different location .
    Dan > I will assist you .
Dan > In the computer open V:drive-->locate Palm folder .
Dan > Open Palm folder and check if you have folder called CoolyJ .
    John_Collyer > V:\jcollyer-files\PalmDataV6_001\CollyeJ
    John_Collyer > No CoolyJ
    Dan > Okay .
Dan > In the computer open Vrive-->Collerfiles-->Copy Palm folder and paste on the computer desktop .
    John_Collyer > done
    Dan > Okay .
Dan > Do not delete the Pal folder that was copied to computer desktop .
    John_Collyer > ok
Dan > First go to Start-->Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs. There Palm or PalmOne or Palm Desktop will be listed. Click Remove against it.
Let me know once you are done with unistallation process.
    John_Collyer > starting
    John_Collyer > done, next
Dan > Now in the computer open V:drive-->Collerfiles-->Rename Palm folder to Palmold .
    John_Collyer > already there
    Dan > Okay .
Dan > Now we need to perform Registry Clean up .
Dan > Please perform the steps provided .
Dan > 1. Click on Start.
    2. Click on Run.
    3. Type "regedit" and click Ok.
    4. Then Registry Editor window will open.
    5. Double click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
    6. Then click on +sign beside Software.
    7. Now delete all the folders which start with Palm.
    8. Also delete the folder called US robotics.
    9. Now Double click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
    10. Then click on +sign beside Software.
    11. Now delete all the folders which start with Palm.
    John_Collyer > still working
Dan > Please take your time .
Dan > I will be with you .
    John_Collyer > done
    Dan > Cool .
Dan > You are pretty fast .
Dan > Now clean uninstall of the Palm software is done .
John_Collyer > I was already deep in the registry look at this all thats how I found the "Path"
John_Collyer > Now we reinstall? Can I still use the V: drive for application files and user data?
    Dan > Yes .
    Dan > You can use V:drive .
Dan > After you install the Palm software perform Sync and make sure that Sync is success .
Dan > And you will not have sny issue with the Windows media player messing up .
John_Collyer > Ok I will start the PD6 install now
    Dan > Please go a head .
Dan > Thank you for all the cooperation and patience in the chat session .,
    John_Collyer > working almost done
    Dan > Awesome .
Dan > But after installation is complete we need to restart the computer .
Dan > We must restart the computer for necessary changes to take place .
John_Collyer > how do I get back to you in support?
Dan > I assure that you will not have any further issue ,
Dan > However if you do have any further issue .
Dan > Please login with the same user name and email address .
John_Collyer > Palm Support can find me after that?
    Dan > Yes .
Dan > I will have Our chat session in Our Data Base .
John_Collyer > Ok then it is time for a restart?
Dan > So that once you re contact us we will check with the required information and pull the chat session already we have done with .
Dan > And proceed with the further steps .
Dan > Please go ahead .
John_Collyer > Till then, good bye...
Dan > Please let me know if I can be of any further help .
Dan > Analyst has closed chat and left the room
Did all this above. Still have Windows Media Player trying to launch the ACCESS .msi installer which creates these processes:
    IDriver.exe (x5)
    IdriverT.exe (x1)
    MSIexec.exe (x3)
I have let windows media player and windows installer run a bit longer and I get a second window titled "windows installer" with the text:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter and alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Palm Desktop by ACCESS.msi' in the box below.
    [C:\DOCUME~1\jcollyer\LOCALS~1\Temp\_is4\]
    this is the default text.
I browsed my way to C:\WINDOWS\Installer and found a new .msi for PD6 called C:\WINDOWS\Installer\45599.msi and renamed it to C:\WINDOWS\Installer\45599_PalmNeedsBetterSoftware_msi
Still have the same issues from above. I thought if the .msi failed to be found then the error might just get passed over. So I do not know where IDriver.exe or other MS Installer applications is getting the values for 'Palm Desktop by ACCESS.msi'?
Again it is very odd that the ACCESS installer it trying to run when windows media player is launched (even with out any media, app only). Please do not tell me to do another "Clean Install" that is just BABY-TALK tech support at this point!!! I need to know why the PalmDesktop ACCESS installer is hooking into Windows Media Player. There is no doubt something odd is going on. As long as the V: drive where my Palm Desktop applications and user data is stored there is no problem. As soon as the V: drive is off line I have all these issues.
I noticed that PalmDesktop now has advanced media tools to "Make Video" in the media tab of Palm Desktop. This is where you can export a .mpg slide show of all you photos from your palm photos.
I would bet you a free year of Verizon's wireless data plan that the new Palm Desktop is registered as some type of client application to windows media service. When windows media player loads it tries to register all the clients and the Palm media client application is not available so some how MS Windows tries to start the PalmDesktop installer to fix the client media application.
Please note that I am not using Pocket Tunes at all, not trying to sync pTunes with Windows media or Rhapsody or any other media junk. Right now I want my palm to just be a extra smart contact and calendar manager, that’s all.
PALM NEEDS TO PATCH THIS. Palm Desktop should call Windows Media when it needs it, not have Palm Desktop registered as a client application to Windows Media by default!
PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS A SIMPLE FAQ FIX FOR ALL NONSENSE???

Thank you so much for replying.
Yes I have removed and reinstalled WMP.
I had good results with the PD6 application installed on the default path onto the C: drive with the one exception that if the application was launched by accident and the user data path was not available, the PD6 application would blow away my custom user path registry settings. Now that I know what they are I have made a .reg file to repair my registry to my desired user data paths.
Installing the application on the removable drive appeared to help prevent me from launching the application by accident and overwriting my registry with default user paths.
So which is the less of the two evils?
If the application directory is not available, windows media player still tries to launch the .msi for installing PD6.
If I install the application to the C: drive but the user data to the removable drive, launching the PD6 application without the user data drive will still corrupt my registry settings for a user data path.
Both these issues seem like a logical (if not easy) fix that should be done in the PD6 application and installation package. I mean really, cannot anyone tell me why windows media player is checking the PD6 application directory? Why in PD4 did we have an option control for setting the user data path from the PD4 application? Why is this option not in the PD6 application, just the installer?
I am given a choice during installation to move the user data to another non default location. Why else would this be provided if not to accommodate my kind of request to store the user data into an alternate location other than “My Document”. Certainly Palm is not trying to force the users on how to protect and store their personal data?

  • Windows Media Player plug-in issues - Safari 4.0.5 on Windows 7

    Hi guys,
I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 and of course the page to chose a browser popped up. Glad to see my beloved Safari browser to be available I installed it. Of course not all was running smoothly but after the 'mandatory' flash, Windows Media Player and QuickTime plug in I assumed all media content should run perfect in Safari.
Unfortunately not for WMV files. I get the 'Safari can't find the internetplugin, MIME-type application/x-mplayer2'error message.
I looked the issue up on the web of course and found out the trouble that Safari had with WMV streaming. What struck me is that this is a Mac only problem I believe (Flip4Mac solution). As I am running Windows 7 I was quite sure that Safari should be able to stream and play WMV files in the browser.
So I removed and installed the Windows Media Player plug-in again (http://www.apple.com/safari/download/plugins.html) but to no avail. I then removed Safari and installed it again, still same problem. I tried the Fire-Fox plug in, no solution.
It really drives me nuts to open IE8 only to play some WMV files in the browser. I hope someone can shed some light on this issue.
Strange thing I noticed: I can't see how I can manage my plug-ins. There seems to be no tab for it in the Safari settings and in the program-files folder I can only find Java.
Thank you so much for your time and effort.

I looked up the internet but can't find anything on this. As no replies here too I guess I'm the only one. The other thing that struck me is the enormous CPU usage when playing flash in the browser. Up to 95%-100% cpu usage when playing HD flash content. First I assumed it was a Flash issue but Internet Explorer never used more then 35%-55%. I then assumed it was just Flash in Safari. Strange thing is, if I maximize the window the cpu load actually drops to 55%. I only get high cpu usage when flash is played in the Safari window. I guess that means it's something to do with the browser and not an isolated flash 'bug'.
Also still no luck playing WMV in the browser itself. Maybe time to look for yet another browser. A shame as I like the Safari browser a lot. MobileMe and iPhone are great to sync bookmarks and the look and feel is great. The engine is not so good unfortunately.

  • "NOT RESPONDING" message whenever I start using my Windows Media Player

I don't know what it is that causes this - if it's something to do with having the lesser expensive Hewlett-Packard computers, but this is the 2nd HP laptop I've had and the one thing I've had in common w/both of them is that, one, I got them for under $500 - about $445 or so, w/tax...anyway, I suppose that the more expensive HPs are better and wouldn't have petty problems like this - but anyway, - the last one I had & this one I currently have - the last one was a Windows 7 and this one is Windows 8, so the O/S has nothing to do w/my problem.  Anyway, it's like this:  every time I turn on the PC, then get it all revved up & ready to go, etc. when I turn on my Windows Media Player (WMP) the thing comes up on screen and it sometimes takes a few seconds, since I have about 740 CDs worth of music on here, but anyway, once the CDs show up on the WMP album page (where they're put up in alpha. order of LP name, as opposed to artist names, etc) - and so, when I go from the "A"s downward, just paging through it, looking for something to listen to, for instance, it ALWAYS, inevitably, without fail, gets stuck, sometimes sooner, sometimes later, but usually by the time I get to the Cs or  Ds, the thing gets stuck and freezes up on me and I can't do anything w/it. Then, when I try to click the mouse a couple times or whatever, I get a message at the top of the WMP box - on the top of the box it reads "Windows Media Player", like usual, but when it freezes up like this and it stays stuck for anywhere from 10 seconds up to a minute sometimes, the message that pops up right next to the "WMP" label on the blue border reads "NOT RESPONDING".  99% of the time, it just takes a little patience and sometimes just clicking the mouse buttons a few times and/or hitting a few keys on the keyboard (not hard, just randomly pressing down on some) - then it will finally come back & unfreeze and I'm usually able to continue browsing through my catalog, but there has been other times when it seems to be in worse shape - it'll read "NOT RESPONDING" for a while and no matter how much I click the left or right mouse buttons, tap the mouse on the pad, or whatever, it might come unstuck for a few seconds, then, I think I'm OK again, but sometimes, as soon as it looks unstuck, I can't get it to move at all and right away the "NOT RESPONDING" message comes right back up (and the page fades a little too) - in fact, lately, just before I did a refresh thing on my PC to try & get things to work better, it was giving me big trouble, it would just sit there, stuck, frozen up and nothing I did would unfreeze it.  I'd be frantically trying to unstick it, but no matter what I did, it'd still be frozen and when it does that, I can't get it to do anything.  Recently, when it would do this, sometimes, if I had not tried to get too far down in the alphabet, I can get a certain album open and get it to start playing, but the "NOT RESPONDING" message will pop up now and again, but the music will play all right, uninterrupted.
Anyway, this is very annoying.  It's been happening for so long now, that I basically take it for granted that it's going to freeze up on me when I 1st bring it up.  I have no idea what's causing this to happen; like I said, this happened when I had a previous HP laptop that was working with Windows 7.
Kind of a long-winded way of putting this issue to anyone, but I just wanted to be clear and specific.
Is there ANYONE out there who owns a cheapo HP? (not a Compaq, the computer co. HP bought for that purpose, to make their cheap computers and differentiate them from the HPs) - But I wonder, it's been so long since I've even checked -does Compaq even exist anymore as a separate entity from parent co. HP?  If not, then that explains why there's a difference between HP laptops that are $400 or so (at Best Buy) and the more slick, expensive HP laptops that have all the bells & whistles and usually run over $1000.  Of course, I'm not about to shell out twice as much money to buy an HP just to see if the more expensive ones don't behave the way their cheap models do.  I also had a Toshiba I bought about 3-4 years ago and I had even more problems with that - one instance was when the CD drive went out on me and I had to ship it in to HP (still under warranty, thank heavens) and they put a new drive in and shipped it back to me.  It also crashed one time, and got infected with a virus or two or three, which meant I had to re-set the computer back to the original factory settings and, not having an external hard-drive with which to back up all my music, pix, documents, etc (my music is the most important stuff on my computer to me), which meant that I had to go through this long hassle of replacing all the music I'd lost. I have a lot of my own hard copies of CDs, but there were so many more CDs that I didn't have copies of, so I had to visit the library over & over, checking out as many as 25-30 CDs at a time on a lucky day, when the library had a lot of the CDs I needed to replace in my WMP.  I don't want this to happen again, so I am going to get an external hardrive but I still don't know for sure if that would work. At least, by resetting the PC to factory settings I was able to get rid of the virus(es) that were screwing my computer up badly
So - has anyone out there had any similar problems?  If so, I would appreciate any help or suggestions you may have as to how to deal with this sort of thing.
Thanks a lot.  Hope to hear from one of you out there in the future.
    Have a nice 4th...

  • Issues with Windows Media Player 10.0

I authered a DVD-R project for a client using DVDSP 3. The check disc plays fine on both Windows XP and of course Mac machines. It was tested in machines running WindDVD2000, PowerDVD, RealPlayer 10.5, Windows Media Player 8 and of course the Macs, and all worked just fine. However, on a Toshiba Laptop running Windows Media Player 10.0, the buttons failed to function when clicked. Does anyone have any experience with this issue, or do you think it's a simple DVD-R versus DVD+R issue?
Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

So, lets be clear, it runs fine on WinDVD2000, PowerDVD, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player 8, Macs and stand-alone players, but it does not play on one computer using Windows Media Player 10. Therefore you think that there is something wrong with the disc?!?!?!
    No.
Its obvious that there is something wrong with that computer. Make sure it has the latest Service Packs and other such files. See if it can play other DVDs. But otherwise focus your attention on what that computer is doing wrong.

  • Windows Media Player 12 under Win 7 Pro 64 nolonger able to play DVD

    Hello TechNet
"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card.  Try installing an updated driver for your video card."
It seems that I have recently joined the chorus of MS users who have a Media Player DRM issue, where DVD's that would work perfectly well in WMP12 and MCE are nolonger being recognised. The error message above is displayed now, every time a commercial DVD
movie is inserted into the DVD drive where WIN 7 Pro 64 autoplay is used to open WMP12, The instruction to update video drivers is also not the solution.
Considering that I have until recently, been able to play DVD with my current NVIDIA driver 314.22Whql (now updated to 332.21Whql) and my DVD drive remains exactly as before, the Codec's installed with Win7 Pro 64 WMP 12 are unchanged and were working
fine. I do not know now what has caused the removal of DRM or the suggestion that my MPEG2 codecs can nolonger allow access to  commercial DVD content.
I have tried all the suggestions raised about this issue from other MS users and MPV's in the forum, I have renamed the DRM folder and reset Windows Media DRM as directed. I have checked for a suitable MPEG2 codec/decoder on my system of which I have
several choices, including the one installed with Win 7 Pro 64 / WMP 12.
I have checked to see if I have a region issue with my DVD drive, and can confirm that the DVD drive will play DVD content when Playing DVD with "NERO 9 Showtime", this proves to me that the codec/DVD decoder is working in
my system, I then try Win 7s MCE (Media Center) and WMP12, the result is a black unresponsive screen in MCE, and the error message noted above in WMP with a black screen in the player.
I would like to know if MS are working on a rectification for the issue, as none of the proposed solutions deliver any functionality back to MS default DVD players. Is there an update in the works to provide a definitive solution for WMP12 and MCE DVD functionality.
Could you provide any new ideas, other than those already proposed to regain DVD function under MS default DVD programs.
    Cheers Jeff

    Hi Sengupta,
Yes I have already tried - Reset DRM using the method described in a post by another MS MPV here in the forum.
This is the method I used :
    1. First open My Computer go to Tools>FolderOptions>View> uncheck >Hide Protected Operating System Files >
so that I can see the DRM folder and its contents.
    2. Go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM  >Delete the contents of the DRM folder, these hidden files and the Cache folder with its contents. (Cache,
    blackbox.bin, drmstore.hds, IndivBox.key,
    IndivBox_64.key, v2ksndv.bla, v3ks.bla,
v3ks.sec) DRM folder empty ready for DRM Reset via web link.
    3. Go to start menu Find InternetExplorer > right Click icon select > Run as Administrator > Blank Web page opens > I then paste the link provided (http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp)
into the Url space > click Enter > a web page for Windows Media Technologies (Security Component Upgrade) opens.
    4. I then click on the 'Upgrade Button' and wait for it to search for upgrade components (Progress Status: Upgrading security components.... ), A download dialog then appears asking me to proceed. I then click 'Upgrade' and wait for it to
    finish downloading & installation
(Progress Bar). . The install then completes saying the upgrade was successful I then click 'Done' close Browser and restart Computer.
    5. I then recheck inside the DRM folder that I had erased - the new downloaded files and Cache Folder with contents are all back inside the folder, as expected.
    6. Upon restart I place a DVD that I know was working before into the DVD drive and wait, the DVD autostarts WMP12 with the onscreen DVD Disk navigation menu appearing. I then click 'Play' with in the menu option, to begin the
    Movie.
    7. The resulting error reappears when clicking Play
"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder,
and video card.  Try installing an updated driver for your video card."
I will try once more to Reset the DRM using the Tool you have linked to, and follow your instruction exactly. Will see how it goes!  ............stay tuned
It would be much appreciated If you could research  which MS update has broken DRM, the recent updates which I can think of right now would be :
nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275
now replaced by Nvidia v332.21Whql Drivers.
Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems
    Possibly,
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 64bit ( which I have had to remove, rolling back to IE10 to allow use in another Forum without errors and glitches). something about IE11 Browser is not right, maybe a security component from IE11
has interfered with DRM (Just guessing though)
But I think it is more than likely a security update that was downloaded and installed at the same time as these other major Microsoft Update offerings.
    Cheers Jeff
