Windows Media Player requests a licence.

Playing a ripped CD in Widows Media Player, requests that I download a licence, but returns the following Error: your Netscape browser does not have "Microsoft® Windows Media Services" plug-ins installed. How can I resolve this?

Bug & Conflict w/ Palm Destop 6 & Windows Media Player

I am a long time Palm user but my T2 was not getting much use considering I was already carrying Two cell phones. But I was excited to get an upgrade to a Centro for one of my phones. Now I am dealing with the differences between PalmDesktop4 (PD4) and PD6 on Windows XP SP3.
I found what appears to be a critical bug in the installation of PD6 in that it has some very undesirable interactions with Windows Media Player (WMP) 10 & 11. Let me preface by saying that I am not using WMP or PocketTunes for any syncing or transferring any media to my Centro. My Centro is only used for calendar, contacts, calculators, and Docs2Go.
I have installed PD6 and the PD6 user data to a removable drive for personal privacy on a work computer. The error is that when ever the drive is not mounted and wmplayer.exe is started, Windows searches for the Palm Access Installation package on my removable drive and attempts to start a installation of PD6. Of course it does not find the .msi and the only thing that happens is my computer locks up till I close WMP and then the ACCESS installer goes away. If the removable drive is mounted with the PD6 application directory and the PD6 user data, WMP loads quickly and appears to work fine.
Why is WMP trying to connect to applications or support files in the PD6 application directory?
I can only assume that the new PD6 media tab now is hooked into some windows media services. PD6 must be registered as a client/helper app to windows media and WMP is trying to load or locate the registered resources.
The big problem with this is that my user data path gets over written with PD6 installation defaults in the Windows Registry and I have to manually reset all the PalmDesktop registry data to point PD6 at my really user path on the V: drive.
This should not be installed this way. The association between the two applications appears to be an error in the ACCESS installation package for PD6.
I used Palm.com “Chat” support four or five time for some very basic support in getting my new Centro setup. The Palm.com “Chat” support was great. For this issue they were absolutely useless. One support person affirmed that I should be able to use the removable drive, the next just had me do reinstalls for PD6 (that I had already done) and then told me I would have to use the defaults for C:\Program Files and D:\Documents and Settings\username... They recommended that I use the Palm.com phone support number.
I did this and it had to be one of the worse support calls I have made in a while (case number 1-51474282949). Why is it impossible to get any computer software or hardware company to support the desktop software they putout? I got the same tech support baby talk about “reinstalling the application”, “use the default installation path”, “its not our application” and “you will have to contact Microsoft for support on your operating system”. Ahhhhh!
I was not even able to speak with a “Level 2” tech support person. I demanded that I be connected to a technical person a not just fed the same FAQ crap that I could find on the website. The “Level 2” person would not take my call but just passed the message to the “Level 1” Person that I would have to contact Microsoft.
So I am posting this message here to the Palm fourm in hope that the software engineering team will see this and be able to either patch their software or give me the .reg key to break the association between WMP and PD6. Below I have posted a long list of my Chat support that explains the issues in further technical details, and also details the lack of detailed skilled support available at Palm.com.

I found this out because every time Windows Media player starts it tries to start Palm Desktop or the Palm Desktop install/remove program. So if my V: drive is not mounted just starting windows media player corrupts the user “Path” registry settings. It just so happens our work voicemail uses media player on the computer.

It does this when I simply open windows media player, even without a file. Just opening the Windows Media player application by it’s self causes this behavior.

I still don't understand why the application tries to load when it is installed on the V: drive if the v: drive is not present. To keep me from doing this by launching PD6 from the C: drive I installed it to V:. No .exe no launchy. It works fine. What is hooking into windows media player. A .msi is a Microsoft install package, not a media file. We can do a clean install but why would running windows media player start the palm install/uninstall .msi file? I have not heard why?

I have let windows media player and windows installer run a bit longer and I get a second window titled "windows installer" with the text:

I browsed my way to C:\WINDOWS\Installer and found a new .msi for PD6 called C:\WINDOWS\Installer\45599.msi and renamed it to C:\WINDOWS\Installer\45599_PalmNeedsBetterSoftware_msi
Still have the same issues from above. I thought if the .msi failed to be found then the error might just get passed over. So I do not know where IDriver.exe or other MS Installer applications is getting the values for 'Palm Desktop by ACCESS.msi'?
Again it is very odd that the ACCESS installer it trying to run when windows media player is launched (even with out any media, app only). Please do not tell me to do another "Clean Install" that is just BABY-TALK tech support at this point!!! I need to know why the PalmDesktop ACCESS installer is hooking into Windows Media Player. There is no doubt something odd is going on. As long as the V: drive where my Palm Desktop applications and user data is stored there is no problem. As soon as the V: drive is off line I have all these issues.
I noticed that PalmDesktop now has advanced media tools to "Make Video" in the media tab of Palm Desktop. This is where you can export a .mpg slide show of all you photos from your palm photos.
I would bet you a free year of Verizon's wireless data plan that the new Palm Desktop is registered as some type of client application to windows media service. When windows media player loads it tries to register all the clients and the Palm media client application is not available so some how MS Windows tries to start the PalmDesktop installer to fix the client media application.
Please note that I am not using Pocket Tunes at all, not trying to sync pTunes with Windows media or Rhapsody or any other media junk. Right now I want my palm to just be a extra smart contact and calendar manager, that’s all.
PALM NEEDS TO PATCH THIS. Palm Desktop should call Windows Media when it needs it, not have Palm Desktop registered as a client application to Windows Media by default!
PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS A SIMPLE FAQ FIX FOR ALL NONSENSE???

Yes I have removed and reinstalled WMP.
I had good results with the PD6 application installed on the default path onto the C: drive with the one exception that if the application was launched by accident and the user data path was not available, the PD6 application would blow away my custom user path registry settings. Now that I know what they are I have made a .reg file to repair my registry to my desired user data paths.
Installing the application on the removable drive appeared to help prevent me from launching the application by accident and overwriting my registry with default user paths.
So which is the less of the two evils?
If the application directory is not available, windows media player still tries to launch the .msi for installing PD6.
If I install the application to the C: drive but the user data to the removable drive, launching the PD6 application without the user data drive will still corrupt my registry settings for a user data path.
Both these issues seem like a logical (if not easy) fix that should be done in the PD6 application and installation package. I mean really, cannot anyone tell me why windows media player is checking the PD6 application directory? Why in PD4 did we have an option control for setting the user data path from the PD4 application? Why is this option not in the PD6 application, just the installer?
I am given a choice during installation to move the user data to another non default location. Why else would this be provided if not to accommodate my kind of request to store the user data into an alternate location other than “My Document”. Certainly Palm is not trying to force the users on how to protect and store their personal data?

N73 with Windows Media Player...

Afternoon,
I am having the most stupidist of problems with my n73...
I have put all of MY CD's onto my NAS via Windows Media Player (v11) using the WMA format. Of course some of (if not all of them) have this bloomin DRM hanging over it. So, I thought if I transferred the music using WMP to my n73 that WMP would sort out all the licencing pants for me.
NO.
As soon as i play the track on the n73 it says 'unable to play selected media', and shows a little icon next to the track which looks like a broken file...
Why can't I play my own music, paid for, on my music player (n73)...?

DRM is really a pain in the **bleep**, lost many of my paid musics, it has compatibilty issue! one have a hard time transfering from one gear to another.

Content Engine compatability with Windows Media Player

I am currently running ACNS version 5.5 on our CE510 Content Engine. We want to set this box up to serve VOD requests from WMT. I think the clients on site are all using Windows Media Player version 10. Does this version of ACNS software work with Windows Media Player 10?

Need DVD to play on windows media player also?

I made a dvd of some footage and output as a quicktime movie. I then used the best DVD setting in compressor. Lastly I used toast to burn the dvd. The dvd will play on everything except the windows media player. How can I get the dvd to play in the windows media player also. I looked at the flipformac site and was wondering if that program will do it. What are you guys using?

My statement 'Windows Media Player is not a DVD video player' is not mine, it is a Microsoft definition. Windows Media Player is specifically for playing Windows Media Video files - WMV. It can also play mpeg(1) AVI and other sound files like CD audio.
For some kind of licencing/payments thing, WMP is not packaged with an mpeg2 codec and some other bits that make the DVD interactive. Microsft's advice is to use the software player that is packaged with the DVD drive.
What can be tried is the Microsoft utility which might let the video play but might not navigate correctly. Not all codecs are compatable with WMP.
My own suggestion for reliability is, to playback DVD Video always use the installed dedicated DVD player and never WMP.
What can be a problem is that the user has not installed the DVD software player which is often on a separate resources disc.

What is the best setting for compressing to a Window Media Player?

I now have the latest Compressor, just now need to figure out which is the best setting to use for compressing to a Windows Media Player. Does anyone know which is the best method?

I'd propose you buy a licence for Telestreams FLip4MAC (flipfactory) Quicktime components to enable ENCODING for HD and SD as you need. It works ok however none of my work requires specifics for windows player. I have a licence just the same.
If you have Flip4mac already installed, you can use the system preferneces panel to order a an ENCODER component licence. There may be others around as well.
You can just use compressor.app and change the inspector video to use "quicktime components/windows media encoder" in the batch job.. its pretty easy.

Exporting for Windows Media Player/MPEG (help in translating mixed message)

So a client of mine had an unusual request today. He's been asked by some tech folk who are doing 'commercials' in the theater lobby to provide them with clips with these specifications (and I use that term loosely):
MPEG files that are non-compressed and play in Windows Media Player (no Quicktime allowed) and are Audio Enhanced. Needs to be burned on a CD not a DVD.
Yeah, sounds like folk who have no clue as to what they want and are trying to pretend they do to me too
So...any ideas on what they really want? And is it best to export via Compressor or invest in that Flip4Mac?
I'm probably going to get a phone call from the tech folk on Monday and want to be a bit forearmed w/some idea of what the heck they REALLY mean!

Playing back Recorded TV Programs using Windows Media Player and only hearing Sound from Front Speakers

Hi All,
I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Service Pack 1 with Windows Media Player 11 installed.
When I click on one of my Recorded TV Programs to watch and hear, I can only hear the Sound coming from the Front Speakers.
When I right-click on the Program and open it up in Real Player Cloud. I can indeed watch the program and hear Clear Sound coming from all 5 Speakers plus the Subwoofer.
What setting do I change to use Windows Media Player and have sound coming from all 5 Speakers and the Subwoofer?

The Files in question were Recorded by Beyond TV to my Local Hard Drive.
When I open the recording in Real Player Cloud, installed on my computer, not streaming over the Internet, I hear it correctly played.
When I use Windows Media Player, nothing can be heard from the Rear Speakers.
Speakers and Hardware are working fine.

How to communicate servlets with windows media player

I am new to web programming I am developing an application through which a client can play media file.
I am getting problem in,how to communicate servlet through windows media player.
I have developed the basic architecture of my application using tiger server,now I want to open media file through windows media player using openURL option(http request).
Can any body guide me how to build a servlet which can listen this request and how to respond appropriately

Your sevlet will have to set the response contentType to the appropriate mime type

and contentLength to the file size (in bytes), then open the mp3/wma file and write the bytes to the servlet output stream.
You could also choose to return an asx file (an xml document containing a url of the media file), and windows media player will automatically lookup the mp3/wma file stored on your web server.

During last 2/3 days both attachments and samplers fail to work, but when playing music from library held in Windows Media Player no problems. This would appear to show no problem with speakers etc and I have not knowingly amended any audio controls.

Yes I have removed and reinstalled WMP.
I had good results with the PD6 application installed on the default path onto the C: drive with the one exception that if the application was launched by accident and the user data path was not available, the PD6 application would blow away my custom user path registry settings. Now that I know what they are I have made a .reg file to repair my registry to my desired user data paths.
Installing the application on the removable drive appeared to help prevent me from launching the application by accident and overwriting my registry with default user paths.
So which is the less of the two evils?
If the application directory is not available, windows media player still tries to launch the .msi for installing PD6.
If I install the application to the C: drive but the user data to the removable drive, launching the PD6 application without the user data drive will still corrupt my registry settings for a user data path.
Both these issues seem like a logical (if not easy) fix that should be done in the PD6 application and installation package. I mean really, cannot anyone tell me why windows media player is checking the PD6 application directory? Why in PD4 did we have an option control for setting the user data path from the PD4 application? Why is this option not in the PD6 application, just the installer?
I am given a choice during installation to move the user data to another non default location. Why else would this be provided if not to accommodate my kind of request to store the user data into an alternate location other than “My Document”. Certainly Palm is not trying to force the users on how to protect and store their personal data?

Restoring Windows Media Player as IE default

After finding only other posts asking for help on the same problem, I spent half a day looking into how to get Quicktime to stop taking over as the default player for MPEG movies in IE. What I found does the job but leaves IE without Quicktime support from the ActiveX component.
Because the Quicktime support in IE is implemented as an ActiveX component, you can remove it from IE's view by unregistering it from your system. The ActiveX component is named QTPlugin.ocx and is located in your Quicktime install directory (at least for the current version). To unregister it, run the following command in a Command Prompt window (i.e., on the command line) or from the Start->Run menu item:
regsvr32 /u "<insert your Quicktime install path here>\QTPlugin.ocx"
This command leaves the ActiveX component isntalled on your system but removes it from being seen by Internet Explorer. Therefore, the previous default handler of MPEG movies, Windows Media Player in my case, takes over as before Quicktime was installed. You won't be able to play any Quicktime content inside IE in this state but the standalone Quicktime player still works. You can reverse the effect by running the command, again, but without the '/u' flag. That re-registers the ActiveX component and IE uses it as the default, once again.
I hope this helps someone and I'd like to say that I'm not at all pleased with Apple's "taking over" IE this way nor with their lack of response to repeated requests for help in this matter from various people on this forum. And, yes, I tried telling Quicktime to not handle .mpg files both at install time and in Preferences. I, too, would have expected that to take care of it but it did not.

Forgive me for not being a computer savvy but where exactly is the Quicktime Control Panel? I've tried to access Quicktime options via right-clicking a dimmed question mark (yes, I have the same problem) and accessing Plug-in Settings. But this doesn't seem correct, because I've already "turned off" all file types associated with Quicktime under the "File Types" Tab and restarted Firefox but nothing happened. Might you be able to lead me in the right direction?

Blu-ray DVD no longer recognized by HP MediaSmart or Windows Media Player

I have the HP Pavilion Elite HPE 250-f desktop computer. This computer includes a CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive. I bought this computer in 2010, and all these years I have successfully played CDs and DVDs on the computer. Until now, I have not attempted to play a Blu-ray DVD.
A few days ago, I rented the "Divergent" Blu-ray DVD from my public library. The "Divergent" regular DVD was included in the package.
I put the Blu-ray into the CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive. The HP MediaSmart software recognized the Blu-ray, but the software got into an endless "update" loop and did not play the Blu-ray. Microsoft's Windows Media Player also recognized the Blu-ray, but did not play the Blu-ray.
One solution I heard about was to plug an HDMI patch cord into the back of my computer box, with the other end of the HDMI patch cord not plugged into anything. Supposedly, the HP MediaSmart software would play a Blu-ray if the software sensed an HDMI cord. Unfortunately, that did not work.
I then downloaded the Media Player Codec Pack, http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html Supposedly, this Codec Pack would allow the Windows Media Player to play the Blu-ray. The Codec Pack included the Classic Media Player.
I tried to play the Blu-ray on the current Windows Media Player and the Classic version, with the new codecs installed. But nothing worked. I then used System Restore to get rid of the Media Player Codec Pack. I found out that, in addition to the codecs, I was supposed to use the Slysoft AnyDVD HD software. However, I did not make any more attempts to use the codecs, and I did not download the Slysoft software.
Now, here's where things get weird. Now, the HP MediaSmart software and the current Windows Media Player do not even *recognize* the Blu-ray DVD. They play the regular "Divergent" DVD very well. But they do not even *see* the Blu-ray DVD.
I uninstalled the BDDVDRW CH20L driver, version 6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255). I restarted the computer, and a new driver was installed. The new driver's version is 6.1.7601.17514. But the Blu-ray DVD is *still* not being recognized.
Now, I'm hearing that a Blu-ray lens cleaner may be required.
So, what's going on here? Did the codecs in the Codec Pack damage the Blu-ray lens? Please advise.

sp60287.exe seems to be for Windows 8. I have Windows 7.
But even if I got a PowerDVD version for Windows 7, I still have the issue of the Blu-ray disc not even being detected. The Blu-ray disc is in the drive, but the software (HP MediaSmart, Windows Media Player) says that there is no disc in the drive. This "no detection" issue began after I installed the codecs in the Codec Pack and tried to make Windows Media Player work with the codecs. Is there an issue with the Blu-ray lens? Or is there an issue with the Blu-ray disc itself?
I notice that the regular "Divergent" DVD has no fingerprints on it, even after I touch it. But the Blu-ray DVD has lots of fingerprints. Does the Blu-ray have some kind of weird surface? Is there some problem with the Blu-ray's surface that is causing the Blu-ray to not even be detected?

IPOD not recognized by Windows Media Player

MY IPOD is no longer recognized by Window Media Player--neither version 10 or 11. It once was recognized then I added my digital camera to my compute and all the sudden it thinks my camera is my IPOD. I disabled the camera, now the computer just doesn't recognize that an IPOD is attached. My IPOD works fine with I TUNES. Please advise as to how I can fix this.

If iTunes works with iPOd then computer is seeing that iPod is attached.
As for Windows Media Player I didn't know iPOd ever worked with it.

I realize this may be a really dumb posting but I'm looking at purchasing a iPod Nano but my concerns are about how you load your music onto the ipod. I currently have all my music in my Windows Media Player but the ipod webiste says that I have to use the iTunes program. Ok, I am definitely very technologically challenged, and I got a nano for christmas, and I have no idea how to get my music files from windows media player to itunes. I use limewire, which then puts all files in Media player, but my roomie accidentally deleted all my music from limewire, so now all that is in my itunes is all the music he downloaded from limewire after he deleted the library. Please help!!! I really wanna use my nano!!

Windows Media Player on Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Edition

I have a server with Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter edition installed. This server is being used as a terminal server and I needed to have Windows Media Player installed in order to use a certain feature of a program running on the terminal server. After
researching online I found that all I should need to do is install the Desktop Experience feature and Windows Media Player was included in that. After installing the Desktop Experience feature and restarting the server, I was not able to find Windows
Media Player anywhere. I tried the same process on another server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter with the same results.
I was curious as to if this was a Datacenter thing where it was specifically not included with Datacenter edition. I was not able to find any documentation stating that WMP was not included in Datacenter, and everything that I found stated that the feature
sets for Standard and Datacenter were the same, it was just the licensing for them was different.
Curious to see if it would get installed with Desktop Experience on Standard, I spun up a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard VM and installed Desktop Experience and sure enough WMP was installed as well. I then upgraded the Standard VM to Datacenter with a
Datacenter product key and after a restart WMP was still present.
I have also tried this exact same process with Windows Server 2012 (non R2) Datacenter edition and WMP was installed as expected, so it appears that this is only a problem with R2.
My question is, I this "works as designed" and I was just not able to find the documentation to support it or is this a bug?
Update: After doing some more playing around I noticed that if I did a clean install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and then installed the Desktop Experience feature and WMP does get installed. Then I remembered that on the servers that I was trying to
install WMP on and it wasn't working were upgraded from 2012 to 2012 R2. So I created a brand new VM and installed Server 2012 Datacenter (non R2), then upgraded to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and installed Desktop Experience and sure enough, WMP did not
install. So now I really think it is a bug and it is related to the 2012 to 2012 R2 upgrade process.
