Windows migration assistant never gets inventory completed - what to try to disable?

I recently downloaded Mountain Lion, and want to move my key content from my Vista-based 64-bit windows laptop to the Macbook Pro. the initial migration attempt during Mountain Lion install failed - same exact symptom.
Both laptops connect via my home wi-fi, and establish security code, but the inventory never appears.
On the windows vista machine the green scroll bar just slides and slides (after 4 hours I aborted it).
On the Mackbook Pro, the windmill spins and spins while the machine says that the Migration Utility is collecting the inventory from my other machine.
I have insured that McAfee is disabled, as well as windows updater, and end processes directly from the Task Manager that were not required.
How do I get over this hump?
Thanks.

Is your MBP new? If so take it and your old PC to the Apple store and they will do it for you.

  • Need help with Windows Migration Assistant, as a window pops up and I don't know what to do?

Hiya, so I just purchased a macbook pro and I want to transfer files using Windows Migration assistant.
However whenever I go to do it, the mac connects to the computer and the computer always stays on 'trying to connect to mac'
and sometimes this windows pops up where it says:
    'Email
There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program, or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.'
I'm confused as I have an email program on the pc ( Windows Live Mail)
However I don't know what it means to create an 'association' and I have gone into default programs control panel to try find this associations and have however I don't know how to make this association as I've searched for the program Windows Migration Assistant, however it isn't there and I'm not sure what to do.

  • Windows migration assistant created 2 accounts on my Mac

Windows migration assistant created 2 accounts on my daughters new Mac,
In a hurry to set up my daughters New Macbook Air we downloaded the Windows Migration Assistant when migrating we unticked music and videos intending to migrate them at a later date and migrated everything else.
Then today a week later we decided to migrate the music and videos across and was amazed to see the software had created a new separate account on the mac.
So my daughter has one account with all her coursework and other info then a separate account with all her music and iTunes etc.
There was nothing in the process that suggested or warned it was a one time tool per account and why the code writers would assume a new account was needed each time the tool is used seems a rigid approach.
Does anybody know if there's a way to get the music and videos over to the first account and then delete the unneeded second account?

While it surprised me what to migration did with transferring the old files, it really out smarted me - to no real surprise.
It might have been nice to have known what to expect. Now that this is done, how can I keep some files separate on the two different accounts.
I want access to some files on one account but not on the other. Shared files, maybe?
How can that be set up?
    Thanks.

  • Lion Boot Camp Windows Migration Assistant Recovery

"Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk (volume name)" appears during installation"
The disk has a non-standard Boot Camp partition setup, where further partitioning was performed after running Boot Camp Assistant, or the configuration that Boot Camp Assistant created was manually modified
Recovery HD is not needed to install and run OS X Lion
You won't have the on-disk utilities for disk repair
If you use Boot Camp, you can run Boot Camp Assistant after installing OS X Lion to create a new Boot Camp partition, then restore the data from the backup you made of your previous Boot Camp partition.
You can also use the OS X Lion installer from the Mac App Store to create an external bootable drive, complete with a Recovery HD partition. See this article for more details. (404 on lnk).  Create Lion Recovery Drive

OS X Lion: About Windows Migration Assistant
    Last Modified: July 20, 2011
    Article: HT4796
    Summary
With OS X Lion, you can migrate all of the information from your old Windows PC to your new Mac. Lion automatically transfers your contacts, calendars, and email accounts and puts them in the appropriate applications.
To migrate information from a PC to your Mac
Download to the Windows PC the Windows Migration Assistant installer from here. (broken link)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796
    About Lion Recovery
What to do if the installer warns that no Recovery HD can be created
Some disk partition configurations may result in the OS X Lion installer reporting that it could not create a Recovery HD. In these situations, even if you are permitted to continue the install, you should quit the install and create an external, bootable OS X Lion hard drive with a Recovery HD, first. You will be able to return to the upgrade to OS X Lion on your computer's boot drive after creating the external Recovery HD.
Your storage device must have at least 13 GB available (after formatting) to install Lion and an Internet Restore partition.
Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up.
After the Recovery HD is finished starting up, you should see a desktop with a Mac OS X menu bar and a "Mac OS X Utilities" application window.

  • Windows Migration Assistant very slow via ethernet cable but after 36 hours .......

I am using Windows Migration Assistant to migrate from my 3 year old HP laptop running Windows 8 to a brand new iMac using an ethernet cable..
The pairing went well but, after 36 hours the laptop tells me there are 13 hors to go and iMac says 8 hours +. What am I doing wrong?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Wi-Fi and Ethernet are very slow ways and I don't recommend to use them unless you have to transfer small sizes. If they are big, don't use it.
What you can do is to make a Time Machine backup on your old hard drive, so get an external drive to do it. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
After making the backup, connect the external drive to your new iMac and use Migration Assistant to restore your files. If you haven't set up your iMac yet, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore the backup.
You have to restart both iMacs before doing this, so migration will be stopped

  • Only minimal email transferred via Windows Migration Assistant.

I just completed Windows Migration Assistant.  The only email transferred (from Outlook and Win XP) was the Inbox and Trash (not Sent, not all my subfolders).  Is this what's supposed to happen or was there a glitch?  Documents transferred fine.  Thanks!

    Hey alistairmck,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to know about Windows migration assistant requirements. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
Switch Basics: Migrate your Windows files to your Mac
On your PC, Download Windows Migration Assistant , then open it.
Make sure both computers are turned on and connected to your wired or wireless network. If needed, you can use a single ethernet cable to create a simple network between the two computers.
    Click Continue on the PC.
On your Mac, open Migration Assistant by clicking Launchpad in the Dock, and typing Migration Assistant in the search field.
When you're asked how you want to transfer your information, choose  "From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk".
    Click Continue on your Mac.
When prompted, enter your name and password.
Click Continue to quit other applications. Other applications can't be open on your Mac during the transfer.
Select "From another Mac or PC".
    Click Continue.
Once your PC appears in the Migration Assistant window of your Mac, click Continue.
On your PC you should see the passcode that was displayed on the Mac. Click Continue.
On your Mac, select the information you want to transfer to your Mac, then click Continue.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • Can't run Windows Migration assistant on Vista

I downloaded Windows Migration Assistant to my computer, it has Windows Vista sp2 and when I click the file with the ".exe" termination, a mesage appears telling me that there's an error and something about a paralel configuration. I really wish you can help me because I want to move all my files to my new Mac ASAP.
    Thanks!

    Which files are which???
That should be fairly apparent. Word, Excel, image and music files all have there own and different extensions. Not only that the owner of the computer should know where all those files are located on there older computer.
With most Windows version by default all those files get stored in the My Documents or in the Documents folder on later version of of Windows, Vista and Win 7. Although on 7 and Vista there are separate folders for Music, Pictures and Downloads.
That is if they have not placed them someplace else. Which for me I varely rarely use the default, OS selected, place to store my personal files, music and images and even if I do I move the My Documents and Documents folder to a different drive then where the OS is installed. I even do that on Mac. There is nothing in the OS X Documents folder or the Pictures or Music folder under Users on my Mac.
The default location for all files is C:\Documents & Settings\User Name\My Document that is in Windows XP.
On Win Vista or 7 it is C:\User\User Name\Documents.
Maybe I'm wrong! I forget the majority of computer users have no idea where all there files are. They just know they are on their computer, somewhere.
So I'm going to butt/bow out of this topic and suggest to the OP that he somehow get the Migration assistant working. And if he can't I would be hapy to assist in any way I can.
In that vane try downloading the Windows Migration Assistant software again as I think the first time the file got corrupted.
I think that you meant to reply to the OP rather than me, I am not trying to move any files, but thanks for the informaion.

  • How do I use Migration Assistant to get my Mail and Keychain settings from

How do I use Migration Assistant to get my Mail and Keychain settings from my Power Mac G5 2.3Ghz? I just purchased a new 2.5 MacBook Pro which will be delivered tomorrow, and I want to to know how to transfer Mail and Keychain?
Thank You in advance for your reading and replying.
    Kindest Regards,
    Sebastian

Rather than using Migration Assistant, which can cause trouble with the PPC to Intel change, simply boot the G5 in FireWire target disk mode and manually transfer the following:
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
You might want to look over Kappy's helpful guide for migrating, which covers the full process for a manual migration (including the above files).
    Hope this helps...

  • Using migration assistant I transferred my complete MacBookPro to my nex iMac. Now I find out that all jampacks are missing in GarageBand. Can anyone advise? Thanks!

Using migration assistant I transferred my complete MacBookPro to my nex iMac. Now I find out that all jampacks are missing in GarageBand. Can anyone advise? Thanks!

I would think the migration assistant transfers 100% of all contents...
When you are setting up a new Mac you can use Setup assistant the moment you boot the mac the first time. Setup Assistant will usually transfer everything. If you miss tha t moment and later launch Migration Assistant some library files will not be transferred. Migration assistant will not transfer system files, only User Files and Application files. I think, that is why your files are missing.
so could you please tell how this copying is done?
Best take an external drive with plenty of free disk space and plug it into your MacBook Pro.
Open the System drive, your Macintosh HD in the Finder and open the folder "Library", then "Application Support", then "GarageBand". Copy the folder
/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/  to your external drive by dragging it there.
Then open again the folder "Library" on your Macintosh HD, and this time open the folder "Audio" inside. Copy the folder
    /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/
to your externall drive. Eject the drive and plug it into your iMac.
Now compare the AppleLoops folders and instrument library folders and copy all missing items over to the corresponding folders in the iMac's Library.
Afterwards you need to reindex the loops, by dragging any loop you newly installed onto the Loop Browser in garageband, see: Rebuilding the Loop Index in GarageBand
