Windows Media vs iTunes - HELP!

Hi, while at uni, I have an old computer with windows 98, and thus cannot use itunes. I used Windows Media to upload a whole lot of music to my ipod, but it doesnt upload it as albums or anything - just each individual song, which are placed all over my music library.
I want to organise it properly, so I can actually find the song or album I want to listen to, and now that I am at home using windows XP, I assumed I could use itunes to do that.....however, the music is nowhere to be found when I use itunes - but it is all there if I connect the ipod to media. I accidentally loaded them on under contacts, and I cant get to that either on itunes.
How can I access this music?!
p.s. its a nano.

As a Windows Media Player fan...I too understand your pain. Here's the bottom line:
iTunes DOES NOT search your drives and update the library regularly. You have to do all updates manually!
I have 750 GBs of music so I can relate to your concerns and frustrations. The MAC file system is very "odd" in my opinion...the music folder is arranged by artist/sub-artist...so you can have MULTIPLE files for one artist...and even more frustrating...one album! How crazy is this? I rip all of my CDs using Windows Media Player because I TRULY HATE how iTunes arranges music! (Then I add the folder/file to iTunes after the rip). This way, I know I can find the song file again if I ever need to!
Anyway...for the last part of your post...are you trying to ADD the music files to your Mac or just a file path? If you're adding them...they'll go onto your computer in the iTunes format, thus your frustrations, sorry!
If you're just trying to play the music from a remote device...then the existing file structures should hold and I'm not sure why you're having problems.

  • Move/convert Windows Media to iTunes

    Hello -
I was given a new ipod (5th gen) yesterday and I would like to start moving/converting my extensive music collection from Windows Media to iTunes.  I found the "Add Folder/File to Library" and was able to start being able to play music in iTunes and on my iPod.
I guess I want to make sure that I am heading in the right direction. I still have another MP3 player that I use when i run and i would like to still be able to sync with Windows Media for that non-apple device.  Also, I don't want to have redundant music file...and that doesn't seem to be the case.  But just wondering.
Thanks for any suggestions or direction.

Import the music into your iTunes library. For instructions go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Import.
iTunes will convert the format into a format compatible with the iPod.
If you go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced and do not check the box that says copy files to to iTunes media folder then I think with will not copy the windows media file to the iTunes library but there will be a copy of the iPod compatible file in the iTunes library.

  • How to transfer songs from Windows Media to iTunes

I cannot transfer songs from Windows Media into ITunes....Can you help?

Do it for free on a PC running iTunes.
Do it for free on an older Mac capable of running Audion.
    Conversion software (mostly commercial):
Switch (free basic version) - http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html  - I'm not sure if this will do WMA
    All2MP3 - http://download.cnet.com/All2MP3/3000-2140_4-190407.html - mixed success with WMA
Flip4mac - need the intermediate payware version which lets you convert.  Use with Quicktime player.  Flip4Mac - http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.asp?prodid=flip4mac wmv  - The free version will let Quicktime play but not convert Windows Media files.
After installation a new Flip4Mac pane will appear in System Preferences.  Make sure you set the boxes to ensure that it will play WMV files in Quicktime.
VLC - not really a converter but will do some in the export menu but may be slow and a bit of a learning curve.
Explore online converters where you upload a file in one format and download in another.

  • Uploading a video in Windows Media Player format HELP

I just used the Insert:Media:Plugin to upload a video in .wav format and when I look at it on the web, it just says "ng PL" and nowhere does it play.  What am I doing wrong?  I did 'put' it onto the server.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,

First, the wav format is an audio format not a Windows media format.  Thus the computer can decide what to do with it.  Either iTunes or WMP or any other media player could pick up the file.
Second, wav files are typically uncompressed.  Thus you are making your users download a file that is larger than they need to be download if it were to be encoded as MP3 or AAC, both of which are more optimized for web streaming and/or distribution.
Then what you need to look at is a Flash player or if HTML5 is an option, the audio tag, to embed the audio file onto your website.

  • Easy way to get music from Windows Media to itunes

I have the 30gb ipod and I have over 450 songs saved on my computers hard drive as wma files. Is there as easy way to get these into itunes other than converting one song at a time? I tried syncing my ipod to Windows Media (where all my songs are) and it states that that all songs have been synced, but my ipod is still blank. Please help me or I am going to buy a different music player that can sync to other outlets then itunes.
    Your help is greatly appreciated!!

If the WMA files are "unprotected", iTunes for Windows can convert them when you add them to your library. It should do this automatically.
See: How to add songs from your hard drive to iTunes.
Importing WMA files into iTunes for Windows.
If not, see: How to convert a song to a different format using iTunes.
iTunes: About the "Add to Library/Import/Convert functions.
However, iTunes cannot convert "protected" WMA files.
The only way to convert these files would be to burn them to an "audio" cd and import that into iTunes as you would any other cd.

  • Problems with Ipod and Windows Media Player PLEASE HELP

Ok i am not sure if this is the correct forum or not but i am having a problem. I have a Windows computer (Yes a windows computer please dont everyone yell at me) and i have a new ipod 30 gig video. Ok well when i put itunes on it changes all my music on my computer gets changed to AAC format and i cannot play music in windows media player. Ok well that is not my big issue. I make videos for church using windows movie maker and i cannot import music because nothing windows can recognize Itunes format which is AAC. well is there anyway so i can use itunes and still use WIndows Media Player and Windows Movie Maker... Any info will be greatly appreciated. THANKS ALL

I believe Quicktime Pro (which is available for Windoze) is capable of opening any WMP files and then you just export it as iPod format. That is how I get video onto the iPod. The Music and Videos all can be placed onto your iPod through iTunes.
So, if you are creating videos in your program, and want them on your iPod, then that is how you can do it.
Videos on your iPod have nothing to do with the formatting of your music. But, as the earlier post stated, change your prefs in iTunes to import as MP3. But, your videos HAVE to be in MP4 or M4V format to work on the iPod.
    Good luck... and I'm a j3susfreak too

  • Converting a FCP sequence to Windows Media File - please help!

Hi fellow mac users, please help if you can would mean the world to me! I'm trying to export an edited sequence (32mins in length) from FCP 5 using Quicktime conversion to a Windows Media File. Although I'm able to launch the process successfully, it just seems to convert the very first minute or two and not the entire thing! I'm not well versed in these technical issues, so have no clue how to figure this out. I've even tried in vain to compress the sequence first, import into FCP and then try to export as WM but no luck. My boss is away and client is pushing and I'm stressing!
So if you can help, that would be fantastic!
    many thanks in advance.

Cleaner and Sorenson are huge and complex transcoders. You just need time and a credit card to download and then lots of time to experiment and figure out the quirks of each application. You do not have this time. Telestream offers a competitor called Episode. it's cool.
Get the full version of telestream's flip4Mac (if it was installed properly you can do this with a click on the system prerf panel for flip4mac). You will need a credit card. Be prepared for a very long transcode to WMP, even on a big Macintosh. I don't think you have the time for any of this nonsense.

  • Windows Media Center - iTunes

So my library is in beautiful working order in iTunes. I've got an Xbox 360 though and wanted to play mp3's, show pictures, and videos, etc, so I linked it up via Windows Media Center. My mp3's still play fine Microsoft based products, but will no longer play in iTunes. NO they have not been converted to another file format. They are still mp3 files, and I've manually opened them via Windows Explorer in both players and it only works in Windows media player.
I don't get any error messages in iTunes, you just hit play and it doesn't do anything.
Luckily I backed up all my files and when I restored them they play fine again in iTunes, so Windows Media Center is doing something to them.

Not to my knowledge. Media Center's music functions are essentially a wrapper around Windows Media Player - whatever you can play through WMP and add to its library is accessible through the Media Center UI. Unfortunately this does not include your AAC and M4P files. There are some freeware and commercial decoders out there that will enable AAC playback through WMP (www.rarewares.org/aac.html, www.3ivx.com), but for any protected files you're out of luck.
As for front-ending iTunes through Media Center, the HP interface you refer to is the only one I know of and frankly it's not very good. You might try The Green Button forums, a quick search turned up at least one likely thread.

  • Import music from windows media to itunes

How on earth do i put my music from windows media center into itunes? I've tried everything I can think of but no luck. I just got a new nano and want to load it but... not technologically inclined!

File -> Add folder to library and select the top level folder where your music is located, most likely \Music\.

  • Need Windows Media Player 9 Help!

    Hi, all!
I've been trying to install Windows Media Player 9 on my G5 ALS iMac, with no success. I've downloaded both the .bin and .hqx versions, but one comes out as an Excel document for some reason, and the other can't be read because my computer can't find the file that created it or an application to open it with. They're coming out as documents, not zip files.
I've tried to download Flip4Mac, but on every page I've visited, after I click 'download' I get a 'Page Not Found' notice. I also tried to get VLC, but that just downloaded as a bunch of gibberish, not a file.
So, any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!
    Sue

    Hi Sue,
You need the utility Stuffit to uncompress some files. Here's a reliable download site. Hope this helps.

  • How to convert from windows media into iTunes without creating two albums with one featured song by itself?

I found out how to convert my windows media player music into my iTunes since I just joined the apple world. I was able to do one CD but I tried to convert Alicia Keys Element of Freedom and all of the songs converted except "Put It In a Love Song" featuring Beyonce. If it's going to do that, how do I keep it from doing all of my albums that have featured artists so it'll be in one album. I don't want the album and then the sole song sitting there. I've tried to find out if anyone's addressed that, but I'm not sure if people are addressing it because it's coming from Windows Media and not the store yet.

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.
